Saw it tonight and found it incredibly disturbing, and offensive...I laughed my head off. I had my doubts that they could take the funny commercials and make an entire movie but they did it.
So who's seen it and your thougts
PS. How crowded in your town took me three trys to finally get in.

Seen it twice over the weekend. I can't remember the last time the entire theater was packed and laugh our asses off!
Just wanted to point out, this only showed in 837 theaters in North America and hit number one, made over $26 Million! Anyone here have an idea what's the budget for it?

I have a friend who did marketing work for the pic so I'd heard about a few of the scenes ahead of time, and of course I've seen enough of Ali G to know what Borat's all about.
I think it may be one of those films where you have to go back and see it again to pick up on some of the stuff. Cohen works fast.
When I buy my wife, at the start her vagine work well and she strong on plow, but after three years when she was 15 ... her vagine hang like sleeve of wizard.

Best. Movie. Ever.

Sold out. We got in the 1st try because we bought tickets a few hours in advance.
The rodeo scene was hilarious, as was the naked wrestling at the hotel, as disturbing as that was.

I tried and got tickets out in some suburb and drove out there and found out that they were carding at the door the THEATRE. So I couldn't get in . ( I had fandango tickets which I picked up but I've got 5 months to go till I'm 17) This never happens in downtown Portland...Stupid suburbs...
I'm going to try again in downtown where the regal-cinema police aren't so vigilant. Or maybe I'll just go with my dad. I'm excited in any case.

I dont go to movies very often, but i went to see this one on opening night. My friend bought tickets about 2 hours early, and we waited in line for about 45 mins before it opened.
I thought it was very funny. Well worth the price of admission.

Not released in Japan yet - but will probably wait for the Amazon.com dvd release as I do not want to be the only person LMAO at the theater in Japan (which is usually the case when I go to comedies here as the translations just don't seem to get any laughs)
Also, with movie ticket prices around $25.00 it is cheaper to get the dvd sent over...

There we go, I was wondering when we'd get some controversy.
I personally think the character Borat is pure genius (aside from the antisemitism), and I'm going to see it tonight. The way Cohen interacts on the fly and manages to stay so deeply in character even in the most hilarious of times is very impressive.

the thing that bothers me about the movie is the marketing. He was on the Today show twice, and he didn't break character. I can see him being in character for Leno or lettermen etc, but not the today show. WHen he was on it was at 7ish, they should have moved him to the 9ish slot and saved that time for news. How can matt lauer interview something like this especially with what happened in the news this weekend about Saddam.
Aside from that it still looks like one of those dumb movies that you should see kinda like jackass, so i'll prob end up seeing it :D

I think for everyone walking into that movie there will be scenes that will cause you to laugh your ass off and others which will make you turn away or think "this is stupid."
I found most of his material to be good, but the scenes involving the nudity and other gross items made me turn away. I am not into the "potty humor."
The "running of the Jew" and bed & breakfast scenes made me laugh the hardest.

Errr...you *do* know that Sascha Baron Cohen is himself an observant Jew, right?
Right???
Jeepers, maybe the Jewish Anti-Defamation League was right in expressing concern that some people might actually take the anti-semitism at face value

good good stuff. my initial take was that it was "pretty funny"... and of course there were parts that were hilarious, and some that were just disturbing.... but now having recounted many of the scenes to various people who haven't seen it, i'm finding it's even funnier in hindsight. i'm sure i'll be seeing this again, on dvd at least... should be some hilarious extras too.

I saw it. best film I've ever seen, just because I laughed from pretty much start to finish. That's all I can say right now. It's also the only film I've seen that I could watch again. haha. Borat never ceases to amaze me, along with the Americans he targets  now Borat is an act but them guys? especially the guys in the motorhome. bloody hell. I hope I never see them in real life.
I just LOVE how he's everything we expect someone from that part of the world to act like. He's from Kazakhstan, yet he drops Polish in from time to time. Unless they have a similar language. It's excellent.

