View Full Version : CONFIRMED!! Xbox Live Vision Cam works natively with 10.4.9

For the sake of the whole mac community :p , brave me picked up a Xbox Live Vision Cam from a local ToysRUs (299HKD, around 39 US bucks or 45 maple dollars), to see if it really works with 10.4.9 without a hack/driver~~
the whole thing apparently comes with the cam itself (ofcoz), a useless Xbox Live headset & some sort of Xbox Live trial gaming membership card~~
AND YES, IT JUST WORKS!! :apple:

Hey, that's not so bad! I got myself an eyetoy not too long ago. It works fine with macam, but maybe I'll look into the xbox live cam soon. Could you post more pics under different lighting situations?

Wow, it even looks kind of 'mac-y'. I guess this is one time when Microsoft trying to emulate macs works in our favor. :)
For 40$, this is going to be a handy option for all those people who didn't want to pay 300$ for an iSight on ebay. :)
What are the details on the headset? Sure it is useless?

Ooh... I despise MS products and the XBox reflexively, but I'm cheap and that looks like a sweet deal (and based on precident, MS probably loses money on it if you don't sign up for XBox live).
But do I take the "useless headset" comments to mean that the camera has no sound input and the headset doesn't work with 10.4.9? That'd add another purchase if you wanted to use it for iChat.

Awesome....I'll pick on up soon, for 40 bucks for a camera for Xbox 360 (one day) and my Mac(now), very much worth 40 dollars

Just in case some folks missed it (although I imagine the majority of readers here are aware of this), the latest OS X update (10.4.9) includes support for USB video cameras in iChat. So I imagine that more than just the XBox Live camera will work.
From the 10.4.9 release notes (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304821):
iChat, iCal, and iSync
* Resolves an issue in which iCal reminders may appear off to the side of the screen.
* Resolves an issues in which some events added to particular dates may not display correctly.
* Event notes are now synced between iCal and Nokia N70 phones.
* Adds iSync support for more devices.
* Includes iChat support for USB Video Class webcams.

This will be great for people who don't want to shell out the insane eBay costs for a used iSight and still want a quality cam. Plus it looks like it actually has "the mac look"

Out of curiosity, just tried plugging in my PS2 EyeToy, and it didn't work.
I have an iMac G5 running 10.4.9
There's a possibility that USB webcams may still not work on PowerPC Macs - the USB kernel extensions have been updated in the Intel version of 10.4.9 but not the PPC version.
Can anyone confirm whether or not they now have a USB webcam working with 10.4.9 on a PowerPC Mac and/or Intel Macs?

Tested the Logitech QuickCam Fusion and Ultra Vision on both an Intel MacBook Pro and PPC iMac and both worked beautifully with 10.4.9, where nothing worked with 10.4.8 and look terrific.
So, I suspect that the XBox Live camera will work on the PPC iMac as well.

The resolution IS NOT 640X480, that's the interpulated resolution that it produces. The true resolution is half of that.
Just like most $30 webcams. Not to mention the lenses on these things might have well been made with frost paper
magicRob

I would think the 640x480 is right... the 1.3mpx is the interpolated bit :)
640x480 = 307,200 pixels...

The eyetoy does work, but you have to use the Macam (http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/) driver in order for the mac to recognize it. Remember, 10.4.9 does not recognize EVERY USB webcam. Since 4.3, mac's were able to recognize UVC compliant webcams natively. The only thing 4.9 does differently is let you use these webcams with ichat. FYI, UVC is a new driver and there are only a handful of webcams that are compliant with this standard.

hey guys - i'm in a dilemma! I need to find an affordable (no more than $125) web cam to use as a security camera that will work with the EvoCam software on my G5 Dual. According to the EvoCam website, the software will work with any quicktime compatible camera. I suspect that someone is breaking into my house. We are leaving this weekend and I need to setup something reliable before I leave.
Does anyone here know if any of the follow cams discussed: Vision cam, Logitech QuickCam Fusion and Ultra Vision will focus in on someone about 10-15 feet away? I'm going to point it at my front door to see if it would work for security. Could someone test this for me before I go out and buy? I need to be sure that the picture is clear enough to see who's breaking into my house!
thanks for your help.

