If you PM liketom the email address you signed up to Nike with, you're good to go.

I made a little pouch out of elastic and an old t-shirt to hold the sensor (I wrapped it in plastic first) like so:

60081

and modified a wristband I had with some vinyl like so (after seeing these (http://www.imojo.com/nano.html)):

60082

It seems to do the trick. The shoe pouch looks great, but I think the sweatband would be better off black (I had the insane stripy one kicking around already). If I do well in the challenge, maybe I'll treat myself to a black one. ;) If anyone would like instructions, I'd happily draw some out. :) Also, Flowbee (who posted earlier in the thread) has some great suggestions on his site which is linked in his signature.

You can also get this thing for $4 (http://podophile.com/2006/10/16/another-cheap-nike-ipod-shoe-pouch-option-case-logic-usb-shuttle/) or this thing for $8 (http://podophile.com/2006/07/30/nike-running-shoe-wallet-with-the-nike_ipod-sport-kit/) or do this for practically nothing (http://podophile.com/2006/07/14/shoe-hacker-nikeipod-sport-kit-shoe-mod/). Thanks Flowbee and Lau for the options. And Flowbee, thanks for the link to the running tips. I stay in pretty good shape cycling over 100 miles a week, and stay very hydrated, but every time I start running distances (more than a mile or two), I get shin splints pretty bad. I think I will start slow this time and follow your chart...we'll see what happens. Count me in at the bottom of the bunch as well.

I think, after a little research, I have to have a run or two registered before I can accept the challenge. I have tried to accept, but I can't even view it (and I didn't see and accept option on the email). I'll try again tonight after I sync my first run.

About the cycling, don't let it fool you, it's really not that much considering professional cyclists ride that much in the mountains daily. Ha. My route is flat and easy. Hopefully this running thing will be a good supplement to biking...I usually gain about 30 lbs. every winter because I can't ride my bike (dark before and after work). I'd like to break that weight fluxuation trend, and this will be some good motivation.

if you pop your pod to workout basic and just run or walk around the room it will register as a run - then sync to your Mac it will upload the data to the nike website and your off :)

I've wanted to get into running.. tried it for a week or so and then pooped out. Maybe this would be a good motiviation, to see what others are doing at the same time.

What headphones do you guys use when running? Last time I tried, they kept falling out (was using some Sony ear buds). Also, do you guys run indoors or outdoors?

There are earbuds designed for running. It's usually earbuds with a hook that wraps around your ears, and a wire clip you attach to your shirt so the wires don't pull down on your earbuds. Makes a big difference.

The Sennheiser PX-100s (http://podophile.com/2006/07/20/the-best-headphones-for-running/) are still my favorite. I've never liked having anything in my ear or clipped onto my ear when running.

I may join you guys next time around when I'm more comfortable with running. I do enjoy going out, especially on trails, but running has been way harder for me than riding my bike.
Here is my gear list:
8GB 2nd Gen iPod Nano
Nike+ Sensor (obviously)
Nike+ Armband: Very comfortable. I wish there was a cutout for the screen though.
Marware Sportsuit: Great way to get around using the Nike+ shoes.
New Balance M872 Yellow: Amazing shoe, very light and comfortable. I love the curled laces that help keep the shoes from loosening. This are trail shoes though so if you stick to the pavement look elsewhere. These shoes have a nice toe guard and I've yet to have anything foreign (like pebbles) enter the shoe.

It's too bad I didn't have the Nike+ sensor when I first started running a month ago! I've only used it once so far but it's a great product.

This is sort of off topic but is the Nike running kit only good for running miles or will it still register if you go on, say an elyptical machine or a stationary bike.

No, it won't give you an accurate distance reading when you're on an elliptical machine or bicycle. It works very well for walking, however, so you don't need to be a 'runner' use the Sport Kit or join a challenge.

Sorry to dash your hopes, but the Shuffle doesn't have a standard iPod dock connector... so you won't be able to attach the Sport Kit 'receiver' to the Shuffle. :(

Shin splints can be avoided by making sure you have proper running shoes and starting out easy with a run/walk program. You need to gradually acclimate your bones and joints to the impact of running. When I started out, I would run 2 minutes and walk 4 minutes, repeated 4 more times for a total of 10 running minutes over the course of a half hour. If it sounds too easy, well... that's the point. Each week I would increase my running minutes and decrease my walking minutes. by the end of seven weeks I was able to comfortably run 30 minutes 4 times per week. I was 38 years old when I started running.