Borat is played by Sacha Baron Cohen, a comedian in the UK. He has his own tv show, Da Ali G Show, where he plays Ali G, a wannabe rapper. Cohen is Jewish, and he is actually very smart behind his ignorant facade.
Borat is one of the characters he plays in his show. His next movie will be him as Bruno, a gay reporter.

Borat was hilarious, but it seems to me that the people that find it the funniest seem to be jews, (myself and all of my jewish friends included) that are technically being descriminated against. The movie was fabulous and funny, but i didn't find it offensive because of the over-the-top-ness of it all. The Running of the Jews? Fabulous. Sexytime? Go for it. It just iritates me that some people really think Borat exists and isn't a character... and to them i just shake my head in shame :o

Too bad this hilarious comment (and probably the whole Borat character) will be overused by December like Ace Ventura impersonations were in '94 or "I'm Rick James, bitch!" was last year.

Havent seen it, but I know some of my friends from Kazahastan are really, really f***ing pissed at it.Apparently, no one over in that area of the world has any sort of sense of humor about anything. The movie's even been banned in Russia because it's insensitive to certain ethnicities and religions.
If anything, they should think it's funny (or disturbing, or both) about the things Americans will say when they think no one will ever know.

It's very funny, but those who are saying that it's the best movie ever and the only movie that can be watched again are fooling themselves.
It's definitely a must-see, whether that's in the theatres or renting it later. Very very funny. Just make sure you have a sense of humor and don't take everything too seriously.

Isn't that always how that is? Comedians always have the greatest right to make fun of their own kind... Dave Chappelle makes fun of blacks, Russell Peters makes fun of Indians, Sasha Cohen makes fun of Jews.
But it is too funny that people don't pick up on the joke. Like Cohen getting punched up by some guy in NYC this week?

Hmm. Saw a preview show on Comedy Central and was not impressed. I'm hardly a prude, but a little potty humor goes a long, long way. So I wasn't planning on seeing this.
My plans were sealed when I found out the movie was predicated on "Candid Camera" stuff. I've never been comfortable watching someone make a fool of someone else.

man i hate it when people complain that sacha baron cohen is anti-semetic. HE IS JEWISH! people cannot take a joke. the entire movie kept me laughing from beginning to end. i am going to see it again.
edit: i forgot, the rodeo scene was filmed about an hour away from where i go to school, and some hick ass people from that area came to the theater and waited for us outside with the local news rolling and asked what our reactions to the rodeo scene were. everyone was just like, "wow i can't believe how ignorant those people are!" then they started to defend themselves, "maybe they didn't understand exactly what borat was asking..." serves you effing right for being so ignorant, racist, and homophobic!

i found the movie hilarious and one of the best comedy movies i've seen in a while. Although I was bit unnerved to be one of the only people in a packed theatre laghing at the rodeo scene. I guess i get that from living in a southern hick area where everyone takes things to seriously.

oh god yes. I don't think it harms Kazakhstan at all. It's obvious the start is a set up (filmed in Romania, I believe) but the people in America? Especially them students in the motorhome, I think their opinions shocked me more than anything else in the film... they weren't acting after all!

Saw it a few weeks ago. It was okay. Not much funnier then what you would see on his HBO show. It had one or two laugh-out-loud moments but hardly worth all the hype going on.
I saw an afternoon show in a 1000+ seat theater and there were only 15 or so people viewing (NYC).
I will assume the energy of the large audience drives alot of the laughter.
Being drunk or stoned may also help but my opinion is to just wait for the dvd...

The entire POINT of the joke is that Borat has nothing to do with Kazakhstan. The joke is a) that Americans (and Brits) are dumb enough to believe that he is a Kazakh and that Kazakhs (or foreigners as a larger concept) behave the way he does and believe the things he does, and b) that by behaving this way he gets Americans (and Brits) to expose their own prejudices (usually against Jews and gay people).
Unfortunately, in the process of making a narative structure for the movie, the real joke (Americans and Brits are dumb) gets a little obscured. But still, that's the joke.
That said, I can't really blame Kazakhs for not getting the joke. How well would most of us react to the exact same thing in reverse?
