Just caught this on the Glasgow Herald website http://www.theherald.co.uk/news/73416.html

Apple to launch big Mac attack

GERRY BRAIDEN November 01 2006

ITS products inspire the same devotion as a teenage boy band or hometown football club.

Next year, when the first Apple Store opens in Scotland, queues of the converted determined to display their loyalty are as sure as spam fills your inbox.

The IT giant, which revolutionised both home computing and how we listen to music with the iMac and iPod, has earmarked Glasgow city centre as the location for its first venture north of the border.

Scheduled to open next summer, the company is spending over £1.15m converting a listed property on Buchanan Street into the formatted store that has proven a hit with Apple aficionados in the US, Canada, Japan and England.

Described as more interactive galleries- come-museums than shops, Apple Stores have been designed to look and feel like its products, while the company also encourages a "touch, test and try" policy so visitors can "appreciate the elegance" of the merchandise.

The planning application for the site, currently occupied by home-furnishing retailer The Pier, shows Apple's intentions to redesign the store.
Included in the plans are a new stone floor, stainless steel walls and ceilings and a glass spiral staircase and elevator.

For those with questions or queries, there is the "genius bar", a kind of drop-in clinic staffed by Apple technicians who will help customers who have made appointments.

The cost of alterations to the current building is estimated at £1.168m. But, unlike many other Apple outlets, including the UK's flagship store on London's Regent Street, there are no plans for an in-house theatre to offer customers the chance to learn about new products and techniques.

When it opens the store will be Apple's 8th in the UK. The decision to locate its only store north of the border in the heart of Glasgow is being seen as a further endorsement of Buchanan Street as one of Britain's leading retail sites.
Last night, as news of the plans emerged, keyboards went into overdrive as the Mac User Groups became excited about the prospect of a Scots Apple Store.

Fraser Speirs, former academic and software designer, is one devotee planning to take his duvet to Buchanan Street on the eve of the opening.
Mr Speirs, whose Connected Flow firm specialises in Apple software, said: "Apple fans really are a devoted and loyal bunch. We love the design of the hardware and the superior software. There's no doubt the iPod has brought it to a much bigger audience but that's only a small part of the story.
"There had been talk for some time that this might happen and those on the west coast will be delighted Glasgow has secured it and not Edinburgh.
"I've been to many stores around the world, including Regent Street and San Francisco, and they put in a lot of effort. I for one will be queuing the night before and I promise I won't be alone."

Lesley Sawers, Glasgow Chamber of Commerce chief executive, said it was "quite a coup" for the city to land such a popular brand.
She added: "It also illustrates Glasgow's continually growing attraction as a city centre retail location for big name companies."
Glasgow City Council confirmed it received a planning application in mid-October.

Looking forward to this now I can get my fix when I get home to see the AP's and increases the chance that they will go mac and cut down on the IT support calls I get today.

John:)

I live only a 5 minute walk away from their Glasgow branch but I would rather buy direct online from apple.

I was in their "refurbished" store at the weekend and they are still selling MBP CD.

I really wanted to tell any customers that they could buy a MBP C2D online but the shop was empty.

I hope somebody from Scotsys reads this. You suck!

This page (http://www.apple.com/jobs/uk/store/) always lists the vacancies at UK Apple Stores, either open or announced.

Bookmark it and keep checking if there's nothing suitable this week. Best of luck :)

From an Englishman abroad (Edinburgh), I believe this comes from a Glasgwegian method of illustrating the difference between Glasgow and Edinburgh.

If you visit a Glaswegian at home, the first thing they will say is something like 'you'll have your tea', meaning they will supply you will some form of sustinance (deep-fried mars bar, snowball, tunnocks teacake, buckfast wine etc). If you visit someone in Edinburgh, you will be greeted with 'you'll have had your tea', suggesting that the visitor has already eaten, and will not be requiring anything from their host.

It implies that people from Glasgow are friendly, whilst people from Edinburgh display a Lauder-esque meanness when it comes to sharing their trans-fats based victuals.

Ok, thanks! I understand now.

I've heard of these deep-fried Mars bars. I wonder what they taste like, while at the same time I can literally feel my arteries clog up just thinking about of them. Kind of like being fascinated and revolted at the same time.

Deep-fried pizza, on the other hand, is just fascinating. :D

Interviews for jobs have already taken place - I would imagine you'd be too late for the initial batch now but I'm not entirely sure who you could contact to find out :) As far as I know it's slated for a late August/early September opening.

(Photos are from May, but gives an idea of the space as it was set up previously)

Fellow Glaswegians!

Over the past 3 month's when I've been coming back from Aberdeen seeing my girlfriend, I walk down Buchanan Street and I see the new Apple Store's doors open and I can see work being done at around 9 at night. It makes me want to go in and see what's happening!

Does anyone have any clues to when it's opening?

The only thing I see on the Apple UK site is that they are looking for jobs.

I'm getting quite impatient. Shed some light please?

Scotsys is an ace place (it was where I got my MacBook Pro) but I wanna go in a real Apple Store!

