View Full Version : How Fast Do You Drive?

MACDRIVE
Jun 29, 2006, 05:10 AM
Most of the streets in the city I live in are 40mph(64kmh) zones. With the short distance in between stop lights, by the time you reach 40mph, it's time to stop for the red light. People over here are in a constant state of hurry. If they can get to 50mph(80kmh) before the light turns red, they will do so. They are always waiting at the red light before I get there since I drive 35mph(56kmh) most of the time. Why so slow you ask? Because the way I see it, the faster you drive between red lights, the longer you have to wait at the red light when you get there.

Am I wrong to drive 5mph(8.5kmh) below the speed limit? I just don't see the point in driving the speed limit, or 5-10mph(8.5-17kmh) above the speed limit, since you have to slam on your brakes when you get to the red light anyway.

Plus you save on gas by driving slower rather than gunning it. The best is when drive slower and the person next to guns it then you meet again at the next light. Just smile and wave and let them feel good about beating you to a stop.

I'm with MACDRIVE - no point in hurtling towards anything really, just to slam the brakes on at the last minute. Festina lente for me. As for the open road, that can be a different thing - but we so rarely have those in the UK, I have forgotten what they are like. And, as edesignuk states, depends on what music is playing. :)

Never more than about 6 mph over the limit. There is no point to going much faster.

When I used to have my car I'd hardly ever drive at the speed limit in town, always under it, I'd go as fast as would feel safe on the road. If its a big open road with good viewability of the road ahead and pedestrians around then sure I'll go at the speed limit. If its a narrow road winding around houses I'll slow right down and crawel along.
I drive like a grandma on country roads, people just don't realise how dangerous they are.

I have to admit it is a bit rich all of this coming from me since I lost my license due to speeding a couple of years back. It was 3am though, big straight motorway and not a single car in sight. :o

Autoroutes here top out at 130, and my poor Focus has a hard time going much above that :o . For the mountain roads, I'm definitely in the slower minority, since people here fly around curves  .

The French are really good drivers IMO. They drive fast but they use common sense about what's ahead and what distance to keep with regards the vehicle in front. They also know how to use the autoroutes properly, unlike the British who just hog the middle lane.

In the UK, I'll pretty much keep to the speed limit. Never used to, but came to the conclusion that it's better to arrive 5 minutes late than never arrive at all, or even worse, seriously hurt someone else in the process. In France, I will ever so slightly speed because the roads are so good, and in Spain and Italy, just tightly grip the steering wheel and pray that I don't die. You don't even contemplate speeding when everyone around you is being a complete idiot.

EDIT: Aha. I've got a processor upgrade :)

On motorways I can average out at 80mph, but on city roads I stick to the speed limit. I've experienced running someone over (their fault, and they were damn lucky I was slowing down to park. He evidentally hadn't been told to look both ways before crossing the road. In his 20's too!! ) and I'm not keen to repeat the exercise.

When I was in the States last month I did hammer my rental (Pontiac Grand Prix) for about a mile or two to see how it performed... but it was an empty stretch of road.

I agree about the quality of autoroutes here, coming from California. They are for the most part phenomenal, with great services to boot. Traffic also flows much better, since people actually move to the right when not passing someone.

Italy is crazy, since slow folks are going 100, while faster ones 170, all over the place. I feel wayyyy less safe when across the border.

Never through it, but round it often enough on the Orbital. That gets a bit hairy with the roads constantly splitting and merging around you and all the lane changing that goes with it, but I'd rather take a day of that over one hour driving around Barcelona :)

And don't you just love the way they'll sit fifty centimetres off your back bumper and try and force you to go faster rather than overtake. Italians are easily the worst drivers in Europe, even more so than the Spanish.

I'm guessing you've not had the "pleasure" of driving in Greece, then. Wow. They make the Italians look patient. I've not done much autoroute driving there, but the around-town bit is much worse than Italy.

Hmm, I-95....80, I-4, 80, I-75,80

I pretty much go 80 while I'm on the highway.

If I see a cop/state trooper's car I slow down.

I've gone to 100 before, but just to see what it was like and I promptly sped back down.

As for city streets, here in Jax they are so far between lights that most just go 60. I usually go about 55 though.

