what is the worst question a pc user has asked you?

for me it would have to be: "Isn't it true you cannot put a cd burner in your comp? like apple has to do it.."
:)

share. :)

"you have an iMac? what version of windows does that run then?" a serious question to which I replied, whatever version you like, although i'd advise against any of them.

normal question is is there any software for macs? (legal software, and warez).

i normally send a link to versiontracker for those that ask, and tell there is at least the same counterculture (warez) as for pcs, if they want to find it.

if there are any good games.. i just tell them my favorite game hasn't been released for pcs :D

i love when i get stupid windows viruses in email. i fwd them to f-secure with my .mac account normally asking if that is a virus for windows. if it is they tell me what it is and ask me to remove the file from my system etc. i forward then the viruses to a friend that has 4 macs and makes a virus collection (of mainloy windows viruses).

some of them here have already been said but they annoy me anyway:

1. amazement when they first see blueberry imac, like.. wtf is this why you have kid toy

2. I brought you this (PC) game, lets play it

3. sending me .exe and making me download PC software.. asking for windows

4. where is your floppy drive? (aaarghhhh), i dont like your mac just because it doesnt have floppy drive

5. you cant run apps on mac

yet, 2 of my friends were sorry they bought PC, and few more want to switch.. but value for money is poor :(

they even defend mac saying experience and OSX rules

"Is it a laptop or a desktop?"

The question posed to me by a CompUSA rep over the phone when I asked if they had any 800mhz superdrive iMacs in stock.

Hey, but at least you can. I've made a number of Windows users' jaws hit the floor when I fire up Win2K in a window on my Powerbook.

My favorite bad question: "If I send you email from my PC, you won't be able to read it, will you?"

When the discussion turns to my iMac:
"But you can't upgrade your video card!"

While it's true, I always explain that I don't need to because Macs ship with good video cards (and in my case, I have no need for better graphics).
They never get it.

That, and any comment about floppy drives.

"But, if I get a Mac instead of a PC, will I still be able to get email from my daughter? And how will I be able to view the internet?"

Or

"Isn't it true that hooking up a Mac to a Windows network will cause all of the Windows machines to get viruses and crash?"

Or

"We can't get a Mac for our graphics designer, because, what would we do when it gets old? We usually pass our older PCs to the secretaries, but they couldn't use a Mac."

It's amazing to me how ignorant a lot of people are about the nature of computers in general.

Apple really needs to improve its graphics card offerings. While many users find Made in Elbonia gaming cards to be just fine, I would prefer something better:

Dumb question: You cant pirate Mac software as easy as you can Windows stuff, can you?

Answer: Correct, in my town (I livein a small town in rural part of Spain) there is literally no Mac software to copy, apart from what I had bundled with the PB. But firstly I dont really need any extra apps, secondly I wouldnt and dont pirate - unlike the whole of Spain, and thirdly dumbass, there is so much freeware, and low price shareware out there for Mac, what's the point of your question.

Awkward question: How much did you pay for your Powerbook?

Answer: I invested more than I wanted, but in 5 years time when you're on your second computer, I'll be reaping the rewards of buying the best Mac on the market at the time.

I am the It dpeartment where I work, and I just got a good one yesterday. This girl at one of our stores calls me up and ask "What does it mean when the computer says "You have performed an illegal opperation blah blah blah ....""? So I said that the internet police were on the way. She was like "What? What do you mean? I was just trying to send something to print." I asked her if she had installed any illegal sofware on her system lately, to which she said no. Then she asked me "What will they do when they get here?" I told her she was going to be arrested, and she should erase everything on the computer. She started to get a little upset, and wanted to know why this was going on, because she did not know what she did wrong. I told her this was a risk of working with a pc, and that it had to do with security problems over at Microsoft. The conversation went on for a couple of more minutes before she finally asked me if I was serious, to which I replied "No, restart the stupid pc, and it should be fine. If it does it again call me, and I'll come check it out." Lucky for me, that did the trick, and I didn't have to go see her. I told a couple of people in the office, and we all had a good laugh at her expense.

"i don't want to get a mac because you can't get stuff like photoshop" - this was said to me by a guy at my college who claimed to be a designer

"macs are so incompatible with pcs - you can't even open a JPG on a mac and all the best designers work with JPGs" - said a guy in a computer shop when i was enquiring about scanners. This is the same guy that told me there's no point in getting more than 128MBs RAM.

when speaking to a friend of mine about webdevelopment: "Macs are crap for web programming because you can't test PHP/Perl scripts locally, you can on a pc and it only takes about an hour to set up Apache and PHP once you've downloaded them" - yeah, so true, i mean it took me 4 mouseclicks and apache's running, then about 2 minutes to remove the # on two lines of the httpd.conf.

"wheres the c drive?" or better yet "where's the start button?"

Actually, that's not true. There was a version of WindowsNT 3.51 that was compiled to run on Mac hardware. Now, it has been a while since such a thing existed, but it was once possible to put a breed of Windows on a Mac (not using VPC).

i just thought this was a great idea for a thread after debating in a general computer forum (macs and pcs) about the merits of the mac platform. the person actually said that macs sucked because you cannot upgrade them. at all. :D

"and the screens too thin." HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!! Thats great. I'm tring to get my dad to get the 12" PB rather than the stupid Sony Viao that has the worst battery time and looks like total crap! Well the IT guys said that if he hooked it up to the network they wouldn't support it and that it could bring down all the servers. Now my dad thinks word is the OS its kinda funny.

