View Full Version : PowerBook 17" 2/20 people: anything?

I've read some posters who had received Feb. 20 as the ship date for the PowerBook 17". Have you heard anything? Has your date changed? Is it on its way?
Thanks.

I'll be screaming it around here if I actually see "Shipped" today. Not yet though.
With the momentium building lately, I am hoping Apple knows exactly what they are doing and planned 2/20 as their first ship date all along. No delays or anything...just a carefully executed launch plan.

I'm in the exact same boat as jackal. Every time my e-mail whistles at me that I have new mail, my heart skips a beat. Then I'm let down that it's not from Apple telling me that it's shipped.
I'll post again as soon as I know anything else.

Thanks Skandranon. I've compiled quite a list of information on the 17"...picture galleries, bags, stands, accessories. I'm assembling it into my blog site.
It'll be ready any day now. I may actually get the motivation to finally publish it today if Apple says "Shipped". :)
Then I can move on to part 2 of the information...personal experience!

The shoe has dropped.
Due to an unexpected supply delay, we are unable to ship the following item(s) by the last date you were quoted:
M8793LL/A, PBG4 17.0/1GHZ/512/60G/SD/AP/BT-USA
will now ship on or before 04/10/2003
I could email reply or call to confirm or cancel my order at this point. I chose to call, and the rep on the phone was rightfully apologetic. I appreciated that.
She didn't have any specifics on what the supply delay was, and also stressed that this is just the "next set of dates" they are given. It could certainly be shipped anytime between now and then.
Doing the math from my order date (1/7), today is 6 weeks and 2 days. That's still early for the 7-10 weeks they were quoting from day one, so I'll cross my fingers that it will still ship before the end of the month.
4/10/03 is 13 weeks and 2 days from my original order date. I hope it doesn't take that long, which is around how long I waited for my G4 450 and Cinema Display to be delivered in early 2000. :(

My Feb 20 ship date moved to March 20. Just today I got email notifying me that the carrying case I ordered was also pushed back to March 20.
I've come close to cancelling the order about 5 times now... since I'm not playing horseshoes or lobbing hand grenades, the order yet stands.

I'm staring at a screen that says on or before 4/1. I called apple and the guy told me that the eariest it is scheduled to go out is 3/19. I suggest everyone call apple and have them tell you when your "scheduled" ship date is; it likely will be different from your "on or before" date. By the way, the iMac I have is the only computer I've ever seen able to run a new operating system (jaguar) at suitable (a little on the slow side but not jumpy) speed. Windows XP seems to bog down the resources of even new computers unless you have 128MB DDR vid. card. Anyone agree?

No.
XP is bad, but not that bad. At least it is usable (good) at 256MB of system RAM. OS X can't really say that.
That being said, OS X RULEZ!!! or something...

I ordered mine on 2/1 and have had an on or before date of 4/1 ever since. (standard config)
I called yesterday for a question related to my order and while I had the guy on the phone asked if he had any more info on shipping dates. He said my scheduled ship date was March 16. I couldn't reach them today for an update though.
On a similar note....
Last week, in desperation I cut a tabloid piece of paper down to 15.4 x 10.2 and have had it sitting on my desk ever since. It gives a good visualization of how big this thing is so I no longer had to imagine it. Recommended for those of you who obsess as badly as I do. :p
I yet another note....
If they release the 15.4"s within the next couple weeks and those are available to ship, I'm changing my order.

Oh crapola! Another month to wait? Like I said in another post, this is almost as long as waiting for a baby (or longer in Chuck's case). What else is such a long wait? Perhaps having a house custom built is a little longer.
Okay, the real reason for the delay is one of the two monkeys got sick on the production line. And due to a supply shortage of fresh bananas, the remaining monkey can't eke out more than one new 17" a day. Bummer. Steve will have to find a better vine to swing from.
...and the saying goes "an Apple a day keeps the buyers away".
So why did Steve-o announce this so early before production? He had nothing else new to announce. New LCDs? Hardly. New PowerMacs? LOL. As much as I love Macworld, it is a flawed marketing concept that's not selling as many Macs for Apple as it really could.
Okay, enough ranting...for today.