I live in a "rural"ish area, so I have to worry more about stop signs at empty 4-way intersections than traffic or red lights.
That said, I like 5-10 over the limit. As long as I don't get a ticket before I get my license

I usually go about 10-15 km over, but I don't race people to the next red light. Just seems dumb to me. I can be pretty aggresive when someone is going too slow though. On the highway, I set the cruise control for exactly 10 km over the posted limit. Insurance is a killer with too many speeding tickets.

I speed pretty badly on the highway, 10-20 over most of the time. Even though I know I shouldn't be speeding, nothing makes me angrier than somebody driving the speed limit in the left lane when even the right lane is going faster than them. It's inconsiderate and dangerous. I could care less if I'm stuck behind some puttering granny in the right lane. She can go as slow as she wants as long as she stays right.

Depends on my mood. Normally with in 5 of the limit. For around the city that bettween 35-45 mph. off stop light I normally pick up speed faster than everyone else because I like the extra room to move around if I have 2. Plus the car I drive pick up is a lot better than normal cars. It has a fairly larger enginee for it size and geared to match.

For interstate driving I normally set my cruise at 75 mph and go with it (other wise 5 over the limit). Like people above I hate left lane campus because it is not safe. The left lane is for PASSING ONLY come on people understand that.

As for a even larger pet peiev of min is when I driving though houston or other major city and there always some idoit not going the speed of traffic. I dont care what the speed limit says match the speed of traffic because other wise you the guy going slower than everyone else is a huge danager on the road. Also the last place your eyes should be going in that type of traffic is to you speedo or you gages. That means you have to take your eyes off the road and you are forcing you speed to match. Really not safe at all. In going thoug houston (speed limit 60mph) I have had the highway speed ranging from 50-80mph. That not me passing cars left and right or being passed left and right that is the flow of traffic and everyone should match it (plus as I said before you shouldnt be watching you speedo any ways.) A huge reason is when you releize how heavy the traffic is. I used ot having 1.5-2 car lenths in frount of me and behind me. Cars move in and out of that distance. I have to chance lane into spots that are about that big. Have cars changing around me like that. So at the speed we are going and how close we are there not much room for some idoited who can not match the flow of traffic. We can not move around you. You may not be in the wreck but you the slow driver was the one who caused it to happen. And like I said in stuff like that you should not really be watching you gages at all. On a normal drive though houston I see my speedo the last time just north and I dont see it again until I get to the south side of town (A good 40-60mins)

If you can not handle that stress or that speed DONT DRIVE ON THE FREEWAYS though major cities that simple. It danagers if you can not match the flow of traffic.

The freeway speed limit here is 65 mph. With that said I normally range between 70-82 mph. Sometimes when I'm not paying attention to my speedometer it has creeped up to 90-94 mph. Don't really care about left lane campers since normally there are 4-5 lanes to choose from on our freeways in town, though on two lane highways they can get annoying.

Surface streets are different I normally go slightly over the speed limit but not much. If the light is red I'll coast to it so hopefully when I get there it will be green.

I usually always obey the speed limit unless I'm driving to Vegas:cool:

Does your car fall apart on the crappy I-15 between Baker, Ca and the border with Nevada?

In Chicago the highway speed limit is 55 MPH. If traffic is loose enough to allow for it I usually go about 80-85. A few weeks ago I just got my first speeding ticket in 7 years - going 67 in a 45 MPH zone. The cop was nice enough to knock it down to 65 on the write-up for me though.

Jun 29, 2006, 12:41 PM
speed limit-3mph over usually, which means about 35-38 most of the time. i figure no cop'll pull me over for that and if they do i can just say my speedometer said i was going the limit. on highways i rarely go over the limit, but thats not my choice. i dont wanna see what happens to my car over 70.

my dad's crazy though. he'll easily go 10-20mph over the speed limit and hes never gotten a ticket. 65 in a 40 is scary from the passenger seat though.

but you didn't hear it from me. :p

BUT I don't do it in an unsafe manner. I won't do 60 in a 35. I usually just keep up with the flow of traffic.

There's one street near me that I don't like.. People do 60-70 down it, and it's a 35. Eventually the residents of the neighborhood called in the Police to give tickets... 90% of the people they pulled over for speeding LIVED IN THAT NEIGHBORHOOD.
I keep up there, just because if I go 35 on that street, I'll get rear-ended by a giant SUV that gets 3 MPG while the driver is talking on their cell, putting on make up, and doing their hair.