What gets me is how all the stupid PC makers advertize their comps being able to connect to the net anywhere then in small print it says stuff about you need a wireless card. Many people especialy PC users think that (my dad) thinks from the adds you can connect anywhere with the new Centrino CPU HAHAHA. What a joke.

I'm writing this on my new PC that is totaly sweet. Now all i need is os x. What i like about PC's is how many thing things you can change and mess around with like trainers and such. It's fine if you have a good anti virus app. Norton 2003 Pro is really good. I has deleted about 40. OS X and iapps are way better than anything for PC.

There are a few people I know that have had similar responses: "I couldn't use a Mac because it has no floppy drive, and I use floppies all the time."

I, of course, pointed out that for a few bucks more (about $39 the last I saw) you can buy a USB floppy drive for a Mac. To which I've recieved responses like "that's stupid, it should just come with the computer."

And then they balk at me when I point out that they complain about not being able to upgrade a Mac, and then they complain when this simple "upgrade" is available.

Man, people can be so strange.

Here are some idiotic questions and statements I've heard before from random people both at work and elsewhere:

Overheard in the studio where I worked, when a GRAPHICS DESIGNER was asked to open the PDF file he brought with him on a burned CD: "Is this a demo computer? There is no CD Eject button"

"Is it true that you can make hollywood movie posters with an Apple?"

"Isn't Steve Jobs jewish?"

"My laptop has all kinds of ports and costs 1,200 dollars, but Apple sells powerbooks with no ports for 3,000 dollars! I knew you got ripped off", failing to grasp the concealed panel on the back of a 15" PB.

"Are most Mac people in some kind of a cult?"

"You don't like computers?". This was asked by some dumb chick in my Pol Sci class. "Computers" of course means "Wintel" in her world.

Classmate exclaimed: "My VAIO is smaller than your Apple PowerBook!". It was quite ironic when he pulled out an external drive to use the CD, then I showed him that PB has a built-in CD/DVD-ROM. 1 hour later his battery died and he pulled out a pen to take down the rest of the notes by hand.

"I would never buy a mac, because then I have to buy a mac printer"

"So where the hell is the Claris Works?", was asked by someone who missed the whole new millenium thing.

"I will message you on AIM. NO WAIT. You're on a mac.. should I just email you instead? Can you read windows emails?"

"Didn't Microsoft buy Apple?"

"What's the point of using a MAC when they'll be out of business in a year?". I heard this 4 months ago from an ignoramus who calls himself an MCSE.

"You use Macs? But aren't you, like, a computer geek or something?"

I got this one several times from other students when I was in college (at a school not generally associated with idiocy). Macs are toys, they reasoned, and they were shocked that a tech-minded person would deign to use one. Just because I theoretically know how to deal with junky machines and ugly malformed software, doesn't mean that I want to. It is sort of like expecting a soldier to shoot at himself periodically, just because that's what he has trained for...

My school had just got a lab of new iMacs approximately four years ago. It was the tail-end of the summer. Teachers were just starting to trickle in to set up their classrooms and get ready for the opening of school. I had just finished setting up the lab when a teacher comes in and exclaims, "Oh, great! Why did they get these? They have no floppy drive?" A second teacher walks into the room just as the other teacher is whining and says to me holding up a floppy disk, "Dave, can you help me? This disk keeps telling me there's an I/O error. It won't let me open anything." I grab the disk as the silver protective portion is bent, loose, and ready to fall off. I turn to the teacher complaining about the lack of a floppy drive on the iMac and say, "This is why there's no floppy drive!"

Into the school year about two weeks, a couple of teachers complained that the new method of saving to a networked server was too hard for students because they weren't saving to the right place, and we should have floppy drives because they're so much easier. Lo and behold a couple of days go by and she sends a student down from her class to print out a file from a disk. The girl comes to me and says her disk is screwed up, but it was fine when she saved it at home. I put the disk in the computer with a floppy drive and it mounts on the desktop. I look at the top of the floppy drive's window, "It says, 0 items." I go back to the teacher afterward and I said, "I see saving to a floppy disk is easier, eh?" She's like, "What?" I told her that student was at home and couldn't save to a floppy disk.

Those were stories from approximately 4 years ago.

Recently, a student was complaining about the iMacs saying that they suck and we should get Dells. An eighth grade whipper-snapper. "You see I just got a new Dell," he proudly protests. "And it blows these computers away. "Do you really like Macs? Windows is so much better and easier."

I'm like, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, back up there fella! Are you going to come in here and compare your brand new computer to these computers which are four years old?" He didn't know what to say. I continued, "Why did you upgrade? How old was the computer you just replaced?"

The student didn't have an answer. He was wishy-washy, "Like two or three years old."

Outside of work, in my social places, literally every time I hear someone mocking the virtues of the Mac, I eventually get out of them that the Mac was old. How old? They don't know. I had one lady come back to tell me it was running 7.5. I told the woman if it were a comparable PC it would be running Windows 3.1. She was befuddled as if she didn't know the comparison I was making. I said, "Version 7.5? Of course that's old. That computer is old. You know Apple is up to Mac OS 10.2."

"Why would you want a computer that you can't use kazaa on?"

A girl was watching over my shoulder as I worked on my new 17-inch PowerBook at university the other day, and she was going on at me about how much she hated Macs. In the course of my working, I passed my mouse over the Dock and it magnified, causing her to shout, "God, I hate Macs, but I love how it just did that!"

I find, though, that Mac-haters are in the minority. When I'm working at coffeeshops on my PB, all the people I talk to are up on the latest Apple hardware, and several times in the few weeks of my owning this 17-incher, people - including some on Gateway laptops - have told me that they were on their way to buy one, having seen mine. I think things for Apple are looking up.