OK, this is Nucking Futs. I've been one of those telling people who ordered in February to basically shut up (although I was nicer about it) because they ordered so late.
But like Uber, I ordered the instant this machine was available online and now my ship date is "oob 4/10" ??? THIS is crazy. I REALLY wanted this machine. I forked over the money and went for it instead of the 15" and was willing to wait. But I NEED (not want, but actually NEED) this machine before 10 April.
I'm having difficulty expressing my anger right now. Rrrrgh.

This delay is not good ... christ knows when I'll get mine (in the UK). I think a call to the AppleStore is needed.

The Apple store says 4-6 weeks now, so that number is falling. But then all I hear of is dates being pushed out.
Jane, are you sure yours is coming the beginning of March? Spymac says units won't be shipping until end of March or April. Is this crazy or what? I may just cancel my order as this is extremely disappointing on Apple's part.

As one who is also waiting, I have to say that I don't think I would have chosen any other product line that apple has right now. This is a long wait but when we actually receive the 17" powerbook, it's going to be better than anything else out there including the desktop in my opinion. The idea of cancelling this order to purchase a 15" is bogus. You're not doing yourself any favors. I see this one lasting for quite some time with that nice size screen.
Dont cancel. Just wait it out. You will be extremely glad that you did. I am one that also has made the paper copy of 15 x 10.5. :D If only it really worked.

that they would have faster chips and things...

The trick is to balance your need/desire to have the fastest chip versus your need/desire to have the "best" machine.
For those of us waiting in line for the 17" Powerbook, I believe we have chosen the latter.
I'm typing on a Pismo 500 G3, and raw processor speed is pretty much last on my list of at least 5 things I'm looking to improve upon by moving up to the 17".
If Apple bumps the speed to 1.25 Ghz in say June, I won't be bummed. Provided the machines don't have major flaws (go AppleCare!), I'll be more proud to own one of the original 17" PowerBooks.

My Dual 1Ghz was stolen over Xmas - I NEED a new machine. But I hope/pray/expect new chip/design desktops from Apple this year. So - I buy a top range powerbook and I'll still have a stunning 2nd machine when I upgrade the desktop.

A nice SHORT thing I just came up with that makes no sense at all:
I love the 17" Aluminum PowerBook G4 from Apple. With the expansive 17" LCD, the backlit keyboard with the two ambient light sensors that constantly adjust the settings, Airport Extreme and built in Bluetooth, I can do virtually everything I want from Mail, iChat and Safari to Pro Tools, Final Cut Pro and iLife anytime I want, anywhere. Everything works beautifully on this wickedly fast machine with a 1ghz G4 processor. And for under 4 grand, it's worth it!
And of course it's the best machine i've ever used for programming.

i talked to my apple store guy a couple weeks ago and he told me that they will recieve a couple of them in around the 1st of march (prob. delayed further by now). he told me that they will have some to display and some to sell. he then told me that i should fill out the contact me thing on one of the display macs and that they would let me know when the pb arrives. he said to come right in tho cuz they will only hold it for me for about a day. this all sounds nice but i just dont buy it with all of the shipping dates being pushed back.. its too bad.

I was surfing the powerbook central and saw the following statement:
"I spoke to someone who is close to inside people at Apple and I hear that the 17 inch PowerBook is not shipping because after using the first few ones that were around, the users found that the screen was not placed on a rigid enough backing (the top of the PowerBook) and tended to crack. That could make sense considering the size of the screen and the Aluminum casing. I hear that they are trying to resolve the issue and that is what is holding the shipments back."
Übergeek, can you confirm this? Does the screen feel weak or soft? This could be a reasonable excuse for Apple to delay the shipments till they fix the problem. If it really is the problem that is.
Thanks

Just remember that it may take a while for you to be able to walk in to a store and get a 17" PowerBook. Your fastest option might be to just leave your order in place.
Unless you have other reasons for canceling it?

Apple has shipped limited numbers of 17-inch PowerBooks to corporate users, I'm told. A friend of mine (PC User) said he got one, and is very impressed.
He could just be an idiot and referring to a 12-incher, though.

