I call mine the sitting room. I have friends who call it the living room. I've heard main room, front room, and even parlour...

I would say "living room" also, if you mean the room with the fireplace and the TV and the big windows that everyone is in all the time. We also have a family room, but no one even sets foot in that thing anymore (except to get to the kitchen)...hanging out in the family room is like talking during dinner, it's just not done.

I'm with the "living room" crowd. Our house has a living room with no TV and an unused fireplace (we tried to get the builder to build our house without a fireplace -- we live in the south, for goodness' sake -- but he would have none of it). The living room is where we sit and chat, read, or listen to music.
We have a separate TV room which is mainly used for TV viewing, but also is good for private conversation because it is out of earshot of the kids' rooms.
Perhaps if you defined the characteristics of the "sitting room" it would help.
We have a "Living Room", which has a fireplace, and the dogs aren't allowed in there, so it's a place to relax and have a nice chat with company. Also, the kids aren't allowed to play in there or bring any food in there. It tends to stay neat and orderly for the most part, except when housing the Christmas Tree and subsequent unwrappings as it did not so long ago.
We also have a "Family Room", which contains the TV and is where we tend to hang out as a family for TV, board games, and other fun stuff. It tends to stay a little messier with some toys, the baby's jumper, etc.

I know some people have a "sitting room" which nobody ever really goes in and is almost a display except when company comes over. I've always detested these kind of rooms. It seems like a waste of space to me.

Also acceptable: sitting-room
Now the room with the tv, where you hang out is called the "den" or "family-room"

Now calling the den or family room a lounge would be ok, because our family room is where we have an old stereo, a bar and another TV. Much more lounge feeling. So I guess if your living room / sitting room has a stereo and a bar in it, then you could get away with calling it a lounge...but if there is no booze or music, it's just a sitting / living room to me.

My house has a living room and a family room. I never use the living room at all. My family room and my kitchen are barely separated and they're in between the bedrooms and the living room/dining room area.
In the northeastern U.S.A., you'll also hear drawing room because everyone was drawn into that room, I suppose.

Hmm, I thought it was because that's where they drew their tea...but I don't really know.

Drawing Room, it's actually an abbreviation of "withdrawing Room" - a room to withdraw to.

According to our floor plans we have a Living Room and a Great Room. I tend to call them the Living Room (or formal living room) and the Family room. However in recent months we have decided to claim the living room and dining room to be one large repository for the playthings of our much spoiled daughter. So I guess now we have a play room(s) and the Family room.
The Family room has always been what I considered the room with the TV, and other lounging apparatus. Where one goes to unwind and be entertained.

We have two sitting rooms, I guess. What we call the living room has the piano, a sofa, and soon-to-have bookcases and chairs. The family room has a bigger couch, a chair, our TV, the casual eating table, and our Mac.

This is similar to how my friend's new house is, with one Great Room that goes from the fireplace and sofas, includes a dining area, then into the open kitchen area. Then downstairs he has what he calls the Family Room where he has the bar, stereo and the piano.

I call it the living room. And to add to what you've said, it's also a waste of money. I mean, there's plenty of things the money you spent with furniture you aren't really going to use could buy you...A Mac Pro anyone ;) that you would use.
This had never occurred to me before, but I called it the lounge at my parents house, but I call it the living room in our flat. I have absolutely no idea why...

It's a living room for me as well. Some couches and tables where you can read or knit, and still be close enough to the kitchen to get something to eat/drink.
Our family room is in the basement with a TV and some places to sit. Eventually I will build a bar, which will be close to the computer.
We'd sometimes call it the family room. Mostly living room though.

We have basically the same room as your "living room" and also call it the "living room" but it is used in basically the exact opposite of yours and more like your "family room". The actual room that everyone is always in is called the "playroom" in our house. It was basically the kids room where all the toys used to be and where we would, well, play. However, all of us kids have grown up now so there is a huge U shaped couch and a nice big TV...

I think my parents used to use our family room more when they didn't have kids...as it is still designed in a late 60's motif and had the bar. I think I remember playing in there when I was really young...it's sad we never use it much anymore...but it's not as bad as some houses I have seen, where the best decorated room is the room with carpet that no one should walk on and the furniture that no one can sit on.

I read the title too fast and almost replied "bathroom"
I call the "sitting room" a "storage unit" since my bedroom has all I could ever need....except whats in the bathroom. I'm still working on integrating that part into my bedroom :D

Growing up, we had a sitting room (quiet room, no TV, place to sit and read), and a living room (where the family generally sat, talked, watched TV, whatever).
But we never called it a living room, we called it 'the shop', because that's what it used to be. I still call living rooms "shops" purely out of habit, which is guaranteed a funny look or two.

Its definitely a sitting room. As that is where you sit and watch TV, listen to music, talk to friends and family etc.
I guess this could be an American / British thing. Sitting room seems much more common round here. I never really knew what a 'den' was until I read this thread. Interesting, why do you Americans call it a 'den'? It seems really weird, like an animals living area or something.

Depends on how big your house is. I can't even justify using my living room for anything more than guest entertainment since I have game rooms,a family room, a den, a computer room, an office, and even a sewing room for my wife.
At least the furniture doesn't have plastic on it and the fireplace actually burns real wood, so it's actually useable.

growing up, we had a living room (nicer furniture, etc) and a family room (more casual - television, toys, etc.). We used our living room a lot - it wasn't off limits to us kids or anything like that, although since the TV and the toys were in the family room, we probably spent more time in there.
In my current place, I just have a living room.

x2 for frunchroom, which somehow derives from front room. It's all about the bungalow home bitches! :D
In my apartment, the family room is the frontroom, since it's our main living area. My girlfriend comes from New Orleans, so it's somehow the "parlor"? We conflict all the time, but I tell her to check her location.

Well my house has a family room and a living room. The family room has a TV, fireplace, and is less formal. The living room is more formal, having a piano, a fancier fireplace, and more fancy furniture. No one ever goes in the living room though and the fireplace is completely useless because its not really designed well to have a fire in it. My mom is considering switching the two rooms a little bit because the family room has like 18ft ceilings and all the TV sound is inaudible on the first floor and sounds very loud upstairs. The living room has like probably 12ft ceilings (a few feet higher than normal) so the sound would be more contained.
Then there is the bonus/rec/romp/room over the garage/??? room. I call it "The ROG" (room over the garage)

Except for the owning a dog part, sounds like my parents' house. They call the former the "Nice Living Room" and the latter the "Living Room".
We just have one room, which would fit the aforementioned "Family Room" defiinition, but we call it the "Living Room"