This isn't really a single question, but rather an example of Microsoft denial.

Induhvidual: "Mac sucks!"
Me: "Why do you say that?"
Induhvidual: "I don't know. They just do. They're so cute and they look funny. Mac sucks."

Later, after hearing about problems that the Induhvidual was having with Windows...

Me: "You wouldn't have to worry about all those crashes if you stopped using Microsoft software and instead used a Mac with OS X."
Induhvidual: "I actually like Microsoft. I don't see what the big deal is. My computer does what I need. Whenever it gets messed up, I just start all over again."
Me: "Reboot?"
Induhvidual: "No, that other thing you do with the recovery CD."
Me: "Do you mean that you reformat your hard disk and reinstall all that software."
Induhvidual: "Yeah, like every few months. What's wrong with that? I heard that you're supposed to do that. It gets rid of viruses too."
Me: "For what kind of work do you use your computer?"
Induhvidual: "I just do the Internet and a little typing."
Me: "And your PC stops working because of that?"
Induhvidual: "Usually only if I'm doing something that I shouldn't be."
Me: "Like what?"
Induhvidual: "Like being on the Internet and typing something in Word."
Me: "Would you like to try something better?"
Induhvidual: "No. Why would I want to change what I have if it works?"

I have a friend whos a network administrator for a very large company. Luckily for me most of my friends are unbiased and have a Mac envy. This friend, however, insists that Mac OS X is limited and theres nothing special about it. ....Ha, "Nothing special about it." He also constantly brings up that Mhz debate.. I really believe the intellegence thing. Apple users are just smarter people.

When people come to my house and see my Blueberry iMac, they always say...nice monitor...where is the computer?

They can NEVER figure out how to eject the CD...dragging to the trash, always ask, "Where is the button to get this out?"

After they use OSX for awhile they have every single program open on it, because they think closing the window closes the program.

Last they always tell me, nice computer but I need one that runs MS Office!

Job Interview:

My Question: To the customer concerned about getting a Mac or a PC, what do you tell them in terms of pro's and con's of each system.

Reply: Only buy a Mac if you only need to do video editing, Mac's cannot use word or (the best one) play mp3's. PC's can do everything but video editing. So I would say to get a PC unless they will be editing video.

My Reply: Don't call us, we'll call you.

Brilliant thread, guys. i can't remember any specific quotes, but most people i've shown my new 17" iMac to have been split into 3 main groups:

1) Just don't understand what an OS is and what programs are, and how there are choices other than windows. They just think windows = computers. So they just look at me blank-faced when I tell them about my iMac (this includes my mum, poor woman), as they just think its a weird version of windows, and that you can't really do anything on it.

2) Really like the mac and are interested in getting one themselves in the future, if they can afford it. these are people that i still like to keep as friends ;)

3) Challenge me to prove that its just as good a computer as windows, thinking that i'm just a mac addict. they don't really listen to what i'm saying, they just think i'm a maniac and smile, knowingly. its really annoying!

This is what happened when TELEWEST sent someone to install my cable internet connection. One man installed the wires with no problems, and then another arrived an hour later to install and configure the software.

I call him the ICE which stands for Idiot Cable Engineer.

ICE: Hi, I've come to install your new cable connection.
me: Oh great, theres my computer, I'll leave you to it.
ICE: They had to send me because the other guys don't know how to work Macs
me: Oh, thanks.
ICE: No problem, its a bit harder than proper computers, but I can do it.
[ICE sees OS X on screen]
ICE: Oh, I can't do it on this machine, it only works with normal Mac Windows.
me: What?
ICE: I can only do it on the old mac windows
me: Oh, you mean OS9?
ICE: Yeah, I guess. I only have instructions for that
[ICE starts to pack up his things and gets ready to leave, I reboot into OS9 to keep him happy]
me: Here you go then.
ICE: Wow, thats neat, you've got 2 hard disks right?
me: No, you can do this on any Mac with OS X
[ICE follows instructions to configure modem, takes about 20 seconds]
ICE: I think some of my instructions are missing, there should be more settings to play with.
me: Maybe its just simpler on my Mac?
ICE: [laughs]
me: So what next?
ICE: I'll connect it anyway and see what happens. It won't work though. I'll have to phone the office to get the instructions.
me: OK.
ICE disapears under my table with the end of the modem lead. He seems to be under there for ages, looking in a box of old CDs and in my small cupboard. After 5 minutes or so, ICE reappears.
ICE: Where is your computer? Is it in a different room?
me: Its right there, on the table
[I point to my Cube, the only thing on the table apart from the display, keyboard, mouse, and pro speakers.]
ICE: No, I need the actual base station to plug the modem into. It has to go directly into the main part of the computer.
me: Yeah, thats it. All the sockets are underneath at the back.
[I show the ICE because he obvioulsy doesn't believe me]
ICE: Macs are so stupid, you can never do anything with them.
me: Does it work?
ICE: Yeah, it seems to. It must have been used with our cable service before because its already been configured and someone must have put that network card in it.
me: No, its brand new. It just came like that
[I reboot into OS X]
me: It seems to work OK in OS X
ICE: Yeah, its definitely been used for this before, it wouldn't work just like that otherwise.
me: Is that it then?
ICE: No, before you use it you must install a firewall and virus protection. You can get it from this website [I've forgotten which one] when I've gone. Its essential, you will have serious problems without it.
[When the ICE has gone, I check the website. There is no Mac software there. I set up the OS X firewall with Brickhouse instead and don't worry about viruses.

I still laugh at that tw@t when I think about it now!!

(When the original iMac first came out. I was using both platforms at the time, but when I remember this comment it STILL pisses me off...)

