if you've got an external monitor, keyboard and mouse attached, the sleep light just stays on when using it with the lid closed.

my mac puts me to sleep everynight with that pulse. it makes you so warm and fuzzy inside 😀 i love my mac

#1 reason to buy a mac:
When you go to forums, it's the only kind of computer that people will rutinely create personalities for and say they make them feel "warm and fuzzy" 😛 inside.

(actually, I like seeing the sleeping blinker going. it tells me if the laptop is sleeping versus when it is turned off. I do cover the blinker or point it away from me though if I'm trying to sleep.)

Noticed it about 8 years ago when I had an iMac G4. I also love how it only comes on if the Mac is sleeping so as not to distract you from actually using my machine. One thing I've noticed about just about every PC, especially laptops, is that they have bright power LED's right on the screen or below it in your field of view which is very distracting and annoying when you are trying to use the machine. My Dad's laptop even has about a half a dozen different ones for each hardware function that no one in their right mind really needs to know these days. The HD is writing? Really? Network is working? Gee, thanks. And they're blinking and blinking and they're blue. The brightest LED color. The LED on the front of my TV that tells me it's on and off isn't as annoying. And I had to cover that one up with electrical tape!
Apple gets LED's right. One single LED that tells you the machine is on, but sleeping. And nothing else. (The 5 for the battery don't count as they're out of the way and only for checking once in a while.) When the screen is on, you can see the computer is on. When it's sleeping, you can see the LED telling you that it is powered on. This is how electronic devices should be designed.
Oh, there's also the green LED on the power cable, but it's so unobtrusive I didn't even notice it while I was writing this. At least it's not as bright as the circle that came on the G3 and G4 iBooks.

That's yellow. Red means it's gotten a taste of human blood, and it's hungry for more. 😉
