View Full Version : Mac Pro smell - almost 5 days, still there

What is this smell coming from the mac pro? It's not bad, or unpleasant, but ever since I took it out of the box, it's had this aroma, sort of like a new car smell?
It's not faint, if I leave the room for a while and come back, it's definitly lingering in the air.
Is this just me?

It's special pheromones that ensure you'll buy another Mac. I believe they make it by wringing the sweat out of Steve Job's black turtleneck tops and mixing it with Jonathan Ive's hair follicles. I could be wrong though, it might just be new plastic.

One of my pals came over to my house top see the new Mac Pro - when he got into the room that the Mac Pro was in he asked if i had been smoking herbs, as that is what he thought it smelt like
ps I don't smoke herbs.

That is a special secret chemical that is sprayed in the units prior to shipping. It provides the RDF.
My Mac Pro has it now I own two of them, one in my office and one at home. The RDF is strong.

Yeah, that's what I found. It was particularly strong 'round the back vent, under the screen. I've got a pretty crazy sense of smell though, so I'm not sure it's necessarily all that pungent.

Oh boy that smell!
I did a contract job a few years back installing iMac's into local schools and got addicted to that smell! Then when i picked up my MBP which was the first new mac i had come across since the install job i literally sat there for a good few minutes reliving that smell haha!
Don't worry it'll be gone after a week or so.. then you'll start missing it!:(

Seeing as Macs contain a LOT of polycarbonate, I'd hazard a guess that it is this which causes the aroma!. Probably also, the flux or type of PCB washing chemicals, used in their fabrication plants. Could be the glue from the wrapping mind you, or even a combo of ALL the above!.

Hello,
I just got a new Mac Pro 3.0 exactly 7 days ago, which has smelled up the room since the day I turned it on. I also got a new freezer in the room the same day so I thought it was the freezer but I started smelling around the room and it seems the smell is coming from the vents on the front of the Mac Pro case. It is quite a smell ! Smells like a skunk.
Has anyone contacted Apple Care Support about this and if so what did they say? I'd rather not send my new Mac Pro back to them but quite honestly I have never had a piece of computing gear smell like this ever... this is far from new car smell.

Haha!
It's fantastic with new LCD's. They really hum the place out. When I got the Dell 24" it severely stunk out the room, sadly it started dissapearing after day 3 - 4 and slowly dissapeared.
Imagine what it would be like getting say 24 Mac Pro's and displays for an office or even education, and they were just unwrapped and setup/powered on in the room.

actually it's the residue of the cleaning agents (used to clean the motherboard) evaporating.
a few days isn't bad, but you really should open a window if possible and use a fan to move the air around. It's not good to keep breathing that :(
Edit : some of you already nailed it!

Yes, it can be quite overpowering but I never found it as bad as some have made out. Windows are always normally always open. :)
At times it almost reminds me of marker pens, except not as strong.

When I first got my PowerBook, I was at the Dalhousie University library (one of them anyway) and the first thing I did was stick my nose in the back vents and breathe in DEEP. People looked at me weird, but I didn't care.
I still smell new Macs whenever I have a chance. I'm not shy about it.

Rainman, I have been describing the same exact smell. i have pinpointed it down to my new macpr0 2.66. It is a sweet skunky smell and is driving me nuts. In no way is it a pleasant smell, unless you have a thing for skunks. I saw on another board the name and number for an apple care guy that is supposedly very helpful.

Well, let's consider this for a moment.... It is fairly common knowledge that a fart's aroma is most appealing to it's creator (i.e. nothing smells finer than your own brand). So, if you own a Mac Pro it is YOUR machine. Therefore, if it were in fact emanating a flatulent odor, wouldn't the smell be appealing since it is your own brand by way of ownership??
:p:p Yeah.... things are really getting this desperate in the MP forum. LOL :D

