View Full Version : WAP/Mobile Forums Test

Hi guys,
I've installed a mobile/WAP version of the forums for those on mobile phones etc...
it can be accessed via: http://forums.macrumors.com/wap/
Also, all links from
http://mobile.macrumors.com/
http://wap.macrumors.com/
should link to the appropriate wap forum.
I've played with the software and in general, it seems ok. There are some issues with it. One issue I know is it seems hard to jump to the end of a thread.
Let me know what you think, unfortunately, it does not seem very customizable.

It's not working with Pocket IE on my phone, keeps on redirecting me to the regular version of the forums. I tried logging out and loging back on (both on my computer and my phone) but it didn't change.

YAY! This is exactly what I've been looking for ever since I got my 3g phone! I was stuck with mobile MR but non-mobile forums. Ahh my trainride in the morning just got better.

For now, it appears the best option if you want to catch up on a long thread is to hit the "Post Order: DESC" and read backward until you are caught up.
Another thing you can modify is from Home -> Preferences
You can change how many posts show up on a thread view. (default = 10 posts/page)

Looks like a strange issue with Pocket IE.
(Windows Mobile - SmartPhones, Windows Mobile - Pocket PCs)
Pocket Internet Explorer is not fully WML compliant (it does not include the appropriate WML accept header), it also does not render the true XHTML-MP pages outputted by WiForums. In order to insure WML compliancy we had to to develop a redistributable for Pocket IE users.
This version of WiForums contains redistributable applications entitled "WiForums Pocket IE Accept Header Modifier - MS SmartPhone Edition" (WiForums PIE AHM - SMARTPHONE.zip) & WiForums Pocket IE Accept Header Modifier - MS Pocket PC Edition" (WiForums PIE AHM - POCKETPC.zip).
Alternatively, Opera's Technical Preview browser for Windows Mobile SmartPhones can be downloaded at http://www.opera.com/download/mobile/?man=Windows+Mobile . This browser supports both the XHTML-MP and WML markup modes of WiForums Full Featured v3.
Here are the files if it's something you are interested in messing with.
I can't guarantee the functionality of these files, and you should use at your own risk.
PocketPC.zip (http://forums.macrumors.com/wap/redistributables/WiForums%20PIE%20AHM%20-%20POCKETPC.zip)

Seems to be working alright with my Blackberry 7130 and 4.1 version of the phone software. Thanks for setting this up Arn. :D

I keep getting "No response, try again" on my nokia 6061 w/ cingular. I have no problems viewing the main mobile page.
edit:
I just tried viewing the main page and my phone b0rked out. Stupid cingular. I'll ask them what's up before I ask for help here.

I've been trying it with one browser on my Samsung A900 and it seems okay so far. I'll try Opera Mini when I have the patience. It's being particularly difficult just trying to get the URL in there.

Thats odd, it seems to work just fine on mine. I'm running IE on Windows Mobile 5.0.

You should tell them to add that one to their count of "dropped calls".

I cannot login from my phone (RAZR) because neither my username/password begins with a capital letter, and it won't switch to lowercase. Stupid phone browser.
I have to login with Yyellow (and then delete the beginning Y) and the same for my password I guess.

I just can't get used to the whole 2=abc1, 3=def, I'm afraid I've never texted anyone and prefer the blackberry keyboard. If only I still had a BB, then I'd NEVER be away from MR! <shivers excitedly>

Awesome, connected right away, navigation was easy and it seemed pretty quick. I had a "please click if you're not redirected in 2 seconds" link a couple of times, which I *did* have to click, but that's not really a major issue.
It said the live news feed was unavailable, is that right?

Does Forum Spy work on people's phones? Just curious. Mine's too much of a pain to use for this kind of stuff or I'm just too old-skool. :o

I used spy before my Opera Mobile trial ran out awhile back. Worked fine and a lot easier to use since Opera had tabs.
Edit: How is everyone getting the little "wirelessly posted from" thingies?

There wasn't a link to the spy from the WiForums but you can still access "normal" MR forums from your phone; it's just slowed down by all the graphics etc. I clicked on forum spy and it loaded all the page apart from the posts.
What browser are you using on your phone? Try Opera mini (http://www.operamini.com/download/) :)

Hehe :D Well IIRC you have an Orange Sony Ericsson handset too... mine's really old and has its own built-in browser (under "Orange World") but that's crap to use. I'm not sure what the newer handsets come with. Just enter your phone number into that link I posted and it'll send you an Opera download link by SMS, literally takes a few seconds to install.
Not sure I'll use it very often but it's a nice new feature to play with and this wap version is definitely a lot faster than the regular forums via phone :)

Now I really can't wait until I get my Blackberry in a couple weeks.
And frankly, a Blackberry and a forum I frequent in a nice, WAP format is the LAST thing I need during class, but oh well :D
How did you do this anyways? I've seen a couple other vBs with the same thing, and I help administer a vB and I'd like to set this up.

The mobile forum is working swimmingly, although for me most of the forum links show up on one vertical line. Screen names, PM notifications and page * of (total). That could just be a symptom of a bad phone though :D

I think you only get the notification e-mails when you subscribe to a thread. It was just a coincidence that the one I used as an example, happened to be a notification of one of your posts.
