So, I don't have a dedicated macro lens, I have the Nikon 18-200vr, but some of the lightbox and insect shots made wonder what I could do.

a few pics of Lock, Shock, and Barrel...
No Exif, but I think it was
ISO 100
~200mm lenght
F14
2sec
maybe, it was close to that.

I liked the DOF I could get from the mask to the face.
The figure is only about 3 inches high.

Not bad, but I need to do a light box this weekend to get some better lighting and color.

Anyone got recommendations on macro tubes? I have read about the home made version (pringles cans, tennis ball cans, etc) but I was thinking something a bit sturdier might be nice, especially as they don't seem very pricey.

(Minor nitpick) It's still a light tent, even if it's a box, so you don't confuse folks with lightboxes for viewing positives/negatives...

The Kenko tubes seem to get good reviews and they've been around forever, Calumet seemed to have good prices on kits of them last time I looked.

DOH! Right, light tent. Or the "DIY $10 Macro Photo Studio" :-)

Man, I want that 18-200 VR lens so bad. I think that, combined with either the 50mm 1.4 or 50mm 1.8 will take care of just about any picture. Once I get enough with the stock 18-55 that came with my D50, I am going to look at getting that 18-200.

If you really want to do it on the cheap and you have two lenses with the same filter diamater, a reversing ring might work for you. Personally though I'd go with the tubes.

I have been happy with it so far (like 2 months), I was able to get it pretty quickly once I decided, but that was because I got the D200 kit with it included from B&H.

I wanted to upgrade to a DSLR and got big bonus from work, so after looking at my options, I liked the D200 for ruggedness and speed. Plus it felt good in my hand. The 18-200 has been great, very steady for what I have used it for, but I have not really even begun to flex it or the camera yet. I am going to do some shots at a dog park tomorrow and a band shoot on Sunday. Plus building the light tent (in a box) as well, so hopefully by Monday I can have some good shots.

You're pics finally urged me enough to put together my own cheap lightbox. Here are some early pics I did with my DSC-N2, Auto w/ Macro, in a lightbox. The boarders and the B&W changes were quickly done in iPhoto:

snipped images...

Yeah, I built mine this weekend, but have not taken any pics yet, going to try on Wednesday. Too many errands and work gets in the way :p

How big is that Lock figure?

Just about 3 or 4 inches. That's nothing compared to another one of my collectibles:
