i once was the slacker of all slackers and if had had discovered something like macrumors twenty two years ago when i started college, i would have never got thru my first year
now if i had internet access during my first job in the 70s, i would have been fired during the first week...in those days, one always had to look busy and the idea of people chatting online would have been completely unthinkable
and as far as reponsibility, it will come when you need it...until i moved out and got married and had to pay rent, i was still basically an overgrown kid...there is nothing like paying bills that makes ones grow up but i think you can still belong to a site like macrumors, though i notice the majority of posters live at home or are probably still single and in college having their parents or a student loan pay some of all of their way and i suspect when some of those people are "completely" on their own in the real world, some will drop off macrumors (and if you live at home with your parents but you pay your own bills, you are already out there in the real world...being in the real world in my definition is when the bill collectors own you, he he) but if i won the lottery, i would consider myself out of the real world and in some strange 5th dimension...might be nice, though
but in the end, unless you want to be super rich, i don't see a need for anybody to have less than two days off every week or work more than 40 hours...i see people on salary who are paid for bacially 40 hours and put in a lot of overtime, which goes unnoticed, and basically work for free, which is pure stupidity...if you work for more than 40 hours, get paid...duh
that's why doctors, lawyers, accountants, and smart techies have billable hours...as in per hour
the main reason of this post is really just for the young posters out there...take your time to grow up and realize that being 18 is not really being an adult...that is just some really stupid legal term that is arbitrary...in some cultures, you were an adult at 13 and popped out your first kid shortly thereafter...of course, virtually no one in those days ever lived to 40)...but now that the age expectancy is past 70, take your time, man
there i go on another philosophical hatman rant

i don't know my way around macs as well as some here and i am not good at flamewars so i can never say as much as some here (i average 1 1/4 posts per day now for just under 2 years)
but i am saying a lot on the general discussion posts of macs and religion and i have to say, it is by far the most popular thread i have ever seen since the inception of macrumors
i always knew mac users had this religious fervor about their macs, but i didn't know that it translated into the most spiritually aware bunch of people i have ever met...it's like one huge 12 step group;)

if mischief worked at computerware in capitola, ca then i certainly know him...i applied there but computerware either moved or closed down
everytime i see an apple sticker on a car, i think it might mean that they are not just mac users, but serious mac users, and among serious mac users, some of the really hardcore ones are into what apple is into next, and the hardcore ones of those people visit rumor sites, and the true nuts actually join one of more of these sites, so when i see that sticker, i wonder...
...is that person a macrumors person
...wouldn't a bumper sticker for our site be nice even though there are just a few thousand of us worldwide? i am sure at a macworld, we would see each other's cars
in california, it is required to have license plates in the front and back even though most people only think it is required in the back only...this is one of those rules that is not enforced unless you live in a small town like me...he he
there is this one school, which i won't mention, that has a lot of "joe dirt" types who come from some backwoods areas even more remote than monterey, ca and these "yahoos" always have these customized front license plates and sometimes have so many stickers on their back window that they can't even see anything...i always wonder if this is some jeff foxworthy joke or is it something that is common in the south? midwest?
i am a california boy so i am very ignorant as to other cultures within the usa...my wife is from new york city and i get some of her quirks now
but what is this front license plate thingy with 20 bumper stickers on the windows?...these guys and gals are trained to land airplanes on carriers but they don't seem to think they need to follow traffic laws or even be able to see out of the back of their windows while driving...too funny
so you went to the naval academy...cool
you like ribs and bbq...ok
you voted for george w...that is allowed
your kid is a pacific grove honor student...good
you went to hooters...wow
and hard rock new orleans...nice
went to top gun...neat
you are a "lions" high school graduate...so what
you like the dixie chicks and garth brooks...so
you are a pilot...(front license plate)
beat army...you never do...just kidding ;-)
you kids like pokemon...ok
but all these things in your window as you drive 35 or 85 on the highway is not too funny, especially since i have to drive the same roads

something u said above sparked my interest....in when u see decals on cars & such...
I've seen a small amount of them around here....I have one on my back window to be honest....but how rampant is it out in silicon valley?
the very few hardcore Mac-heads I know are very well aware of this site and do pop in and out often to find out what the gossip is...
as far as the "joe dirt" types u refer to with the overflow of crap on their back windows....it's usually either the more free-spirited who I've found have them around here....
ps: and I know the whole point of this is to truly discuss rumors & such....but it's funny to hear my friend say how proud he is to be good friends with the top poster of macrumors.com worldwide....that is, of course, until one of u guys leave me in your dust...

