external hdd seems too cheap

I would say that price is perfectly reasonable for an external drive. Considering I just picked up a 250Gb internal drive for $70 from Circuit City that price for an external is just about right.
 
Sounds about right to me. PC World do a similar Freecom drive for £59 and have a 320GB Maxtor USB external for £75 if you want something a bit bigger.
 
strange. i researched this a few weeks ago and concluded that i should be paying roughly double that.

but then i was looking at lacie hard drives....

Lacie drives are overpriced.

Just get a drive + an enclosure. Takes a few minutes to pop the drive in.