Oh yeah, and left lane campers suck.

120-130 km/h on the highway (speed limit is 100 but no one respects it)
In town, 70-75 on boulevards and 60-65 on residential streets, unless its a school zone or the speed limit is lower then 50 for some reasons

Sometimes I go way faster then that, but its not the kinda things I like to brag about.

75 (MPH) on the highway, 80 if no one is around...

I'm with MACDRIVE only I usually do the exact speed limit.

I used to be like everyone else, speeding. But then something happened. I got several tickets and then the last straw was when I was the SLOWEST car on the road on I-95 going 80 and the cop pulled me over just because I have a sports car. My insurance shot up and I had to go to driving school to get it down a little.

Once I started going the speed limit I noticed how many people go at least 5 over. And then it hit me, everyone was stressing out to get where they are going and I wasn't anymore. I am more relaxed and generally enjoy the drive now. And guess what? most of the time the speeders get to where they want to go maybe 30 seconds faster than I do and sometimes not faster at all. Oh and here's a secret. City's time lights for the speed limit. When you go the speed limit you typically have to stop at less lights.

Sure people get pissed off when I am on a single lane road but you know what? I DONT CARE because they are the ones who want to break the law. Nothing makes me laugh more than someone who is trying to push me off the road, it just makes me turn the music up and smile. Driving is bliss now and fun! :D

The only time I go over the speed limit is on 95 because if I don't I will get killed. Everyone typically goes 75 in the middle lane and 80-90 in the left ... well that's when the daily traffic jam isn't in effect (rush hour).

And yes, even I think left lane campers SUCK, but only on the highway because technically the left lane isn't a passing lane on a regular road.

Depends on the road and my mood. I have gone as fast as 110 in the states and about about 125 on the autobahn near Frankfurt.
Now that I drive my Jeep most of the time, I pretty much do the speed limit or 5-10 over.

On the highway, we usually take my wife's Passat wagon, and I rarely go more than 10 over the posted limit, because that seems to be a "safe" number where the LAW won't pull you over.

On the other hand, with my radar detector and a front door, I will go pretty fast.
I managed to follow some guy in a Porsche from just north of Providence, RI to the new hampshire border, roughly 100 miles, going 90-100 the whole time. I just followed him about 1/2 mile back in case he got busted. :D

Limit? What do you mean, "limit"? Those numbers on the little white signs aren't for decoration? I pass them so quick it's hard to discern what they mean. :D

Seriously, I drive so much w/ my dog (who loves to put her head out the window) that I max out @ 5 mph over the speed limit. And that's in realtively traffic-free conditions. Any faster and I just wouldn't feel in proper control of my car.

Here in Texas the highway speed limits are either 60 or 65. I'll usually drive at least 5 miles over (because honestly... what cop is going to pull me over for that?), but depending on my mood I can get up to 75 or 80. The fastest I've ever driven was 90, so I'm not that crazy of a driver.

On local roads I try to stay anywhere between the speed limit and 5 over.

This is highly dependent on what kind of music I listen to. Lately it's been depressing acoustic stuff, so I've been pretty chill and haven't sped much.

I'm finding I don't pay attention to speed as much as I do to timing. I read a few years ago that the worst offender to gas mileage was the brakes. Stop braking and you get great mileage. So, I try to vary my speeds so that I use them as little as possible. It's a challenge on the way in to work, but on the way home, much easier.

I drive quite fast -- usually 10mph above limit in city and around 85mph on freeway (and only to maintain my clean driving record -- otherwise I'd find it safe to drive 90-100mph). In Europe I drive around 140-150kph on the freeway.

I do find that I get to places quite a bit faster than other people.

Well considering I live in Washington State, the cops love busting people for speeding (8mph over), everyone goes the speed limit. I still go about 10 mph if it is the highway or a main road. I do the limit in neighborhoods.

Then it depends on what car I am driving. If I am taking the Suburban, I go about 5 over. If it is the New Beatle(turbo) or IS350 then its whatever I want to do. Just got to be smart about where cops are. Never used a radar detector.

Same here. It's also the degree of error that's allowed by Australian Design Rules when it comes to speedometer calibrations so technically if my speedo is accurate (and it is quite) I cannot legally be charged or fined for the 10% discrepancy.

