Got my first computer back in the beginning of the '90's. It had DOS. As soon as I saw WIN 3.1 and the graphics interface I fell in love and immediately got rid of the old PC and bought me a new one that used 3.1. Eventually when WIN 95 came along, I moved on up.... and, yeah, back then I was one of those who would simply buy a new computer rather than buy the upgraded version of WIN and stick that into my machine! ::Shakes head:: What's weird is that I wasn't afraid to take on the challenge of installing new hardware (CD drive, RAM, etc). Skipped WIN 98, came along just in time for WIN 98SE, which I used for a long time. A VERY long time.... finances didn't permit me to get a new computer when WIN ME or WIN XP became available and my machine's motherboard would not have tolerated an upgrade. Actually, I was thankful to have avoided the whole WIN ME fiasco...
Finally, about a couple of years ago I was able to buy a new computer with XP Pro, an inexpensive laptop, and then a few months later I was able to get a new desktop as well. That old WIN 98SE machine is still sitting in the other room, fully operational and one of these days I've got to finish transferring/removing files and folders from it so I can format the drive and get rid of the darned thing altogether. I certainly found WIN XP Pro to be a vast improvement over WIN 98SE! But that was before I discovered the Mac and OS X....
Anyway, yes, I suspect that those figures are based on people who, like me, held on to their WIN 98SE machine for a long time, either using it every day as the primary computer or relegating it to the status of extra computer after going with a newer computer and XP, or like me, just having the thing sitting there until I get around to cleaning it out.
