I select it as the default to open .doc files and for some reason it still opens .doc files in textedit if you double click it. Right clicking it still shows that textedit is the default when I specificaly made Pages the default. Any suggestions?

If you right-click on a .doc file, and go to the "Open With:" section, select Pages, and also click the button that says "Change All." Without doing that, only the particular file that you changed will open in Pages by default.
you could also click on the document and select "get info". under the open with heading you can select pages and then click the button beneath it to open all .doc files in pages

You can't do it through the "Open With" menu item directly, even through the "Other..." option. You have to select "Get Info" from the pop-up menu (or just hit Command-I with the file highlighted)...then in the "Open with:" section of that window you'll see a button for "Change all..."
