View Full Version : Macs and the way of life

Mr. Anderson

So all these macs and ..... threads, made me realize there was a bigger picture involved. Apple and Macs are a way of life for all of us. How have Macs changed your life? Made it better, worse, easier, happier?

But the a better question would be why?

I'm not sure. I love my macs, wouldn't trade them for a PC for anything. Yet its hard to describe why my relationship with them is so undefinable.

Macs have changed my life, Macrumors has changed my life
cause I would be usually out riding around on my bike doing rails or whatever
but now I'm on my mac either at macrumors on photoshop,
in itunes or just messing around with my computers setup (I still ride all the time though, just not as much as I used to)

Alot of people have said macs are like a cult.....
well it kinda is like a cult we come here and read mac news
we post interesting stuff about macs and we all share our opinion
and talk about what we agree with or don't agree with

like my signature APPLE FOR LIFE

The Mac way of life has been good to me so far...
I use my Mac.com email address for my primary personal account (letting my Hotmail account full of spam slowly die).
I use my TiBook everyday, and my PC occasionally.
I use a Mac at work as my primary work machine.
I am slowly building up a wardrobe of Mac related clothing.

I try to spread the good word about Macs wherever I go...hmmm, maybe it IS a cult! :D

Macs have also changed my life.
Macrumors has taught me MANY new things, and really interesting things that I have never known. Without a mac, I probly would be trying to fix my Wintel.

well i think macs have helped me shape a career path...

as i was in junior year of high school or so i was heading along the family line of becoming an engineer... then my older, mac using brother (we had a mac at home too) suggests going into computer graphics/graphic design...

at the time, the best i could do was some cheesy video titles with director and some strata studio pro stuff, but it was still fun. and i'd not have been able to, or introduced to such a thing on a pc.

so now i'm in film school for computer animation at the best film school in the country in the biggest city in the country... of course i'd never have lived here had it not been for the mac and my brother...

oddly enough, he is a chemical engineer/law student and he's living his life vicariously through my graphic efforts. every week he's offering me a "challenge" with some new software or another to try to make a better image or movie than him.... he's a freak

well I've met my girlfriend from the net on my first Mac....actually dated a previous girlfriend from the net as well...

made friends...found the wonderful world of mp3...

the advent of using computers for creative purposes obviously got me where I am in life as a graphic artist & amateur photgrapher (digitally anyway)...

my TiBook keeps me from hours upon hours of boredom while my girlfriend is away...

when I think of more reasons I'll post them!

Well, when I was a kid, our school had us on PC's and Apple IIgs, so I was pretty much a technophobe... Didn't see what they could do for anyone, so I steered clear. In 6th grade my teacher had a few of us use her ... God it must have been an LCIII? to get online via AOL. I was amazed at the display, I remember thinking "so this is technology!" The next year, moving to the HS buildings, I remember having to save something, and I couldn't get the disk out. Finally I figured out how to eject it... I thought it was the coolest thing, that a disk drive actually ejected the disk for you.

The next year, 8th grade, I knew more about Macs than every teacher and student, save the network admin. The rest, as they say, is history - I was working on their network constantly in HS, and sometimes even with their consent... hehe :D

So if it weren't for Macs, I wouldn't be anywhere near where I am today. I'm currently a simple freelance computer consultant, but with the skills I learned on Macs, I could have any technology career I want... It sounds cliché, but Macs can be the basis for a good education...

:)

everyday in my second hour at school i visit at least 10 mac sites to see what's new

every hour i think of apple at least a few times

i battle with my ignorant pc friends day-in, day-out

first thing i do in the morning and when i get home is wake my mac from sleep

second thing i do is go to macrumors

i've never enjoyed computing as much as i do now... if mac users have formed a cult then i'm proud to be in it

You'll get different reactions from everyone here, but for me, if there were a company that could make a better "whole widget" (hardware/OS combination) with better hardware compatibility, better software compatibility, better price, better seamless integration, and less arsing about required to get everything working, I would not be a Mac user. In other words, if the BeBox had really taken off, I'd probably be a BeBox user. It's just that there is currently nobody offering a better desktop computing experience than Apple. I don't see that changing soon, either. (Unless Apple moves to x86. In which case I might as well just shoot myself in the head, or become an Amish luddite.)

