2) Did you get to steal any cool things?

3) Did you sex it up with any hot-but-dumb Geniuses?

4) How many times a day did you lie to members of the public to try and make a sale?

5) What are you doing now?

Welcome back Kingsnapped! I'm sure a lot of folks here have questions regarding Apple retail.

Question #1/2 - What did you do there and why did you leave?

I was a Mac Specalist (regular guy on the floor). Catch was, I was in school too much to go full time. They had me doing a lot of stuff as a Creative, and a lot of Genius stuff, because I was very good at both those positions. Unfortunately, my store did not want to hire a part time Creative, so my title never changed.

I left because of a combination of this, and because my freelance work was starting to overtake the income and hours at Apple.

How was the management? Is it a good company to work for as far as the retail side goes?
The management was awesome, tons and tons better than the restraunts/nightclubs I worked at before. A lot of them came from outside Apple, so they needed some catching up on the technical side of things. Every new manager got up to speed very quickly. From a managerial standpoint, they did an excellent job. My only gripe comes from Apple's constant changes in how they schedule shifts. In the past year, they've changed it more times than I can remember. This caused a lot of headaches, but we got through it.

1) What was the pay like?

2) Did you get to steal any cool things?

3) Did you sex it up with any hot-but-dumb Geniuses?

4) How many times a day did you lie to members of the public to try and make a sale?

5) What are you doing now?

1. Pay was above average retail, but nothing wonderful for a lowly part time specialist.

2. A lot of people from Apple read these boards.

3. We just got our first female genius a couple weeks ago, but I did manage to get in a relationship and move in with one of my co-workers.

4. We are not commissioned at all for our sales, so I had no reason to lie to the public. There are times when I'm sure that I was a lot more truthful than Apple would like (don't get an fm transmitter... don't get office "pro"... get your ram somewhere cheaper.... no, you don't need product "x"). Apple's product is good enough that we don't really need to make stuff up.

Did they say "if you speak about anything you saw here we will kill you."

No, but I was told I'd be arrested if I blogged/posted about working for them, as long as I was there. My NDA doesn't end for five years, so I still have to be careful about big stuff.

How much does Apple tell you about what's coming, do you not hear about new products until the night before or are they fairly open.

Steve doesn't email employees to say "hay guys, new iPods coming out in a month... look out!" It would hurt sales, because MS's would be quietly telling their customers to wait for their purchase.

However, we can tell what's going on. We know when something is out of stock and not in transit, sometimes we get new SKU's, with no names (before the 2nd gen nanos and shuffles came out, we had a bunch of new SKUs for $149, $199, and $249. There's also the rare, rare occasion that a window display or a floor plan can give something away.

NDA is short for Nondisclosure Agreement. After a good interview, you have to sign your life away. I can't talk about the inner workings of the store for five years. On my first day, my manager warned me to take down my blogs, and delete my accounts from message boards.... espcially mac boards. He told me horror stories of people being hauled out of the store in handcuffs for giving away info.

Apple is very good at keeping up with employees. I started up a podcast, and noticed hits from corporate within five episodes. Some of you might have caught a short-lived blog at iworkforapple.blogspot.com. The blogger's plan was to anonymously talk about working in Apple Retail. He got shut down (and fired) in two days.

Dunno how I missed that. Must have been the pain of beautiful memories past...

It's cool if you can sell stuff, and it really helps to know macs.. but you really don't need either. People who don't know OSX go work at cashwrap (assuming your store has/will have one ;) ). You're here, so I assume you know something.

The biggest, best thing you can do is prove that you know how to dumb stuff down. Figure out how you would explain the advantages of a gig of ram over 512mb to an old lady. Figure out how to differentiate harddrive size and ram, figure out how to explain wireless internet, and how it usually doesn't have anything to do with cell phones. You must be able to dumb everything down, and have a million analogies for hardware and software questions, ready to go at a moment's notice.

Here's an example that I came up with for DVD studio pro clinics. Different video and audio tracks on a DVD are like different lanes on a highway. You're still getting to the same place, you're just doing it slightly differently.

There's lots of car analogies.

In theory, if one were to use proxies and stuff, they might be okay. Apple has people who just hunt for people leaking information, and they have their own methods (which I have no idea about.) A lot of people are dumb though, so it can't be that hard of a job for Steve's detectives. The iworkforapple blog guy was trying to be very careful, but he slipped enough details to narrow down exactly what store he was at and bust him. Between people being stupid, posting from work computers, and Apple's secret methods, there's a big risk of being caught. It's just not worth it.

It's been a long time since I signed the stuff, so I don't remember the specifics. As far as I recall, they have no problem about you posting on non-computer boards, or even specific, software boards (autoCAD, 3DSMax), as long as you never hint at who you work for. As long as you're true to this rule, posting in Apple's official boards are A-Okay. Being registered on an unofficial Apple board, or anywhere with any kind of speculation is a no-no. Our intents may be innocent enough (tell people how to use iPhoto, etc.) but they just don't trust us when there's pressure from the community. You may have noticed that one of the first questions for me in this thread went on about new displays/iPods/MacPros... and that's exactly the kind of thing that Apple doesn't want us dealing with at all.

