1984 or Brave New World?

Do you remember Apple's big ad campaign several years ago (from the book 1984) with Apple in the role of the hero breaking the supposed tyranny of big-blue IBM?

Isn't it ironic that so many Mac devotees are now praying for that same IBM to SAVE Apple from oblivion via the rumored adoption of IBM's PPC970 CPU?

If Apple were truly interested in bringing its 'elegant' superiority to the masses and smashing the mediocrity of that other platform, Windows, the path is very clear: bring OS X to x86 (AMD/Intel).

The truth, however, is that Apple is not all that different from IBM or Microsoft. They are not in it for altuism, they are primarily concerned with bottom line profits at the lowest corporate risk.

Apple has the opportunity to bring OS X to the masses and they choose not to simply because they don't need to. They're quite comfortable being the perennial high-margin niche player pandering to those still enamored with Apple's past glory instead of it's potential.

If I remember correctly the solution to a Huxley's world was to put to statistical outliners on an island. Is Apple that island?

Perhaps it's the fact that most technologies are interdependent. Apple relies on other manufactures, and they, in some small way, may rely on something Apple has or will develop. If nobody in the technology sector needs Apple, then why does it survive? I suppose the view I am trying to convey is this, everything is built on something else. Just look at the auto world to see similar situations. Given that analogy (which Jobs has putforth) Apple has a good market share. The Mini survived, or at least came back. So will Apple.

I say Apple create a new processor. One that'll be better than the PPC970 or the x86! They could call it the Orange©! Eh, as long as they can make it full of Apple stablity goodness I particularily don't care which processor they use, as long as they support the PowerPC until I need to upgrade my PowerBook.

cool, i just read this book in class, very weird but is very cool considering this was his vision from so long ago (well not too long)

Which one, 1984 or BNW? I preferred 1984, which I thought was just much scarier for its time. I never really got into BNW.

BNW, i dont like the book that much either. i keep falling asleep in class, i gotta go to gradesaver to understand it more, when i read books that are boring to me or i didnt chose i will read a whole chapter and not remember what it was about. im not a big book reader, my dad is though, he has read eveyr tom clancy book out there. its crazy

I never liked tom clancy, ever read John Grisham or Phillip Margolin, they are both good authors. :)