"Oh look, it's got a handle on the back so you can bring it straight to the trash dump!"

Well looky here, I'm still USING that same Mac while your pc has long been trashed. NOW who's machine is in the dump?

1.
"Where's the floppy drive?"
"How often do you USE floppies?"
"..."

2.
"Does it run office? No it doesn't, does it?"

3.
"Man, you can't do ANYTHING on a Mac!!"

4.
"Macs like, never get viruses, huh? That's cool.."
(suckers:p)

I can't think of anymore, but I get 'em on a daily basis. I ask for it though, I start fights with windows-users to try to get them to realize that they're idiots and wasted too much money on crappy hardware and an even crappier OS.

I've had several Broadband connections over the years.

The first time, I had one computer running 9.0.4. I didn't let the Configrer of this two-man cable baqnd to touch the machine. He wanted to install a new browser and some software to get it to work with the cable modem.

Knowing how Cable Modems work, I knew this was not necessary.

With the guy over my shoulder (he had to witness connection to do his job properly) I asked for the host ID of the DHCP server I'd be connecting to.

When it worked right then, he actually dropped his disks on the floor - mouth agape.

"You don't even have to reboot? WOW!"

This got the hardware guy running to see what the commotion was about. Both were stunned and actually said something along the lines of "I gotta get me one of those."

Last year, I moved and ordered a new install. By this time MediaOne was now ATTBI, and I was running OS X. And guess who shows up - the same two guys.

I again refused to let them touch it. This time not even asking for a host ID, just setting the TCP to DHCP then quitting the prefs.

This time the reaction was: "Damn that's cool. That's OS X huh? I gotta upgrade."

They both had purchased Macs. :D

I had a similar experience with the computer club I'm in. It's all a bunch of windoze users, and they wanted to see a demo of Safari.

The meeting head was in the middle of telling me I could use his internet connection when I already had it setup (switched over to DHCP and pulled an IP address in record time) he stopped and said "Is that it?? It's that easy?"

1 week later a Mac users group was formed from the same club that, since 1996, was always windoze based. 1 guy so far has bought an iBook.

Like shooting fish in a barrel with an elephant gun...

A little more subtle ignorance...

"If I switch I have to buy new copies of Office and stuff right?"

Two things I always find wrong with this:

1) Umm yeah, your Windows version won't run.

2) You really should buy a different copy for every machine you have, anyway. Not a good excuse not to switch.

Since getting my mac i've opened a few eyes, i get the usual questions.

"What software can you get for the mac"?

My response would be what do you want?

Or... "Is it compatible, can it play files"?

I say yes its MORE compatible, its windows that is ignorant and incompatible, its just that windows is in the majority, infact the mac, just like linux supports more formats than windows.

"Ohhh..." is the response.

However most discussions boil down to gaming, i had a friend who just bought a toshiba laptop so he can play generals. While it is impressive for a laptop, good battery life and power, it just sucks with running XP and it weighs more and cost him MORE to get. However, he is happy so thats that, he wanted to "do" gaming.

Ironic really when he understood how much better the mac was but failed on games, his friend threw up the usual arguments against owning a mac and i made the better arguement. I had won the argument against both of them, price wasn't a factor just games.

However, his friend who was against the mac is now getting a 15GB iPod (After seeing my 15GB) and was joking that he was going to own a little peice of Apple hardware. He saw my iPod and loved it and he has tons more cd's than me. I had converted somebody without trying while that person was negative towards Apple.

Strange strange...

Oo. You just reminded what really gets me:

"There aren't any good games on the Mac."

or, the more accurate...

"The good games take a while to come out on the Mac."

Y'see, I have a base problem with the philosophy behind this.

If you want to play games - don't buy a computer! They're not optimized for this. Get a console, get better play, and save a buck or two.

To me it's like someone telling me that my shovel sucks because his can drive more nails than mine.

With regard to gaming, hppefully MacSoft pull their finger out and start bringing out more games, with the expansion sets.

But yeah, a console is alot easier, i'd probably get a gamecube anyway if i really wanted to play games.

I have to disagree with this at least with respect to First Person Shooters. They are much better on the computer than a console due to the mouse keyboard combo. And heck I love playing games more on my mac than I do on my Gamecube. Would be same way if I had any of the other consoles too.

I don't think all the PC users are ignorant. Maybe a few, but for most of these comments, the people just don't know. So instead of telling them they're ignorant or laughing at them, why don't you just let them use your computer for a few minutes? If you don't have one handy, just explain that the mac can do all the stuff windows does and a lot of times better and thats why you use a Mac.

I was at Best buy trying to score a new ipod on Saturday. Since it was busy, there were a bunch of people waiting for a sales person. In conversation I found out that this nice lady and myself were trying to get MP3 players. We talked about the one she was looking at for her son and then I mention that I was looking at the ipod. We went through all the differences of the one she was looking at and the ipod. She asked the usual, "does it work with windows" and other tech stuff. Ten minutes later she bought a 10 gig. It was through education that made her buy it (although my sales skills did help). When she unpacked it at the register (because I wanted to actually play with one and BestBuy didn't have one to play with), she was in awe at how cool it was. I ended up with nothing because Best Buy still didn't have my 30 gig in yet :(.

Moral of this story...teach these people about Apple products. Don't slam them for something they don't know or understand. Even if they get nasty and say how much better the PC is than a Mac, stay calm and explain. Eventually they'll come around or at least won't have anything bad to say. We'll have a lot more Mac users if this happens.:)

You are very right. Thank you for the perspective on this.

