Despite the download (http://www.macrumors.com/2007/11/08/iphone-1-1-2-firmware-released/) for iPhone 1.1.2 being available since Friday, Apple has just now pushed the update to iTunes, allowing users to upgrade their iPhones to the latest update without having to download the upgrade manually.

As noted before, the major updates in the iPhone 1.1.2 update include:

- TIFF Exploit patched (JailBreakMe.com no longer works).
- International keyboards
- Custom Ringtone section, iToner continues to work.

The UK/German iPhones launched on Friday and shipped with version 1.1.2 of the iPhone firmware.

I tried to install it before but it didn't work for me. If there is one thing apple has taught me is not to piss them off by doing something not sanctioned by apple.

Ok...I had sooooo many problems with 1.1.1, and I'm glad to see many of them fixed. There is one issue that is really bugging me with 1.1.2, though. My camera no longer woks. I get a message " There is not enough room to take additional pictures. Please delete some existing photos."

1. I have 3.3GB free
2. I have taken 6 pictures

In 1.1.1 I had a similar issue, but this was with the iTunes store telling me I didn't have enough space. I guess that saved me about $10, but I use my camera daily. Anyone else???

Thanks

since apple can do no wrong, clearly breaking jailbreak was the way to go. those darn pesky 3rd party dev people trying to make a dime (or contribute to the global iphone community for free) off apple's amazing (and the world's greatest) phone. itoner was left obviously left unbroken since SJ, while appeasing the shareholders and record companies wants to appear tough on profits for apple and the music industry, secretly has nothing but beatles for his ringtones. another example of apple's perfection.

New firmware for the 5G iPod too - version 1.2.2. There's no indication as to what it fixes other than 'bug fixes'.

It's rare for Apple to release new firmware for older iPods; previous fixes have mainly been whenever there's been a change to the iTunes DRM mechanism. Could the iTunes store be releasing some new type of content tomorrow?

That really depends on your perspective and expectations. There are many of us that have really been waiting on this. Also, keep in mind that it's only a maintenance release. You'll have to wait for 1.2 for significant functionality changes.

I do see a slight increase in scrolling speed when viewing my emails, but not sure if that was due to a bug fix or some maintenance done by the installer. I really dig the new battery indicator icon next to the iPhone in the list pane in iTunes. I finally don't have to hit the top button on the iPhone to check battery recharge progress. Nice.

Probably support for ABR encoding.

iPod's have been able to play ABR encoding since the start. Only thing that the new iTunes does is show the real bitrate now, not the target bitrate.

That would definitely be a step in the right direction in my estimation of Apple...

Strangely, my custom ringtones no longer work either. They show up but won't play no matter how I put them on (either through iToner or through dragging/ double clicking the .m4r files into iTunes.

Ringtones. Maybe not the coolest thing in the world, but well needed. (Assuming this wasn't a mistake that will be wiped out w/ the next update). The $1.99 ringtones are fine, but just like you can add your own video to the iPod, you should be able to make your own ringtones for the iPhone.

Wasn't sure about the playback part. Thanks.

It's more than just a display thing in iTunes, though. If iTunes always has been encoded them ABR, then all of my other AAC's would show various bit rates, not fixed as they still do.

if they "lose" to google, it won't be because of being proprietary. You'd be amazed how few people in the "real world" care about customize this and third party that. People want something that "just works," and that's the iphone for you.

Reports say it does, but even if it doesn't, 1.1.2 allows iTunes to now support custom ringtones so you no longer need iToner.

Still, I have no regrets or remorse about buying the application. It served me well for the months Apple denied me the ability.

Okay - just finished. It took about 10 minutes to download and about 7 minutes to upgrade on a mac-mini.

The build is 3B48b and is labeled as a Restore.

In finder, the icon of the .m4r should say ring or buzz or something...

I hope that Apple is working with Google to allow Android applications to be easily ported to the iPhone. I believe Android is going to be far more popular than the iPhone and it will attract many more developers than the iPhone ever will.

Apple should have had their SDK available at the iPhone's intro. Or at least announced it at that point. Valuable ground and mindshare has now been lost. Oh well, same old Apple.

