View Full Version : Macworld San Francisco: Covered Banners, Early Shipments

MacRumors

Many bloggers and media (including MacRumors (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/01/13/arriving-in-san-francisco/)) have started to descend on San Francisco for Macworld Expo 2008. SetteB.IT managed to take (http://www.setteb.it/content/view/3256/2/) an extensive gallery of photographs from the expo floor, including Apple's floor displays which were covered in their usual black tarps:

http://images.macrumors.com/article/2008/01/13/014724-mwsf08sabato35_300.jpg

They even managed to get a blurry photo of a presentation, which appears to be showing GarageBand:

http://images.macrumors.com/article/2008/01/13/014725-mwsf08sabato37_300.jpg

Full gallery available: Part 1 (http://www.setteb.it/content/view/3255/2/), Part 2 (http://www.setteb.it/content/view/3256/2/).

Meanwhile, MacNotes.de posts (http://www.macnotes.de/2008/01/12/good-night-from-san-francisco/) their gallery of Macworld Expo photos. They had arrived at the Apple Store as they were unloading a shipment on Friday night. One of the packages was marked "Visual Merchandising", presumably for Tuesday:

http://images.macrumors.com/article/2008/01/13/010146-visualmerch.jpg

Meanwhile, the "Something's in the Air" banners have generated an enormous amount (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=412600) of speculation about what Apple might be introducing at Macworld. Johncarync points out (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=4738747&postcount=705) the banners Apple has posted the past few years (Life is Random, iPod banners, The first 30 years were just the beginning.). t0mat0 compiles (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=4738814&postcount=714) all the varying possibilities discussed in the 800+ responses. There has been suggestion, however, that it is simply a hint to the name (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/01/06/thin-macbook-specs/) of the upcoming thin portable.

I don't know, but notice the yellow band at the top of the garageband window - that's what you get when you set your loop area to make a ringtone... he might have been showing off how easy it is to make a loop or your own ringtone from GarageBand.

It's the most simple answer indeed but note that you will always use the loop function as otherwise you will need to compose an entire song to playback. Don't think SJ will do that effort :-)

i just realised after looking at the blurred picture of Garage Band (BTW what is the app below it? new app?) this will be the first time the keynote demos will use the retail version of Leopard with the slightly less translucent menu bar and the space desktop as WWDC06 and WWDC07 used the developer builds of Leopard. i wonder how it will go? hopefully therell be no bugs or crashes!

"Something in the Air" ???

The rumor I'm starting is that Apple has developed a new application/hardware combination to enhance their iLife suite.

It will be called iSmell.

It will add olfactory enjoyment to the visual and sonic pleasure we already derive from our Macs.

Sales will be slow, mainly owing to the shameful body odor connotation of the iSmell name.

Looping a section of a song has always been a part of Garage Band, way before ringtone support came along.

is it as simple as an update from the apple site.

10.5 costs $129 at the store with no discount. With discounts such as through a school affiliation it can get significantly cheaper. Then once you've bought 10.5. every 10.5.x update after that is free.

Also if the date you bought your Mac was within a month of the release of leopard 10.5, then you get it free if you just ask them for it.

Imagine how good that would be, and if theres any airline employees on this forum id check out this idea because this could go places.

Let me speculate: intuition has me believing someday, though not in the near future, if and when Steve and the boys and girls at Apple in Cupertino, California team up with another one of the big boys (http://www.research.ibm.com/quantuminfo/) and focus upon the goal of setting a generation of youth to the quest for creating, inventing computer systems mimicking biological cognition, ... isn't this the type of revolutionary, stupendous and "changing the course of history" endeavor we expect the mind of the brilliant Steve and his crew at Cupertino to foist upon the world?

Apple is going to announce a social network aspect to their new iTunes store which allows bands to upload music and sell it, and for iTunes members to become "fans" of bands and talk about which bands they like.

They will release an update to iLife which makes it the ultimate package for getting your band up on the store, so iWeb will come with a template which allows you to customise your band page and then after recording the song in Garageband you can upload it directly from the app.

This still of Garageband will be the part of the presentation where Steve Jobs and JayZ show off the new iTunes and show how easy it is to upload a song from Garageband and start selling it instantly for 99C a time.

I could see Apple entering the eBook market with books sold on iTunes. You could read them on your current iPods or get the dedicated eBook reader which is basically an pocket book sized iPod touch with an e-Ink screen. Swipe to change pages, just like it were pages in a book (save the finger licking maybe). Have a dedicated switch for backlight (e-Ink is easy to read without backlight). Have it display (and search) PDFs, basically a slimmed down version of Preview and maybe TextEdit for quickly taking notes with the touch keyboard.

The best theory I read regarding the slogan will be AIR.

Go to Adobe website, check out AIR.

It's a new way to deploy RIA to any device and best of all, it's platform independent. So, that somethins in the air means nothing else but OFFICIAL AIR SUPPORT FOR iPHONE and iPodTouch.

That Something is nothing else but platform independent Apps downloadable to your phone.

Btw: The GarageBand shot is part of the OS X demo video, if you ask me.

