View Full Version : Stupidest Statements/Questions from Mac Users

There's a thread for stupid PC-user tricks, but not one (so far as I can find) that deals purely with the imbecilic comments of our Mac-using brethren.
And so, with that in mind, I wanted to start a thread devoted to all of these pearls of idiocy dripping from the mouths of our brothers and sisters, the Mac user community.
Here's one:
"iPod, anyone?" when referring to how an unsuccessful or just plain stupid business model could be magically successful, if only Apple would get involved. Examples: Sure, TiVO is hemorrhaging money... but remember the iPod? or Sure, tablet PCs have only narrowly outsold Christopher Lloyd inflatable sex dolls... but remember the iPod?

Erm, okay, I'll play. I think the two that irritate me the most are:
1) The dogged insistence that Apple produce various random crap products such as headless iMacs and that they are screwing up massively by not doing so, in spite of the abundant evidence in the form of Apple's financials that suggests that their current strategy is a good one. EDIT: And my dogged insistence, incidentally, that an Apple subcompact would be highly lucrative for them and give me multiple orgasms.
2) The whole "consumer" versus "professional" nonsense surrounding what is appropriate for Apple's products with metallic shells and their products with white plastic ones.
P.S.
Oh my God, this rocks:
I just threw up in iGary's mouth a little bit.

I think this is very fair... although my experience is that XP is crashier than Win2k is. Win2k is, aside from its clunkiness, a very nice OS in many ways....
I think people overestimate susceptibility to malware on Windows computers. Particularly the extent to which a Windows computer is relatively safe if one uses a firewall, Firefox, and no "naughty" apps.

This one tends to annoy me:
"OMG I hope Apple doesn't release a new version because I just bought one".
Oh, and:
"iTunes suxxes. Does MAC have anything like Winamp?"
There is a whole slew of this type from switchers.
How about I just bought my Mac in Dec. will i get ilife 07 for free.
Or I paid $79 for iwork is there an upgrade price for the next version?

Win2K is a very good and stable OS for those who know how to use PCs. It has minimal requirements to work well.
The problem with Win2K, that XP fixed quite a bit, is with drivers. WinXP is so easy to connect devices compared to Win2K.
"Have you repaired permissions?"

Mine is pretty scary. Not the girl, but the guys at the Apple reseller:
I was at my local reseller earlier this year when I overheared the following:
Girl: "My MacBook wonīt start. I bought it yesterday, and after I had been using it for 45 mins it shut off and wouldnīt start again."
The girl puts the MacBook on the counter, and the guy behind it pushes the power button. Nothing happens.
Guy: "We have to send it to Apple so they can have a look at it. It might be the battery."
This is the point I feel I just have to do something. I walk over to them, and ask if I can look at it. I ask for the powerbrick, plug it in, connects it to the MB, and turns it on, The MB starts. Itīs a miracle!
Me: "It usually will help if you charge up the battery."
Girl: "I thought you didnīt have to do that with Macīs. Only with PCīs."
P.S: Yes, it turned out to be the most simple solution, Charge it up, baby. The battery was allright, just needed some power.

"Apple should put a {Tuner|Blu-Ray|HD-DVD} player in the iTV."
(Yeah -- my pet peeve right now is the iTV controversy; everyone assumes that the iTV is going to be a far more incredible device at $300 than the Airport Express base station is at $140 for their respective forms of data)
"Apple should put the Linux kernel in OS X."
"Leopard should run Windows apps completely transparently with no performance hit."
"$PRODUCT_X needs a video card capable of running $VIDEO_GAME_Y at $FPS fps."
No. It doesn't. As evidenced by the fact that it's selling in record numbers, and I'd buy twelve if I could afford them.
"Apple should love us! We're their biggest fans!"
Most Apple employees probably hate us passionately, and I understand and don't blame them one bit.
LOL. Sorry, person_who_shall_remain_unnamed, but this just had to be posted :)

First posted question:
i don't see why i'd spend 300US on this, seriously, what exactly does it do, most of my vidoes on my Mac are not great quality, why would i watch them on a TV?? i don't see the point in this iTV thing.
Insert various frustrated responses...
Second posted question:
i've looked but i'm asking a specific question...
"why would i want to stream my videos from Mac to TV because most videos you have on your Mac are not the greatest quality, so why would i spend 350Canadian on this thing...???" nobody has answered that yet.. all they've don was send me links with pics or rumours on what it does.
my response: ok now to be honest here you did not ask the question you have listed in your second post when you first posted, as you can see. so perhaps next time if you want the answer you are now looking for simply ask it so you don't get a thread link as an answer questions like your first one posed.
In response to your second question, the reason is because... here is the link so that you don't have a long set of points unrealted to this thread, i.e., a relatively smart post if I do say so myself. ;) http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=3202732#post3202732

well this is more of an MR complaint than mac users
"Is a mini/macbook powerful enough for my needs? I plan on surfing the web and using iTunes and iPhoto... maybe I should get a mac pro?"
It's not as bad as the iBook/Powerbook days, but people with the bare minimum of computer needs don't seem to understand that the low end models are there just for those uses and that "surfing the web" isn't nearly as processor/ram intense as they'd like to believe.