Is this the same guy that said Apple has all the common complaints fixed, but they don't want to release everything at once? I am waiting for an update that actually addresses one of the big complaints like copy/paste or MMS. I'm sure a lot of people have wanted an international keyboard and a wireless way of buying new music, but none of these are the major complaints of iPhone. Unfortunately Apple is not catering to each individual and what they want on the phone. I think for the entire iPhone community as a whole, this is a needed update. A lot of people have wanted multiple language keyboard support and now they have it. The custom ringtone section is helpful too and this time Safari actually is quicker. I am sure eventually some of the big "missing features" will be addressed and when that happens people will just complain about other features they want. It will probably be a never ending circle. I am happy with any features Apple is willing to give us because I was happy with the phone as it was the day I bought it.

I did have the same problem, and here is what fixed it for me.
1) A power cycle of the phone and the bluetooth
2) Put phone back in the dual dock and did a sync.
3) placed the bluetooth in the dual dock
then it was back. :)

Yep, this did seem to help with the bluetooth headset, thanks.

But my custom ringtones that I've made and that have always worked before (using both the 1.02 method and the iToner method) are still not working.

Can someone confirm that they can actually create a new ringtone, make it into a .m4r file and get it into your iPhone with the new update and actually have it sound?

Mine are showing up in the custom ringtone section of the iPhone and in iTunes under the ringtone icon to the left, but they are NOT actually playing from within the iPhone. I normally never have trouble with this kind of stuff, but something strange must be going on if everyone else can actually load and play their custom-made ringtones but me.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Its a demo. Beta - work in progress. Not the final product.

Reserve judgement until its running on final hardware.

Have you seen the Android demo? The spend 30 seconds just spinning the globe in the Google Earth part. Gee I have better things to do than use my phone to spin the planet around a few times.

Navigation on it looks clumsy and they don't even show much typing. It's funny how no one is mentioning the virtual keyboard as a "problem" on the iPhone, turns out most people can type really fast on it. Go figure.

Bring on the gPhone, it looks like a piece of (well you get the idea).

I'll keep my iPhone.

Android = Java. iPhone doesn't have Java. so it won't be a direct port.

arn

Over the weekend, may have been Engadget or the Register - some where - there was an article about the possibility of Java being ported over to the iPhone. With OpenJava this is certainly possible.

Works here. Make sure you don't have the same file in iTunes as .m4a.

I had a .m4a on Desktop, renamed it .m4r and dragged in onto my Library in iTunes. It put it into the Ringtones folder, synced with the phone, and played fine.

Hmm.. They should show up on the very top...

It's working for me just fine for me.

Also, when you're converting MP3 to ACC dont raise the quality of the song since the iPhone speakers aren't good enough to play it, you'd think you'd get clearer sound but you'll end up with fuzzier ringtones. Keep it at 128 KB and don't raise it 192.

It works wonderfully. You run oktoprep in 1.1.1 then update to 1.1.2. Then you need to let iTunes activate the iPhone and run the 1.1.2 jailbreak app: http://conceitedsoftware.com/iphone/site/112jb.html

The 1.1.2 update wipes your /Applications folder, but the other files remain in tact (well, most of them anyways).. regardless, you'll need to reinstall all your 3rd party apps after updating. Everything works nicely like it does in 1.1.1 though once you do :)

I need a bit of help ... My brain isn't workin well this morning... :)

I made a song in Garageband (long ago), I saved it - then imported into itunes. Converted to AAC (by itunes) then saved a copy as a m4a. I drug the m4a vers. to my desktop, changed the format to m4r. Now iItunes wont import as a ringtone (I'm assuming because it's over 30 seconds).

How do I now edit this down? Is there an easier way to do all this (excluding rebuilding the song in Garageband, only shorter)?

THis is what I prefer - to make a ringtone in Garageband - import into itunes as ringtone... that's it. Probably not possible yet (retarded, if it's not) but it would be awesome if it was.... though my brain is a bit borked this a.m.!

Custom ringtones do work with 1.1.2 without hacks on a Windows XP system. Here are the steps.

1. Choose your music or sound (mp3)
2. Use audacity to cut the song to 40 seconds or less
3. Drag the song to itunes
4. Right click on the song in itunes and convert to AAC
5. Find the .m4a song in folder \My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music
6. Make sure you have a folder \My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Ringtones (if not create the folder)
7. Rename the .m4a song to .m4r (you may want to change your computer settings to show hidden extensions)
8. Double click on the renamed song.
9. The new ringtone should now appear in the ringtones list in itunes. Select it for syncing
10. Sync the iphone.
11. Go to Settings\Sound\Ringtone on the iPhone. There is a new grouping called Custom. Your new ringtone should be there.

That was easy. Ringtones seem to be snappier...

No. I wouldn't hold your breath either. I'd rate the chances of the iPhone getting a Dvorak keyboard layout about the same as its calculator doing RPN.

1.1.2 fixes MAJOR latency issues when using Edge. This upgrade is well worth it as the phone no longer hangs when waiting for the network to respond. Last Friday I posted in this forum about the .m4r custom ringtone with the update 1.1.2 and that it now worked again.

I also posted this information in the Apple Forums. It was a test to see what apple's moderators would do. It had over 1500 hits and about 70 posts. And the moderators let it go.

Last night Apple removed my thread and sent me a warning email.

So...heads-up...It is now apparent that the free custom ringtone allowance was more then likely a mistake. For those of you that like this new ability, I would beware of the next iTunes/iPhone patch as it will probably close this again. Do not get rid of your iToner/iPhoneringtonemaker as you will more then likely need them again.

For now the method works great and I will enjoy my custom ringtone "Sounds" and my daughter telling me I have a phone call.

Hope this helps and Good Luck!

RPN is way, way more likely than a Dvorak layout. RPN is a feature of the OSX calculator, after all, starting with Tiger, so someone in Apple must like it. It's true that Dvorak is also available in OSX, but the layout is designed for touch-typing, not two-thumb pecking, and would make little sense on the iPhone.

dunno if this was mentioned, but i also converted my ringtones to mono since the iphone only has 1 speaker. (even if it had 2, they'd only be an inch apart so mono is still the way to go) cuts the file size in half, literally. my 30 second mono 128kbps m4r ringtones are around 240KB.

The QWERTY keyboard isn't better for two-thumb pecking. It makes perfect sense for the people who normally type with dvorak. It's a standard keyboard layout that's available on all modern computers following Apple's lead as far back as the Apple IIc.

Anyway, I can hope.

So I tried to put those ringtones on my phone. And I got all the way up to where the ringtones show up in my iTunes but they wont sync over to my phone. And yes I have the boxed checked to have them synced. Can anyone help

Are they over 30 seconds in length...because I had one at 45, and it did not sync...cut it down a bit and it did (I actually think it has to do with file size, but I do not know the cut off point).

And for the record, Safari still crashes with the iPod...although instead of it cut cutting off, it started to stutter first, then stop playing...progress? Either way, it sucks that still this feature is not fixed.

cant seem to find where to re-name my file in Vista from M4a to M4r.

Put it on your desktop, hit enter (not return) and it will highlight the file name, and change it then.

WHAT HAPPEND IF EVERY STEP HERE WORKS UNTIL STEP 10....
I CANT GET THE CUSTUMS DIRECTORY ON THE IPHONE ?

I when ahead and uploaded the new firmware and now i got I error message in itunes saying "itunes could not connect to the iphone because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the iphone before it can be used with itunes"

i get this error message too but haven't been able to find any way to get past it

in addition to this first error message, when i go to my iphone i also see the following message "Incorrect SIM, Insert an unlocked and valid SIM to activate iPhone" with the option to slide the arrow beneath to the right for emergency calls

i've done some research on the internet to find out how to correct either of the error messages and found nothing for the first message about the passcode. i have found some stuff on the second error message and from what i've read believe i have to downgrade my firmware back to 1.1.1

i've tried to follow the instructions i found but have run into a problem that i hope you can help me with. it's my understanding that i need to use PuTTY to talk to my iPhone via SSH. however, when i enter what i believe is my wi-fi IP address i get the following message:
PuTTY Fatal Error, Network error: Connection refused

I'm not sure what i'm doing wrong - maybe i've got the wrong ip address, thing is i can't get it from the iphone since it's locked - i'm hoping somebody on this site will be able to help me

As an FYI, i should let you know i'm not in the states, i'm in Toronto, so my phone is not with AT & T, it's with Rogers Wireless

Any help that anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated
thanks