LOL, hard to mix up 12 and 17 inchers...
Anyway, I was thinking of the same thing, since my supplier keeps saying on or before 28:th Feb. My powerbook is #2 order at the swedish distributors list, but I doubt that I will get mine before others though.
I guess of a scenario like this:
The american corporate resellers get the 17PB first, around last week of feb / first week of march.
A week or two later, other resellers get their, translated powerbooks.
When those lists are filled, they start shipping to individuals, mostly to appleStore-buyers.
Well, that's what I think.
/ filipp
P.S. Because of the hardware-delay, the manuals and other documents may already be translated when shipments start, then we can see the powerbooks poping up all around the world.

could be true but i played with a 12" and the back seemed extremely strong when compared to the 15". you had to put a lot of force onto the back to make the screen distort while on the 15" only a little force would make the screen distort. also isnt this alluminum stuff stronger than the old titanium?

fine, one of the best. The best laptop hands down though.
I checked out the LCD, it doesn't feel *that* bad, perhaps a little flimsy but strong.
And of course aircraft grade aluminum is pretty strong but titanium has that look I like. Both metals are highly durable.

Still no status change for this 2/20'er. On or before 10 April.

FlamDrag, maybe you are like me (ordered 1/7, initial date of 2/20) and received a call from Apple about 10 days ago, verifying they would meet the original 7-10 week window.
I called him back this morning, and there is no new information. They are still planning to meet the original deadline of March 18.
That's a week from tomorrow. I have faith.
FlamDrag

With whom did you speak? I received no such call and didn't get an e-mail when the 2/20 deadline was missed even though they have my accurate information...

Mar 10, 2003, 01:26 PM
I spoke to someone named Michael at an 800# and extension he left for me on my home answering machine, again about 10 days ago. I called him back the next day. I felt like calling him out of the blue this morning, politely asking if he heard anything new.
I don't know his position or job function, only that he had a short list of people who ordered early and had maybe been given conflicting or changing information since 1/7. He initially called to assure me that the original 7-10 week estimate was still intact, something he affirmed this morning as I said. He specifically said March 18, which is precisely 10 weeks from 1/7, so it's a date that has been fresh in his head.
As for 2/20, I received an email before the end of the day that "Due to an unexpected supply delay" they were unable to meet this date (even though it was only around 6 weeks). The email asked me to call or reply to confirm whether they should keep processing my order or cancel. That is when they adjusted my date to April 10, which is precisely 7 weeks from that day.
So I do not believe I will wait until 4/10...that is just the outermost date for anyone ordering a new machine that day. I believe my PowerBook will ship out a week from tomorrow at the latest.
Given your dates are perfectly aligned with mine, you're probably in the same batch as me.

I just checked Tech Data's (distributor) availability. They're expecting a shipment of 1000 17" Powerbooks on 3/11 and another 100 on 3/15. Granted, these are "expected" dates, but if they hold true, it's great news.

Oh right, so you need to have a number etc to type in... And there's no general shipping status page for the product generally which would be a great help.
Anyway, I ordered mine through a reseller, not Apple Australia so I'm in the dark in terms of checking order status.

Hey nano, fatherhood is just great. I'm so blown away by Chloé and how she's already got her own little personality. At first I was just amazed at how God designed us to make a complete human being in just nine months out of an egg so small you could barely see it, but now I'm amazed at the idea of a whole new person with a whole new personality is just made out of nothing!
Anyway, I'm sure there's plenty more surprises where they came from. There are just so many incredible things about the creation and growth of human beings.
Oh, on a more practical note, I'm being quite an expert on efficient nappy changes and burping the little munchkin.
My token 17" comment - to make this post relevant - is that I am hoping the Australia shipment arrives in the next couple of weeks. That would suit my current workload (ie time spent getting to know the machine) really well.

Cute indeed. My friends just had a baby, but they are PC users (not that there's anything wrong with that) and not waiting for the 17" to arrive.
I am so ready for my 17". My G4 tower just sputters under OS X sometimes, and it drives me nuts. Waiting for the "shoe" to fit (OS X I mean).

