Is there anyone on this forum
that make their own fonts?

Would be cool to see what
people here do for a living!

Fuse......... the 90's baby!!!!

freedom, I've designed one font, but that was at college about 7 years ago, hand drawn then scanned in, and manipulated with Fontographer, it is now safely locked away somewhere on a 3.5" floppy, never to see the light of day again!!!

I'd love to have the time to design fonts, but they're just too time consuming to do them decently!!!

I'd love to see other peoples fonts though aswell!!!!

There are so many crappy fonts
made by happy amateurs out there…
I´d love to make my own font,
but as you said iGAV, it takes a
lot of precious time.

But some say practise makes perfect!(?)

I´d like to see some design-students´
work in this field. Anyone?

This site has 1000s,

I've used it many times in the past, you should be able to find more than you're looking for and good quality too.

Too true about designing fonts (although you should make time, it is cool to create one!!),

Typography itself is certainly a science!! And like any skill, with time and practice, you become skilled....... When I was teaching typography to design/new media students, most didn't even realise what leading and kerning were!! the same with ascenders and descenders, x-height, cap height, or picas.... it seems like typography is becoming abit of a lost art!!!:(

Work wise.... I don't have my own website (yet) when you spend most of your time designing other peoples, it's very hard to motivate yourself to create you own, and worse still..... the most difficult client is always yourself!!! So I always become ultra critical about what I'm doing.....:p

The most fun I used to have designing was doing Enhanced CD-ROM work for bands, it's so disposable..... but fun, and there's less strict guidlines with regards to design which was cool!! as it's a complete counter balance to corporate work!! Did some stuff for the Chili Peppers, Mel C, Filter, Aimee Mann, and some others, was just really cool work, takes a day to make..... so it's short and sharp.... and certainly keeps the juices flowing!!!:D

i want to keep my fonts in seperate folders and it seems that if a font is in a sun folder inside the fonts folder, x does not recognize it..... any ideas besides atm or suitcase? i would rather manually activate them.

help?

I wonder if we can start a competition for who has the most fonts. I have 200.

I also have the corporate font Apple uses. Have a look!

Stop it!

It is not relevant how many fonts you have,
but how you use them.
For some designers (mostly professional!?)
a handful would be enough to make
brilliant design.

I do magazines and use approximately seven fonts.
And that is a bit too much for my liking, but
sometimes a necessity…

iGAV, you are right of course, the kids of today
seem to lack interest in traditional typography.
That is quite scary, who will carry on the
tradition?

Again, if you have trillions of fonts,
let me ask you, how many did you pay for?
Fonts are artwork and the creators
should get paid if their fonts are
used professionally (commercial use).

I´m not as angry as I might seem… :)

i am still in college (working on a bfa in design). the way i see it, if i get hooked on a software/ product that i pirated NOW, i WILL use it later. And when I am working for a living, I WILL pay for my products I use. Personally, I think that certain pro software should be FREE to STUDENTS in order to hook them on the product for later revenues. Kinda like giving out cigs for free to get people to get hooked, but less harmful.

as to the who cares part: i don't. i just think it is fun sometimes to compare. there's no harm in it. so i have this, you may have that. i never see people complain when it come to who has what cpu, but when a software piece comes into discussion, people always bitch. for all you bitchers, calm down, relax, have fun and take the stick out of your ass.

i just see entirely too much bitching here. (i admit, i am guilty sometimes)

It's not how many fonts that you have, it's what you do with them that counts!!!;)

I have around 3000 fonts and that's probably a conservative estimate! out of which my favourites are Univers (all weights) Helvetica (all weights and it distorts so well)), Geneva, bureau grotesque, FF collection and occasionally for a specialised look Emigre fonts.......

Thats right out of thousands of fonts I maybe use 10 to 20 of them regularly.... The others are there if I ever need to get either a specialsed look to a piece of work, or if I'm freelancing at a company and doing print work, the chances are I'll have the companies fonts, so i don't have to arse about buying them again, or locating them off peoples servers!!! Its a time saving issue!!

I paid for alot of my fonts, some are under liscense from companies, i.e. I can use the font for any company that holds a license for that font..... others freeware, others are free and downloaded off Fontshop and Fontworks over a period of 6 years, they soon all mount up!!!

I thought software companies did do specials for students?? although you can get 3 months full useable demos, I picked up Indesign 1.5.2 last year at Mac Expo London, it was a life saver, I couldn't locate my own copy of Indesign intime, so the demo came in perfect for getting that work out before the deadline!!!:D

I like the idea of free software to students, I'm sure Macromedia did something similar with Flash in the UK a while ago...