See the "5 Tips" link in my signature for more info.

It is devilishly hard to begin with, but it does get easier. You are doing the right thing by cross training, as it takes your joints and muscles a while to get used to the heavy impact of running.

On sunday, I managed to run 5km for the first time in the pouring rain, and actually felt like I could keep on going. Until then I had been suffering at 3.5km. Did another 5km last night to prove to myself it wasn't a one off!

Hope you have a good run tomorrow.

I'm with you, I have biked twice this week at 30miles a piece, but I can only run/walk 2 miles, and I have no pace, it is so much different than cycling. I have a much greater respect for triatheletes and runners. What gives????

I am still doing the run/walk every other day, from Flowbee's suggestions in his sig. So next week I can hopefully increase my mileage. No shin splints so far!

I am on the third day of week 1. I don't really have a problem with getting through the run/walk, it is the shin splints I can't ever seem to get over.

With Flowbees recs, I have not yet incurred pain in my shins. On Friday, I will complete week 1, and on Sunday, I will start week 2. I'm sure it will be harder to run 5 minutes at a time then than it is to run 2 minutes now. I'd guess I had better get out there before I turn on the TV.

Have you tried it yet, you should give it a shot!

Edit: I should add that I do 10 minutes of walking to warm up, and 10 minutes at the end to cool down, thus completing the 30 minutes.

Edit: I should add that I do 10 minutes of walking to warm up, and 10 minutes at the end to cool down, thus completing the 30 minutes.

Congratulations on getting started with the Flowbee Program(tm), but I'm not quite sure I understand that last bit. The "Week 1" suggestion I make on my site is to do the following workout on Mon, Wed, Fri, and Sat...

Start
Run 2 minutes
Walk 4 minutes
Run 2 minutes
Walk 4 minutes
Run 2 minutes
Walk 4 minutes
Run 2 minutes
Walk 4 minutes
Run 2 minutes
Walk 4 minutes
End

Total workout = 30 minutes
Total running time = 10 minutes

You shouldn't need to add 10 minutes of walking at the beginning and end to get to 30 total.

The week 2 plan is...

Start
Run 5 minutes
Walk 5 minutes
Run 5 minutes
Walk 5 minutes
Run 5 minutes
Walk 5 minutes
End

Total workout = 30 minutes
Total running time = 15 minutes

Let me know if the instructions on my site aren't clear... I may need to rewrite them a bit. Anyway, it's good to hear that you're running without shin splints!

i started flowbee's plan this week too (just moved, so getting into the new discipline with a fresh start). it's been easy for me, as i'm already fairly active (play in 2 soccer leagues, etc), but i want to do it the slow/gradual way to make sure the routine sticks even as it gets harder.

for shin splints, depending on whether it's the bones or the muscles... make sure you stretch your calves, but also do reverse calf stretches, which will help keep the muscles in the front side of your lower legs from getting too sore. the muscles in front and back work together, and your calves are potentially getting more workout via the run/walking so the other ones can't keep up... or something like that. the nice thing is you can stretch em while you sit. rest your feet on the ground flat, and then raise your toes up, while keeping your heel on the ground. do it 10-20 times a few sets worth and it may very well help... i'd also suggest doing this, even if your shins aren't hurting (yet) to potentially avoid that problem in the future!

we'll have to start a new challenge if/when i get set up with the pod/sport kit... i don't want to be 50 miles behind from the start!

Yeah, I need to get new headphones and I'll be back on track (I'm Belmore, by the way, how do you all do?). I meant to run yesterday and didn't get a chance, and I doubt I'll have time tonight. Here's to hoping for Friday!

So I went ahead and made some minor rewrites to the Flowbee Program (http://podophile.com/2006/07/17/5-essential-tips-for-new-runners/) for new runners. Hopefully, it's a little clearer. I also caught a typo in Week 3 (run 10 minutes, walk 5)... I had written "repeat two times", but it should have been "repeat one time."