It isn't open yet, but is definitely being fitted out. There should be an announcement form Apple in the next day or two if it is going to be a July opening.

I posted this earlier. Obviously they are behind schedule. :)

was talking to a guy who was working there and he said there working non-stop to have it ready.
I work in Queen Street train station so it's a minute walk.
do they have special promotions on for opening day? The first 1500 in are getting an apple t-shirt and there giveaways of a mac book and stuff like that.
I know there's always a big crowd for store openings but not sure about Glasgow don't want to turn up to early.

I don't think you'll have 1500 by 9am but you never know.

When Regent St opened, it was highly amusing to those of us at the front of the queue to watch the looks of astonishment and horror when people started getting out of cabs around 6.30am obviously assuming they'd be early - only to find that there were already 2000 people ahead of them :p

Whilst am so glad this store is now finally opening, have to be honest - queuing up for a free T is a little bit too fanboyist imho. 2000 people queued for Regent Street largely down to the goodie bag.

You can enter the prize draw any time up until the 27th.

Yes, I am definitely going to the Store on saturday, but getting out of bed early in the morning just to get a free T; not for me.

Interesting thoughts... lacking in any real substance of course.
Apple make decisions to locate based on sound commercial information.

Why not have a quick look at this Scotsman article http://thescotsman.scotsman.com/index.cfm?id=986122002

Details of the political decisions made in Edinburgh from the mid 50's to the early 2000's to destroy Glasgow... morons like you should keep your gobs shut.

Edinburgh is full of 'toffs', i.e. people who want to be posh, but who the posh people can't stand.

Glasgow was the perfect choice. Glasgow should also be made the capital, but thats besides the point.

Yeah, but those are the only 3 good things in Glasgow and possibly the whole of Scotland...

Joke, of course, pinch of salt maybe...

;) :p

I don't think it's a question of people being touchy, or being easily offended, or not understanding the basic ellements of humour. I think it's more to do with your astounding lack of self awareness.

If your intention is to offend then you are effective. More importantly why do you want to offend? Are you in some way innaderquate?

Apparently so.

Edinburgh is the capital because of its history. Also offers a much vaster range of tourism icons. Edinburgh does have a lot of 'toffs' - but most aren't even from Edinburgh in the first place.

John Lewis in Edinburgh was Scotland's biggest seller of Apple products in 2006 (our department got given a box of Apple Yo-Yo's as a thanks, talk about lame...). There is also a John Lewis in Glasgow, so beat them.

But to balance out the argument, I have been to Glasgow on numerous trips to shop - simply better value for money and a wider range within the city centre.

Still, an Apple Store in Edinburgh is on its way eventually. I'll just have to dodge the neds as I walk from Buchanan bus station to the Apple Store.

Just a bit friendly banter, no hard feelings ;)

Nah, my facts were right. I put an * beside population because about 1/3 of Glasgow is neds. I wouldn't be too fussed in counting them as useful living people, unless smashing windies and heroine is up your street.

Since Glasgow has over twice the population of Edinburgh then even if you remove the 1/3 neds then Glasgow's still bigger...

Hard to tell I know, but do you think the free Apple wifi (presume this store will be no different to others) will reach across to starbucks???

The appeal of getting up early and queing does not appeal, but if I can sit over in starbucks hooking into the wifi and keeping an eye on the queue is not too onerous.

You'll probably find that the folk in the queue are pished off their nuts and think it is a queue for the bus home or something.

Drunk folk will quite happily queue and talk!

I've had an iPhone for a couple of weeks now (I'm from Glasgow) and was going to go over and show it off at the store but when I heard the queue was already forming yesterday it put me off going. I'll probably pop along and check out the new store later in the week when it's quieter.

plugged mine in then did a software update, that's when it did the keyboard update. after a restart the F2 and F3 worked fine.
Disappointed my USB flash drive still doesn't have enough power from keyboard, and that F7 - F8 don't control eyeTV, have only tried it with iTunes and eyeTV though.
Apart from that I like it, quite easy to type on.

Least it's not a dreich night for the half dozen mad ones!

Yup, the WiFi reaches Starbucks with a full four bars. I bought the 802.11N access from apple.com so that might have helped.

Must say I'm glad that there's a Genius Bar close to home incase my MacBook goes on fire again ...

First Apple Store I've been to - loved it.

Everything setup, and working. The staff are a bit clueless - but I guess they'll gain experience as time goes on.

The layout and neatness of the store is fantastic, everything clear and obvious. I spent about 10 minutes playing with Garage Band on a hooked up Midi Keyboard on one of the Mac Pro's!

First time I got to play with the new iMac and keyboard - they are unbeliabley sexy! I slatted them, but seeing and using it in person I've actually fallen in love with it. The keyboard is awesome too - I love it.

I found the store quite stuffy though, was sweating even in a t-shirt! Don't know if it was because of all the people packed in or if the air-con wasn't working properly.