Get this... I was promised a powerbook for graduation last may by my parents and I told them I was gonna wait for the newest model (hopefully a 970). When I saw the 17inch at the keynote, I almost fainted (I know I'm nerd). So I convinced my parents to make the $4000 plunge (with 1gig of ram, ap base station and new printer and new 150 dollar monsoon speakers; I went all out with this one). Well, I got the student discount, and I was all satisfied with my oob date of 4/1. Well, after watching all the posts I saw something of a student ADC discount. Well, the ADC discount for the 17inch pb is almost 600. I couldn't resist so I had to cancel my order! I re-ordered and now I have to wait another f&$$*ING month for my computer. And to make it worse, I went to the apple store and saw the non-functioning unit; It's sooooooooooo gorgeous. I hate waiting. Someone make me feel better. And to you people who are whining about the 17inch resolution, STOP; it's annoying, it makes me feel less sure about spending my parents money
BTW: Can we start a new post for this stuff. I think anyone who received a shipment notice should post. but in the meantime, let's start a new post... this 3 page stuff is annoying.

Know that the wait will be worth it.
BTW, you can click on "Go to first unread post" and that'll skip the first two pages.
Also, I haven't seen one forum where someone has received one. But when they do, I am sure they will be posting. Supposedly starting to ship on Saturday.

It's melissa. When making fun of someone for saying something stupid, it's always good to make sure you can spell first.

I saw it spelled that way while watching that stupid show and made a mental note of it. Unless I wasn't paying attention and one of the other Melissa's spells it with two l's and one s. I wouldn't just make it up dude. sheesh. It's one of the funniest things I've heard in a long time.
No need for a new thread, this one is perfectly titled. Once they arrive, THEN a new thread for sure.
Chuck, your little girl is simply adorable. Keep up the good work.

I called my reseller and they think they will get them by end of the month to mid-April for those who ordered initially. Today is my 7th week from ordering but I expect it closer to my 9-10th week out. So we are 7/10ths of the way there...a little more to go, but the wait is unbearable.
Apparently, the rep said Apple is repackaging the 17". That could mean anything. Better chip? Nah. 2x DVD drive? Wouldn't that be nice. Or perhaps just a new cardboard box design for all we know.

I love how these Apple reps always drop little hints about the goings on of things.
Repackaging... hmmmmm...

The rumour is that Apple is waiting for the latest and fastest G4 Chip from IBM to be installed in the 17PB. If that is the case, I think it's worth the wait. My status remains: "On or before 26 March"....still holding my breath.:o

"Good news for those who ordered the 17" PowerBooks. We have received information that the 17" AlBooks will begin shipping in under 2 weeks time, right on schedule. Rumors have been floating around regarding possible delays for the PowerBooks, but those have apparently been incorrect. The AlBooks will begin shipping in less than two weeks to those customers who ordered in early January after the announcement. PowerBooks are available to new customers on Apple's retail website with a lead time of 3-5 weeks, down from the initial 7-10 weeks."
Looks promising...

If you remember my previous post earlier about having to wait another 21 days for my pb, something new happened. For reasons that would require me to write another paragraph to explain, I had to cancel my ADC student order and re-order it today. Well, when I re-ordered it today, I now have an OoB date of 4.17. That is strange considering the order was made on 3/13 and the other order (with an OoB date of 4/21) was made on 3/10.
Also, a little loophole for potential buyers of anything. If you select the system online (and do not add any extras to the order like base station, etc.), and then select the extra shipping, the shipping will end up costing you less. Here is what you do. Add items to the order the next day and magically, the cost for faster shipping does not change. I can't really explain why; they guy on the phone said it's just how the system works. But, I did test this by attempting to make a new order and adding all the items at once... twice the shipping amount. When I made my first order the shipping remained at the initial extra cost when ordering the pb alone.

Well Amazon says tomorrow is the release date for the PB 17. Maybe a few will go out, but the rumor sites have all been saying end of month. Who will be the lucky ones to get it first?

I tried buying the 1gig 15" ti from my school (there was smokin' deal where I got it for less than $2k) and they said that apple told them they had a glitch in the system and was not shipping the powerbooks till the 18th or 19th. Then added that apple was going to send them all the new powerbooks they had ordered on that day. Of course this doesn't meen that the 17" was part of the shipment, but I'm tempted to cancel my 15" to get a newer al book.
Anyway, just thought I'd share :).

Well it looks like there will be at least a few 17"PBs floating around in the next couple of weeks, and I'm assuming you guys in the US will get yours before me here in Australia, so....
You've got to promise to put a few pictures up and do a comprehensive 'first impressions' post!!! (not too much to ask is it?)
;)