Well, I didn't end up going yesterday, so I am stuck at 3.67 miles. I will make up for it today. You guys are killing me! Thanks for the stretch advice, and from Flowbees earlier comment, I actually walk 10 minutes before I start the program, just to make sure I am warmed up, so to correct my earlier post, I walk before and after actually doing the workout, although I will probably cut this out as the running gets more intense, i.e. next week (week2).

Edit: Well, I am back, and I added another 1.67 to the mix, and low and behold, I am still WAY behind. I think Lau, Liketom and I should form our own support group. Pic below.

They said they were upgrading their servers last night or something...I may not be a tech guy or anything, but I do know a thing or two about computers (as well as customer service) and it all seemed very poorly implemented.

But rant about Nike's failures as a tech company aside, the information all came back up today (apparently around 3 EST). So go check again, you should be good to go!

(And on a related note...the problem wasn't that the data was gone, just that the end user couldn't see it...my data never left the MacRumors challenge, but when I logged in it said I was a new user.)

Maybe liketom is running about 10 miles a day, but waiting to sync his ipod until the end of the challenge, to which he will rise to the top!

Below are the standings...I didn't have time to put the pics together this time, so they are in three different pictures.

Congrats on getting to the second week. You're absolutely right to not be focusing on the physical challenge yet. It's all about conditioning for the first 6 weeks. There's plenty of time for challenge later on.

The jump to 10 minutes was a big one for me. I remember being totally wiped out the first time I ran it. Surprisingly, I was able to get through second 10 minutes after the 5 minute walk. Now I can run 10 minutes without breaking a sweat (which comes in quite handy sometimes when trying to catch a bus). It's amazing what a little conditioning can do. :)

well, in fairness (and as i've mentioned before), i'm not exactly starting from scratch. i'd occasionally run 2-4 miles in the past, and play indoor soccer twice a week... but with your schedule i wanted a fresh start, to ramp up gradually and get into a routine that wasn't overbearing and that i could sustain. i ended up only doing 2 of the first week's routine because of a crazy few days, but am looking forward to sticking through it and building conditioning, breathing, etc...

and yeah, there's definitely something to be said for the first bit of running being toughest. i always found mile 1 to be much harder than 2 or 3...

Great start! Keep it up!

I took a look at how the nike+ stores run data on the nano.
It turns out to be a bunch of XML files. Short story is that it seems like
it would be fairly easy to create software that could provide many more
capabilities than the nike site does. In fact, I'd be surprised if such software
doesn't already exist.

Ah, very cool. If you can give me the start of where the files are stored I can start in on something. (I'm a web and db developer, so it'll be another online application, but at least another option, and a basis for an offline one down the road).

Thanks for the encouragement, btw! :D

Ah, very cool. If you can give me the start of where the files are stored I can start in on something.

On my Mac, I can find the pertinent files in two directories:

/volumes/t1937r0's nano/iPod_Control/Device/Trainer/Workouts/Empeds/4H635BD5VSX/latest

and

/volumes/t1937r0's nano/iPod_Control/Device/Trainer/Workouts/Empeds/4H635BD5VSX/synched

The "t1937r0's nano" part is obviously my nano's name.
The 4H635BD5VSX part seems to be some type of unique identifier for the
nike+ sensor.

Hope that helps...

I am looking into getting my wife a nano for Christmas so that we can both start getting back into shape after our baby is born. If we both have our own sensor can we both use the same nano? I would assume that it would work. Since we won't be able to run/walk together for awhile since we live in Michigan and we can't take our little ones out in the cold I assume we could get by just sharing a nano until spring if as long as we have our own sensors.

Just wondering what sort of pace people are doing, mine for that run was 8'33" which I am looking to improve.Mine varies between about 8:00 and 8:30, depending on how I'm feeling, the distance, and the course. For the 47 miles on my Nike+ account for the past 8 weeks I've average 8:17 miles.

Not too great, but I haven't really focused on improving my speed.

Doesn't seem to be hurting your distance, however, which is what's tracked here. I wouldn't worry too much about your pace - run what's comfortable and don't get hurt. As you rack up mileage, you might start seeing an increase in pace as you become more acclimated to the process.

