View Full Version : "Invisible" white text
thequicksilver
Dec 27, 2005, 09:33 AM
A few members have recently started to use white text in their messages, as an extra "hidden" comment additional to their main "visible" post.
I have nothing against the members involved, but do find this a little tiresome. If something's worth reading, put it in a visible colour, if it's not worth reading, don't write it. :)
It does get annoying, as the users who do this are some of the most active, and if I'm reading a thread it's preferable not to have to highlight all the random areas of plain white on a page to make sure I'm not "missing out" on anything. It also does make the place seem very cliquey, with only regular members knowing of this trend, and newer members missing out on the banter.
Is it just me, or is it a bit of a joke that's gone too far?

If I remember correctly, white text was used as a way to hide spoilers in some of the community discussion threads. It was useful, but I'll agree, it's getting out of control.
It does make MR feel cliquey.
WHATEVER! White text rules! Wassup peeps! A joke only goes too far when people get hurt.

Certain members might be abusing it a bit - but it does serve a purpose from time to time - like Lacero mentioned in the posting of spoilers.
So unless it becomes a huge abuse, I don't think it will go away - and the members who are playing with it now will eventually tire of the game.

I, for one, find it fun. It's not like you're missing out on anything really important. It's like an easter egg, or something, that you can only enjoy by doing something 'extra'.
Haha, made you look!

Proper white texting means you need to use #fafafa instead of "white". In the event you feel you may be quoted, and wish to be as stealth as possible, I suggest using #f5f5f5, as that will reduce the chances you'll get outed. Good luck and happy white texting!

I was waiting for someone to mention this... but it doesn't bother me at all.
Occasionally, I do an 'Apple+A' to select the whole page to see what else may be there but surely it's not that important?
And no, I don't tend to use it myself... laziness, really.

Hmmm, I'm sorry it bothers you. :(
But if I follow you correctly...what you're saying is that it contributes to this place having a culture that people have to get into and be a part of, and that's why you don't like it? The fact that MR has a culture is the only reason I still post here or post here frequently... so that part is hard for me to apologize for. It's not exclusive.
It's not like you have to apply for a permit to do wacky stuff here. Just see it and join in the fun. And the people who do it are not only active posters of garbage...they help people out a *lot* too.... If you try to help people out here, you'll be part of the family whether or not you do stupid white text stuff or change your avatar constantly. I hardly ever change my avatar and people still like me.
Well, okay, I don't change my avatar and people continue to dislike me at the same levels they always have.

Well, if white was the new black, then wouldn't pink be the new white? :p
Can you see the text in Lacero's post #7 ?Only if you highlight the post/page. That's the beauty of the Whatever coding. The format of the color= tag is:
[color=#{R value in hex}{G value in hex}{B value in hex}]
FA is hex for 250, which is the RGB value of the posting area, hence making the text the same color as the background. "White" text is R=G=B=255, rending it more like "ghost" text that you can just see.

No, you don't quite catch my drift. The wacky/silly comments are great. Just post them in black. What's the point in masking them? All it's doing is excluding others who don't want to/doesn't realise white comments are there.
What's the difference between your comment :
Well, okay, I don't change my avatar and people continue to dislike me at the same levels they always have.
and:
Well, okay, I don't change my avatar and people continue to dislike me at the same levels they always have.
Answer: you've made it hard to read. Why bother? Just type it normally.
(And if you have to make it different to separate "fun" comments from "serious" ones, why not make them green, or slightly smaller, or in a different font, or italicised, etc? Making them white just adds a hoop for the reader to jump through. Not much of one, I admit, but I prefer to read black on white, not white on light blue, whose contrast isn't optimal…)

I like the white. I like the extra hoop.
I think it's fun !:)
I do see a difference between a hidden message in white and a high contrast message in black. Similiar to body language, it si the way it is delivered not the content of what is delivered. White text has a meaning on it's own - different for everybody on the forum.

Hmmmm, I'm sorry this bothers you so much. I'm not going to try to justify it. We just have ad hoc fun. As far as I know, no one sits down and writes out rules for the fun here before it starts. And most of the games get old fairly quickly anyway. That's just kind of the way the place is. And for all the complaints about MR being unwelcoming to new posters, tons of new people get help here every day, and our ranks don't seem to be shrinking. As I said before, I personally think you'll be happier here if you concentrate on how you can participate and spend less time worrying about what's awfully wrong with the place. But maybe you cannot. You've mangled my words again, I'm afraid. :)
I'm not unhappy with MR, nor worrying about it, it's a great forum and I love it, but I think this is a tad silly. Compared to the issues at most other fora I've been part of this is small, but it's niggled at me for a while. What I wanted to do was actually have a rational discussion about it so that I could get my head around it a little better, and that those who use it quite often can realise that, you know, it can get a teensy little bit annoying when used to extremes. :) And I don't think that it's unwelcoming, but I think it's just a bit rude, even though 99.99% of new users won't even see the masked white text. It's like being at a table eating dinner with six people who all speak English, but only speaking to the one other person who speaks French, in French. What if I started posting all my messages in French, claiming that it's just a fad? I think you'll see my point of view when I put it that way. :)
I recognise though that this is a genuine fad, but as nobody else has posted a thread in the Feedback section about it, I did. Simple as that. I don't like it, I think it's silly, but c'est la vie. I'll survive. :)

Such as "decade", "facade", "deface", or "faded".
Or "fad".
I seems that it will work with less than 6 characters as long as they are appropriate hexadecimal numbers.

