View Full Version : How would you advertise Panther?

What slogans would you use to advertise Mac OS 10.3 Panther?

Apple used this one for Jaguar:

"Stunning, Cunning & Always Running"

I would put a steak in a Windows XP box then let a real Panther tear the box apart. No dialog at all just the sound of the panther shredding the box and growling. Simple closing at the end. Jeff Goldblum says: "Mac OS X Panther edition now available."
Closing frame of balck background w/ Apple logo.

Black screen. All you hear is heavy animal breathing. In the black screen, you can slowly see panther skin pattern appear. 25 seconds later, Apple logo.

good thinking guys;

i like the idea of seeing a panther tearing or chewing.

how about a superimpsed apple logo on the panther, rather then the apple logo as the closing frame

There is a jaguar [car] commercial showing a lot around here; in which people are in an art gallery looking around, a lot of white cleansliness look, and a jaguar runs past them. then they fade out to the car pitch. heh i wanna see something like that :)

Look out for PETA. They'd go freaking nuts ;) You've got my vote though with an addition:
The longhorn has the MS logo on its hide and as the ad fades out a shred of the windows logo falls in above the camera onto a black background and a Panther Box falls down ontop of it with a matalic clunk sort of like the built ford tough logo ad a while back.

The panther ripping up a windows box is a great idea, and the heavy breathing and fade to black would also be awesome. I think the key is emphasis on power and speed, stability is implicit when the Apple logo appears on the screen.

or... Apple could just release it quietly and let it sell itself, I'd buy it the day it came out.

I wonder if Apple will stick with the "above it all" attitude that they've been using, not even acknowledging that Windows really exist or really is a problem. A panther ripping apart a longhorn box would be more antagonistic to Microsoft than they have been.

i like that idea.
but here's mine...
a black screen fades into a panther sitting in an all white room. it gets genie effected into the panther box.

in the background, Jeff Goldblum saying
"Yep, all of that power, in that little box.
The next big thing, from Apple."

Black screen. Slight growl...suddenly a panther rips through the blackness jumps right in font of you, then slowly walks around for a sec, lies down; and licks his paw.

Then the Apple logo fades in (with apple.com at the bottom). Spend about 80 Million advertising this, and have black posters with panthers and apples all over the place.

How about a panther biting a short, nerdy, middle-aged billionaire with glasses directly in the ass?

Or what if the panther was Steve Jobs walking around in a tight black, velvet cat suit, and he was doing the biting.

I think you guys all have a common problem here: you're making the ads as confusing as Apple would make them. Personally, I think that Apple should make an ad that shows what Panther can do and tell the general public what the product is and why it is better. Maybe they could do something like this:

Shows a computer and a little kid at it. The mom comes in and says that she needs her digital photos or movie edited. The kid pops up iMovie and iPhoto and quickly makes a huge improvement. And here's the kicker: words start flashing on screen of what OS X can do, slowely at first, then getting faster and faster. Simple phrases like Video Editing, Photo Improvements, Windows Compatability, Video Conferencing, Audio Conferencing. The words get faster and faster until they are no longer readable (meanwhile exciting music is getting louder to get the viewer's blood pumping) then a blank white screen with silence. Then the screen slowely fades in "A million uses and counting." Then "Panther, The Newest Ground-breaking Operating System from Apple." Fade to the logo (maybe that new cool looking one.)

So what do you think?

but after taking a minute to really think about it, i started to like it. If nothing else, what has undoutably brought us to love apple products is it's innovation, and most importantly its simplicity. I have always loved the the "think different" slogan from apple. Although i could be wrong, i think originally apple wanted to make they're commercials different and have them appeal to those of us in society that do "think different". However, i guess if they want to advertise that their new product is still different, a different type of commercial must be released, commercial that will appeal to everyone. This change has already began with the "Switch commercials", telling everyone how simple a mac really is. Now it's time the world really saw how easy apple products are to use. A new Processor, a new OS, a New Logo, and a new image.

And all though i would love to see a panther tearing a windows box to peices, it only says it's more powerful, not simpler.

Ps.

I love the "Freestyle walking" video, bought back some good memories of my early highschool days ( which really wasn't that long ago, just seems that way)

That's where that slogan came from. I didn't think that I was that clever. ;)

My commercial idea is a bit cliché, but there's a reason for that, those commercials work. I'm not saying that I don't like Apple ads, it's just that they don't make sense unless you already know what Apple is talking about. I just think that Apple needs to go a little more mainstream sometimes.

However, Apple does make some rocking ads. I really like the "Here's to the crazy ones" ad. That one almost brings a tear to my eye...:)

P.S. Glad you liked the video.

don't think it to cliche, like i said, after thinking about it your point started making sence, mainstream appeal to larger audiance, apple wants more users they have to making something that appeals to everybody, not just apple users.

The kid commercial idea is good, but its the kind of commercial Apple's target buyers change the channel during. If Apple is all about innovation, why would they want to have an AOLesque advertising campaign (no offense intended, but the commercial you pitched immediately reminded me of a lot of old AOL commercials).

I'll admit that a single clip of a Panther would be too ambiguous, but Apple needs to do something weird.

You're right, that is quite AOLesque. But think of it this way, AOL is probably one of the crappiest, yet most successful ISP's out there. Just think of what Apple could do with a great product.

