So my wife's Cavalier got totaled yesterday :(( I became the meat in a Ford Excursion (back) & Ford F250 (Front) Sandwich, when I was slammed into by the Excursion @ 50+ MPH, because the woman driving was talking on her phone.:mad:Made a total wreck of my car, but I'm ok,:) (Just a stiff neck & a little ankle pain). Anyway, if you have photos of your wrecked cars POST 'EM.
BTW The Woman who hit me didn't get cited for anything at all!, Not even violation of basic speed law, or failure to control her vehicle.

I'm sorry to hear about the crash mate. We haven't been able to talk on mobiles (cell phones) whilst driving for a while now, and I think it's a good thing. It's not a terribly well adhered to law at the moment, but it's still quite young. What conversation could possibly be worth having a crash like that?

Wow that's terrible. Good thing you are okay, but it's just unbelievable that the woman wasn't issued a citation. How does that happen? Maybe she was a pron star…

I suppose it's a bit ironic that a little Chevrolet car got sandwich smashed between two giant Ford trucks. Damn, those Ford owners take the rivalry seriously!

I was in a similar accident last week - I was in a Ford F-350 (our archaeology field truck) making a left turn across traffic when a woman in a brand new Camry rear-ended me going 50mph. She had been so engrossed in her phone call she drove right into the back of the truck without ever seeing me - didn't even hit the brakes.

Her car was totally destroyed, and she would certainly have been killed had she not been wearing her seatbelt or not had an airbag. Our truck drove away relatively unscathed, all things considered, but we were all very lucky. She got cited for failure to control, I believe.

I have made calls on the road in the past, but I have made a very conscious effort not to do it for years now...when I'm driving somewhere I'm driving, not eating/talking on the phone/reading something etc.

It's illegal to drive while on the phone in the UK for good reason. Good to hear you are OK.

Aug 9, 2007, 09:36 AM
It's currently not illegal in Canada as far as I know. I feel it should be illegal because a lot of people can't do two things at once. If people could focus on both then it wouldn't be a problem. However in my experience most people cannot drive and talk sadly.:(

In New Jersey it is already illegal but no one seems to uphold the law because I pass car after car everyday with people on their phone! When my dad does it i get really pissed off and sometimes will do thinks like crank up the radio so he can't hear and has to get off... There are probably safer ways to do it but it seems to get him off pretty quickly :D

Those are two really big cars. I'm surprised your car held up as well as it did.

If she really hit you at 50+ MPH, then that is just ridiculous. I'm not a litigious person, but it wouldn't be unreasonable to sue her in civil court, and possibly the officer on the scene as well.

Anyway, not as bad as that girl who was texting while driving and drove her car off the road.

I'd rather post pics other people's stupidity.

There was a really bad accident up the corner this past weekend involving 3 cars and the woman in one of them was pregnant.

Hope you are okay, you should go to a Chiropractor to have your neck/back checked for internal injuries.

Glad you're both ok...

I'll admit that hands free dialing is better than fiddling with a phone to dial, but would a hands free device have prevented either of these accidents? (Posters didn't mention it, so I'll assume no hands free devices used.) If your hold a burrito next to your ear, are you more likely to rear end another driver?

It's a matter of compromised attention, not one of holding an inanimate object in your hand.

Wow—I'm glad that your relatively OK, a sandwich like that, I'd expect that little Cavalier to be much more banged up, and you as well. Those two vehicles are hugantic.

Here in Indiana, yapping away on cell phones is not illegal, but they almost certainly should be. Last month my mom was driving down the highway, and some car pulls out into heavy traffic, doesn't look or anything. Of course, the idiot was on his cell phone. Its a good thing that my mom was paying attention, because we were about [] that close to rear-ending this guy. Sure, some people may be able to carry on a cell phone conversation while driving in heavy traffic, but they're rather in the minority.

I got into an accident in the winter of 2003. The sun was unusually bright and it was warm that day. I was driving back from class and I as I got to the top of a big hill the sun blinded me. I even had shades on and I still couldn't see anything. It also didn't help that there was water all over the road from melted snow and there was a lot of glare from that. I didn't see the fed ex truck parked on the side of the road and I rear ended him. His truck was fine but my jeep is another story...

All I got out of it so far is a stiff sore neck & my left ankle is sore when extended.:( I lucked out, though the car's totaled. I have a doctors appt @ 3:00 today just to make sure everything is cool. I will make an appt. @ a chiropractor also to be sure. Glad to be here. lets see some more. (I wish I had pics of the car I put into spider lake off of a tree in 84, guy hit his brights in a curve & I over corrected & Spun it 3x on the wet leaf strewn pavement into a tree & dropping into a lake off it. The hatchback glass popped out & was leaning against a tree unscratched, while the right 2/3rds of the car were obliterated.
The womans adjuster came & looked @ the car a while ago & said they will have an estimate in a few hours for the car damage assesment/value. I will keep you posted.

To anyone who has been in a wreck at the obvious fault of another, I feel for you.

Going straight at 70mph to instantly turning 540 degrees and being hit head on by a car that was behind, all because "someone" failed to replace balding tires. Not a fun day.

But, talking on the phone, in your car, I've got two words for you (or one maybe)

Speaker Phone.

I dont feel I have any less control over my vehicle when talking with my cell. Driving a manual I usually have my right hand free anyway so holding a phone up as I speak, placing it in my lap or shirt pocket as I shift, is not a difficult thing to add to the multi-tasking that is driving. This is using the speaker phone, not holding it to my ear, not using my shoulder as a brace. Like an idiot with the "chirp" Nextel crap, thats how I hold it. Just so we're clear.