Personally I think that creatives are becoming too obsessed with knowing every piece of software available... and worry less about the actual ideas for the work...... It's almost if the software is governing the design now, which is very bad, and I think Flash is a prime example of this...... Flash sites are pretty generic stuff, vector based outline shapes, with cheeseball sound effects, stuff flying in from the sides...... and ********* horrible Intro animations...... Flash sites seem to suffer from the same generic look, and there are very few that really stand out from the Flash norm..... http://www.mtv2.co.uk/ is probably a good demonstration of flash's capabilities..... but very few people are exploring its true possibilities... by coming up with solid ideas.... as opposed to only creating the Flash stuff we have seen before because its the 'IN' look!!!!

I step off my soapbox now!!!!:p

idkew, you´re right!

It would be a VERY good idea for SW-companies
to let students use their SW for free to get them
hooked. Would create great competition.
I really like the cig-example!

I have seen school-licenses, what´s the
deal nowadays? Shouldn´t students get
to use the SW doing their "homework"?

I think the SW-companies are a bit too
greedy. They upgrade SW too often.
I know people that claim Illustrator 1.0
to be the best ever. (needed kb ram!!!)

Of course, updates are sometimes really
necessary, but every 6 months or so?!
I doubt it…

I use some of the fonts to create appropriate academic project pages and maybe a few fun printouts.

I think I will use the Apple Corp. font and maybe Photoshop to amuse myself with a desktop of a chrome or copper powerbook and an advertisement that says it runs at 867MHz.

Don't leave just yet. What are you going to use the fonts that you've found for? Web or Print

Hows the website?

having too many fonts is not fun

i once maxed out ATM, and ms word took like an hour to load >_<

what I usually do is take a font, write something with it, convert it to outlines in AI, and then play with it to incorporate it into whatever design I'm working with. usually I connect letters, straighten lines, ad textures and things....it really depends. i do all web stuff

I would have to disagree with you, iGav. although many people dot he same stuff over and over again in flash, its really a powerful product, and there's lots of good original work out there, its just hard to find he he. two prime examples: the navigation of www.perfectfools.com, the music box at www.subform.com/viragelic, the experiments at www.mjau-mjau.com, www.hi-res.net has some pretty nifty stuff to say the least. yes a lot of the stuff out there is the same, but none of this would be possible without these kinds of tools. I wouldnt say the SW is contolling the market, rather people are more interested in new tricks and gimmicks and don't spend time on design. I would say the people are to blame for the choices they make. if they want to play around with actionscript instead of work on a nice UI, thats their fault.

I went and checked it out, much better! I'm glad you put the navigation links in, it makes the whole site work much more smoothly. When you get the new changes up, post a thread.

Choppaface....:D as I said, it's not flash's fault, I used to teach Flash and Director, and am very much aware of it's capabilities.....

However my statement rings true that the majority of Flash sites suck!! And it's because it's such an easy package to learn, that people are being sucked in by the ease of making things move, with crappy sound and ********* terrible vector outline shapes!! forgetting about the idea and the notion of a strong foundation idea, and then developing animation, navigation design etc because they have applied some original thought to a creative process and are trying to solve a problem!! Not just copying a style!!

It's not Flash's fault!! It is the user!!:D

I love the sites where people play with actionscript or lingo, and get rid of any notion of a eye-candy, these are the best sites, because people are generally pushing the boundaries of the software and it's capabilities into new areas!! www.turux.org is a really good for seeing the capabilities of sound and visuals in Shockwave, little toys and experiments, pushing the boundaries of the software and the language!! They are creating something new and original..... not copying someone else's idea! or visual style!!:D

Oh, is that right! Nothing worse than going to a site and having to look for the skip intro button to avoid the silly animation. Its kept plenty of flash animators with work, though.

Although I agree with most of what you have to say, there is one point that needs to be brought up. What we're seeing with the whole explosion of excess use of flash and eye-candy, is just a normal reaction to a cool new thing. Everybody needs an intro page because everybody else has a cool, slick animation on their site. What's starting to happen more now, is that people are realizing that you really don't need the silly little intro. It serves no purpose. People visiting you site go immediately to the second page, and now you've spent time and money on something that doesn't benefit your site.

Flash as an interactive GUI, however, has a much better future. By subtly using animations, transitions and such you can keep the eye candy but not suffer lack of usability. As Flash matures, I see it as the best option for making interesting, usufull and fun websites. The experiments are cool, but all they'll lead to is more advanced forms of eye-candy.

one question: what is the advantage of flash over director except that it's easier?
