My 5.5 year old 20gb iPod "classic" 4G finally bit the dust. The harddrive makes awful noises, it forgets what is on its HD, and it violently crashes about 15 seconds into a sync. It was a good 5.5 years and it only ended up costing me about ~$4.50/month when aggregated. I'm a piss poor graduate student, so I have no choice but to squeeze every last drop out of any piece of electronics.

I bit the bullet and ordered a new iPod 64GB touch that will be here tomorrow. Good prices on Amazon, eh? It's a good thing that I've been adding artwork patiently ever since the iPod Photo came out. Now, when I sync for the first time, most everything should look spiffy.

So, is there a market for busted iPod 4G's? Would I be able to sell it on eBay? It still turns on, which is saying something. I'd be thrilled if I could get ~$20 for it. What is a reasonable price for such an item?

It's value largely depends upon its condition and what all it is coming with. 4G is pretty old so there is most likely not the biggest market for it. So putting it on eBay you're risking it not selling or not selling for much.

Presuming you had everything (charger/box/cable/headphones etc) you might get 12-15 out of it at one of those electronic trade in websites. Had you not already purchased your iPod touch I would have suggested you simply traded it in for the 10% discount that apple will give you for recycling it. That would have equated to $39 dollars off or so on a 64GB touch.

I'm digging mine, too. It's proved very versatile. Over 1000 songs (including extended trance songs and megamixes), about three dozen music videos, a heaping handful of Looney Tunes shorts for when my daughter gets fidgety, and I still have plenty of room for two feature films and at least three hours of video camera footage.

I've already used it to record video clips at an event at my daughter's school, as a proof of concept. It'll accompany me to Disney in a few weeks, and will be much easier to carry around than my old-school miniDV camcorder.

As many of you probably are, I too am an iPod collector. It's hard to explain the feeling of getting a new iPod, eventhough you know there's no need for it:rolleyes:

...my iPhone is pretty much the only thing that gets use nowadays, but I still find myself trying to find a way to get the next one :D

Here's a thread to that you can creatively show your precious collection. I for one have my collection displayed as such...

3/21/08 EDIT: Some of you expressed interest in the stands my iPods are displayed on. I have some of these for sale if you see this thread: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=446018

3/22/08 EDIT: I've added a pic of my collection up to date and removed the previous picture.

in the picture it looks like that the mini doesn't has a screen...it looks pretty cool:D

btw nice collection and cute stands:)

Note much a collector but since I buy and sell iPods/iPhones on a regular basis I did have (at one point) 40 iPod Touchs in my shop that were being worked on. If I had a picture of all of those it would show you how awesome it looks.

This thread is inspiring to show peoples respect for the iPod generation as a whole. I like the OP's first post with his iPods all on little stands.
I think one day those will be worth a hell of a lot of money if they're all fully working and in good condition.

Not entirely sure what happened to my original picture. My webhost was having some problems so maybe they restored to a backup or something, but alas a new picture as arrived.

The only iPod that is missing is the first generation shuffle. It's missing only because I lent it to my sister and don't really feel the need to have it back. The box is present though. All of these iPods are soon going to be protected with the invisible shield as I have one for every single generation.

All are functional and in reasonable to new condition. I even through a iPod + HP in there to be complete.

The List:
1G - 5GB
2G - 10GB
3G - 15GB upgraded to 30GB (My First iPod, and dear to my heart)
4G - 20GB
4GHP - 40GB
5G - 30GB
5.5G - 30GB
5.5GU2 - 30GB

Mini 1G - 4GB
Mini 2G - 4GB

Nano 1G - 4GB
Nano 2G - 2GB

Shuffle 1G - 1GB
Shuffle 2G - 1GB

As the picture says my iPods are not for sale. If you were asking how much it'd cost to get a collection similar to mine it's really hard to say. The 1st generation iPod is pretty hard to come by now. It's really hard to come by with all of the original accessories and box. That's why MattyMac is a genius for keeping one unused. I go to old off the beaten path electronic stores anytime I see one in hopes that they have one in the Window display or something. A lot of people will say 1st generation iPod but it's really not, check serial numbers using this site prior to buying http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html Also I avoid refurbished iPods. The only refurbed iPod I have is the 2nd gen shuffle.

All of my iPods are in pretty good condition and have the original boxes so I suspect it would cost a few bucks to replace it :) My 2G has just the smallest dent on the side, almost looks like someone hit it with a glass breaker. My 3rd gen iPods side come out just a little from when I opened it up to replace the battery and hard drive. I ended up opening it 3 times, I think that's the only reason you can tell. Watch forums for people selling them and use model number saved searches on eBay and be really picky about what you buy. That's how I got most of mine.

If you're looking for a ready made ipod collection put this (230354608181) ebay listing number into ebay search. 12 ipods all in brilliant condition for $12000. It's been relisted about 3 times so it seems that he might be asking a bit too much. There's also an untouched 1st gen for $600 but it doesn't have the box (item no. 150370660080).

JHC people, that is impressive, ive only got a 4G 20 GB colour (whch HDD works but is on its last legs, completely freezes whenever it feels like), the new 5G 16 GB red nano, the cute (and i think the best), 4 GB 3G stubby nano (which has now gone to a new home) and a 6g black 80GB classic. which still confounds me even though its classified as a "classic" model they won't update the software to the latest. what, the thing is too underpowered to run genius?

this is like collecting plastic bags....

Why does anyone collect anything? It's because for some reason it's enjoyable to them. My personal reason for collecting them is because this is a device that nearly single-handedly changed an entire industry forever. That's pretty amazing. One-day I intended to have them in an office with a little write-up of the history of the iPod. A museum exhibit so to speak.

Some collect them because they think they'll be worth money. I think that's fairly unrealistic with the exception of the first ones. That's already worth money, much more than I paid for mine. One like Matty's that's unused and non-refurbished will be worth a considerable amount.

Okay so I am slowly building up my collection with some pieces coming and going all the time...

Well here is the final collection for awhile... I will list in order of the picture! (top row left to right, then bottom row left to right)

4th Gen. iPod 20GB (black and white screen)
4th Gen. iPod 20GB (black and white screen)
4th Gen. iPod 20GB (bad hard drive)
4th Gen. iPod 40Gb
4th Gen. HP iPod 40GB
3rd Gen. iPod 40GB
2nd Gen. Mini 4GB
5th Gen. iPod Video 60GB (black, bad hard drive)
5th Gen. iPod Video 80GB (white)
2nd Gen. Touch 8GB
iPhone 3G 8Gb

Not Pictured:
1st Gen. Shuffle 512MB (In the wife's gym locker)
1st Gen. Mini 4GB (At my work, silver)

All of it is used, and only two are broken! I just want to have a used, full set up to the end of 2010 so I can put it in a small "museum" plexiglass box and have the "The First Decade of The Apple iPod" I would like them all to be running at the same time. I have no I idea why I want all used ipods, I just want them to show some wear and tear! I am looking for a 1st Gen. iPod right now!
It would be a great office piece!

This collection started with me beeing bored, and browsing ebay this summer, where I found most of my iPods. Before I knew it, I had quite a big collection (to big in fact)

My collection is not for sale. I plan, as you, to probably put it on display somewhere. I think the ipod is gadget of the decade, and it did stirr things up in the music business. (so do Wired and many others).

I dont think the collection will be worth a lot of money, so I dont see any economical gain (unlike this fellow (http://cgi.ebay.com/FULL-iPod-COLLECTION-1st-to-5th-Generation-iPods-NEW_W0QQitemZ230354608181QQcmdZViewItemQQptZOther_MP3_Players?hash=item35a2346035)which has a refurbished 1st gen ipod as the most attractive item:confused: and tries to sell the collection way to expensive)

I can give an advice though to the aspiring collectors out there, buy one of these kits (http://www.radtech.us/Products/IceCreme.aspx), and your collection will shine:cool:

PS: not all 1st gen ipods on ebay, are actual 1st gen ipods. And ipods with the 2nd digit beeing a "Q" is refurbished ipods.

Yes, I used Radtech Icecream on all my ipods, and even though it did not remove the worst scratches, it made a world of difference.

My best tip: always ask for the serialnumber for an ipods. Third digit indicates year of production, 4th and 5th indicates weeknumber. Geniune 1st gen ipods was produced between october 2001 and may/june 2002.

Also always check the serialnumber on this page (http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html) to verify if its a refurb.

I started collecting iPods as a hobby. I bought many of them as soon as they were released by apple but obtained some of the older ones on ebay. Itried to stay away from refurbs and only purchase iPods with the retail packaging (although I did purchase a couple refurbs directly from apple).

I won't be passing them on to any family members. My fear is that the batteries will eventually start to eat them away many years down the road. I've actually consolidated and sold off a portion of my collection over the past few months. Im getting married this year along with potentially buying a house so I need all the funds I can get.

Although I do still have my sealed original First Generation. That one I will be hanging onto for a while or at least until I get a very nice $$$$ offer for it.

I think that you are selling off your collection for some very good reasons :D

I have heard very little of this "battery eating the internals of the ipod" thing that people have been talking... Is that something that effects iPods more than any other gadget or is it the same as all battery powered gadgets?

I began my collection whenever I was working far too much over-time and had some excess funds to spend (in addition to all the money I was investing).

My thought behind it was that this device along with the iTunes store really revolutionized the music industry. I plan to make a museum like display for my office one day. I doubt there will be any financial gain from collecting iPods. With the exception of perhaps the first one. I do try to keep my iPods in good working order by power cycling the batteries now and again. Unfortunately like all battery powered devices they will one day fail to work.

My first iPod was a third gen and I didn't replace that until the first gen iPod touch. So all of the other iPods I have purchased from eBay or forum sites. I've been very particular and only purchased iPods with all of the retail packaging and none (save for a 2nd gen shuffle) were refurbished. I was fortunate and found all of the 5th gens sealed. Since then I've purchased the old iPod as the new ones have been coming out.

Everyone has pretty much said the advice I have given to others over the past. The only thing I will say is that I avoid using the Ice Creme "recovery pad" or whatever it is they call the fine grit sand-paper they send you unless the device is significantly beat up. I do my best to avoid that when purchasing iPods in the first place.

Hi all,

I've been meaning to post some pics of my collection for a while and finally got round to taking some today. At it's biggest I had about 19 but I decided to get rid of some of the duplicates so it now sits at 16 (The 4th Gen Nano is my brothers). The only iPod's that I would really like to add to my collection is the 5th Gen Video, U2 edition and a 1st Gen iPod Touch but I can't bring myself to spend the money lol.
I think i've got all of the accessories for the 1st Gen Shuffle, but if anyone can think of anymore please say. Cheers.

Thanks, i've been collecting them for about 2 years.
If anyone wants any tips on starting a collection. What I do is go on eBay and under the section Mp3 players - Apple. I select only buy it now listings and switch it to newly listed and then add the page to favourites. I then check the top few pages everyday to try and pick the best bargains before anyone else sees them. So far it's worked pretty well.

Thanks for the offer MattyMac but i'm in the process of buying a flat at the moment so my collection is going to grind to a holt for a while :(

The 5th Gen with a bad hard drive for $5, and the Green mini for $10!! I just bought a second generation iPod for $10... It was supposed to have the box and everything for $15 but she could only find the ipod, headphones, charger cable, and the charger block! Plus the screen is a little scratched up! Ended up that her son had used it for awhile back in high school so it is a little beat up but oh well!

Hello! I am new to this forum. Great to see so many fellow iPod collectors out there.

I've been addicted to iPods for several years now, and I have over 20 in my collection (will post details and pics later).

But I had a quick question:

How important is it that iPods in a collection are sealed (original, unopened factory seal right off the store shelf)?

I know most people collect for the pleasure and love of the gadget, but after seeing some of these collections, I wondered if they have to be sealed to have any real value.

Just throwing it out there.

It all depends on what you want to do with your collection! I personally just want to have them on display and could really care less if they are sealed or not! I have recently been looking to find iPods that still have all of their original packaging but they don't have to be sealed! As far as value goes, if you plan on selling them for a bunch of money, the only way that is going to happen is if they are all in the factory seal! But to me my ipods have a high high value because they are mine, not because that is what someone would pay for them!

P.S. - Now post some pics!!

For me its not important to have them sealed. I want to use and play with them, and having one in the original packaging, would kill me:rolleyes:

The important thing for me is to have the original packaging, and the ipod in quite decent condition (and try to avoid refurbs).

And I intend to use these classics, depending on my mood:cool:

When the battery goes bad, Ill just change them.

If you want to make money on your collection, I guess you can get them sealed, but if youre passionate about the ipods, its better without:)

Welcome to the Forum! You ask excellent questions. There are definitely people out there who would want to purchase a sealed iPod.

However, must of us use the iPods and, therefore, keeping them sealed has no value. I use all of mine; especially my 120GB classic :D

Yes, my iPod touch is still sealed...I'm willing to sell it if you are interested in that.

I'd like to keep my 1G for now. Honestly I wouldn't accept less than a couple thousand. Some may think I'm crazy but I think this will be worth quite a bit one day. Maybe even now. Honestly if I saw one on ebay now for $800 I would probably consider buying it myself.

The iPod 5G was used a few times but kept in an invisible shied throughout it's life. All the accessories are still sealed as well and the iPod is MINT beneath the shield which I can peel off easily.

The iPod 3G was only taken out of the packaging and synced etc. Never really used per say. However, the box on the 3G has tears at the spine and isn't in very good shape. The iPod itself is MINT. It's 10gb and also has the accessories sealed including the firewire cable, 6pin to 4 pin adaptor, earbuds, and the ac adaptor.

Hi Psycomanique,
Do you check serialnumbers for your ipods, to check whether they are refurbs, or do you not care?

I know I would be suspicious buying a "new" ipod from hong kong:cool:

If second digit is a "Q" it is probably a refurb.

I try to avoid refurbs, but its not easy, as they are everywhere..

That may not be a guarantee, as refurbs often comes with complete original box.

Woww it's a news for me! I think buy a brand new but they are refurb??? I don't have the serial number with me but when I have look on the site Apple, there is not write that they were refurb.

But many of iPod are refurb even sealed?!? The refurb of actually iPod are special...

Refurbed ipods are almost always sealed, and appear to be new, as they get new back plate etc.

Most sealed new ipods I've seen on ebay are refurbs, but many are for real as well.

Best tip:
Second digit: Q --> refurb
(third digit indicates actual year of manufacture, aka JQ522XXXXX is a refurb ipod from 2005 week 22)
Always check the serialnumber!

Its no problem with a refurb, they can actually work better than the original as all the kinks probably are fixed, but they can be many years newer then the original etc.

For a collector, it could also mean a big difference, as a refurb is probably less worth than a non-refurb.

But in the end, it is definitely up to the collector. I buy used iPods, and always check, to avoid buying a refurb.

As long as the box serial number matches the iPod serial number you are OK.

I think iPodCollector was referring to the actual iPod unit being sealed. The iPod refurbs (units) always come sealed and look brand new, but they never come with the actual retail boxes (like yours). They usually come with a brown or white generic apple box.

In short it looks like you are ok to me!

Enjoy your LEGIT collection!

I did some research (read: google) to find claims for what Im telling. I remember reading it last year, but cant find the exact forum. I have however found 2 sites where this is mentioned. (the "Q" in the beginning of the serial)

Link (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/1170484.html)
Read a little down, and someone mentions it.

Link iLounge (http://forums.ilounge.com/showthread.php?t=207807)
Also mentions the q in the beginning of the serial.

I dont mean to be a wise guy, I might be wrong, but I have read this several places earlier. Klantenservice is not always precise, regarding refurbs.

However, you do have a very nice ipod, but I thought you should know..

I just purchased a sealed (just the iPod, no box or accessories) 1st gen 10GB iPod. The copy right date on the back states 2002, however, apple.com shows the october 2001 date when I enter the serial number.

Did Apple release 1st gen iPods with "2002" as a copy right date?

Like all of you, I want to make sure I have a legit first gen iPod!

Thanks!

Hi Habitus,
A genuine 1st gen 10GB ipod has mechanical scroll wheel, and the serialnumber would typically be U2215XXXXXX (2002 model, week 15)

4th and 5th digit should be less than 25 to prove its a geniune 1st gen iPod.

On the Apple site, it just mentions the generation, which was launched in october 2001:rolleyes:

Apple will offcourse state that this is a first gen iPod, which it is, it just was produced much later as a refurb. (make no doubt Habitus, yours is a 1st gen, but it is a refurb produced in 2006).

Whether its a proper 1st gen depends on the collector:)

I think proper 1st gens was produced between october 2001, and june 2002.

Habitus,
Your ipod was released in 2002 (the 10gb 1st gen was introduced in march, read wikipedia!), hence is it marked with 2002.

The 4th gen I have which is manufactured in 2005, is marked also with 2004, as the b/w model was introduced then. That date does not mean anything with regards to how old the ipod is!

The serialnumber is the best way to know for sure.

Sorry, but that is incorrect.
If you look closely at the picture I published, modelno is M9282LL/A, which is the original 4th gen iPod. The picture on the box is also of an ipod with monochrome screen. This ipod was produced 2 months after the iPod color was introduced, thus is a refurb (which the Q in the serialnumber also indicates).

Apple probably produced many refurb 4th gens in 2004, as it was launched in june 2004, and yours is produced in august 2004.

He means do you have them set out for people to see on some sort of shelf or something like that.

...Or do you have them put away in storage.

The first picture below shows both of my 5th Gen Videos with the one on top with the standard 30GB HDD and the bottom one is my modified U2 version.
I bought a faulty 5th gen online and added the U2 housing. Then I bought an 'iFlash' adapter so that I could install a 16GB CF card. You are able to get a 32GB (and possibly a 64GB) but I don't want to spend that much at the moment. The advantages of the flash drive are that it's a fair bit lighter and has a longer battery life as there are no moving parts (also the flash drive is more durable if the iPod is dropped). So far i've had no problems and it seems to be working well.

Is it easy to convert to flash? Ive never worked on a video before but I have worked on nanos so the video should be easier?

Feb 17, 2010, 03:44 AM
The hardest thing is getting the back off but once you've done that it's really easy. I've done quite a few simple repairs like battery, LCD and logic board, so i'm quite good at opening them now.
The 'iFlash' converter cost £14 and the 16GB CF card was £31 (a 64GB CF card costs about £67).
I also bought an SD to CF converter for £11 and that will allow me to install a 32GB SD card which will only cost £25.
And then all you do is restore your iPod.

I'm looking for what seems to be the rarest iPod. No, not the 1st gen, I already have that, but the Harry Potter edition that was released in 2005ish. I'm a massive Harry Potter fan (sad, I know), and to get that iPod would be absolutely amazing. But to date, I've never seen one on eBay, has anyone else?

I really miss my 1st gen iPod from Jan02. Should have never sold it. :( Unfortunately the little plastic ring around its headphone jack broke and so I wanted to get rid of it at the time. Of course, I also kind of needed/wanted some money to spend on a new and improved iPod :o

I still think the original iPod looked better than any iPod after that. That may be due to the emotional value I'm placing on it though, kind of like CDs you like because they remind you of certain situations in the past.

I have send few questions about this iPod to the seller. It's really a true iPod shuffle just produced for AVON:

"this is real Apple ipod - it was made exclusively for AVON. As you can see i sell AVON cosmetics that's why i am able to get those ipods."

My serial number is: 6V921F178CQ

I hope that the color of the iPod shuffle in iTunes is gold, (if yes, definitly a real iPod shuffle frome apple) and I have seen that it got a warranty from apple.com!

I've actually sold almost all of my older iPods (out of necessity at the time), but this is what I have/have owned:

Currently:
• 30GB iPod Photo (sits on my iHome alarm clock permanently...quit working one day after I had a nano, so I tossed it in a drawer. It was completely non-functional. Maybe 2 years later, I couldn't find the nano, so I connected the Photo for the hell of it and after the battery got the minimum amt of juice, iTunes recognized it and it fired right up! It's name in iTunes was Lazarus after that.)
• 16GB 4G yellow nano (used in the car)
• 32GB white iPhone 3GS (used for everything else)

Past:
• 4GB 1G pink iPod mini (First-ever Apple product. After a year, I cracked the LCD screen in an horrific accident...it was like watching myself bleed as the black goo oozed slowly out of the crack over the next few days. Still worked, though. Gave it to my mom, who used it basically as a shuffle.)
• 6GB 2G green iPod mini (gave to my brother when I got a nano)
• 4GB 1G white nano (exchanged at Best Buy after it inexplicably quit working)
• 4GB 1G black nano (what I got in exchange for the above.)
• 30GB 5G black iPod Video (at least I think that's what it was called at the time--it was the one with Jack Sparrow on the box. Sold on ebay.)
• 80GB black iPod Classic (sold on ebay)
• 16GB 2G iPod Touch (sold when I got the iPhone)
• 16GB 5G pink nano (decided to give it to my mom, so she could give her 2G nano to a friend who's going through chemo...music helps distract her)

I actually had all of the boxes until I moved about a year and a half ago; I convinced myself that it'd be stupid to hang onto them since I no longer had the devices. Argh.

And I'm currently bidding on a 6GB 2G pink mini, just for nostalgia's sake. :)

Rest of the family:

Mom: aforementioned pink nano
Dad: 4GB 3G black nano
brother: 16GB black iPhone 3G

Here we go. My collection is modest, I am a relatively new to Apple products but love my iPods/macs. Hasnt stopped me from buying a lot of them in the past 2 years. I've sold them as I upgraded.

iPhone 3GS (mine)
iPhone 3G (wife)
iPod shuffle 3G Blue (2009)
And as of tonight, iPod Classic 6G 160gb (2010)

Past iPods include a 4gb pink nano, much loved by my wife until she got her iPhone, 2 other 3G iphones and a 5G ipod video

The problem of model number: Maybe because my 4G come from Hong Kong, my 3G come from USA. The old iPod were differents with the continent because the models of charger are not the same everywhere in the world. I think that is the reason of the differents models numbers!

Wow! I just spent an hour reading through all these posts! You guys have some amazing collections. Is anyone interested or know anyone who might have a 1st Gen scroll wheel ipod for sale? I'm not a collector at all but now I want one! Willing to pay up to mid $XXX for it depending upon condition. Thanks so much.

Or if anyone can point me in the right direction it would be extremely appreciated.

Thanks guys and great work with the collections. Wow.

I dont even collect ipods, but people give me their broken ipods to fix and I do.
Some I cant fix so I keep the parts and then with enough parts i've built frankenpods.

Makes you think about the sheer volume of ipods that are out there waiting to become trash...

Anyway, I like having so many cuz I leave one in each car, one in the bathroom, one in my backpack, one for running and one that i take to parties.
And I dont really care if many of them are stolen or break down.

i miss the old wheel on the 1st generation iPods. it was great cuz the wheel was somewhat free-spinning, so if you had a huge long playlist you could just spin the wheel like roulette and let it pick a song for you. the only downside was it made it waaay too easy to accidentally touch and spin the wheel while it was in your pocket, and deafen yourself because the volume just shot up to maximum... and in those days there was no volume limiter in the ipod OS.
Still, i think my original (well, 2nd model original, i got the first 10GB when it came out which was still a 1st gen model technically.) had some of the best sound quality of the ipods ive had... just sounded richer than the later ones, 5th gen having the worst sound quality... lots of audible (to me) hiss in the signal.

For those collectors who have a 1st Gen 5GB iPod:

What is the lowest serial number you've seen?

I think the 44th week of 2001 (i.e. "U2144XXXXX") was the lowest I've seen for production models.

If anyone of you have anything earlier, I'd like to know.

Thanks!

But, Im beginning to doubt if JQ means refurb on all 4th generation iPods. Maybe some day we will know for sure.;)

Well, a little macgyver, and they work:-)

I grinded down the teeth which hook on to the dock connector, and glued small pieces of rubber to them.

Thats about it.

It also makes the ipods with dock connector sit at a nicer angle, so I have modified all my stands this way (except for the black ones).

Apologies if this was already answered and I missed it, but I'm curious to know if a "sealed" 1G iPod means the actual box was sealed, or rather that the iPod within the box was sealed. I bought a 1G iPod back in 2001 (still have it, use it here and there; it works great, though I had to change the battery a while back). Shortly after, I received another 1G. Meant to give it away, but ended up just sticking it in my closet and forgetting about it. Until recently. I noticed that the box itself is not sealed (it's a rather elaborate affair, unlike the new iPod boxes; opens up into separate compartments for iPod and accessories), but the iPod within it is. For the life of me, I can't recall if the box had come sealed and I unsealed it or if the boxes themselves weren't sealed to begin with. So, was just wondering how, exactly, these iPods shipped. I just don't remember either of my 1G iPods coming in a sealed box (and they both came directly from Apple, no one in between). But it's been a while and my memory isn't what it used to be.

The 1G iPod comes with the entire box sealed. I've only seen a couple with the original box sealed. Also, the iPod and all the accessories inside the box can also be sealed but the box is open. The former is obviously harder to find. If you have pics of the 1G ipod which you haven't used and still sealed internally, post some pics. I would be interested in seeing them.

I'm a serious buyer. If I see a product I need, I will buy it. As long as I see the price is fit from my perspective. I bought a sealed U2 iPod for $600, so I figure $650 is a reasonable price for this iPod. As for the sealed 1st gen ipod, I'm willing to negotiate up to a certain point.

I don't have pics, but here's a list of all the sealed iPods I own:
iPod 3G 20GB
iPod Mini 1G 4GB
iPod 4G 20GB
iPod U2 20GB
iPod Photo 40GB
iPod Shuffle 1G 512MB
iPod Mini 2G 4GB
iPod Nano 1G 2GB
iPod Nano 1G 1GB
iPod 5G 60GB
iPod Nano 2G 2GB
iPod 5.5G 30GB
iPod Shuffle 2G 1GB
iPod Nano 3G 4GB
iPod Classic 80 GB
iPod Touch 1G 8GB
iPod Shuffle 2.5G 2GB
iPod Nano 4G 16GB
iPod Touch 2G 16GB
iPod Classic 120GB
All the current models as well

The reason I want the iPod 3G 15GB is that it was one of the original 3G's. Once again, I am a serious buyer. If you don't trust me, put the iPod on eBay with a reserve of $650 and I will place a bid of $650.

Given your impressive collection, I believe you are indeed a serious buyer.

The $1,400 you proposed is only for a 1G with the box opened and only the iPod itself sealed, right? Technically, I do not consider that a "sealed" iPod. Factory sealed means that the entire box must be sealed, exactly how one would find it at the retail store shelf - brand new, untouched...

Now, I wonder how much would you pay for a completely sealed 1G (if you could find one)? Your price quote above reminds of the saying that collectibles are only worth what the next collector is willing to pay.

I don't know how many truly factory-sealed 1Gs there are in the world, but I suspect that one would be worth several thousand dollars...No?