Personally I do sell Apple to those who are ignorant. I just find when someone who is ignorant, and hostile, coming at me swinging bad information, they will only be convertable when you grab their "kudgel" and smack them back with it.

I find that only after that, they'll be the most likely to listen.

In my case with my friend for when he wanted his laptop this is what i did. I was simply recommending a product that i felt was better like anybody else would when they purchase something and like it, they want others to get enjoyment from it.

However an iPod is different to a mac when justifying its features, capabilites and performance.

The iPod is automatically different to the mac because there is so much FUD with owning a mac but not an ipod (other than it costs more, and the opinion is it seems worth the extra cost), its abilities are not so clear. However with an iPod, people know what an mp3 player is, tell them its tiny, lightweight and a wonder of design and they will look at it with a different view. Its a new product for a new upcoming mainstream market, unlike a mac which has been pushed aside because of cheaper options and over the years has slowly retarded on itself to have this image where its incapable of doing anything because 99% of the world uses something else, something more familar from a company with a very large monopoly.
There is no monopoly in the mp3 market, an important difference.
Plus people don't fancy changing their computer as easily as being recommended an iPod and buying it. This is where you would have to educate a PC user on the advantages of owning a mac.
A reason why my friend is going to buy an iPod but not a computer, to much is at stake for them because of uncertainty.
I merely use your examples as an easy way of explaining myself. Its open to interpretation however.

I'm not saying you are wrong i merely highlighting the difference on how much harder it is when choosing a mac or an ipod.

Very true and thanks for bringng that up. The computer replacement wouldn't be as easy as the ipod. However, the feature that the lady liked the best was being able to effortlessly go from main menu to songs to calender to games. It was the gui and how simple it was for her to use. (of course the new ipods size, looks, touch buttons were very impressive as well but the gui did the trick).

Now, OSX although on a different playing field is not to far of. OSX is elegant and very simple. As one person said to me, "Wow, things are so much clearer". This wasn't the screen she was talking about. It was how easy it was for her to view a image, find programs in the dock with the magnification roll over, how you open itunes and everything is just there, open iphoto and edit the pipctures, etc. Basically, when she had a light bulb come on and she understood what was going on with the computer.

That has happen to me twice. People like the more simplistic approach Apple has taken. Things do just work with an Apple.

I bet if I had a PowerBook handy at BestBuy and showed her a few things and let her play around with a ipod and camera on it, she would be buying a Mac. I however don't work at BestBuy nor do they sell Apple so that never happened. But I bet if more people taught others about Apple instead of getting into a debate, there would be more people using Apple's!

hmmm this teaching method works.

i had a friend. he (as most do, still) bashed macs. he, on the other hand like to play starcraft. So, when he came over my place .....

i showed him my mac. he asked about the stability and heat and noise (MDD DP 1G i have). I said, ok - i will crash the mac for you. the pic i have attached shows the apps i opened (xcpt idvd2,imv2,it3,ip1 - and that is acrobat 5 full). all at once. the fan did not increase in speed. i could still use the computer (albeit slowly).
And then we laughed. I had opened them in a 30 sec time span (using an applescript) not to mention my bkgrnd apps. he was suprised.
And we then (after going to my norm) played starcraft. we agreed though - the one buttton mouse should be replace by a two button version.

Now, he is not getting a desktop mac. But when he goes to uni, if he getd into the course he wants (and parents want) his dad will get him whatever powerbook he wants (likely 12" for portability) and whichever iPod is in the middle of the range so that he also gets the extras.

They are getting from HK though as it is cheaper than here (AUS).

The end. Another mac user who is getting a mac through actually using one.

Just been reminded of another gem from my Spanish PC software pirate circle of friends.

I got in from work and my mate grabs me and says he has a little experiment he wants to try with my PB. He hates my mac BTW.

Him - Do you reckon it will read this USB memory stick thing? (Smug doubting grin on face)

Me - Dont know, but we can but try (expressionless but quietly confident)

I pressed the space bar and the PB woke from sleep.

Him - (Wide eyed, bottom lip almost twitching) What! You just booted up the computer? Thats fast.

I am a patient humble man and ungloating I explained about sleep function. I then had to unplug my USB mouse so that his fat ugly stick would fit in the back. Obviously it was showing on the screen before I had time to think.

He is waving my remote Gyro mouse in the air laughing, saying it didnt work in the air or on the desk. Again, I quietly told him why.

Him - So what programme do you have to open to see the files?

Me - Er, dunno, how about click on the drive icon and see what explodes.

Within three clicks his fat ugly mug is splattered all across my screen ina welter of photos. Still not satisfied, he want s a slideshow with music. It is here that I let the side down folks. I know its a piece of pee to use iPhoto, but I couldnt pull it off before his 30 second attention span imploded.

Again I let the side down and pulled the stick staright out the back without ejecting it to trash first. I never did find out if it corrupted his stick, but it sure as hell did nothing to my PB.

Thats impossible, too. The apple logo and spinner doesn't come up when you boot up off a linux cd. I'm positive microsoft will not have an apple logo on their install cd. The blue screen would not come up. Macs cannot run x86 code.

I haven't tried it, but I don't think it will try to boot the CD at all - it would just ignore it and boot from the HD. The only way I can see that would give a blue screen after the spinner would be to delete the Finder or something, but I haven't tried that either (and don't plan to!) :)

That's apparently pretty common. The stranger one is something along the lines of:
"You got an Apple? They don't make computers anymore."

