I find the Dock looks best if you alternate icons in the pattern: square, circle, square, e.g.

Finder (square), Dashboard (circle), Mail (square), Safari (circle), iCal (square), iTunes (circle), iPhoto (square), Quicktime (Circle) ...

That way the icons don't look crushed up against each other. How do others organize their Dock?

In the order I use the apps the most, left to right.

Mine are basically arranged from web stuff (browsers, Mail, iChat...) to creative stuff (iWeb, iPhoto, Lightroom...) to productivity stuff (MS Office, iWork...)

Ah, the good old OCD pattern... Ok, I'm kidding but what do you do when you get to Adobe CS3? The icons are all square

this is why Apple makes the default dock use this order (except for address book coming after safari and quicktime not being in the default dock anymore)

mine is arranged similarly to the default dock except for a few apps added and removed :

finder - web stuff (mail, safari, adium) - calendars and contacts (address book, ical) - media & photos (itunes, iphoto, photoshop) - productivity (iwork, text edit) - paralells - feature icons (spaces, TM) - system (activity monitor, system prefs).

yea i dont have an order.... lol

finder, dashboard, appleworks, itunes, idvd, imovie, iphoto, quicktime, garageband, ical, parallels, adium, activity mon, ipulse, boinc....

lol thers about 5 circles in a row there..works for me but

I do it by color.
It goes l iike this with my custom icons: Finder, Mail, iChat, Garageband, Firefox, iTunes, Microsoft Word.

I does it by app category:

(left to right)

System (Finder, Dashboard, TM) - Internet (Mail, Safari) - Media (iTunes, iMovie HD, iMovie 08) - Work (Pages, Keynote, Numbers, Schoolhouse) - Creativity (Photoshop & Illustrator CS3, Cinema 4D, Coda) - Communication (Adium, iChat) - Terminal

Works well, and I cant stand a bad Dock layout 😱