I'll come down on thequicksilver's side. I find it a PITA to have to read with Command A selected or to have to look at a post and decide whether the empty rows are empty or have white text in them. At least if there's a smiley floating in midair, you have some idea of whether it's worth checking.
The jokes and asides can be funny but I suspect that they often are missed by those they're aimed at unless that person actually replies and quotes - thus spotting those lines.

Ah yes, I love that question. For fun, I always argue that the tree doesn't actually make a sound, rather its crashing creates vibrations in the air molecules which would require a human ear present in order to translate those vibrations into actual sound. Yes I know that's still not quite right but I don't care, I like to argue about things.
Likewise, if text was written in a post and nobody could read it, was it actually written? Philosophical questions like these have dumbfounded men for ages and will continue to do so for eternity.

How's that for the ultimate in stealth and annoyance.
I think writing in french which everyone can see, and writing in white where no one can see, unless they wanted to, are completely different things.

After all, to not understand is the same as to not see, no?
Ah, more philosophical discussion, I love it! Yes, you are correct, many people are "looking" at things in this world however they are truly not "seeing" reality and do not "understand". Many people look without seeing, yes, that's a good way of putting it.
Cos that's what you're saying. And it's not true.
But it is true, you've just said so yourself above! And you were right the first time, no need to contradict yourself. :p ;) :D
The whispering at the dinner table is the best metaphor there is for it. It's rude.
Ah yes, more philosophy, I love this stuff! I see what you're saying - "whispering" is what is going on aside from the main "conversation", i.e. the white text, and many people do not understand it. And when people do not understand things or truly know what is going on, they become defensive, challenged, and the like - hence why they would incorrectly perceive what they do not understand as being "rude" as you put it, when in fact it is simply because they do not understand the true nature of what is going on. Something is happening contrary to the norm (white text versus plain text) and therefore must be "rude" when in fact it is more a matter of ignorance to the truth.
Fascinating thoughts, I appreciate this in depth discussion.
Sometimes, it's just too easy...

Yes, I noticed that as well. Well, you can use icons like this  however they are not "invisible" like the text and probably look somewhat out of place - or if nothing else, a dead giveaway that you are using white text, which really defeats the purpose...
Good minds think alike. Big Smile!
You explained exactly what I was trying to with my shorthand.
It looks weird with an icon in the middle of the page with no text.
Anyhow, this steath mode is a pain in the butt to use.

How? Both are deliberately masking something to people without a certain knowledge - one of a foreign language, and one of knowing that there's white text.

BTW: I thought this thread got locked?
Hmmm, so did I (edesignuk locked it i believe). Someone must have reopened it, which is a good thing, because I was enjoying it! :)
Anyhow, I usually enjoy checking for hidden text and and on most occasions finding some kind of humorous/witty addition. I don't find it rude at all and as others have said it adds to the fun of this great forum.
PS I don't think there's ever been a thread with so much invisible text. Ah, the irony....

We should ban PM'ing, too - I read that somebody PM'd somebody else and I feel left out.

it is easier to read once you select all, though.. white on light blue v. black on brown.

I totally agree. MR might end up liable for the psychiatric bills otherwise.

I apologise, it's 4am and I'm not at my sharpest.
How embarrassing. You could have pointed that out to me in invisible text katie ta achoo and saved me the embarrassment!

(edesignuk locked it i believe).I did, but reopened it due to a polite request. I closed it because there's no way white text will be banned, so this is really going no where.
This will probably be closed again soon, as, shockingly, it isn't going anywhere.

I read MR a lot, and I never knew about this white texting. VERY COOL! Only now I'm going to have to go back and reread all the old threads to see what I've missed. I'd almost rather not have found out. This is going to take months....

As is posting threads in regards to sharing pictures pretty women on their desktops. I am not against that but I am sure some on here object to it as you do white text.
There are one or two things in this community that annoy me, but it is a community, it is going to happen wether it is perceived as rude by myself or not.

Equivocation.
PMing is not only foregrounded in the CP, but is a private conversation between two members.
White Texting is a public way to carry on a conversation that foregrounds the ignorance of other members.
It's ridiculous to get rid of white text and not entirely civil to use it.

I find it absolutely hilarious how seriously some people are taking this whole "white text" thing. It's a freakin' Internet Forum! How do some of these people function in the real world if they get hung up on the "ethics" of using white text in an Internet discusison group? :p :D
Nice try, nothing here.