I've seen one like this too. back when I was doing IT Support work. This secretary calls in and her monitor is blank. Long story but in the end.... There is a little red button with a "1" and a "0" on it and it needs to be in the "1" position. Turned out she was used to powering up the system using the switch on a power strip and was not used to using the switches on the box or CRT.

From Mac users? Hmmm...
1. "My hard drive failed, Apple really needs to get a grip on quality control."
2. "When is the headless iMac / Xeon MacBook Pro / MacTablet /Apple PDA / iPhone coming out? Do you guys know???"
4. Anybody that spells MAC like it's an acronym for something (Marvelous Awesome Computer, perhaps).
6. Anybody that thinks the Intel Mac mini is a downgrade compared to the G4 mini.
7. "I installed this software that came with my digital camera and now everything is screwed up!"
9. "I downloaded the official AIM client but it keeps quitting unexpectedly."
12. "Safari doesn't work exactly like IE/FireFox/whatever on Windows. I thin I've wasted my money."

Although not specific to mac users, this one's been annoying me a lot recently. it is typical of the newbie on these forums.
When they post titles with excessive unnecessary question and exclamation marks at the end of very un-urgant and trivial questions.
For example
"Good time to buy macbook or wait?????"
or how about when the thread title gives absolutely NO description of what the thread is about.
For example
"Hey i need some help please help!!!!!!"
Those two are especially annoying right now.

Stupidest statment from Mac users? How about...
"The first 30 years were just the beginning... welcome to 2007"
"Redmond, start your photocopiers"
"Just one more sleepless night"
This is the number one thing that annoys me about Apple. They can sometimes seem so smug and up themselves and think the whole computing/music world revolves around them. And that attitude is showing more and more lately, in those tv ads and the last WWDC with all the Vista bashing. I want to like Apple but with that kind of attitude it just really puts me off them.

Those statements can seem kind of arrogant sometimes, but those were from Apple, not "Mac users." I think that stuff can be okay at something like WWDC, I mean, if you're a Mac developer, it's nice to have a little fun with the opposition. It's not like the main consumer audience is paying attention to WWDC. I know what you mean though, sometimes I think Apple pushes it too far.

The only people that actually care / complain about "how far" Apple is "pushing it" is people who actually care about their computers. So, what is that, like 2% of the world?
I think most of the general population either doesn't care at all, or finds the ads slightly funny, in a calm sort of way.
Really I think it's just people on Mac forums who recently bought their first Mac and don't want to admit they've wasted a good amount of their computing life on PCs. Nobody else takes it seriously. It's just advertising. And isn't that what all advertising is? One company saying their products are better than the other? What do you people expect, Apple to say "Yes, PCs are great, and we're just as great, and everything is great, so if you ever feel like it, try a Mac." Get off this nonsense...

Or when someone asks if they need more RAM and people give them answers without even bothering to consider their page-out status.
There should be a special place reserved in hell for everyone who recommends product specs to n00b buyers without making any consideration of their actual intended usage profile.

Eh, I already play for the Evil™ team, myself, anyway. ;)
Although... the mentality that the question, "what should I buy" need not be connected to the questions "what do I need" or "what do I want to do" is not a trivial piece of the problem you're referring to....

Here's my favorite one that I see on the forums a lot that makes me want to smack people:
How can I possibly setup this [Linksys/Netgear/Belkin/whatever] router with my Mac, the installation CD only works in Windoze!!?!??!??!?!?
I just want to get a big stick with http://192.168.1.1 written on it and beat them repeatedly over the head.
Or, here's another favorite:
Can I network a Windows computer and a Mac?
Obviously, the dumb network questions (which maybe aren't entirely dumb if you're a complete newbie but can definitely be answered on your own with about 5 seconds on Google) are my favorite. I've discovered two "arenas", if you will, of people who get way over their head in networking and it's funny/sad to see the things they try sometimes: people on Mac forums and people on Xbox hacking forums. I don't know what it is, but the network questions I see in those two types of communities typically top anything I see elsewhere.
EDIT: And how could I forget (although this has been touched on earlier, I think), my absolute FAVORITE threads are "When is XYZ coming out?" or "Will [totally speculative unannounced product] have option ABC and what will it cost?" As if all of this information is being secretly held by thousands of people, who are only going to post on the Internet about it when someone asks.