Why doesn't Apple sell their stickers directly I wonder? I mean, it definitely makes them more special that you only get them with the comp...but it sure makes it tough to make the "brand" more visible...

Well, when I first saw a Mac with 5 years old I was hooked...

I remember spending hours in MacPaint having tons of fun... ever since then I knew I had to become a computer scientist, so here I am now finishing my masters...

I also met my boyfriend through my Mac, on IRC... actually, we hated each other before actually meeting in person... it's been 3 years now and we're moving in together this summer ;)

I think Apple is just one of those things I can't live without... If I had a religion, this would be it.

It just frees my mind :)

And yes, I do have an Apple White sticker on my car's back window... my car is white as well, so it all looks great together ;)

some of the best technicians, network engineers for macs, sytems engineers for macs, and even mac network administrators are graphic designers in small companies that can't afford techies or do not feel the need

i worked for one silicon valley outfit, huge company, who's IT dept run by accountants (which is common) saw "no need" to hire mac techies...so the artists, with their goaties and body piercings, became computer hardware engineers by default

of course, the more well funded pc side has techies who studied, ee, el, cs, and math and do tech work without also having to worry about being the company's artists and web designers...boy, are you in for a surprise...he he

btw...and hey jello, be proud to tell people you go to NYU...even us californians admit that you guys have a better film school than even USC or UCLA...and yes, i am a californian but appreciate new yorkers so much that i married one

some film school experts say that AFI is also as good as NYU but it all comes down to what you do with the knowledge you gain...i hope to one day see one of your movies

I am a mechanical engineer who works with geeky engineers all day ( and yes I am one of them). For me, my mac provides me with a creative outlet. I suck at it, but I edit home movies, make web sites, and use the iApps for my pleasure.

One of the main reasons I want to get a laptop is to take my junk with me so I can tell peeps about macs.

yeah, i'm proud... funny thing is, i started out in comp sci originally planning to use it for graphics/effects purposes. after one java class (which was a pain cause the software that came with our book wasn't up to date for mac... ahh!) and a lot of laziness, i realized i wasn't cut out for programming. so i made a run at the film school. they didn't let me know til like june between fresh and soph year and had me hanging because my grades from first semester weren't good, but i picked it up greatly the second... but i got in! and that's really all that mattered. the video i made for my application was quite dumb, but fun(ny)...

as far as seeing my movies... hmm. well, i'm not the greatest film student. i'm only in my first film film class now, just before my senior year, and it will be my last. i'm doing animation/video mainly. ask me about directors, i don't know anything. kinda sad. but my animations are decent. and on that note, i must get back to drawing... (can't learn animation without drawing, even when it's for comp animation... ahh)

ps. there is another person (at least 1) on here that goes to nyu and he/she is actually also into animation.. i have to use my detective skills to figure out who they are. ha

oh yes, i actually am working on getting the things i've done so far onto the web. and at the end of my semester i think the school will transfer my film films to video for me, so i'll get them sometime in the summer. if you actually want to see em, i could let you know when they're up. and where of course.

one thing i've learned, film school might be 'easy' in that there aren't tests or such, but it's tough to be creative on command. try taking a comedy writing class.... it's great when you need to write, and you can be funny. but when you HAVE to be funny... that's a tough demand to fulfill... as i'm learning all too well.

ha! tan? ahh... i guess artists here are different then they were where you were... here we like the pale skinned folk with piercings and black framed glasses and such... not to mention being pretentious and stuck up..

hmm... funny? now? well... i'm too busy drawing. but if you check out zoolander or bottle rocket or a funny movie... you could laugh at that. now THOSE are some funny movies. i seem to write my scripts with the lead always turning out like owen wilson... that's how it goes.

Well that would by ME. So you've figured out who I am, eh? Though it wouldnt be that hard for you to figure out for me I think I might have an idea who you are as well.

I've used my surperior logic and general "guessing" based on appearances. I have on question: Do you spend a lot of time on the 8th floor of Tisch or do most of your work at home?

NOW ON TO THE THREAD: I was into films and animation when I was a kid and THAT is how I got into macs. I'm the opposite of Jello, Ah. (get it, ah is the opposite of ha, which he always says).

I got my mac specifically for video and animation purposes. Then I got addicted. Now I wake up and have to check apple rumor pages...oh well, its better then fighting with windows.

Well, I am just starting out with the computer animation myself. Jello's probably got some better stuff then me.

