View Full Version : Your most hated font....excluding Comic Sans

Well aside from everyones well document hatred of Comic Sans (http://www.bancomicsans.com) I'm wondering what other over used font you see in the every day world that you hate.

For me, it's gotta be Papyrus, I dunno what it is but this turns up on more and more menus & restaurant signs then I care to remember.

That's funny. My parents and I were driving downtown and made a game out of guessing what fonts were used on the signs we'd see. I DO see Papyrus a lot. I think one was called "fontdinerdotcom" (not sure) and it's pretty annoying because a lot of girly boutiques are using it now.

In my city they recently built a bus station. It's a really nice development because the suburb is affluent. A few restaurants, brand new condominiums. All of it's perfect except they chose Papyrus for all the banners. Ugh!

Also hate Arial, the Microsoft ripoff of Helvetica (which is the lovely, Swiss font that comes with all Macs).

I am not sure that I hate the Comic Sans font; but I understand where you are coming from maybe. Each decade or period had its fonts that defined that period in history in regards to advertising.

The problem is that much of our advertising today is done by "non-professionals" - and yes, I am one of those - that had an eye for the client they worked for. But perhaps no formal training in graphic arts.

At least I knew not to mix serif and non-serif fonts. And that fonts should be close to each other in a "family" way. I left advertising for the company I work for about a year ago.

When I was "in charge" I tried for a unified "corporate" look. Now each store is up to those that might know how to use PS or Publisher. That leads to people that never saw a font or a font effect that they never disliked.

Just because you have shadow effects for fonts, it does not mean they should be used. Nor does it mean that since you have 256+ colors to choose from; that each and every color needs to be used in a sign or poster. :)

Sorry for the rant; but it pains me after my hard 3 years work on a corporate communications policy when I did the advertising for my company, that we sometimes have signage that looks like a 2nd grade computer science project.

And don't get me started on the ad layout themes that I created; after much trial and error! Only to to have some under paid grunt at the newspaper churning out some quickie solution.

This is not a sour grapes post, at least as I see it. I should try an post some images of what I did verse what the grunts at the newspaper are doing. My company did a cost-benefit analysis, and I came up being the loser. At least they saw that I had benefits elsewhere in the company.:)

haha as an in house graphics person who does 90% of our companies output I feel your pain! Half my problem with papyrus is my co-workers tendency to use it, thank god she doesn't do any graphics for us anymore.

I agree in most cases, but I love courier in terminals/coding and showing code examples in write-ups.

I'm not much of a font fanatic, so I really can't pick one (other than the main excluded one lol) so I'll cast a null vote :)

I think that Times Roman gets a free ride because at least it has an interesting history (http://groups.google.com/group/comp.fonts/msg/778f715be1eca0b0). Boring fonts do have a legitimate place in the world, when they're not supposed to call attention to themselves.

Gill Sans - because it creates a lot of kerning issues

True... some of those caps are oddly tight. The A, W and T particularly.

It used to be one of our corporate fonts and I was always asked to double-space  a sentence beginning with a W by an internal client. So we eventually had to spend some time setting up new kerning tables in Quark to deal with the problem.

3. Hobo - it turns my stomach

Ick. There's a whole bunch of 70's Letraset ones that would have been better left in rub-down format rather than being digitised.

totally agree. usually people forget about letter spacing/kerning, leading, font weights and other typesetting "rules" which can end up ruining a great font like helvetica. my vote is for all the 90's grunge fonts---if you need the relic'd effect, create it yourself and make it halfway decent. eras would also be on my list. i don't like to use capitals...

Okay. You should really take another look at Helvetica. It's a fantastic typeface when used correctly. Most people don't bother to kern it and only use the default weights and sizes. And almost 50 years after it's original drawing, it still feels modern.

There's even an entire beautifully-designed book dedicated to the uses of Helvetica; http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/3907044878/sr=8-1/qid=1144679202/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-2330190-4079954?%5Fencoding=UTF8

Those are relatively useful in the print design world. They come up more than you'd imagine...watch out for them in books/magazines/posters whatever, and you'll notice that decorative shapes show up a lot. They're also used huge a lot and as background type stuff. The reason they make a font of it is so that you can have tons of different shapes on hand at any time, and they're vectorized so you can make them huge.

The problem isn't the fonts, it's the designers. At the print shop I work at Helvetica and Times are so overused, I beg people to use anything else. This place has been doing type in USA for over 25 years and it shows. Cooper Black is a big font where I work. Ditto on BrushScript. On the other-hand Papyrus rarely shows it's head. This is more of a Windows beef than a Mac one, but I dislike Times New Roman, and there seems to be no way to get rid of it. I've even tried deleting the TTF file. MS Word seems to default to it everywhere and there's no way to change that.

Helvetica's pretty nice, but a little narrow. Century Gothic is my current favorite. For monospace fonts my all-time favorite is one called OCR-B, but nobody seems to have ever heard of it!