I dont think it'd have to much emm$ stuff in as they wont want to get them to react too badly and pull Office. It's long over due having an ad showing the OS it's self, how easy it is to use (show iLife, 2-d transparent chess, the genie effect, the welcome screen as posted in macbytes at the start maybe) and how beautiful it is, especially as people are used to how ugly win 98/2000 is and even uglier xp is with its kiddie primary colouers and big ugly chunky menu's...I hate the xp default colour sceme anyway. All this action could be on the sceen of an iMac, where the screen looks away at first abd it swivles round and down a bit as if the mac is looking at the cam, and the cam moves in so as to only see the screen and not the computer.

The end of the add could be having a Quicktime window open and the cam zooms in and on it is a panteher where you can see its jet black fur and it quickly zooms into its eye, which glints (cats eyes are really cool) and maybe see the refleckion of an apple logo in it (ap[ple of my eye ;)) of course the the jag would purr at the delight of os x ;)

Commericals should catch people's attention, not show what the product can do. You can't really show features in a 30 second spot... you just have to be memorable enough and impress people enough that they want to find out more.

How to advertise Panther:

Travel to your nearest zoo and ask for the manager's office. Inform him that three Longhorns have been released from their cages. While he rushes to the scene, sit in his office chair and plug in your Aluminum Powerbook into the nearest ethernet cable. Run an Applescript that broadcasts everything on your screen throughout the zoo...

Reboot and type in fsck -y for every time a longhorn squeals, a mount -uw for every animal humping, and an emacs command for every rattling of metal cage bars.

Run a top command for every time you want to record the number of visitors, and an ls command to broadcast inventory of parrots left for sale.

Don't forget to hack into UNIX and add a command for Kill Bill, in which all the gorillas will let loose on any multi-billionaire corporation leaders with the name "Bill."

How about an OS X desktop with a Preview window with the Jaguar X logo icon centered in the middle. Suddenly Expose causes all the Preview windows to arrange and it's the X logo from all of the OS X versions and the cursor selects the PANTHER X logo bringing it to the front.

Jeff Goldblum says something like "Using features like Expose, Mac OS X Panther lets you EXPOSE the power of your Mac." or something similar.

how about jeff goldblum being torn to pieces by a panther, a la roy from vegas, but graphically enhanced with the power of adobe creative suite running on a dual 2g G5 to make the blood and guts ever-more-realistic?

to my mind, that would accomplish two paramount aims of any decent commercial advertisement for an apple product, featuring jeff goldblum:

1. it would hold the viewer's attention down to the closing punchline (yet to be determined, of course); and

2. it would feature jeff goldblum being dismembered by a wild animal.

while the first of the above accomplishments would benefit primarily the corporation, it could be argued that it benefits consumers who are swayed thereby to purchase the superior product, namely, panther 10.3. on the other hand, the second accomplishment needs no further justification, it being of great benefit to society as a whole.

jeff goldblum was all right in the films he appeared, most notably earth girls are easy, but he is definitely not cool; not even in the "cool geek" sense. he's a total gonad.

all of which explains why i'm not making commercials for apple. ;)

It'd have to be a hilarious commercial. Look how successful the Budweiser ads are. How about 2 guys on a bench. One guy with Panther on a Powerbook (or iBook) and then the other guy on a centreno. Have the mac user glare suspiciously at the pc user, then have him press the command key (open apple). Then have a huge apple fall out of the sky and pummel the pc user into the ground. Fade to black and with Goldblum narrating "Hundreds of new features in Panther, this isn't one of them."

Or just have a Panther ripping apart a Bull (though most people are unaware of Longhorn)

I'm bored and stuff, so I'll post my idea.

If you've seen the fantabulous movie "The Jerk," you'll remember this scene. :)

Have some Mac geek dude waiting outside his house or something. FedEx pulls up. He runs to the truck, jumps in place, rubbing his hands, waiting for the delivery man to get out. Grabs the Panther box from the delivery man's hands, knocking him down along with all of his other packages. Man jumps around, holding up his Panther box shouting "The new OS is here!! The new OS is here!!" Then, the camera does a close up on his face, and the man says "Things are going to start happening to me now!" Then, you see a hacker or virus maker or something trying to attack the dude's Mac with Panther on it, but he can't get through.

I have no idea what the voiceover would be, but if I were the CEO of Apple, I'd make this commercial. Cuz it rocks. :)

If Apple did a Panther advertisement that lasted for a minute, they might be able to pull off an "informative" commercial. However, given that Apple's commercials almost always last for only 30 seconds, I would rather that Apple goes with it's traditional, minimalistic, white-background style commercial that keeps the viewer hooked just enough to go and visit Apple's website to find out more about Mac OS X after they watch the commercial.

Schiffi's funny suggestion (about a PC user being pummeled by an Apple from the sky), or bennetsaysargh's suggestion about genie-effecting (is that a verb, now?) a Panther into its box are great suggestions (IMHO) for commercials that don't specifically mention Windows.

I think Apple should go for the gold, though, and do something with a panther tearing up a longhorn bull, or maybe they could just reuse the WWDC footage of the panther and the longhorn. :P Take on Microsoft with all the cylinders firing! :)

A black background with the Apple logo (new one) in the middle for about 5 secs with nothing else (no V/O). Then a voice says: "The new, Mac OS 10.3 from Apple" about half a second after the words "Mac OS X" fade in under the Apple logo in the new grey on the website then as he says 'Apple' the words change the "apple.com/macosx" and then he says "it's that simple" fade out.