Unfortunately there are other state-based laws that overrule this so it's a bit of a grey area but it doesn't really matter because only the mean policemen would ever pull someone over for such a small speed infraction.

My job is driving-based so IMO, the speed limits are pathetically low anyway. I think driving 10% over the limit is safer than driving massively under the speed limit too.

For the states, just shy of 15 over the limit on local and up to 100 on the highway, both traffic-pending. I go a little past 100 if it's late at night and I'm on a road I'm faimilar with having no cops on, because it feels pretty lame to clip along at 60mph when you're on an empty straightaway for the next 10 minutes.

I don't drive in Taiwan (on study abroad right now) but I can imagine that if I drove here, it would be very very slow. The traffic here is mind-boggling.

I haven't seen premium around here for under $3.37/gal for a while. Though I normally buy regular, wohoo for $3.15/gal  .

To think I was paying $1.80/gal back in 2003.

Please let some of know where you are in the states, so that we can watch out for you!

Keep in mind in some states driving 15+ over the posted limit is reckless driving, and your driving privileges could be suspended or revoked.

Anything 99+ in California is an automatic misdemeanor, they have the option to give you felony reckless driving. It would be an automatic ticket to jail and a trip to the impound yard for your car. Not too smart really...

At home and around town I keep it near the speed limit.... Makes no sense to hurry to another red light or to the next traffic jam.

However, when you are talking about a 800-1000mile trip on the interstate... a 5 mph higher average can mean an hour difference or more. On those trips I will max out around 80.

I don't know how you california drivers tolerate those high prices. 2.79 is near the worst I have see down here. Just 8 months ago it was only 2.09.

I'll do 70 on all freeways when there is other traffic (unless the posted limit is higher), the posted when there isn't. About 5-8 over when doing intown driving, unless I know that the next light will is red (then i amble).

But, that is only when driving my Civic. My driving speed is based more on trying to keep the engine running at lower speeds than how fast I am actually going...

Congrats to California!

IMO anything over 20+ over the posted should be a felony. With revocation of driving privileges for 2 years. The same for anyone running a red light (not yellow, they would be revoked for 6 months). It is time for us to regain our streets and highways from those that think that laws mean nothing. Who are they to pick and choose what laws they will obey?

Yes, I am mad. Why should I have to delay my travels - since many seem to want to run red lights (not just yellow lights)? Why should I have to be concerned about an idiot that rides my bumper in 35 mph zone- flashing their lights, when I am doing 40 mph? Why do I have to drive with caution, when I have the clear right of way, when idiots have the stop sign and choose to ignore it?

There are laws people. If you don't like them. Then get them changed. Until then obey them.

Get over it. There are many more of us that are fed up up with your idiot ways. Those of you that feel that it is your God given right to flaunt our laws.

Never more than about 6 mph over the limit. There is no point to going much faster.

Depends on the limit. If you're in a 30 limit, you'll be treated no differently if you're doing 36 or 63 over here. I got my first speeding ticket last week, the policeman was waiting at the entrance to a 40 limit, catching people (like me) who were speeding up from 30 before they got to the sign. £60 fine and 3 points for doing 37.

On the other hand, if you're in a 70 limit, you normally won't be fined until you do over 80.

The left lane is for PASSING ONLY come on people understand that.

Yeah, but it is also not called the lawbreaking lane for a reason.

Back it down to 5 or so over for my own saftey if not yours.

Personally, I find the state of driving in this country disgusting. It's like sharing the road with a bunch of 5-year-old brats.

I was on I-97 yesterday and going 72 in a 65 (passing a car on the left steadily), and this bozo comes behind me and starts flashing his head lights and almost attemtping to pass on the shoulder. It's a good thing I sold my guns. I was obvioulsy passing, and just beacuse its the left lane does not mean you can go 90.

Then there are the people that weave in and out of traffic to beat me by 10 seconds to the next light. Wow, that's brilliant.

Driving today reflects much of the current "me" mentality in this country. No one cares what anyone thinks as long as they are happy, and unfortunately police seem void from the highways toady, compared to when I was learning how to drive. Cell phones also ned to be banned everywhere.

Blah. *pissed*

There's no speed limit on highways, but I usually avoid exceeding 100mph—unless I'm really in a hurry.

Price for regular around my place: 1.33€/l —> $6.39/gal

Of course, most of it is fuel tax, and 16% VAT.