Meh, network noobs are "slightly" forgivable, provided they come to me and ask for help. Respectfully :)
Plus, the addy for a router isn't always the same. It's usually easier for them to change their settings to auto (to first ID the addy, if it isn't already labeled).

Oh I know, I was just generalizing. My point is, you NEVER need the CD to setup a router, and most instruction manuals actually mention that. If not, like I said a Google search should clear that up. If not, I am usually happy to help, and in truth my frustration with network threads like that is not the original poster but the other people trying to "help" by suggesting all sorts of weird things. I once came upon a thread where that was the question (how do I setup my router without a Windows PC), and there were already 15 replies and NOT ONE had just told the OP to configure the router through his browser. Seriously, the Xbox forums I used to visit were atrocious. I couldn't believe the crap people were spewing who *thought* they knew something about networking.

Probably already been posted. However:
"Bill Gates is t3h evil! Vista/any other piece of software copies OS X!!!"
Some truth in both statements, but Gates is the world's greatest philanthropist and has done amazing work in Africa. And Apple may be innovators but Vista was in development for 7 years and had planned many of the things Mac users complain about long before Tiger, MS just couldn't ship their product in time.

How about stupidest answers?
I personally hate when someone says "Why don't you just Google it???"
Sure, why don't we all just "google" everything, and never have any contact with other people. Because we should be afraid of asking questions, since all of them can be answered with a smart response like "google it why don't you, gosh how dare you post a question!!!"

True, I find it a little mean when somebody asking something relatively complex is told to google it.
But starting a thread asking how to get a CD out of a Mac? C'mon!

Dude, they're marketing slogans and they accomplish exactly what they're designed to...they get people talking.
Yes, Apple and many of its users are smug...for good reason.

Obsolete now, but I hated when Mac users smugly snooted out the term "Wintel". Oh the irony.... The funny thing is that most Mac users at the time (and maybe still now, who knows?) did not realize that one can have a PC that has absolutely nothing to do with either Windows or Intel. AMD + Linux/BSD is a perfectly viable option.
One that still gets on my nerves is the derogatory term "PeeCee." Um, right. Get a life.
How about this one: "Powerbook G5 next Tuesday!!!!111" :D

I say Wintel sometimes because it's the easiest way to discuss the whole hardware + software architecture, even now when there are Macs running off x86 and Core processors.
But I never really used it as a derogatory term. I find that whole business really irritating... like you said, "peecee" and also insisting on using "windblows" or "M$" every single time a person wants to refer to the respective name. It seems to me a lot of those people end up being angry about a mixture of a specific technological issue, which has to do with their Windows ignorance more than MS's product quality, and just some overall random angst directed at Microsoft because they're successful.... They get the coveted ™.

"pc users are ignorant, they know nothing about computers"
I would imagine (and I could very well be wrong) that the average PC user knows more about the technological side of computers than the average Mac user. I say this because of the difference in likelihood that either has ever built a custom machine or even opened their own machine up to add or swap hardware.
That said, perhaps the average Mac user deserves more credit (after all, they did choose Mac). ;)
PC users are definitely not ignorant. Not all of them anyways. I realize you were quoting that, not stating that, just felt I'd chime in. :)

I'd have to disagree with that. On average, a Mac user uses a PC at work (or something like it) and comes home to their Mac. Whereas your average PC user has no knowledge of a Mac.
Those that build their own boxes is such a small portion of the population it likely doesn't affect the numbers enough.

Are you referring to the platform aspect of computers? I am only referring to the technical side, as is "what does GHz mean?", etc.

Hmm. Well, that aspect might be a toss-up. The example you use, clock speed, Mac users are painfully aware of due the the MHz myths over the years leading up to the Intel transition. But items like Video cards would probably go to the PC user. Though I'd say that both camps throw away their machine rather that upgrade it.
I think it would be difficult to measure.

No offense friends, but I think the notion, you can determine the 'average' user's profile, is suspect. That would require an exhaustive demographic analysis. The diversity is huge. So, the discussion will ultimately come down to your individual perceptions of what that is.