The school system in my area has moved from Apple to Windows-based PCs with Microsoft Office bundled, apparently due to an overwhelming demand by parents that their children "use what they will be using in the real world." After spending all the money on Microsoft licenses, a large support staff, and the new PCs, the school system then claims that it can't afford other things like more teachers, classrooms, books, and even paper. When presented with the lower long-term costs of the Macintosh and the use of inexpensive M$ Office alternatives like StarOffice, the Induhviduals responsible for "technology for the students" programs ignore the facts and continue borrowing money to pay for the Microsoft software and PC upgrades.

i totally agree, schools waste way too much moneyt and then wonder where it goes. augh. at my school they keep the heat on at about 85 in each room, u could wear tshirt and still sweat-even during the winter. its very stupid. maybe instead of doing that they could spend money on not firing teachers,

"pc's are faster"... and they may be faster, however; it all depends on what you want to do. I don't play much games, and the games that i do play, i can play on my brother's computer or even my 17" powerbook, like UT2003.

however, i think the biggest question i get is a mix between, "what kind of dell is that? or more general, "what kinda computer is that?"

the problem: bill gates
how to fix: hire the same guy that was used for pres. kennedy - he doesn't even get caught and manages to blame it on some one else.

how to fix better: make SJ head of MS. he will decide that ms should shut down all non-mac operations and then, and only then, will the world be saved from 98% stolen code and ideas.

Okay, not quite on topic, but pretty close...

Here is something that I used to love to share with PC users as an example of the difference between the ease of use of Mac vs. Windows. This is directly quoted from the uninstall instructions for a certain cross platform application:

To Remove:

Windows:

If you need to remove the application, begin at the Windows desktop. Click the Start button, and point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon. Click the Install/Uninstall tab and select the application from the list of programs. Click the Add/Remove... button and then click the Yes button to remove the application. Click OK to clear the screen.

Macintosh:

If you need to remove the application, just drag the application folder to the Trash. Then empty the Trash by clicking the Special menu and selecting Empty Trash.

May 15, 2003, 02:47 AM
The people who have complained about OS X, largely the people who don't want to upgrade from OS 9, site that as an example of why they don't want to upgrade.

I've heard of people comparing the whole /library thing to the windows registry and some people don't like it. OS 9 was pretty easy; just trash the app & it's prefs and you were all set.

Except windows has those wonderful .dll's

I've had a few similar to the above, including the complete horror that descends when they find out the mouse only has one button (i want 3 buttons as well, i point out OS X has three button support etc etc) and this fact will completely and utterly dissuade them from ever buying a Mac as long as they ship with those "unusable" mice :)

My absolute favourite, though, above anything, is when they say something like "But everything's so simple! It's like a kids OS, it's too easy to do stuff" whereupon I ask what the matter with that is, and ask if they enjoy wrestling with dodgy Windows device drivers for hours on end. They can't really grasp that 'simple to use' and 'powerful and productive' are not mutually exclusive. It baffles me.

-Guys

I have a good one here.

Just last night, I was stanging in line for "The Matrix" (yes there were lots of Trinity's, Twins, and Neo's, but that's off-topic) with my 12"PB. I brought it as an anti-boredom device while waiting. Next to me a fellow pulls out a Alienware Laptop and mouse, then he and his buddy and start playing The Matrix game.

When my friends arrived, I pulled out the 12PB to watch the Animatrix's. Instantly, the alienware guys paused their game and started ooh-in and ahh-ing - with comments:

"Damn! It's got all the ports!"

"My machine's got a full Pentium 4 so I only get 45 minutes on the battery, what's the time on that?"

"It's not a kind of mobility version of the G4? It's the real thing?!?"

"Can you burn CD's with it? <shock> It can burn DVD's ?!?!"

"Where's the eject button?"

"Where are your apps? (I self-hide the dock)"

"I hear it's kind like UNIX. But that's like an Apple version of UNIX right?"

"Too bad it's only got a one button mouse." I asked him if I could borrow his mouse. I plugged it into my 12PB and the fact they instantly had 2-button control and scroll without drivers blew them away.

"What do you use it for?" they asked.
I replied, "Video editing, musical composition and recording and 3D rendering in Electric Image."
Honestly impressed, they then asked in unison, "How much?"

They didn't touch the Alienware the rest of the waiting. Could I have snagged a few "switchers"?

Actually, I doubt they could get sued, in any event. Really, maybe she was using VPC in full screen mode?

However, this is actually a fairly common occurance, only in the opposite direction. For years, because most advertising firms used Macs, whenever you saw a computer in a magazine or newspaper, etc., if you looked at the screen it would be a MacOS screen, regardless of what kind of computer it was. I've even seen ads for computer companies that make Windows machines that had Mac screens put on them in their ads. I still wonder if that type of 'error' was ever caught...

The purpose of consultants is to solve problems. Once the problem (or 'challenge' as we prefer to call them) is surmounted, the consultant is technically out of a job.

As a management consultant, I've had to manage technical consultants often, and I've had a few that would farg things up just a little so they could get an extra week of billable time (utilization) here and there. And they love Microsoft stuff because it's so easy to farg, and to cover one's tracks due to the overbuilt nature of the software.

Recently, at my birthday party, someone brought over a CD with some MPG files of others at the party in somewhat compromising situations (doing odd things playing a variant of Truth or Dare, and such things). Well, I popped the disk into my iBook, plugged it into my TV, and we watched the movies on the TV. Everyone was really impressed by that, but the best part was that one person fell in love with the Dock. He kept wanting me to move the mouse pointer over the Dock again and again, so that he could watch it zooming. Then he asked his wife why they didn't have a Dock on their computer. She said 'Well, we have Windows."

He looks at me with his smug "Mac is crap grin", so I ask him when his birthday is.