Valerie,
I think you could verify that someone is breaking into your residence from 10 to 15 feet away, however I'm not the least bit convinced you'd make any kind of positive identification. Most, if not all, of these web cams are manually focused or the focus is adjusted through the software (IE if it's really bad the computer will attempt to clean it up, but only within the limits of the normal image), I don't believe there is a web cam that is motion-focusing....although it would be quite cool

First of all, you have to use 10.4.9 in order for it to work. Everything below 10.4.8 won't work.
And the program people are testing with is ichat. Try that.

...so you can talk with people without them hearing your iTunes music blaring in their ears....
But if you want that, I think there's a preference in iChat to disable that. but be warned, the music they hear will be really loud.

This will be great when the new PS Eye (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_Eye) comes out later this year. The new PS Eye has a multi-directional voice tracking and (supposedly) a higher resolution camera (2MP?). I don't even mind the design.

i have problems with the connection of the xbox vision cam and my G4 powermac - 10.4.10.
the system profiler detects the xbox usb cam, but opening ichat or macam or skype or whatever it says: no camera found !

Well, i have some bad news regarding this cam. Yes it does work with USB 2.0 and OS 10.4.9+ (mine is 10.4.10).
I have a USB 2.0 card with an NEC chipset, but each time i boot my mac, i have to unplug the cam, then re-plug it back in in order to get any program to see that it's there, even Apple System Profiler.
Any idea why it's doing this?

I plugged it in and it worked on intel mac mini, with leopard 10.5.1 it works on ichat, and latest skype, it does not work on msn for mac but does on amsn.
You will need a usb mic as it does not have one built in the cam.
I am using an old usb webcam (stripped and put into other case) the mac does not see the cam just the mic, so am using that, if I switch to windows on parallels it see the old webcam but, I tell it not to use it, just use the mic. windows also sees the xbox live cam but no driver for it, if you tell it to search for driver it will goto internet and micro$oft for driver file and, install it, (you can't get it yourself from M$) all works, on msn and skype both in windows and on mac, it also works in windows with bootcamp, it may not work with vista.
the xbox live cam comes with 1 months subs to xbox live, a headset, and cam.
xbox cam spec's.
VGA 640Hx480V video resolution at 30fps (frames per second) and still photos at 1.3 megapixels.
isight spec's:
VGA 640Hx480V Video resolution at 30fps (frames per second) built in mic.
so you can pay up to 150 uk pounds for isight or 24-50 uk pounds for a Xbox live cam, which would you go for?

I purchased one of these, and had trouble getting it working. I have OS 10.4.11, installed on an Intel Mac Pro.
Two things I discovered: First, the camera would NOT work on a USB hub. I had to plug it in to the front of the CPU tower. Second, I had to open iChat's preferences and click the Video tab, after which point the camera would be recognized. (However, this would not work if the camera was first connected to the wrong USB port. In that case, I had to connect it to the right USB port, totally restart iChat, and go into preferences again, at which point it would start working.)
On another note, the shareware program iGlasses greatly enhances the image quality. So also does dimming any bright light.

OK, so I'm stuck on this.
I have the X360 cam, and I've plugged it in, and it does nothing; shows no response and nothing happens.
I have a Power Mac G4, and I'm runnin' OS X 10.4.11.
I've looked into that Macam site and listed in the drivers, it show that it doesn't support the Xlive cam.
I'm at a loss as how to make it work on my mac.
Had some generic webcam, I don't remember the brand, and plugged it in as well and it too showed no response.
But when I go to Apple>About This Mac>More Info>USB, it shows that my cam is plugged in. It reads the information of the cam and recognizes that it's attached, but for some reason I can't get it to activate on iChat or anything.