- e-Ink display
- switchable backlight
- syncs via iTunes
- displays eBooks, PDFs, Pages documents, etc. all in black and white
- multitouch interface (ping to zoom, swipe to scroll and change pages)
- take notes with touch keyboard, basic drawing (shapes, line too)
- scientific calculator (plots graphs too)

Come to think of it, this would be great for high school students.

Here's my totally random speculation based on absolutely nothing:

What if Garageband was being used in conjunction with some sort of video game in the Guitar Hero/Rock Star vein? Hasn't Apple been making a slightly bigger push towards the gaming market in the past two years? Those type of games are huge right now and maybe Apple is going to try to ride the momentum. Then again, Apple is more of a trend-setter than a follower.

I'd be perfectly happy if they offered the color in all three configurations. It just doesn't make sense to me why they don't do that.

It's not that they "can't" do that. It's that they "won't" do that. It's all about branding and product differentiation.

I'm betting that the new slimmed down MacBook will have an always on connection to the internet. How could they do this you ask? Lets see, partnered with at&t, so why not put a cellular access chip in the new macbook, or all the macbooks, and let you connect to the internet via at&t wifi or at&t cellular via a cell plan you can buy. Either way it's an always on connection, it would fit in with the "Back to my Mac." Take your ultra portable with you, and go back to your files on your main machine over a secure connection whenever you need to. Something's in the air, and it's changing they way you use your computer. Where do I sign up to get rid of the tethered connection, or the USB dongle. Neither of which work well. Don't want to use it, no problem don't put a SIM in it.

im calling something nobody's expecting, like apples version of the amazon kindle, which would be over one million times more attractive than amazon's.

That would be the updated Newton or eMate, which people aren't expecting until Fall in time for the new school year...

As far as the Garageband thing - they're probably just testing the projector setups. I can just see them now - "let's launch Garageband and start a slew of massive rumors.."

cornopaez

'Something in the Air' is definitely related to this press release - it has to be:

http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2006/nov/14ipod.html

That's a good call but I think that iPod integration is not keynote material.

If it has something to do with wireless, it better be big... expectations and hopes are really high. But then again, the banner might just be misleading. Last year's didn't say anything about a phone, although it hinted something had been brewing for quite a while... I like the idea of Google and Apple teaming up for the auction of the spectrum. Laptops, desktops and what-nots with integration to whatever network those two could build would be really cool. "Air" then takes a new meaning.

Looking forward for my second MWSF since a MR regular :D Yippie!

I wonder what they are doing with Garageband, any other year I would have thought that it may be the next version, but they updated late last year so i don't think there will be a new one.

My guess...you will be able to send your independent podcasts, music, lectures, or anything you create directly to iTunes Store and you will be able to sell them through iTunes Store.

Second guess...you will be able to add music to your iWeb pages through Garage Band. Sounds for buttons, background music, page transitions, sounds effects, etc.

Third guess...We are getting Voice Recording on the iPhone. They will show how you can edit it in GarageBand.

If the Expo next year is January 5-9th then the keynote would be on the 6th.

Which is less then two weeks after christmas. Most stores say that people can return any products they bought in december, as late as two weeks after christmas.

That means anyone thinking that a new computer or something will come out at Macworld, they can buy it in december and if it doesn't come out then they are happy. But if it does then they can return it, as long as they made sure the store they bought it from has that policy.

Peace

something in the air + ipod ads = iphone 2

there is a lot of other reasons to defend this standpoint like:

biggest of which is that apple must have known that saying something in the air would get peoples hopes up and they dont want to disappoint and lower stock price

they need a new model if they want to sell 10 million by the end of the year (most people who will buy one probably already have)

there are a million other reasons but think about it
i know it is wishful thinking but still...

what if the ultrathin rumours are more like a remote display - with limited onboard storage that works with your desktop. On the go it uses a simpler interface like the ipod at home it allows you to use a vnc type client, optimized to have function to your main machine.

The price point could be low, between the ipod touch and the lowend macbook...

in the air could be the connection to your main machine.

Just a thought

It looks more like a red lining on the curtain to me, look how it bows in the middle with the curtain and a black line can be seen accross where it sags.

Yeah, thats what I thought.

I love that idea, just like apple tv can access stuff on your main machine, why not take the concept a stage further. You could even have access to other macs or pcs, given you have password etc. Whilst we need more storage to hold our digital lives, why not detach it from the portable and sit it in your home/office!

No, it's not coming from a 20" or 23" LCD - it's coming from a projector...

He's commenting on the source resolution you dope. Just because the projector scales the image, doesn't mean it doesn't retain it's layout.

For presentations, usually you can use a lower resolution so that more people can see the app running.

I'm in charge of projection systems at church and have a front projection system at home for my home theater.

Not bad for a dope....

Well anyone that knows a thing about a quality presentation knows that you don't set the projector to anything but it's native resolution.

Head of the AV club at your local church. Let me step aside grand wizard. I guess projecting on a screen 100 feet across doesn't allow more people to see an app running.

Hi all,

Does anyone know if there is going to be some sort of live feed for Mac world out there? If you mean the keynote presentation in an hour, there will be live coverage of the Macworld keynote, with still photos, at MacRumorsLive.com. A QuickTime video of the keynote will be available later in the day at apple.com. The details are in this article (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/01/07/countdown-to-expo-one-week-away/).