I have a very honest PC friend, who used to ask a lot of dumb questions, but I have shown him the light. His last question wasn't a bad question, just a shockling honest one.

After showing him iMovie 3, he asked: "So, when is Microsoft going to steal this and put it into Movie Maker."

I died laughing. :) Too bad its true.

Sorry to double post but this one time me and my friends were discussing macs because one of our friends was getting a new laptop so of course i was bating for the Apple side while my other friend was bating for windows.

My friend while in discussion went on to say that "With macs you cannot do anything".

I replied by asking "What do you want to do"?

"Play games".

While this is true to an extent, you don't spend £1300 on a windows machine to play games when there are consoles for sale for less than 10% of the price in my country.

Anyway Command & Conquer Generals and Diablo2 must be that good to warrant a wintel! In the end he bought a 15" Toshiba...what a waste.

Do you get mad when your friends or colleagues or what not make these statements? If not, how do you broach the subject? Do you try and calmly tell them the error of their ways? Or rather do you just scoff and walk away?]

Damn good question, one that I think needed to be asked.

I'll tell you what I do when confronted with a clearly biased question/statement:

I put on my consulting hat and ask with all sincerity: "What makes you say that?" or "Why do you think that?"

Then I wait for an answer, usually at this point, due to my non-fanatical response (they were expecting a knee-jerk), they stutter a second, and their mind opens a bit.

And we talk about it...

tazo

Patrick,

I am glad to see that you take the subject at hand and deal with it calmly. I have heard an administator at my school, an avid mac user, curse people because they asked what we would consider, a dumb question. If more mac users behaved like you and I do, dealing calmly with the issues PC users face upon entering mac-land, then much less confusion would be created. Just my 2 cents.

DreaminDirector

I do the mostly the same. When it's someone who just doesn't know, I give an amused smile then try to show them that the mac can do otherwise.

However, my friends who usually opening attack my mac (even though it's built them web sites and promo videos), get the phrase "you're an idiot..." and a small head shake in amazement. Then we usually laugh and everything moves on.

-Gents (tazo, DreaminDirector)

I find that most people don't like being fooled, and additionally can't live with the knowledge that that may have happened.

My asking "What makes you say that?" or "Why do you think that?" opens the door in their mind that maybe they bought into some marketing, and more often than not, they'll lose the smirk, pull up a chair, and ask me to show them something.

Yes, I'm preying on their insecurities, but, with the Wintel Hegemony publically throwing billions at the marketing machine, am I really preying? Or simply providing an alternative.

Now think about what I just said - that, is what I provide to the biased smirker.

And, at least, they seem to listen. Level-headedness always keeps respect - even if that respect is a "surface-charge" respect.

I always start from a level headed stand point. In general, I call myself a Mac Advocate, as distiguished from a Mac Fan. As a Mac Advocate, I consider it my job to educate others as to the strengths of Macintosh computers, and also to their weaknesses. I've had several friends that have come to me seeking advice about what kind of computer to buy. After talking to them for a little while, I determined that a PC really was what they needed for whatever reason, and to suggest that they buy a Mac would have done them a disservice, and added one more person to the ranks of people who say 'Macs Suck!'. And even in instances like these, I always say 'well, if you didn't have to do XYZ, I'd recommend that you get a Mac for these reasons... But, since you do have to do XYZ, you clearly need to run Windows, so the system I'd recommend would be...'. They leave with an understanding that Macs are capable of doing everything that Windows is capable of, but there are some minor compatibility issues. ('XYZ' is usually a piece of software that they need to be able to run for compatibilty with work or school, or what-have-you. Yes, I could suggest VPC, but I have many reasons to be reluctant to do this, among others, for someone who isn't very computer literate, I really find VPC too much of a load.)

Oh, here's a great one! I just admitted to myself that a 512mb SO-DIMM for my 12PB is irresistable at $100 to buy now, instead of waiting for the 1gb SO-DIMMs to get reasonable, so I ordered one.

I then went to my IT department looking for the mini-screwdrivers that I will need when it get's here tomorrow.

The comment when I asked was:

"I don't think I have any screwdrivers that are Mac-Compatible."

I can see what he meant, he was wondering if there was a proprietary TORX-style screw, but the way he worded it was funny on so many levels.

Just repeat that to yourself a few times, it gets funnier every time.

From our point of view, it's a dumb question. From the point of view of someone who hadn't used an Apple since 1989, just a precautionary one. I mean, who would think that a video bought in Britain wouldn't work on a US TV? They're exactly the same, but through it in your machine and...

2) "Is this computer made for playing songs?"

3) The floppy question is a popular question?

5) "You can't get any games for Mac and the ones u do get are like double the price, right?"

Well that is just a preview of some of the questions i get..... I do feel sorry for them(PC users) sometimes.

Okay, how about this...

I went over to Circuit City tonight to get a set of speakers to use with my iPod and my PowerBook. When I asked for external speakers, the store clerk asked me what kind of speakers I was looking for. I told him that I wanted a set of speakers to use with my iPod, and I held it up, and with my PowerBook. Then he said

"Oh. I'm sorry, we don't have any speakers that are compatible with Apples."

Well, I just asked where their computer speakers were, and he pointed to the area, but again assured me that they weren't compatible. I made one attempt to inform him to the contrary, but he was obstinant. Oh well. I got some nice speakers that I'm using to listen to my iPod right now...

