I was actually thinking this as well...I think its possible, but I think it'd more likely be 19" inches if they do release one.

These are not laptops. Notebook-type computers that are 19" and above (some may place 17" in this category as well) are desktops that can be easily transported if necessary.

17.3 Pounds. whoa...
Don't forget though, a lot of these other computer companies advertise a screen size that isn't always 100% accurate. I have a 17 Inch Dell and it is nowhere as big (screen wise) as the 17 Inch MBP. If apple put out a 20 inch MBP, it would be even bigger than this...

That's because the MBP is widescreen, so the extra width makes it look bigger.

There was a huge thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=205446) here last May and on digg about that Dell behemoth...
Apple was the first to introduce a 17" laptop, but I'm thinking that 20" is just too big...

If they have a battery is a portable big laptop.
Ugly? yes, but Apple maybe make a best concept...
I see the acer in a shopping, is incredible big display, i prefer a big laptop that a desktop because i live in 2 countrys and travel with the big box it so heavy.
This is my reason ;)

20" is too big for a laptop or notebook- apple might aswel add a battery option to the iMac if they were going to do that cos lets face it that Dell is basicly a bad rip off of the iMac! And the Acer would just be unusuable as a laptop anyway its just too heavy you couldnt carry it around without breaking your back.

Man, that 20-inches is a bit overdone. No one needs a laptop that big, and there's no way that anyone would be able to carry that thing around. 17" is probably the limit.

They have the 20" Acer in display at CompUSA; it is so ridiculously large that it isn't even funny. It's sole purpose is basically to be able to be moved from room to room, etc. There's no scenario where it would be useful where a laptop or notebook is right now.

I don't think it's certain that Apple would never do it. But they won't do it until... it can get at least 3 hours of battery life, weigh less than eight pounds, and be relatively close to 1" thick.

its just a portable desktop. you guys acting like they are somehow useless because they dont go on your lap are morons. its for people who need to move their desktop around alot and dont want to lug a friggin tower and monitor around.

;) Not much the portable meaning at my opinion... but a nice replacement for a desktop computer and still have some mobility!

Nah, I'd prefer a 20'' laptop in this case... an iMac is heavy... not counting that you'd have to plug in the wall everytime you needed to use it lol :p

good lord, sometimes i get sick of carrying around my mbp on campus, i imagine a 20 incher would cause some serious irreversible back damage.....dang!
i even got to use my friends 17 inch mbp when she was gone (she didnt want to leave it at home, theft-wise from her roomies) and i nearly died carrying it around
i could not even imagine that, do they even make backpacks that big?

yes, 20" is much too large for a laptop...but that wouldn't stop people from buying it for bragging rights. There are of course the same people that "require" 2gb of ram for checking their e-mail.

whats your point? there is more than one computer company in the world. shocking!

What a joke. Same resolution as the 17" MBP- what's the big deal!

I think its less diffcult to read or work in a small display with the same resolution.

I don't know. The 17'' seems to accomodate its resolution just fine. I might see your point if that were the resolution on a 15'' or lower, but 17'' is fine. 20'' should have 1900x1200, not 1680x1050. (If that is, in fact, the resolution of the 20'' Acer)

I guess, but the thought of lugging around a 20" display just so I can play doom III in a coffee shop seems like a bit much.

yes, we supoused 1920x1200 pixels.
If the new MBP 17" dont have this resolution, a big desilusion for us.

i dont think the dell one looks all that bad, kinda clunky but the keyboard thing is kinda neat. A disgusting price tag though...
Imagine carrying that Acer one around? damn, i hate carrying around my macbook with a few textbooks let alone a 20lbs "lap"top...
hehe but thing how funny it would be to see some student bust out that beast in english class lol

Sep 10, 2006, 05:05 PM
No imagine a student with a big laptop, but i think is a good choice for a "Pro"
I like it so much a portable desktop, and if i need a small laptop i use it the macbook wife ;)

L33tdawg: Personally, I think 17 inches is already pretty massive not to mention it already weighs a ton! If you intend to use the notebook as a desktop replacement, then hell-yeah, 20 inches sounds mighty sweet -- but unless you're a body builder, I doubt the thought of lugging what could possibly weigh 6 or more kilos entices you all that much.
Apple reduce to 4kg max.

"But are consumers ready to lug around a 20-inch laptop? Shim said that displays measuring 15 inches and 17 inches on the diagonal--once considered too big to carry around--are now among the more popular versions.
Even larger screen sizes are in the pipeline. Samsung has already shown its upcoming 19-inch laptop to CNET Reviews. The product is expected to ship later this year. Dell, a major partner of Samsung, could easily adopt the large screen format for its high-end XPS laptops. And, LG Philips is also touting its 20-inch LCD displays for laptops, Shim said.
But noteworthy to Shim is the speed with which computer makers are replacing standard formats with wide-screen displays. "It won't be that hard for suppliers and computer makers to transition to the larger sizes," Shim said. "It's really just a matter of being more efficient. Samsung and LG Philips have this larger piece of mother glass and then cut it down and convert it into individual units to cut down on waste."