My personal rule of thumb was just to never, ever have any evidence of where I work on the internet. No pictures, no locations, nothing. I'm a member of a few communities (SomethingAwful, for one), and none of them ever heard anything about where I work. On my podcast, I made up a fake bakery that my friends and I worked at. If I had a good story about the Apple store's patrons or co-workers, I tailored that story to work in a bakery. There's a lot of internet detectives out there, and the last thing I wanted to do was kill all of my accounts, just because somebody figured me out and decided to start asking about "widescreen touchscreen 100gb U2 iPods." It may be a bit of paranoia on my part, but Apple does a damn good job of scaring you about speculation on your very first day.

You can be sued, but not arrested. However, if your employer can prove that you broke the NDA they can physically escort you off the premises once you've been fired. Which I'm sure feels a lot like getting arrested. Handcuffs would be going too far I think though.

oooh, I'm sorry to say, but that's never, ever going to work. You can't go back. Occassionally people can stay friends (even that is rare), but live together and just act like you were never in a relationship? Just won't happen. I'll second that. I've never know people to get back together and have things work out the way they wanted them to. I've even tried to remain friends, but even that can lead to hurt feelings when one of you meet someone else or suddenly become successful and the other doesn't.

i have a question for you,is their any hope of promotion from retail to something more? like if you show great skills as a genius can you apply to be promoted to a programmer etc?

thanks

Apple is very good at keeping up with employees. I started up a podcast, and noticed hits from corporate within five episodes. Some of you might have caught a short-lived blog at iworkforapple.blogspot.com. The blogger's plan was to anonymously talk about working in Apple Retail. He got shut down (and fired) in two days.

It sounds like something out of the novel "The Firm".

Apple is clearly not a place I'd like to work. Goodness knows what sort of dodgy activity they must get up to behind the scenes. Well, I suppose Steve is having to explain some of it at the moment...

I would guess that Apple would be like any other employer. They would look at your CV to see what other programming jobs/experience you've had over the years. And if you've got the right stuff, you could then apply if an opening became available.

But I don't believe that you would find a natural career path that takes you from retail sales to genius to programming. The first two, yes, but not the programming.

well i am building up my programming knowledge as we speak, and im very capable in visual basic and a bit of c++, learning the use of xcode tools.

but ill be doing a computer science degree at uni, and i was thinking of gettinga part time job working at apple retail to help me live through uni, dno if you can be a part time genius but im sure i have the knowledge to be one in the future, but i would want to continue on to work inside apple making products rather than just selling and supporting. so i was wondering if me spending time in retail would give me any better of a chance of progressing to a more advanced job.

I applied to apple a few years ago, and I didn't get hired...well I applied again and had an interview this past Sunday. I felt I had interviewed really well and felt good about it, but apparently they didn't see it the same way.

I was about to order a mbp, but now I don't even have any interest...resentment I guess

Yea, that'll show 'em!

I applied to work at one of the apple store that had just opened up in my neck of the woods. Needless to say, i didn't get the job. But, because I didn't... my life is completely different. I found opportunities and friends I wouldn't have had. Life is funny that way.

Not buying a computer that you wanted just because you didn't get the job sounds a bit childish, don't you think?

I would love to work at an Apple store, preferably in like a stock room environment or something.

But putting restrictions on your online activity wouldn't fly with me. Plus I don't need a second job, but I think it would be cool for extra cash during the holidays.

When I work for Apple, I haven't decided if I'll want to be a support person, an education representative, or a programmer. I guess I'll have to let Steve decide.

what are you saying?

His one-time-ex-girlfriend took him back, talked him into working a consulting job for a company named "we're not apple" (which REALLY WAS APPLE!) where upon he had to sign an NDA indicating he wouldn't post to any electronic medium involving any company named after a fruit but he didn't notice cause it was written in invisible ink in reverse in really really tiny print and when he posted his last post on 3-19 he was brought to the apple division of Guantanamo where he's being cross examined by his one-time-ex-girlfriend who, after breaking his spirit, pulls off the mask revealing steve wozniak who steve jobs secretly hired?

that's what I was going to say!

jinx!

Didn't notice the 19 March thing but he must've just been BSing and when someone pointed out the ridiculousness of the "handcuffs" et al, he quietly disappeared.

But, now that I'm back home, I am available to fit him for his nice orange jumpsuit.... I'm sure there's room at one of those "secret" Polish prisons.

No, but I was told I'd be arrested if I blogged/posted about working for them, as long as I was there. My NDA doesn't end for five years, so I still have to be careful about big stuff.

5 YEARS!!! You'd think everything they had would eventually be released after about 2 years at the most...

Why is everyone exclaiming about his avatar? All I see is some text reading "Kingsnapped's Avatar" as a link to his profile page.

 I didn't even notice that was an iPod! I didn't really know what it was. But for Pete's sake, he's EATING an iPod!!