Not ALL designers! I used to be one. Just the designers without enough creativity or taste to use fonts appropriate for the intended design.
There are two points to consider:
1. Anyone with a computer is under the impression they are a "designer." They don't understand that buying a knife does not make you a surgeon.
2. Many Print Shops don't want designers. They want someone who can typeset 15 business cards, 10 envelopes, 5 letterheads, 3 auction bills, and some light layout in one afternoon. In other words, a typesetter. They don't always get that, but that's what they want.
With these two situations you get people who either overuse fonts because it's the first one on the font menu, it's what is the default, it's what's on the template, it's what "we've always used.", or "I just like that font."
I have dealt with many designers over the last 10 years, and I do appreciate the skills a fine designer can bring to the table. I should also say that design does not equal printability. Too many designs look beautiful, but are economically unsound, unworkable, or just not created properly.

Well aside from everyones well document hatred of Comic Sans (http://www.bancomicsans.com) I'm wondering what other over used font you see in the every day world that you hate.

For me, it's gotta be Papyrus, I dunno what it is but this turns up on more and more menus & restaurant signs then I care to remember.

http://image3.myfonts.com/waterfall/e2/e20f21c39d94e4e4a831f04e5c01da6d.png

Impact. Most overused. Most ugly and the postscript version doesnt match the truetype version... THANK YOU Microsoft! These two versions you're seeing are SUPPOSED to be the same size!

Arial, Helvetica, Univers, Times, Palatino, art directors who think Geneva is a real font, inappropriately used comic book fonts... unless you're doing a "Eat at Joe's" sign, you're using the wrong font!, brush script, bad handwriting fonts, people who dont know what kerning is and anyone who use a script font in caps!!

Anything that is "frilly". And Comic Sans MS (which my school over uses-to my utter dismay they use it on absolutley everything. Heck, I've seen it in exams. Exams!).

I adore anything which is simple or modern.

EDIT: I also hate Papyrus with a vengance, along with Snap ICT. Oh, and any varient of Rockwell. And what is the point of dingbats!?

I can't stand Thesis. I can't stand it for one reason: The decender on the upper case Q. It's like they just stuck a tilde down there under an O, and it's so detached it really effects readability.

It's not part of the default Mac set (thank God), but I think it comes standard on most PCs. When somebody wants an olde-timey font, they go down the list alphabetically and the first thing they see (and settle on) is Algerian.

It's a beautiful font, but once I almost used it for a logo and then realized it's EVERYWHERE. Now it's kind of my curse in life - noticing that tell-tale capital "A" on business signs, menus - anything trying hard to invoke the look of a class establisment.

I can't stand the typeface used in stickies and (according to WWDC 2006) Leopard's forthcoming 'Notes' feature. Marker felt I think. I hope (and assume) I can customise the look of Notes.

What fonts do I hate...where do I begin...

Snowcap has to be one of the worst fonts ever. And the scary part, I think I actually used it once, ouch.
http://www.jdmsphoto.com/ftp/snowcap.png

And then there are the obligatory, illegible fonts like Jokerman which are used in every coffee shop. I actually had someone submit an ad to our paper entirely in this font! OUCH!
http://www.jdmsphoto.com/ftp/jokerman.png

And my current pet peeve is definitely Papyrus. In the last couple of years that font has become all the rage and is on everything for everyone. It has become the new Brush Script.
http://www.jdmsphoto.com/ftp/papyrus.png

Of course the list could go on and on, but these are three that come to mind.

A lot of this thread is just things people are tired of seeing. Of course, there are very good reasons to use the same typefaces over and over for things like word processing or the Web: choose something outside the standard set and it won't look right on other people's computers. A standard set is a Good Thing and very useful.
is there really any good fonts left after you guys pretty much listed everyone i know??? god..
I suppose you are still allowed to use Verdana. No one mentioned it yet, so I guess it's still acceptable even though it has a pretty high big'n'ugly factor.

I completely hate everything that comes preinstalled with the windows pcs and the macs.

Arial, Impact, eurostile....or any other free font.

The good stuff is ar fontshop.de and veer!!!

As to Helvetica being a boring and bad font.....it is kinda true. Helvetica Neue on the other hand is a beautiful typeface that can truly look great in the hands of a trained professional.

I love Helvetica *ducks, runs*. It's just clean.

any typeface can look bad if used improperly. any typeface can look good when used properly, EVEN comic sans (tho there may be a heck of a lot less times comic sans should be used compared to a classic like Akzidenz Grotesk or Futura, but you get the point)

personally, i stay away from all the Emigré faces - i just find them to be way to goofy and contrived to use for anything but the very occasional large size and small character count uses like titles and such.

my favorites are Sabon and Interstate, specifically a combination of Interstate small caps with Sabon body text.

OK here is a good one with a good story. The font I have hated forever is Hobo...look it up...its another one that is everywhere and is aweful. Here is the story: as a kid in school, all the teachers used this thing that cut letters out of paper to put on their bulletin boards and the only font they had was...you guessed it - Hobo. So these teachers would spell things out and ALWAYS make the A backwards or the O or E upsidedown and it drove me crazy. I was a geek back then and noticed that stuff, but I have hated it ever since.

I don't really hate fonts, its how're they're misused that creates the problem. Even in the Death To Comic Sans website they show one example of proper or allowable use.