Let's hear what everyone thinks: How Much Is a Factory Sealed 1G worth?

Apr 7, 2010, 12:22 AM
Yes, the 1G iPod I offered $1400 for has everything on the inside in original packaging (iPod, FireWire, EarPhones, etc.). As for the completely sealed 1G iPod, I would pay approx. $3000 or more, depending on the situation. I would only buy an item like that in two situations: face-to-face transaction or public auction (eBay). Personally, I would fly to meet someone who wanted to sell it face-to-face.:) I've only seen one on the internet and it wasn't for sale!!!

I would be willing to sell you my sealed 1st Gen. All components sealed on the inside. I even have the original shipping box with matching serial number on the brown box! There is no cellophane around the box. Honestly I don't think the first gens ever came with a seal around the box as ALANDRAFTS was mentioning. This would need to be confirmed somewhere however. Nope, the 1G iPods were definitely sold in factory sealed boxes (it wouldn't make sense otherwise, since the gray inside box would be fall out of the white slip cover).

Just found this thread, very impressive stuff... it's good to find myself in the company of other like-minded Apple Nerds. :-)

My iPod collection is not terribly impressive... although I do have some decent ones. My favorite prize is my first-gen iPhone, the 4GB model... I have an immaculate one, with the original box and all the goodies still inside. I see the O.P. also has a very nice first gen iPhone in his very VERY nice collection on the first page. I will photograph my rag-tag little collection tonight just for shiggles. :D

My iPods include:

10GB M8737LL/A... it's the one that looks like the first ever but is actually from 2002

2x 500MB 1st gen iPod Shuffle

3x 20GB June 2005 (M9282LL/A)... they're all sick though. Broken screen, bad hard drive, bad logic board... I'm planning on breaking them down and see how many good ones I can piece together some day. :)

And I've got 4 iPod Touches, various gens and states of functionality.

Like another poster, I've given away several of my iPods to kiddies and family members who have admired (or pretended to admire) my Apple hoard... errr, "collections"

You guys have got me curious, so I'm going to go dig up my boxed 1G and have a look. I really don't recall this shipping in a sealed box. Everything inside was sealed and the outer box/cover was rather snug - I think this just might have been how it shipped. I will tell you that having worked at a major toy retailer in my youth, it is extremely EASY to shrinkwrap a box. Frankly, I'd feel a lot more comfortable seeing everything sealed inside than getting a box that may or may not have the original wrap and thus may or may not actually have anything of value inside. Hate to be a cynic, but people know a collector won't break that seal. So they'd never see what was really inside. Anyway, I'll find the iPod and try to post some pics.

Hey guys,

I found these photos on Flickr:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/epytwen/429919201/in/set-72157600015008269/

It looks like these were taken on (or about) the launch date for the original 1G iPod back in the fall of 2001.

It shows a stack of SEALED 1G iPods ready for sale at the Apple Store. Look closely and you'll see the price sticker on the shiny factory seal.

Notice how there was no crazy line of people wanting to buy them like they did for the iPhone and iPad. iPods had a relatively "quiet" launch, focused mainly on Apple hardcore fans.

If my recollection is correct, Apple only sold over 350,000 iPods in the entire first year, which is what makes these 1Gs so rare (and collectible).

If I had a "Hot Tub Time Machine," I'd go back to Oct 2001 and buy all of these sealed 1Gs and keep them unopened! Ha!

Well thank you but I think you quoted the wrong person! You might have meant Psykomaniaque because he does have an extremely nice collection! You have quite the collection yourself! I actually have two of the shuffles, what I meant that the shuffle was missing from the photo! What I do need is the iPhone 2g, and a first generation ipod touch!!

Are you looking to get it new? If not, I will be happy to keep my eyes open for you!

No, doesn't have to be new! To be honest, there's probably not a new Harry Potter in the wild anywhere in the whole world! Thanks for your help.

It could be that the 1st gens that sold in stores had the cellophane and the ones that shipped had no cellophane...
