I just got bought a PB 12" Super + iPod 20GB and a bunch of stuff (and boy am I broke right now, ran me up like 2k+)

What should I do now? These things are just sitting there and I have no clue what to do next. I think I may be suffering from paralysis of the brain... Should I open? I am afraid of dead pixels...

Of course open them!

At least get your PowerBook rolling.

If you get stuck, someone will be here to help.

Nice old skool Nintendo, holmes. You obviously saved money on your game console. So treat yourself, live a little.

You can start up with your A/C adapter, but then you want to leave your PowerBook plugged in till the battery is fully charged.

Installing MS Office is a piece of cake so worry about that later after you've
test run your system.

You might want to move that bottle of beer, just in case ! :D

I got the HP PSC 1510, you'll love your 1610

I'm still on dialup, so someone else will be better qualified to help you
with the Airport express set-up.

Is there any particular problem you're stuck on?

Just keep them in their boxes, put them where you can always see them and stare at them for prolonged moments at any given time.

For crying out loud... if that ever gets boring then and only then can you open the boxes.

Actually, I do just the opposite. Your PowerBook comes with a charge. I let that run down completely (until the PB goes into a deep sleep). Then I plug the power adapter in and completely charge - unplug - and drain the battery(again, to a deep sleep).

That's the way I was taught to condition LiIon batteries.

Thanks for the correction.

I'm a tower freak, so forgive please.

I've opened two iBooks. The first time I sat there for one hour before opening it because I was worried that I wouldn't know what to do and mess everything up, the second time it was ten minutes because I was worried about dead pixels. I can't remember feeling like that since I got home from hospital with my first baby and looking after her on my own, and that was 28 years ago!!!

Judging by the picture (beer, NES, poster on the wall), you're a college student? If school has started it seems to me like you should unpack that stuff and it get it set up ASAP. Damn I miss college!

I actually slept on it. Didnt open it at all (prolly because I was tired from shopping at the mall all day). Ofcourse, didnt get much sleep either. I had a strange dream that I had gotten this iBook and it had a cluster of dead pixels right in the middle of the screen!! I was horrified! (love to the iBook owners)

Thanks for all the advice guys, especially FFTT. This is my first Mac ever! One of my apartment-mates owns a Rev A 15", but he doesnt know squat about computers. Cant even tell which ver of Office:mac he has!

I'll be posting pics soon!

It takes a long time for the battery to go from fully charged to nothing, and recharge again, I didn't make an exact note but am thinking in terms of 7+ hours. If you want to be around for this callibration process, and you do when it's your new baby, don't start in the evening or you'll be up all night. I find it helpful to have the percentage showing against the battery, top right click on battery, go to show and then click on percentage.
Just to add that my iBook was so easy and straight forward to set up, got online automatically, even the written instructions are clear. Nothing to worry about.

you said you were.... too.... tired to open your new Powerbook, and you waited to the next morning to open it?! haha, if I just bought a new Mac computer, I wouldnt be able to sleep if I didnt open it!

The only problem I see there, is wondering what order to open everything in, lol.

I would open the little packages first. That way you can really savour the bigger packages at the end. Used to do that during Christmas

Remember, at each step you should take time to smell the plastic. It may not be as good as new shower curtain liners, but when there's a sexy Apple product underneath, it feels just as good. :)

They are worth more in the package. Like a pack of baseball cards.

Haha.... Dood its a computer not a newborn baby. Open the stuff and start some new threads with them.

Why wait?!

When I bought my PB the other day at the college bookstore, I was stopped at a red light on the way back to my dorm and was tempted to open it up in the car and start playing with it :D

Guys, it was a long weekend. But today, after nursing my hangover, I finally got back down to earth and started on the boxes. I opened the PB first (ofcourse) and it was SWEET! No dead pixels whatsoever!

I then read the manual and hooked it up, etc. I charged it first (as per manual instruction) and then watched Reservior Dogs on it to caliberate! Man this thing is sweet! It went thru RD, then the bonus material, then some itunes (shared music) and then I was like wtf? Power down dammit!

Wont bore you with the rest of the boxes. Here are the pics (like 2% of them)

Very nice looking machine you've got there. So long as the hard drive quietens down after a second or so, I don't think there's a problem. :)

My 15" makes strange little sound upon waking as well (something like: "kadishkah" :p ), but lasts only for a second.

So you've got all that wonderful mac goodness plugged into a surge protector right? Those first pics looked like the mac was plugged directly into the wall and I was like:

Ahhh...if only I could go back in time bud, loved opening my first mac which happen to be a 15"powerbook, but honestly love using it more. I say savor it and your apple products well. I think part of the buying experience is how cool apple packaging is.

But lets face it they are depreciating assets, so use em! Once you fall in love with them and they are well worn in, they they become part of the family....I frigin love all my apple stuff!

Yeah you gotta take extra care with all this micro electronics stuff.

Laptop insurance might not be a bad idea and AppleCare doesn't
cover accidental damage.

My neighbor never leaves his PowerBook pugged in to the phone line when it's not attended, but last month during normal weather, his modem got zapped by a/c current in the phone lines.

He sent it out for repair and the ticket cost him $300.00.

My FX rack took a bad power surge hit last summer taking out $1600 worth of processors and mixers.

Don't let that sweet new PowerBook have unprotected sex with your wall outlets. :D

Congrats! You'll love you're new PB.

I remember fondly, that warm autumn day i got home and my PB was waiting in my room. I took soooo long to open it, going through every layer of packaging and savouring the moment. Once I had my PB out, I just started at it for about 30 mins, from every possible angle. Once I had turned it on, I don't think I went to sleep until 4am

anyway, now that my inner geek has been supressed, just have fun with it!!!

PS. I can't recommend highly enough getting some extra RAM into it - really makes it fly!

You can open them? Man, and all this time I thought I spent $1300 on a fancy box!

Lol, I can't wait until my new notebook comes. Opening up an Apple product is always a wonderful thing. I even asked my best friend to wait to open up her iPod until I came over, I really am a geek.

It's pretty wonderful experience (especially if you spend months on Macrumors agonizing over what will be IN the box :p ).

I bought a refurb 15" PB and thought I would be denied the new-mac-smell and designed-by-Apple packaging. Yet everything was packed in mint condition: from the exquistely designed box down to the sealed baggies of wire-wrapped telephone and ethernet cords. As I fondly remember this moment I realize I was struck, even then, by how oddly important all this seemed :p

Sadly, I knew that by opening the packaging I doomed my future self to judgemental headshaking and plumeting appraisal values by the experts on "Antiques Roadshow." ;)

Congratulations to all who have recently opened their new macs. Savor the moment, but do get on to the using-the-computer bit: It's even better! :D