oh that's right, hippies and bumper stickers...don't even get me started..he, he
i have a theory about some of the military folk that may like a lot of signage on their cars...they may see their cars as an extension of their uniforms...what college they went to, how well their kids are doing, that they were good citizens and voted, etc...
and the hippies, it seems like a way to say, "i am the alpha hippie here and i can prove it with my bumper stickers"...some college (often berkeley), some organic food statement, save this or that lake, a political candidate like nader, some public cause, etc..it is almost like the insignia on an army uniform with all those colorful ribbons above their left? chest...kind of conformist for hippies, but hippies (at least the ones i have seen at berkeley and uc santa cruz) sometimes seem closed minded to me and though i have short hair and carry a briefcase, i can honestly say in my four decades, i have easily voted for more liberal candidates than any of them can possibly imagine, so i never appreciate those sneers i get from a lot of the college set who think i am this untra-conservative square who should be put out to pasture
some days though, i feel like i should put myself out to pasture
re: high poster
i used to go into mac stores and tell them i was jefhatfield and they didn't believe me...i don't know if that should be a compliment or not since they know me as a pc techie

i didn't notice thanks, eye
here i go double posting again and i might piss of ambitiouslemon, who btw, is a really cool person ;-)...beat stanford (or did i get it backwards)
disclaimer on the military and hippie thing...it takes all types to make society go around and even techies like me, often thought to be sexless, unimaginary geeks, are also needed so that the military folk and hippies can log on and flame me...which i certainly expect in the next few days

i can totally agree with the sticker thing. over here in south texas...it seems the ones who have all the stickers on thier vehicle are the psuedo cowboy hick guys who drive around in thier big dualies who cant park worth a crap. they have stickers of big trout and those ram horns. Another popular sticker down here for these guys is... "Powered by the NRA"... i get a crack outa that one. It seems like most of these hicks are overcompensating for something with thier big trucks and all. I really dont belong down here. I drive around in a convertable GT and the only sticker on my car is in the front windshield on the top middle part.... simply the white apple logo. I wish they had bigger ones...by the way.
The military guys over here are usually pilots ....since kingsville is one of the few places they train pilots in america....If not one of two. Most of these cats are from Florida and they dont have sticker issues or anything like that. Im cool with these cats.... they usually have cool cars and such. I mean come on the only people that can own a freggin new Viper, Lotus or a used Ferrari are these pilot boys.

one of my best friends was a major in the air force and he basically told me that most military pilots were "hicks" who were not that bright, but very loyal, tough, and brave - would you want a sensitive thinking man flying an f-16 and have to kill or be killed? i don't think so and even though i am very liberal, i thank god they are there to save democracy day in and day out...they are heroes
i wanted to be a pilot once and this retired naval pilot basically told me after his career in the navy and a career as a commercial pilot..."we are bascially honky tonk truck drivers in the sky"...i thought that was such a funny description
i grew up in monterey county, described by abc news as an "agricultural" community, and no matter how educated one can become here, we are basically all hicks and like i mentioned here before, my new york wife calls me "barnboy" since to her, i lack a lot of city smarts and she told me look at all the people i grew up with...they have longer arms!!!
so i went up to san francisco and low and behold, the city folk have shorter arms and supposedly are a higher life form...at least i use a mac so i am an edumacated hillbilly and so are the officer friends i know:D
the enlisted military people i know actually are a lot smarter for some reason...go figure
krossfyter
Mar 13, 2002, 05:25 PM
well okay...
Most of the hicks down here are not pilots though..im sure there are a few...but they usually never strick me as one. Most of the pilots have the same look... clean cutt...military haircutts.... white boys (almost nazi types...if you dont think of me irreverant)....they were kahaki shorts and navy shirts...and usually are accompanied by model type girlfriends...some pregnant, some with kids and others working on it!
The hicks usually work for King Ranch...have fathers that do, or go to the university down here ...since its big on agricultrue. Most are into drinking loan star beer, having hoe downs, listening to rap music and country music loud as hell in thier dualies and rope some kind of animal (i forget the name) during the weekends. LIke I said before..since they have big drunks....they have BIG trouble trying to park properly. I have encounterd numerous dualies parked almost at right angles to the parking stripes. Its a mess. Some hicks are cool as hell...and our nice...just like anybody else.