Thats not to say YOU or someone you know has the amount of control I feel I need to be safe.

So, while I agree talking on a cellphone is 99% of the time to blame for bad driving, its not my excuse.

I don't really remember, was knocked out completely until after the wreck. It was a real rainy and foggy night, lost control going around a turn, car hit the curb, tire dug in, car rolled about 6 times and then hit a tree.

jon

a broken eye socket? wow... I have never heard that before, sounds painful....

Yeah, if the metal was anywhere closer I would have been blind in that eye. It wasn't painful but I do have a nice piece of titanium screwed into my eye socket.

A couple of months ago I was returning from a day out, and stopped at a service station for fuel. Just after I filled up some rich dude in a Bentley (but with brains of custard) mixed reverse gear with park, and wrote off my Seat Ibiza.

It wasn't all bad though as I got a good deal on a newer car more suitable for my needs with the insurance money paying a 3rd of it off.

Anyway, here's footage of the accident and some pics.....

Yeah I give an involuntary shiver each time I see that and think I just missed getting crippled. I never walk between cars now.

I edited the video as well. The full version shows me barely restraining myself from ripping his head off. My GF has to have 2-4 months of physio because he sodded her neck up and he crushed the other people next to me into the petrol pump. A regular Einstein.

Completely my fault, couldn't pay for insurance, was driving to a job interview so I could PAY for insurance. Driving up a hill @ 65 mph, saw no traffic, glanced for 2 seconds at my dashboard clock to check the time, looked up and there was a line of traffic at the bottom of the hill at a stoplight, all the way to the top. Didn't have time to stop, plowed into a new Chevy Silverado and he went into a buick. And I got a ticket for not having insurance...

I haven't had any accidents since then, this was 5 years ago.

Was driving from Denton back to Dallas one afternoon when the the rain was really really awful. I was only going about 40mph down the right lane and suddenly i just started hydroplaning. I spun several times hitting the right rear of the car on the concrete and then the front left light/radiator/bumper. I kept spinning and finally spun past an onramp only to hit a woman with the right front light/radiator/bumper. The grill stayed in tact as I only hit the corners of the front of the car. Maaco (finding used parts on ebay, god forbid new parts) quoted repair at $5k. Decided to sell it for whatever I could get it for and got 2 grand, put it down on a fully loaded 03 Jetta GLX VR6, wood trim, rain sensing wipers, leather, digital climatronic climate control...everything! Sticker was 28k, it had 40k miles and i got it for 18k with an extended warranty (to 100k miles). I still miss my mercedes so much but there are so many things in my jetta that remind me of it (german driving characteristics)

Seems like insurance companies like to use "no fault" to reduce claims.

The day they take humans out from the wheel and replace us with well-designed computers with redundency will be a happy day for me. I just do not think people in general are capable of driving safely (though there are exceptions to every rule and computers aren't perfect, I think a well designed self-healing system could do much better than most of us).

Same truck, two different incidents.

1- rolled it down a hill into Dry Creek in Sonoma County. Then I rebuilt it.

2- rolled it again on Kit Carson Pass by Kirkwood Ski Resort. Me and my buddy both walked away unscathed and spent the rest of the day skiing.

I sold that rig the next week to a guy who wanted a project. I also warned him that I had 2 near-death experiences in it. I hope he has had good luck.

Last week, my best friend (almost 18) was driving with one his friends over to one of his other friends houses to hang out that night, and after he left, he was kinda upset at them for some reason (I don't remember why...) and he wasn't paying attention and accidentally blew a stop sign and t-boned another truck at 55-60 mph, flipping over a Ford F250 and rolling into a ditch, with a baby and dog inside.

The truck did not have its lights on (at 10 at night). He lives in a country area, so it wasn't like it was a busy intersection. He just didn't have good luck that night. He called me, all scared, and told me that he was OK and all. He said his friend might have a broken leg, but he checked out OK. Just some bruises. All my friend had was two minor gashes from the air bag on his wrists. Luckily he was wearing his seat belt, or he would have been killed.

The other person, along with the baby and dog, were fine. Baby didnt have a scratch on it, just shaken up. The dog was fine, and the truck driver was a bit shaken up, but for some reason was refusing medical care and didn't know what happened, even though he ended up checking out just fine after being forced to the hospital (because of the baby)

The next day, we went to see the damage, and here it is. He didn't even check out his car after the accident, so he is seeing it for the first time himself. He's on the right in the last picture. He was devastated his car was wrecked, but happy to be alive.

This accident happened in October 2007 - guy in a Ford F-150 ran a red light @ about 35mph, t-boned my car and I rolled into another car. Attesting to Honda's good build, I survived with just a broken collar bone. Car barely had 7,700 miles on it. :(

HANG UP AND DRIVE!

If you need proof that you're not in as much control as you assume-

I was following behind. Not nice to see at all. Could have easily been killed if it had hit the lamp post in the centre of the car rather than on the rear wheel. Luckily he was just winded and a bit beaten up by it all. Car got airborne!

My sister had to deal with a median crosser. She's okay, the van's a write off.

Some, really interesting, and disturbing stories here.

Anyway, heres my story. A friend on I were on our way home from a party that we had been at all night (we weren't drinking for the record). It was snowing, but nothing w were worried about since we were familiar with driving in snow storms. But we ended up hitting a path of black ice at about 35mph. The car rolled into a ditch and we ended up being stopped by a telephone pole. Other than a sore neck and a black eye we walked away just fine thanks to our seat belts. The aftermath:

Fairly misleading, imo. Pretty hard to actually enforce those laws, making the study a failure.

Using your mobile phone (texting or talking) will take attention away from your driving.