At our school we learn Maya as far as computers are concerned. But I've taken some traditional aniamtion classes as well. I'll be taking classes for drawing and design, Emotion, stop-motion, storyboarding, life drawing, in addition to the computer. I had to get lots of requirements and other film classes out of the way, but next year is a lot more animation for me.

I'll post a pic of my room I did in Maya...Keep in mind it's the 2nd thing I EVER made with Maya, so don't be too harsh. I need to fix it up a bit more.

I need to convert it to a valid file...will do in a few minutes...

Are you doing Maya on a PC or Mac. The Mac versions aren't as robust as the PC (expantion and plugins). I've been doing Lightwave, which also suffers from the same problem some times, but I love it.

I downloaded the free version of Maya and played with it a little, but I've invested so much time in getting up to speed with Lightwave, that I'll only ever play around with Maya.

Currently I'm working on getting my character animation skills honed. Looking forward to seeing some of your stuff.

jelloshotsrule
Apr 15, 2002, 01:25 PM
yeah, using maya here.

there's also a combo of the traditional with the computerized, as far as using after effects/animo to color in drawings and then time them and such...

i am not a great drawer, so its' a lot of stick figures and such for me on that end. and i did a character last semester on maya, and it came out pretty bad. the rig was just colliding on itself a lot and not properly weighted in the common trouble spots.

i did do an animation that was only turbulence based (some curtains blowing in the breeze) and camera movement, but i think it came out alright for my first maya animation. it's more pleasing to the eye than the character, but less technically advanced. i will probably be putting that one up soon. and maybe the character as well, but it really really is heinous and primitive...

i'm still investigating who this "teabgs" character is...

oh yeah, we use maya on sgi mainly, but also a few nt's running it (much faster, but more complicated to use b/c of networking... our files are on the sgis, whereas we have to copy everything to the pc if we want to use it)

i got the learner's version of maya for mac but haven't messed with it too much. next year my whole year will be devoted to making an animtion (probably within a small group) for 2 classes that are both 2 semesters... one is totally 3D based and the other is just animation but obviously you can do 3D for the project. so they allow you to combine it all into one massive thing (massive by animation standards is probably a few mins. ha) will see.

Ha, back in my school days (92) when I was playing around with 3D animation, if you managed to get even 1/2 minutes worth of viewing is was amazing. All we studied at first was animation techniques, traditional and their incorporation with computer animation. This was a time when Pixar had been getting Oscars for their 3D cartoons - Red's Dream, Tin Toy, and Nic Nac. Very inspirational, but way beyond anything we could do on our Amigas. We did have some access to SGIs at the time, but it was a little limited and most of the stuff you did on them required more coding than interfacing with a modeler or animation tool. Its come a long way since then.

here's a pic of my room....Please keep in mind I had only modeled one other picture before this one and It lost some quality being turned into a JPG.

Now as for the identity of JELLO....You gotta throw me a bone. All I will ask is if you're on the animation floor all the time working, or if you choose to do your work at home instead.

ANOTHER NOTE: We're getting new computers for 3D this summer. The SGI's will be a render farm and we'll either be getting more NT's or possibly macs (if they get caught up with the mac version).

dukestreet: yeah, for our intermediate class it's all about setting up the character, and the animation was pretty short.. mine was maybe 10 seconds.

teabgs: nice picture. i think one of the top things people forget about in terms of power to make an image amazing, is lighting. and the shadows and stuff in your picture are pretty cool. and i find the lighting is the coolest thing i like about my couple of projects... i'll post my same project in a bit.

about the bone... nope, i don't spend much time there. mostly at home except when i'm taking a 3D class or shooting on the lunchbox... i think i should get another bone... most of the TAs are guys, but i don't want to assume.. are you a guy?

cool note about my intermediate class last semester: for 2 weeks my teacher was away getting married, so the lead rigger from Ice Age came and taught us about rigging a character... it was cool. a pretty darn young guy, brilliant... not a teacher by trade, so he went a bit fast. but it was definitely cool to see his name at the end of the movie and say he taught me for a bit... i guess to me it's more important than seeing spike lee being in the elevator with me at school... but hey, that's just me.

Ok, this is going to seem bad, but it's really film related.