OK, this is beginning to drive me crazy. How long should I expect My Dual Xenon to smell? (It smells exactly like skunk).
You know, my system never did smell.
You can see my specs below my post in my signature.
But, perhaps I can offer a bit of a reason why some may smell and others don't.
First, my Mac Pro was assembled and built in the California facility in the United States. It was then shipped to me (also in the United States). So, that is my initial guess as to why it may not smell.
Now, that may initially sound a bit prejudiced. But, it's actually based on an observation going over many, many, many years.
I spent a good portion of my working life as a licensed OEM and System Builder. And, as such, I handled a lot of individual computer components. And, I found that each originating country came with it's own unique smell.
For example, upon opening the factory packaging of a main board from Taiwan, I would get hit with an extremely strong odor. But, opening a main board from a company here in the United States (of which there were only a few left at the time) would have little or no smell. Parts from China carried a different smell yet, as did stuff from Hong Kong, and other countries of origin.
I actually used to try and guess the origin of a part based on it's smell when I opened the box. After making a prediction, I'd look at the label on the component to see if I'd guess right.
I usually put the systems through a week long burn-in and testing process before I would deliver them to the end-users.
And, usually by the second day of their burn-in testing, they would no longer smell.
The components which usually carried the strongest smell were usually main boards and power supplies. The main boards I used rarely came with CPU's. I ordered my stuff direct and separate. So, Main boards, CPU's, heat sinks, and so on were all delivered in separate boxes. So, the smell was obviously not the heat-sink compound (as non was present yet).
As for why the parts from different countries smelled differently, well that's anyone's guess. I wouldn't suggest that it was due to the people building them, that'd just be wrong
But, a few ideas come to mind. One, since I'm in the United States, perhaps I'm more accustomed to the general smell of our environment and don't notice similar smells as much. Perhaps the packaging traps a bit of the environmental air / smell into the package and it remains for a few days after opening. That's not entirely unreasonable in industrialized areas. There's a larger town 50 miles away from me, and any time we visit there my daughter asks what's that smell. I tell her it's just the way that town smells. It's environmental.
Perhaps if someone in Taiwan received a package from us, it would smell different to them as well. They're going to be more accustomed to the smell of their environment. So, our scent would seem different.
The other thought, is perhaps it's just due to the unique chemicals used in their manufacturing process. Perhaps they use a chemical more common in their area to do the final "wash" of the components after they are manufactured. And, perhaps China and Taiwan and the United States, and other countries all have slightly different chemicals that we use to do our final "wash" before packaging. So, that could account for a difference in smell.
Almost any new item you could purchase will have a smell though. Wood products, electronics, cars, homes, etc.
In a car, it's all the hazardous chemicals bleeding off that produces that new car smell. It's glues, rubber compounds, and other adhesives and chemicals bleeding off that produces that smell. And, actually makes the cars a health hazard for a few weeks or months until it finishes bleeding off. Fortunately, I've never heard of anyone dying of new car smell :D
I looked at a new manufactured home once, and remember seeing the warning label cautioning that it will bleed off ammonia into the air. And, cautioning of the health hazard that it would pose.
*** EDIT ***
I just remembered, it wasn't ammonia that it was warning about. It was that it would produce Formaldehyde in the air within the home. Yikes.
*** end edit ***
New lumber shipping to the United States from China contains a glue chemical that is banned in China for their own use. But, it's permitted for exports. So, that produces an aroma.
In the end, I think the smells all just depend on what the item is, and where it was made.
Of course, there are some smells that are going to be due to a defect such as melting plastic, and so on. Obviously, those should be dealt with.