See this is the area of ads that thw switcher campaign did cover. apple really needed to disestablish the erroneous idea that there is pc only hardware for like speakers, or routers. True the ads were humorous, but ifd you have seen that pciture where it says "if you build a mac designed for idiots, only idiots will want to use it", then one can realize where the ads went wrong. Apple in a sense has a good and bad ad department; good in that people remember them, bad in that they all dont live up to their full potential

Some of their stuff is over priced, but I have often found that if I'm careful what I'm getting there I can get good deals. I always shop around, and the speakers that I got from them were the cheapest good quality (I say so, now having them and listening to them) that I found. The knowledge of the sales staff, well, that's another matter...

I certainly agree on the sales side of things. You'd be lucky to find an employee in the cell phone department that even knows the difference between GSM and CDMA.

In fact, I just did an internet price comparison on the speakers that I got from Circuit City, and their price is the lowest available.

No, they can't. For serious. I'm not posting from my mac right now. Because it doesn't have internet. Buy a Windows machine they kick ass....

I've heard this one a couple of times:

"Oh that's a Mac. Nice. But where is the PC to do your work on?"

Snowy_River

While this thread is fun, and I have contributed a few things to it, I don't deal with Windows people much any more. In my department the main network, etc., is based off of Linux. Individuals can choose to work with Windows, Linux, or MacOS on their machines. But my office happens to be right next to the offices for the network admins. So, I get a lot of harassment about using a Mac. (On the plus side, I've also earned the reputation as the person to ask if you have a Mac question. The network admins frequently refer people to me, and when they do and I help out, they are nice to me for a while. Also, they dislike Windows as much as we do...)

LMAO! I was talking to someone today and he was like, Macs suck because you cannot upgrade them. he then pointed to the imac and is like, you can only have one drive in em, i can stick like 5 in my pc. So then i told him apple has towers, with AGP and PCI slots, and room for 4 hard drives and 2 drives, i went to show him the towers at apple.com; he then shut up. :) I get that comment a lot actually, that 'there is no upgradeability'. My friend had never heard of any mac besides the iMac and thought it was the only one they made. dear. god. lol

I vehemently disagree with this for many reasons. Not that your claim is entirely without merit, but can you reveal your source for this 2/3 off? Lol. And I can get it for 3/3 discount, but so can anyway-steal. lol.

This just happened 10 minutes ago!

Our office receptionist started admiring my 12" Powerbook as I was using iPhoto to manage about 300 pics taken at a staff event. She asked a bunch of really interested questions and then said she wanted to get a Pbook.

I said "you won't regret getting a mac."

She said "It's a mac? Oh nevermind, I don't like Macs."

WTH?

I think the part in Matrix: Reloaded was when they said "obsolete programs writing other obsolete programs". It was something like that, I can't remember exactly....

My favourite was when i was working at a computer retailer that decided to get in the original bondi iMacs, once they realised there was money to be made (they'd stopped stocking Apple products altogether a couple of years previously).

When a customer came in and asked about Apple computers one of my fellow salespeople piped up and said, "no, Apple doesn't exist any more, they went bust and were bought up by a company called iMac".

of course they were:rolleyes:

Didn't we discuss earlier the need to avoid this kind of attitude? I mean seriously, she obviously didn't know what she was talking about. Clearly, she did like Macs, but didn't understand that. She merely needed educating.

I could educate her with some Dunkin' Donuts down the front of her blouse! hahah:D

In all honesty, if I'd had the same conversation I would've had a normal discussion with her dispelling myths and spreading the gospel. I mean, she's already half way there, just needs a little truth put in her head.

Actions speak louder than words, so I usually just pop out the iBook and let it speak for itself.;)

Do you lot think that if everybody were "computer-educated" enough to make a well thought out choice of computer purchase all by him/her-self, that Apple's marketshare would be gr8ter?

The stories (funny as they are) about no-knows actually make me feel concerned. If no PC/Mac dealer's salesman know anything about a Mac, HOW THE H*LL IS HE/SHE GOING TO SELL IT?

Maybe the advertizing which is actually done by Apple (by no means enough over here, anyway.... ) should shift in subject. They always talk about "cool stuff" or "how easy it is".... but nothing about "it can do everything a PC can running XP, and also cooler, and easier" If they do, well.... the message isn't clear to most of 'em.

I agree with you Macrg8. it is a shame that apple does not promote the true features that pc users think macs don't have. they need to show people playing games, surfind the internet, hooking up easily to networ,s etc, etc. Having people say the mac doesnt eat my report is not enough to get people to use macs. Honestly apple, it is about time you get your act together and fire the monkeys in advertising.

Due to the fact that evilsprung took the time to go to the trouble of reading, then posting, somewhat negates the argument.

Would this terse comment qualify as a 'worst thing' even though it's not phased as a question?

Conversation I had at school the other day:

"You got a Mac, right?"
"Yes, I do."
"How's it with them files?"
"What files?"
"Well, you know ... files."
Ummm, yeah. But what kind of files?"
"Well, like, JPEGs and text, 'n stuff."
"Yeah, what about them?"
"Can you open them? I guess not; a Mac can't do that, can it?"
"Riiiiiiiight..."

Another person asking quite a dumb question:

"Why did you buy an iMac?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well, the only thing you can do with it is surf the internet, right?"
"Ummm, no, not exactly. It's just another computer. It just doesn't run Windows, but that doesn't mean it can't do the stuff you do with your PC!"
"Yeah, right. Well, I bet you can't play MP3s, now can you?!..."
"Sure I can. Why wouldn't I be able to do that?"
"Well, then at least you can't open Office files. Ha!"
"You know, actually I can. Microsoft makes Office for Mac. And Internet Explorer, and MSN Messenger. Just like they do for Windows..."
"Ummm, oh. Didn't. Know. That. Oh. Well. Right. Whatever!"
