You find whenever you nedstat a site, you are presented with a series of stats, including Web browser and OS. I'm sure they also compile those stats for all sites and that's what is used as the basis for reports like this. Most use the web these days, so I think it is a fair assessment of OS usage.

Don't take any of the stats too seriously.

  • Number of computer users worldwide (Microsoft): 670,000,000 (1 billion by 2010)
  • Number of Internet users worldwide (ITU): 972,828,000 (145% of computer users)
  • Worldwide personal computer installed base (Gartner): 798,000,000 (119% of computer users)
  • Number of users per computer (IDC): 2-3, or at least 1.5 billion people.
