What Brand of Digital Camera for Mac

Yup, another thread that asks MR members on what digital camera for Mac..

Ideally under $500.00 US that's point/shoot ease/maybe movie mode too but i want surely want a high optical zoom not digital .. 😱


currently i got a Toshiba pdr-m61 2.3 MP and has 3x real optical zoom from like 2000 .. but its bulky to carry/hold for shooting .. 🙁

i'd like a High MP camera say 5.0MP +

The camera will be used in landscape pics and portait(sp?) pics.. so please give me some reviews or leads of good cameras for Mac .. I already know of the apple list of cameras that are compatible with Mac OS X 😱


If the brand that you say to get and i'll see if my work has it .. it'll be cheaper 😉 😱
 
Get the PANASONIC LX-1. Perfect camera and I'm already jealous. Even shoots widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio!

Another good choice is a Nikon Coolpix. I really love the 3500 if it weren't for the crappy battery life.

Canon cameras are in the running but i want other ppls ideas of other cameras too .. I know canon cameras do with mac but i'm open with other brands too 😱 😱
 
I've got a Nikon D50 which I would recommend, but if its not for semi-pro photography and your looking for something 'less bulky' then I would suggest anything from the Canon Ixus range, superb build and picture quality.
 
Pricegrabber the DSC-T9. It's an amazing camera. Have had it for about 2 months now and can't get enough of the quality and the great screen. The ultra-compact body makes it the sexier, especially if you have a chrome-ish computer (say powermacs or mbp)
 
Kodak Easyshare CX7525 🙂. It's autofocus isn't so great, but it's a simple camera. (What I mean by that is that you can't get very close to the object -- ~5 inches away-- but when it does focus, it does a good job.)

Buy it without the dock if you can - it's useless and it isn't good. You'll save a hundred dollars or so 🙂.
 
i like my casio ex-z750. for me, the dock is a great option (charges/transfers) but i know some people would disagree. i saw it advertised for $300 at costco the other day and some of its main selling points are a very attractive movie mode, outstanding battery life, and 7.2 MP all in a sleek package.

look into it...
 
Get one of the Panasonic or Olympus big zoom cameras. I'm talking about the 10 to 12x optical zoom ones. They don't cost heaps, and they take great photos. They're pretty much aiming at consumers who want a digital SLR in terms of quality, but without the interchangable lense to deal with. It's better than those ultraslim point and shoot cameras. Don't bother with them. Do you think there is NO drawback of an ultraslim as opposed to a bulkier camera? The bulkier cameras are around for a reason.

I have a Canon p&s and a Nikon dSLR, but I'd still not recommend either of them if what you want is a decent zoom. Oh, Canon PowerShots are pretty cool, though...... 5x optical zoom, I think.

I'd recommend the Sony DSC(?) R1 big zoom point and shoot, but the R1 costs more than several DSLRs.

I have a Canon A95 and it is a great camera!! If i remember correctly that and the A series have been upgrade so you might want to look for the newer version. the thing that i really like about mine is that is a smaller camera with most of the functionality of a full sized camera. It can even take other lenses. And they make LOTS of other things for the camera.

The best place i have found for reviews is here. Just choose what kinda things you want and then read the reviews you can find. If you cant find a review there just do a google search for "digital camera reviews"

Another vote for Casio EX-Z750. Although I'd prefer not having a dock, MPEG4 movie mode is great. Videos occupy significantly less space than MJPEG or MPEG1 cameras. It is possible to actually use the movie mode without filling up your card after a few minutes. You can also download their video codec for intel Macs. Take that flip4mac. 🙂 It's got a large (2.5'') LCD screen, much bigger than what I was used to. Very easy to use if you like fiddling with settings. Picture quality is really good for me. It has only 3x optical zoom.

If you want more optical zoom and do not care about the movie mode, Panasonic DMC-LZ2 has 6x optical zoom. It is cheaper, but comes with only 2in'' LCD screen.
 
Panasonic ... I love my Panasonic camera (FX-9 P&S with optical stablization) however one thing that can annoy you is the level of noise in the pictures. Yes there are noise reduction software, which I apply to my favorite pictures, but it is noticeable. Take a look a sample pictures on reviews sites, see what you think.

Otherwise, the LX-1 camera that shoots 16:9 is amazing with it's perspective. I love panoramic images. I'm seriously considering upgrading to that camera once the sensor is improved for the next iteration.

I can't tell you a specific model, but I'd have to highly recommend Canon.

I would not sacrifice quality to have a gimicky "tiny" Sony camera or the like. I've done lots of research over the past few years and have bought both my parents and girlfriend Canons. The Powershot serious (A510, etc) are very good, but the S2 IS is amazing!

12x optical zoom as well. I currently am semi-pro (serious hobby, many paying shoots) and use a Canon DSLR and love it.

Go big 😀 and collect pop cans and whatnot to return for the nickel for your memory cards 😉 😛
 
My mother-in-law got the Canon A620 for Christmas and it is a sweet camera. It takes great pictures and has a very good movie mode (the movie mode is not super limited in size and length like my Nikon Coolpix 5700 is). How good are the pics? Well, I would say close to my Nikon Coolpix 5700. But my Nikon might be a bit better for outdoor still shots. The Canon is probably better for most other things. Both are great as far as image quality goes. Both struggle in low light situations (particularly the auto-focus of the Nikon).

I've done a little more research myself. I'd go with the Powershot S2 IS - great zoom on it!

because the powershot series is down to S2 IS and A620 and the LX-1 from Panasonic

the camera i'll use @least 4 years .. i wanna try to scretch every penny out of my buy 😱 😱

I'm in exactly the same boat, and struggling with similar choices. Here's a post of a similar struggle at Digital Photo Review. Unfortunately, no clear directions were offered (except maybe wait for the S3 IS...), but there was a very cool link that offers comparisons on photo quality here.

Have you gone to a store to try out these cameras? That's my next step. The A620 and S2 IS are so different in terms of size, controls, overall feel that I wouldn't just order one without playing with them "in person." You might find your decision becomes much easier than (it was with my powerbook).