As for me, it seems that no matter what distance I run, I'm always in that same range of times. I pretty much just have one speed, which always makes me laugh when I'm reading a running article and they say something like "run 1 mile at 90% of race pace." Race pace and practice pace for me are the same. :o

Yeah I need to focus on distance next, especially for this challenge.

Using one of the Nike+ albums from iTunes I have been doing the "Improve you Endunance" and it's been working really well for me! So that focuses on changing pace, which I didn't think I could do until this. Next is to now try and even paced run and see if it truely has improved my endurance!

I don't want to boast too much, but yes, speed more than distance, and a few of my runs are competitions when I don't want to have the Nike+ kit on me while I run.

I know I'll sound bizarre saying this, but I think eminem is some great music to run to. A lot of his songs have that whole "overcome" feeling and a good beat for pacing.

have you all calibrated it? reason i ask is my pace is average 6'50", and i'm not sure thats right if you're all 8'+. I'm also not using nike+ shoes so this makes me wonder if it's innacurate. I don't want to cheat!! :o

Do you run fast or slow? Do you measure in km or miles? When I run my pace is usually around 6, but that is km and I run slowly.

Well, it's not unreasonable if you're a fast runner. You still run slower than XIII if 6'50'' is for runs that are three miles or less.

Calibrating (http://podophile.com/2006/08/15/want-better-accuracy-from-your-nike-ipod-sport-kit-calibrate/) is always a good idea.

But it's sounds like you're getting pretty accurate results. Usually, if there's a problem with the way the sensor is attached to a non-nike shoe, the results are wildly inaccurate. Just make sure that, which ever way you've attached the sensor to your shoe, it's tightly secured and isn't to move around. If the sensor can slide or bounce around (even a little) while you're running, you'll get inaccurate results.

Anyone have any good recommendations for workout music?

Well I have 3 different running playlists depending on what I aiming for:

Under 4 miles - The Fratellis Album Costello Music is great for quick pace

Training - I brought the "Improve you Endurance" Nike+ Album with a coach which I think is awesome.... a real motivation.

Over 4 miles - The LCD Nike+ Album which is great for getting you in the zone at a good steady pace that you can maintain.

I think these Nike+ Albums are very good, the fact that you get the continous track for running and then individual tracks for normal listening makes the £7.99 price good value.

Just posted my first run! 3.73 miles.... not quite bottom of those that posted! Maybe I should have put the nike+ kit in my soccer boots this weekend!

Just wondering what sort of pace people are doing, mine for that run was 8'33" which I am looking to improve.

Ha, I've been wondering about soccer. Was almost going to pop the gizmo in my boots last wednesday kick-around, out of curiosity to see how far I run in a game. Distance lost to the challenge but decided I should protect the nano... If you do it, share the graph. My average pace seems to be about 7.20 / mile.

I'm not running much lately; I ran long for the last time on Nov 5th, for the NY marathon. Now, I'm trying to get my gf to run constantly (she is REALLY lazy) so I've barely ran 12 kms in the last 10 days at a very low pace.

Still, is there room for one more or are the spots filled? I probably wont be able to compete :) , but i would love to be part of the running brotherhood of MR.

Even though I'm not a "challenge" kind of guy, I've been thinking of ramping up from 3 miles per day to 4. twoodcc - What kind of pace do you run at (minute/mile)?

usually i run around 7:00 a mile on average. sometimes faster. sometimes slower. it usually depends on if i'm running by myself or with someone else. When i run with my girlfriend, it's slower. when i run by myself, it's faster

it also depends on how far i'm running, clearly it's easier to run faster for a shorter run.

but i also do some walking, so that hurts my overall average pace.

Thanks to the original MR running club thread I decided to try the beginner's program from runnersworld magazine, and am now working up to the 30 minutes continuous run mark. 29... and I just started running again after a two year break. I used to run half marathons without much fanfare during normal exercise. Well, I did get similarly drained for the next couple of days.

Oh, and in case you wonder. My running pace is and has always been very slow. Around 10 mins per mile, and since I just started running again I walk a bit every 5 minutes because my legs hurt and walking helps to give them some variation, so my average pace when running is around 11:30 mins per mile. The slow pace lets me go on for several hours.

a little of both. i was on a hunting trip this weekend. i just got back. i couldn't really run anywhere (without getting shot), but i'll be back at it tomorrow.