MADE IN CHINA.
Everything that comes from China these days has an odor. If the odor is not particularly offensive (hard to believe it isn't) then it's an exception, as China is strangling itself in toxic chemicals and exporting those chems to the US with everything it manufactures. I recently purchased the newest iMac; the Mac itself didn't smell too bad, but the packing material was so noxious I had to seal the box back up and put it outside. It had shipped to me directly from China. My wife had to return 3 different camera cases (MIC) because the chemical odor would not dissipate after several days of airing out outside in the fresh air.
Everything – and I mean everything – that comes from China these days has an odor, be it awful, acrid or sweet, that odor is a chemical; if you smell it, it's in your body.
Now many of you may pooh, pooh this, but it is a further indication of the ever-increasing chemical pollution occurring around the world from unregulated manufacturing and the use of new and untested chemicals that are being released into the atmosphere. Forget saving the planet – how about saving us!
And since Apple began manufacturing primarily in China they've had to post a notice on their support site:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=24947
New Equipment: Odors May Be Present Short-Term
New products sometimes emit an odor after being turned on and allowed to warm up. In most cases the odor dissipates after a brief period. This is normal.
In some cases, an unusual odor may be detected when a product has been turned on and allowed to warm up to operating temperature. Typically, the odor is detected when the product is new, similar to odors generated from new carpeting or a new car. In most cases the odor dissipates after a brief period.
If the odor persists, place the unit in a well-ventilated room and allow it to operate over an extended period of time (possibly 24-72 hours) or until the odor dissipates. If the odor persists, contact your local Service Provider for an evaluation.
And of course, Apple's final little disclaimer:
This article is not tied to any specific product, nor is it in reaction to any specific issue. This article is meant only to serve as general information.

Hi.
I've had my Mac Pro for about 90 days now. I had hoped that the fumes would dissipate over time, but they haven't, even after 3 months of daily use. And it's not just a matter of an unpleasant odor...my throat burns every time I'm in the room with the computer on. Now that the weather is changing, I can't leave my office window open, so it's time for action.
From all of the threads in various forums regarding this problem, it seems that the removal of the excess thermal compound is the most promising solution. I've called tech support, and while the rep I spoke to hadn't personally received any calls on the matter, he confirmed this theory based on his years of computer maintenance. I will be covered under warranty to have an authorized repair center clean off the heat sinks.
Before I take it in and have to do without my computer for possibly several days, I wanted to check with those of you who have tried this approach. Did the removal of the compound actually solve the odor issue for you? Anything else I need to relay to the repair guys that might ensure a proper fix?
Thanks!
Fred
FWIW, my Mac Pro box says "Computer Assembled in USA."
I'm new and don't know how to start a new post so I am seeking help here.
My Macbook is emitting a horrible toxic smell which gives me immediate stomach cramps leading to diarrhea the minute I turn it on if any part of the machine is resting on my stomach. I didn't realize the smell was from the computer until I took it to my parent's house and my mother told me it stunk. I thought I was getting sick from a toxic house. Recently my Seagate hard drive crashed and I replaced it with a new 160 gig drive. At the same time the Apple Store replaced the keyboard and lower inside case because it was cracked. Since then the smell has become unbearable. I can't stand to have it on even if I have it on a tray or table.
My Macbook is still under warranty. I originally purchased it in Sep 2006. Can anyone tell me if there are reports of similar problems and where I should go for help. I love the machine and have owned Mac's since day 1 and I rely on it for daily research. I am also concerned because I am chemically sensitive.

I don't get what you lot are doing. When I first got my Power Mac, sure there was this smell but it never stunk the place out like what varnish would do. The most it lasted was like a day, two the most because it was an entire new computer. I mean the display came as well, as they usually send out the most fumes, but nowhere to the extent causing sickness.
Even when I got the Mac Pro February/March this year, the smell only lasted half a day. In fact I think it was less. Even then, the only way you could smell it was when I was connecting everything to the ports. Though 9/10 my windows are always open.
I've never suffered sickness or any other problems with this. So I have no idea what these certain individuals are doing, and it was anything but toxic.

I've had mine about a week but there's no "new small" anymore...perhaps it because I've left it on all night for about a week?
or the fact I have roomies who use too much cologne? or maybe because there's a large pot of green tea next to it?
whatever the reason, it sure as hell smelling great!!!
anyway.. it's still working even though I've had the lid off already! swapped out the default gfx card for something 'thought to be better' but sadly not the case... then later, slid out the "L" cover and rooted around inside. Now I'm shopping for RAM! I'm thinking about 8Gb RAM upgrade or more, plus a couple of high performance hard discs... should i go for the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 or WDC's alternative?? I dunno.. I'm still looking.
