Like these? (http://sitforless.com/kneeling_chairs/index.php)
I haven't sat in one since I was 13 but I have this fond memory of how comfortable it was and I'm thinking about buying one. Do you use it as a computer chair? How many hours a day?
Thanks.

i have one, I use it as my computer chair. It depends on like how much i need it cuz it also functions as my school-desk chair, but i'd say per day i average about 3 hours in it? Sometimes my legs get tired in it and i'll flip the chair around so like im sitting normally with the kneeling part behind me (coincidentally im doing that now). Great for your back if they're adjusted right, okay for style, meh for comfort.
It was cheaper than a $100 plastic computer chair though, i only payed like $45 :)

I would think that this type of chair would be horrible for ones back since there is no back support. Maybe I will go to staples and try one out :)

When the middle school first bought kneeling chairs for the school library, no one knew how to sit on them. Including me. I perched backwards on the end of the buttock-area, got excited by something, and WHAM! That laser printer never knew what hit it.

Nope, don't have one, but I always kneel on my computer chair hanging over the backside of it, with my butt up in the air. It's pretty comfortable. I alternate whenevermy butt or knees get tired.

Brings back memories. My best friend's father had one. At first I had no idea how to use it. I would use one for a few hours at a time but not much more than that. Of course I don't follow those "How to sit proper at a computer desk" guides on posture and such.
This thread reminds me I should contact my friend sometime. It's been a while you know.

i got mine a few months ago at Office Max, but i can't find a link on their site, or any kneeling chairs for that matter. If i find it or the equivilent i'll post it for you :)
EDIT: found it after some digging (http://www.officemax.com/max/solutions/product/prodBlock.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&expansionOID=-536880778&prodBlockOID=537044822), i got mine in black though.

I had one when younger, and I hated it then... too rough on the knees.
After I had knee surgeries and later my wife had one of those... tried it again, and holy jebus the pain. I made her give it away... will never "sit" in one of those abominations again.

That's really crazy, my best friend's father had one too, he is actually the only person I've ever known to have one and the one I mention on the first post.

We had one at work a couple of years ago, until the wheels fell off. I had a go myself – it was actually quite comfortable, and is supposed to be good for the back and your posture.

Wheeeeeeeeeeeee! :p

I used one for a few years. It was good because it forces you not to slouch, so its good for your back and posture. I finally got rid of it because the cushioning on the knees kind of wore out and wasn't providing the needed softness anymore. That caused my shins to start to hurt. So I went to a regular chair I had laying around after that. So I think they are good, but padding is important.

they shouldnt hurt your knees. if theyre adjusted right, youre supposed to have almost all your weight on your butt, with just a little on your knees; just enough to make you want to sit up straight.

I'm not sure why I disliked them initially... maybe had something to do with not feeling "free" anymore, you know, to swing your legs and such... stretch out, etc. Anyways, those chairs became pointless to use for me after my knee surgeries.

Thanks for all the replies, I'm just gonna have to go down to Staples and sit in one for 4 hours. You think they'd mind? ;)
If it sucks I guess I'll start saving for an Aeron.

If it sucks I guess I'll start saving for an Aeron. :eek:Speaking of... I saw one in Costco a few weeks ago! I had to try it out (read so much about them from iGary awhile back)... I mean, maybe it's because I didn't spend 4+ hours in it, but it didn't seem like $799 comfortable. :o It's very comfy, but I don't know if it's $799 comfy. :p

My Mom has one and swears by them and she is sitting about 7 hours a day when she's in the office.

I like using an exercise ball as a chair when setting in front of my desk at home. It is great for balance and middle strength, which in turn helps my achy ol' back.
Mine looks something like this:

I have taken a chair from my dinning room and have been using it at the computer with it leaning forward on two legs. I must admit my back feels great. Granted, I don't know how I would feel sitting like this for hours. Especially since I like to sit with my legs crossed a lot. :P

I have tried one of these in the store and they are great, not easy to sit in but good for back and you dont get sore butt and legs.

the best analysis I've seen of chairs and seated posture is a book called The Chair: Rethinking Culture, Body, and Design by Galen Cranz:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=br_ss_hs/104-4832743-0742322?search-alias=aps&keywords=the%20chair
Yeah, there's no back support in a kneeling chair, because you don't need it. Look around some time. When people lean back in a chair, using the "back support" they're not using "good posture":
Their back is slumped in a C curve. Their cervical spine (their neck) is ratcheted forward, causing way more muscular tonus in the back of the neck than is necessary, depressing the sternum and limiting mobility in the upper ribs. And their lumbar vertabrae are rounded instead of arched. Just 'cause a back support is shaped like an "ideal lower spine shape" doesn't mean it supports the back in this way.
The trick of a kneeling chair is that it maintains an oblique angle between the thighs and the torso. This allows the lower back to arch the "natural way" (lordosis). (Saddle chairs acheive roughly the same thing, but without the strain on the knees).
By contrast, traditional chairs, which more or less maintain a 90 degree angle betweent the thighs and torso, prevent the lower back from arching. Sticking a curved back support onto the chair doesn't change this. (See picture below)
Lower back pain is epidemic in industrialized societies, but not in cultures where kneeling and squatting are commonplace.
BTW, there are some interesting product from this site:
http://www.officeorganix.com
or find a good practitioner of the Feldenkrais Method or the Alexander Technique.