Hey, teabgs, is your name at all related to the term teabags from a movie (I swear I can't think of the name - british movie with a little kid)

I think the term related to a male stripper "tea bagging" a patron, and being told that that was not allowed?

Thanks for the nice comments..there is a HUGE flaw in the pic, and Im the only one who has noticed that I am aware of. Part of the bed where the wood brace is attatched to the post, well, theres a metal plate, but its actually floating in mid air out of place...supposed to have screws attatching it to the bed...oh well.

And about Spike lee..I have a friend who tripped him in the building by accident last year. He was walking by and my friend had his feet out and Spike just tripped right over him. :)

I'll see if I can figure out who Jello is without any more help...we'll see. Not too easy a task out of say 50ish students around that level? Maybe less...what do you think my odds are Jello? You have 1/8...

:D HAHAHAHA!! I get asked if my name is from "tea bagging" ALL THE TIME. Well, its not. And also, its not a reference to a movie. It's a reference to something I did when I was at summercamp. It was the nickname given to me from my friends, I used it from then on for games and internet.

You have 1/8...

i didn't notice the floating plate. i'm guessing it's the area of darkness there that's keeping it hidden...

i got in the elevator last year with spike and i just thought "oh hey that's him. he's short." then some other film artsy kid gets in "whooooaaa!" just made an arse of himself.

i figure you'll have a bit harder time. but then again, i don't go in there often so i don't know all the ta's... hmm. not jesse. not ian (not sure he's even still a TA). not... one other guy who's name i forget (he's been there more than this year i'm sure.) i think jason(?) has been there a while. well that's only about 4. but still i have reduced it further. time to hang out by the window and figure it out.. ha. i'd rather sleep... but yeah, you could figure it out. probably my other posts will also help give me away. and if you have a good eye you could pick me out via the ipod... (that's a big bone i think)

Thats nice. I really like the soap and such. Ah, the little subtleties that make it realistic. I'm guessing thats the part you got the most praise for in class...You know, if you'd made the window panes kinda dirty and maybe had a bit of a reflection it would give it a whole new life.

yeah, the key is that it was the summer class with less time and i had a nutty schedule... ha. i lived in harlem, so that was kind of a pain to make the trip too often to work in the lab. also, just less overall time to get the stuff done. and one main weekend i flew out to cali for my brother's graduation from grad school so i lost some time there too.

but yeah, the soap and stuff was good, but really the textures (including the window) would be where i'd work on it... as well as maybe tossing a 2d image outside just to give it some more feeling of being outdoors. i did that in my final animation for intro and it worked decently, of course i had curtains then too... the more i talk about it the more i want to model something cool, using lighting. the cool thing about working in a group next year will be if we are each best at something else (ie, someone for character/rigging, someone for modeling props and texturing. etc). that'd be ideal..

Well now. I think I do know who you are now, though I'm not totally sure...the Whole iPod thing is the tipper. Currently I am drawing a blank on a name...but I think I have seen the iPod in your pocket....couldnt tell, but the headphones looked like it......If I'm correct then I think youre 1) a guy 2)have blond/short hair and 3)you work in the TV Studio (not NYU's but the one on the 12th floor.

Is this correct?

Well, Im getting there. Um, there's no positino ont he animation floor for the summer, sorry. I have an internship @ Noodle Soup, and helping out Matt Sheridan, but I need to get a paying job so I can afford to be here....its so hard to find one these days. Ask matt if he needs more help....Also, you can try Curious Pictures...its right around the corner (lafayette inbetween Astor and 4th....near Blue Man Group)

Nice work guys. The plate is hardly noticable, I would have thought more that you were trying to add more realism by showing the support slightly popping out of the frame, instead of fitting snuggly.

I like the refraction in the water, jello. Good touch.

One thing you can both try next time is use real textures, whether made in photoshop to look real or from a digital photo. It will bring you much more realism. Procedural textures work ok, but they'll not really get you that close. Unless you're going for a cartoon, artistic look.

yeah, i did an internship last semester (started in august or so) and i have no desire to work somewhere over the summer and pay the school for my credits... so that's out. i've talked to some effects houses about it. so we'll see.

curious pictures is an option but i haven't pursued it yet. there are a few freelance things i've had floating around but one fell through and the other seems to be headed in that direction too... ahh

ok, trying to get my final intro project off its cd and...

most of the files work (all the ones at the beginning of the cd) but a good amount of them won't copy. however, some of the ones that won't copy to the hard drive WILL open in photoshop off the disc...

anyone have any ideas of how to salvage these files? once it's a go i'll post it somewhere...

