View Full Version : Pricey fashion items?

Demon Hunter

This is sort of an online confession. I just bought a pair of boots. The price of these boots? $498.

How did this happen? I'm not sure. As the stereotype goes, Mac users are fashionable individuals. Maybe I'm an extreme case.

Anyone else? We can start a support group. :)

Yeah I agree. I am not really a boot wearing type of guy, but i've found myself trying on some rather expensive jeans from time to time. Sometimes I bite, sometime I realize, what I am thinking... that could go towards a new Mac!

Yeah, I thought of that as well. Apple gets enough of my money as it is. :)

Obviously that's not true.

I guess I'm not much of a Mac user. I'm happiest in an old T-shirt, jeans, and tennis shoes. :o

But maybe I can buy more Apple toys instead of dressing better.

I wish you luck with your support group.

I've got a nice pair of Dirk Bikkemberg Boots (not big boot, ankle height), they were $980. I got them a few years ago, they still look like new. But they were a tad on the expensive side.

Living in Silicon Valley, I have quite a few friends with enough money to splurge. $12k couches, $20k watches, $200+k cars, $700 cashmere sweaters, Prada sneakers, etc.

Looking at them, I've found that if the person is generally a happy, well-balanced person to begin with, then yes, those things will probably make the person a little happier even. However, if people who are generally grumpy and unhappy in life try to make themselves happy with buying a new car every 6 months, and a new house every 2 years, that never works, and they are just as unhappy inmidst all their luxury items as they were before.

For myself, I love nice things, but try to buy them at discounted prices (store sales, outlet stores, etc.), and would probably still do that if I had a lot of money.

Why is it you can take a $30 pair of <insert item of clothing here>, slap the name of some loopy designer on them, and suddenly they're worth their weight in platinum twice over? Maybe I'm too pragmatic but that makes no sense to me at all, along with paying a huge markup just to give Frumpy McFashion some free advertising.

Someone who equates price to quality bought me a pair of "designer" jeans once. Inside of six months they were useless (a giant hole in a naughty area had formed). The $30 pair of jeans I bought out of the Land's End catalog three years ago still look like the day I got them. They fit better, too.

I care about quality. I could care less about whose name is on it.

I hate people who used to wear Calvin Klein t-shirts where his name is printed rather large on the front of the shirt in plain sight.

If your name isn't Calvin Klein, don't wear shirts with his name on it. It's weird, weirdo.

Lately I've been upgrading my wardrobe a bit... bought a couple of nice Lacoste shirts, a couple of Ralph Lauren Polo shirts, some other stuff at the new Ralph Lauren store here in Charlotte. We just got a Neiman Marcus store here, too, and I really like some of the Burberry polo shirts they have.

I guess my one big fashion purchase lately (this year, anyway) was my Buzz Rickson's bomber jacket... $550, but worth every penny.

Mac users are fashionable individuals.

I guess that's why I've ended up preferring Windows for everyday use :o

I'm not a fashionable guy. But I do buy decent stuff although most of it tends to be rather 'old school'. Hugo Boss, Paul Smith, Jaeger, Zegna and Armani are my default makers, and I have some suits from Oswald Boateng.

The likes of Ralph Lauren, Lacoste and Burberry are a little too White Nerd for me ;)

Given that I usually wear black Levis and a polo shirt with some sort of Microsoft or other corporate logo on it, for me to buy shirts with nicer branding is a pretty big deal. :)

Not really... though two that spring to mind are £150 for a pair of Adidas and Bathing Ape Super Ape Stars, the other was a wool coat from Muji (of all places) for about £250 (hey I thought this no brand stuff was supposed to be cheap? heh).

Though usually I have a hawk like eye for a bargin. ;)

I will admit to spending a fair amount of cash before I got married and lived in Munich... Maximillianstrasse is just a label whores dream.

My sister loved me after she got a whole bunch of stuff from LV and Gucci, etc. Oh, how I wish I eBayed the lot.

I don't buy any clothing unless it's on clearance or at least 40% off the regular price. I do this for a few reasons:

1) I'm broke. Very, very close to having nothing left.
2) I don't like designer labels. The closest thing that I have that could've been expensive is a pair of Levi's...that I got for 6 dollars.
3) You get more for your buck.

I always considered my mac a fashion item - I try to carry it everywhere
- I don't care that much about normal clothing otherwise - as long as it fits together, looks decent enough and I don't smell - then I'm happy :o
I could blame student economy, but as my parents pay my clothing account (yay) I'm morally obliged not to, I suppose I'm just not very much into clothing atm, what happens in the future is not part of this interesting thread, I suppose.

$1000 for a pair of boots may be a bit too much, tho I happily paid $450 for shoes. When i got married I bought 2 shirts (I didn't know which one I wanted to wear) that cost each 95 bucks on sale. My jacket didn't cost that much. $18 jeans and a cheap golf shirt most of the time for me. I'm a little too fat for spending money on clothes right now...:o

I'm the same exact way, I never buy at full price, unless it's something I really really want or need. And even then I have a limit on how much I'd spend on something. My most expensive items are probably the knee high boots I bought last winter they were around $60 after discounts, and a vintage peacoat I bought 2 years ago which was $75 after discounts. :D

As for me, watches are dangerous. Luckily I've kept it in check and never bought off the internet. That would be bad...

I agree, unless the craftsmanship is apparent. Lacoste comes to mind (the name always makes me laugh, too). Some of their polos look way overpriced.

I know some golf buddies of mine that spend hundreds on a driver or putter. I guess it all depends on what is important to each of us.

Can't splurge much as a college student, but now and then I treat myself to something nice when I have money left over from the paycheck. Not sure if these are fashion items, but I got a pair of nunchucks, handcuffs, and a machete. I use the nunchucks to mess with my roommate, and the handcuffs to look like a real harcore police officer when I'm on duty doing traffic tickets. The machete is potentially for fashionably slicing watermelons. Otherwise, most of my purchases are 'need purchases'.

I tend to buy a few, expensive things rather than a ton of cheap things. So basically, I've got nothing.

hmm I spent $500 on a pair of custom fitted, high heeled dance shoes, I have been using them for 9 years now and they still feel and look pristine. So I guess they were worth it.

also my $150 Chaco sandals... seem overpirced till you realize I have had the same pair for three years and only after this summer so they need resoling.

I would not pay 100's of dollar for a piece of everyday clothing like a t-shirt or jeans, but for special classic items like a good coat/leather jacket or evening wear sure.

I do spend a fair amount on shoes though, maybe because footwear is so important...

Guilty.

I have a Prada suit - and it was worth every penny. It fits absolutely perfectly, and is still gorgeous after three years.

Also in my little Prada collection - two pairs of shoes, a belt, a few shirts, a tie, a messenger bag, an overnight bag, and a hanging bag for my suits. I got the messenger bag in 1999, and the thing has been put through the ringer. The quality is just amazing - the thing still looks brand new.

My favorite ties are Charvet.

I have a Rolex Daytona - but it was an inheritance. My other watch is Breitling.

I'm not broke, but I think buying a shirt because someone's name is on it is a complete waste of time, and completely absurd and pointless. If the quality is higher and it looks great, I'd be interested if the price was still acceptable. If I found a Prada shirt of equal quality, but the price was 3x more than the other shirt that was just as nice, of course I'd buy the shirt that was cheaper (in price only). How does it make any sense to do otherwise?