Was at the launch this morning and got iLife & iWork 08, also the free t-shirt (to big for me, darn it!!). Plenty clapping and cheering lol!! Was pretty funny but was a great atmosphere.

The store is immense, cant wait to get back there next week to get a proper look around when the crowds die down!!

So jealous of the person who got a shot of the iPhone, was so so so so hoping that I might have had a chance at that!!! Anyway when its out in the UK we should get a meet on the forum for any of us MacR users. Seen a few people camping out last night to just get into the store, cannot imagine what its going to be like for the iPhone launch?!!?!

Hope anyone that was at the launch today had a great time and might bump into some of you again some point!!! (iPhone launch come on come on come on come on!!!!!)

Went to the store with a friend between 5:30 and 7:30pm and it was not too busy but very loud with everyone playing music everywhere! The staff were very friendly and helpful although we did get asked continuously if we needed help. Not a complaint as this is a very busy day for these guys and they were doing their best to help. :)

The glass staircase is a work of art - anyone any idea what it cost? My mate who is a builder reckons £100k!! Probably not far off!

I loved the whole atmosphere of the place - much more "alive" than the Regent Street store when I went there earlier this year. Probably just because it was Day 1 but nice all the same.

Glad I went up!
Cheers,
Craig.

literally? yikes.

Yeah; it was encoding some video, I'd left the room for 10 minutes, came back and it was really hot and I could smell sort-of-a melting plastic smell. I lifted it up to put it on top of something to increase the air flow and my hand brushed off the magsafe connector which was roasting - I pulled it out and there was a little flame and smoke and the cable melted. Fun. Nothing like the iBook flame outs but worrying. The new charger has a longer guard at the connector.

ensee, did you buy anything?

No, I'm about to become a poor student - I'll head in this week and get the new iLife. I can just about justify that. iWork might be more useful for uni but I was pretty happy with iLife when I tried it in-store, seemed better than what a lot of people said about it.

My Macbook feels strange now that the top case/keyboard has been replaced.

I have an appointment at the same time on Tuesday. My iBook power adapter isn't working correctly - I have to wiggle the cable around for the computerto charge.

A couple of months ago, my Superdrive stopped working. I sent it away and got it back a week later. However this Superdrive is faulty too. Do you think they'd be able to replace it as fast as yours. Do MacBooks and iBooks use the same spec of Superdrives?

I don't see why not...

I only have a combo drive that was replaced...i don't know much about the specs of the superdrives. Guess if they have all the stuff in stock that they can replace easily then it'll be done reasonably quickly..

There's a very large illuminated apple in the doorway of the building. It's just along from Urban Outfitters.

I walked past it the first time too - the Apple logo isn't very obvious and is hidden between the pillars of the building.

An Apple logo on the side and a billboard or something would make it more noticable.

How did your genius appointment go?

Hey!

Well, I arrived at the Apple Store thirty minutes before my appointment. They didn't look too busy so I asked a genius if it would be OK if I could be seen to right away.

He was on his computer for a while, but I got a new iBook power adapter (which stopped working last night) and I asked about my Superdrive. He said that all the repairs took place within the store and realistically it would take 2-3 days to fix the Superdrive. I said that I'd leave that for another time. Overall the experience was OK. The genius took a look at my power adapter and yanked the top off (the circular bit that plugs into the computer) it. In my opinion he almost tried to imply that I knew about this and that I stuck it back on! Where in actual fact I never new about it, and it just shows the connector bit was seriously loose! My friend (who recently had to get a new power adapter from Apple for his MacBook) said that they are of poor build quality and the genius said "they just don't break". Maybe I'm being overly sensitive but I almost feel like he didn't believe my story!

Overall it was an OK experience and I will be using their service again for convenience alone.

I'm not regretting taking out AppleCare. So far with this computer I've had a new battery (Apple Online) a new power adapter (Apple Store) and a new Superdrive (Scotsys).

I don't believe Scotsys fitted a brand new Superdrive, as some of the disks I've burned are immediately unreadable on my computer, and DVDs I copy stutter when played on DVD players! So hopefully when I'm back to Uni in September I will get a new one fitted.

I will have had my computer 2 years in January. The battery capacity is only at 66% (which is kind of depressing!). Do you think Apple would cover another battery?

Kilamite
Aug 28, 2007, 11:28 AM
Haven't tried the Genius Bar yet since I've not come across any problems (touch wood), but if something did happen I wouldn't get the Genius even come close to accusing me of breaking something if I hadn't.

Links are what matters sometimes in these situations - an old work friend transferred from a shop in Edinburgh to Glasgow. Only found out he had quit his job and got one at the Apple Store when I saw him on Saturday - I'm hoping that could provide a bit more generousity than what Joe Bloggs might get.

Batteries are consumables and aren't covered by the guarantee (unless the battery goes faulty within the first 4-6 months) - having 66% battery health after nearly 2 years isn't too bad!

I thought this was a site to discus Apple - as far as I know it isn't the place to drag out tired, offensive and pointless stereotypes - Try the BNP or perhaps just think before you open your gob.