How true....the piece Im doing now is a 15 second animation. It's only suppossed to be 10 but my prof liked it and didnt say anything about the length. IM trying to use more real looking textures for it.

well i rendered it as tiff sequence last summer.

and i gave the output movie from fcp to peter on the tape... and didn't get a copy, but i made a cd of the images.

now they have gotten corrupted i guess (some of them) so i'm having trouble getting the sequence to a movie file. getting there though. it won't be exactly as rendered, but you'll get the idea.

Dude, use fetch and go get it off the SGI network. It should still be there....depending on when you took intro...if it was last summer then I believe it's still there. There are a few different Intro class folders on Dopey's HD.

I must go do work now...I'm here to learn...

here you go

http://gelbin.org/movies/key_west.mov

i'll try to get the character up sometime. but as i said, it's ugly...

oh yeah duke: the assignment for this was something like portray a place or something. the idea was orginally a writer's office, then became a bit more specifically hemingway's writing room in key west. some of the specifics were inspired by pictures of him i found, but not everything of course... ok

tea: thanks for the ftp, at least for the future.... can i get there from home using it too?

Yeah, you can use that FTP anywhere. At least as long as your account is still valid....not sure exactly how long that is. I use it to transfer files to myself that arent related at all to the class.....I dont have an iPod like some people :(

I went scrounging around for my old stuff, but all I came up with was 3/4" tapes, and seeing as how I don't have access to a 3/4" deck, well, my early years will remain unknown, which is probably for the best.:D

However, I have a few WIPs (work in progress) which might provide some entertainment.

flossgordon.com (http://www.flossgordon.com)

I'm reworking the first full script, for episode 9. I'm starting in the middle cause I wanted to make a spoof, so starting at the beginning would require a lot of setting things up. Its much better just to jump into it. That way I can model it after the 1930's Saturday afternoon serials, and start and end with a cliff hanger.

Also MouthWatch (http://www.flossing.org/pages/mouthWatch.html). We put together the little video rather quickly and processed it in FCP. I'm redoing it, using 3D character animation of 'Smiley', the logo. This will be up soon to, I hope. We need to get on the ball with this, because we're asking for submissions by November, and who knows what we'll get. Most likely our friends submitting Flossing Haiku!:D But its fun and keeps things creative.

ha. oddly enough a kid in my film class made a movie about a hand character. it was pretty dang funny. it didn't talk since we're not working with sync sound yet, but how much variety is there with hand characters? ha

from what i saw it looks cool. i'm curious to see the 3D version of smiley...

Its somewhat simillar to the 3D m&m characters. They were also done in Lightwave. I'll post something when I get a sample done.

Lightwave has a pretty good system for facial movement that I'm pretty happy with. And after getting a few books on the subject its not hard to apply the process and take a few shortcuts. Setup is just the hard part. Once that's done, its relatively easy and quite fun.

I dont have the time right now to look at Duke's stuff but I will later today.

I believe that I have figured out the identity of Jello.

OK, here goes...I wont say your name here, cause that destroys the whole anonymous internet stuff, but if I am correct then your Initials are D.B.

Am I correct?

Sorry, I got caught up in other stuff and forgot to reply. It was a good first animation, I really like the curtains. I'm not sure how to do that in Lightwave, I'll have to see if I can. Its a lot better than anything we could have done in '92, that's for sure.

The only thing is that the camera is too jerky, you need to put it on a spline curve or whatever is used in Maya. It just goes from point to point in the keyframes. Lightwave's default is for curves on all keyframing. You have to go in and edit them in the graph editor if you want linear movement.

You had a good mood set, though, I liked it.

yeah, i think that was partially the compression. i mean i did use the graph editor and the first part was just a linear move.

the second part the camera dips, but other than that it was smooth. glad you liked..

Glad you want to see more. I'm going to redo the trailer, probably a couple minutes worth with a lot of action and made up scenes just to practice with the characters. Also the space ships are very cool. I'm not going to post any of that yet, but I will show you some sketches I did way back on the design development of the Cavity Fighter (Floss Gorgdon's ship)

As soon as I have it done, I'll be posting it here, probably in a few months time.
