So I'm a retoucher at portrait studio. We have 4 brand new iMacs and half a dozen PCs, all connected to a NAS (a 9TB Thecus RAID system) via gigabit Ethernet. On that NAS we store terabytes of images that we edit, retouch, rename, modify, move, copy, read, write, delete, etc
constantly.
Now first of all, all of this is bloody slow since Gigabit Ethernet is slow to begin with. But when someone says "oh can you find that folder called XYZ on the NAS" there is absolutely no freaking way to do it. Spotlight will not search the Thecus, no matter what. If you type in a search term, it just searches and searches to no avail forever. It takes ages on Windows too, but at least Windows will eventually come up with some results at some point.
Here's my question: why can't the NAS be indexed, and how can this be done if possible? How can a NAS become instant-searchable just like an internal hard drive? Why is using professional grade systems at work 100 times slower than using any crappy computer at home?