I thought that was me but looks like I am your next target at 6th, I've had 5 days off due to over doing it by running and playing a full soccer game in one day! Too much for me!

So I'm going to go out tonight and see if I can put some clear miles between myself and rickvanr .....AND have a go at hitting the top 5 so MRemw is my target!

Garr.. I'm still a couple miles behind 7th. This would be so much easier if he'd just stopped running :p

Top five would be a super finish, and you're so close. Half a k according to the widget.

I think I'll aim for 6th by the end of this. Even if I don't move up a couple more spots, I'm still pretty pleased with myself.

AARRRGH! USA WHY CAN'T YOU GET WITH THE PROGRAM AND START USING THE STANDARD UNITS OF MEASUREMENT???

Sorry, about the outburst. :o I have a question. When the heck is 12:59 AM in normal sensible 24 hours time? That's when it says the challenge ends for me.

Where does everyone run? I used to run in the summer, but now it's cold and crappy outside, it makes me want to stay in. I don't go to the gym, and probably never would. I really need to start getting active again.

Until around the start of October I ran outside, now that it's getting chilly I just run on the treadmill at home. It's not so bad.

Thanks a lot. I could've handled 3AM, but when 0 o'clock doesn't exist and 12 o'clock does, I get confused.

I run on asphalt mostly, and it's hilly for the first 15 minutes of my runs, but then it gets better.

Good :) You're sensible. This time I was aarghing about the 12 hours clock, but I'm also frustrated by all the conversion that has to be done in this thread to discuss distance and pace.

Getting me interested in thi, but had a question - Rain. Does the equipment work in the rain? I do not think it would be wise to take the nano out for a spin in therain - are the sensors waterproof, armbands as well? Just want to know the limitations before I purchase...

Thanks.

I'm in Norway, and right now it's sleet and rain outside, and the roads are mostly slush, so running doesn't seem very appealing. :)

I've been running in rain with the Nike iPod armband. It seems to protect the iPod fairly well against the rain. Sometimes it's a bit damp in a small area where the opening is when I come back after a run, but so far no problems. I don't know if the sensor is waterproof, but I haven't had any problems with it. I have Nike shoes, though, so the sensor is in the sole and hasn't really become wet at any time. If you plan to attach the sensor to the shoe using some other method it may be different.

.. so today I had a stellar run. Would have launched me into 7th. I didn't end the workout before plugging in my iPod, I only paused it. iTunes recognized the run, but the Nike website won't update it. Anyone know how to force the two to sync themselves?

Same here, however I'm a bit miffed my last two runs were not counted when I plugged in my iPod. I'll never see those 11k again.

Perhaps if no one takes charge I'll start a 'Get Fit For Valentine's Day' competition.

Edit::

Congratulations twoodcc on winning the challenge :)

After a dismal attempt at participation in this challenge, I'd be up for the Valentine's one as well...w/much more motivation...lol. :)

I'm up for one but it's been a few weeks I think since I asked to be added and still no go. I'd take offense but it's my new year's resolution to stop worrying so much! For now I run alone :(

Alright, so I guess I'll start up a Valentine's Day Challenge.

However, since I'm most likely going to be super lazy for the next week I'm going to wait until 1 January 2007.

Hehe, was just going to look into setting it up myself. I concur w/the waiting for the start date to be 1st January...that way we'll all have those shiny new resolutions to keep...and the hangover to get rid of by running

The Nike+ website is doing a New Year's Resolution (http://podophile.com/2006/12/26/nike-ipod-new-years-resolutions/) challenge for January. Pick a goal, and then decide what the consequences will be if you don't achieve that goal. Nikeplus.com keeps track of your progress starting January 1st.

I'm glad to have you back liketom and glad to hear that you're clear of the illness. I was wondering and getting a bit worried since you weren't around to invite people to the challenge.

Congratulations twoodcc, on winning the challenge! Christmas happened here so it was difficult to find time to run, but my legs also needed the time to recover so it's all for the better I think.

I'd be up for a January challenge. Does that collide with Valentine? I don't know when that is. Now that you're back it'll be easier if you just keep inviting people since you already have all the usernames.
