View Full Version : New MacBook Pro's Appearing in Retail Inventory?
MacRumors

http://www.macrumors.com/images/macrumorsthreadlogo.gif (http://www.macrumors.com)
Last week, we'd heard an unconfirmed report that three new MacBook Pro models had appeared in Best Buy's inventory systems. Some inventory screenshots (1 (http://images.macrumors.com/article/2008/02/03/002910-1mbp_800.jpg), 2 (http://images.macrumors.com/article/2008/02/03/002845-2mbp_800.jpg)) we received today appear to confirm this earlier report, showing off the upcoming $1999 price point MacBook Pro (name cut off in image).
Information found in early inventory appearances, however, is difficult to rely on, as many of the details may be "best guess" placeholders only. For what its worth, these new SKUs come with the exact same price points as current MacBook Pros ($1999, $2499, $2799) and show an in-stock date of February 10th, 2008.
This date adds to a laundry list of other possible dates (Feb 5th (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/01/27/early-2008-macbook-pro-whispers/), Feb 12th (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/02/01/macbook-pro-launch-february-12th/), Mar 17th (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/01/28/claim-of-a-march-17th-macbook-pro-release/)) that have been trickling in (http://page2.macrumors.com/) on our Page 2 (http://page2.macrumors.com). Unfortunately, this new date is likely an estimate, but does reflect expectations (http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#MacBook_Pro) of an imminent MacBook Pro release.
Though we aren't familiar with the workings of Best Buy's inventory system, we presume they have some reason to believe that the systems are coming. In contrast, Amazon notoriously (http://www.macrumors.com/2007/01/04/iwork-07-and-ilife-07-on-amazon/) posted placeholders for iWork '07 and iLife '07 ahead of Macworld Expo based purely on speculation. Apple, of course, skipped iWork '07 and iLife '07 versions and went straight to '08 versions eight months later.
While the new MacBook Pros will likely incorporate only modest updates (Penryn and Multi-Touch), with their imminent release, its hard to justify the purchase of the current 8 month old models.

I've been waiting to buy a Macbook Pro for about a month now because I figured an update was inevitable. Once they introduce these new Macbook Pros I will be buying one! I can't wait! The new trackpad would be a nice new feature.

I really hope they come out either this or next week. I haven't used a mac since the bubble imacs we had in middle school, and I've been waiting since September to get a MBP. The more time that goes by the more the dell xps 1330 is looking better, especially now with Ubuntu on it.

Oh jeez, come on already Apple :apple:.
I've been waiting since August 07 to buy a new laptop. Macbook Pro is my only option as a creative professional.
I'll admit... I love toys.... A new MBP is not a necessity (this is the first time I have ever admitted this).... BUT ! Please would you just release one already ???
It's been so long !!!!! SOOOOO LONG !!!!!!

It shows the box size for the new MBP... is this any different than the current one? they would probably change it to be like the Air and the iPhone/Touch wouldnt they?
Also, the 10th is a Sunday, which is when stores usually list new products. So, it would make sense that this would be the sale date if the MBP comes out on the 5th.

Good point. That size is way too big. 9.6 inches in its smallest dimension? I believe the current MBP boxes are only 3-3.5 inches thick.

Forget new hardware - get the OS 10.5.2 update out with fixes for Leopard's wifi problems!!! I know that work being done on new Mac hardware won't really slow down work on the OS update, but until the OS update comes out, even the newest Mac will probably have wifi problems.
C'mon Apple! It's really frustrating to have what otherwise would be the best home computer OS that's ever existed, but that can't do one of the most important OS functions without having major problems!

About those screenshots:
1) It's not necessarily a Macbook Pro
2) It's not necessarily a new model of Macbook Pro
3) It will be obsoleted in two months (4-6-2008) so I'll keep on waiting™

It could just be different boxes. Sometimes when the box changes the SKU changes. Over X-mas i was working at FutureShop (which is owned by best buy) and i saw a couple times where the box for an iPod accessory had changed and the new boxes had different SKU's and UPC's.
Also sometimes things have more than one SKU associated with them, though usually not.

The way I read that purported inventory sheet each box would hold 2 15.4" MBP's.
Apple lists the weight of the 15" at 5.4 lbs. and the dimensions of 14.1X9.6 inches. The sheet shows a weight of a little over 10 lbs. and the box is 19.5X19.4X9.6. Two 15" Macbook Pros ( including packaging ) would fit in one box.
Each one in it's own box stacked flat.

I work for best buy. I will go in tomorrow and check these skus out to see what they are and post back. That in stock date usually means nothing when it comes to apples random release dates. For example it shows the Macbook air with an in stock date of february 10 as well. regardless I will post back tomorrow with more info if I find any.

Great. Update them to penryn and let me buy one. However don't update the keyboard to match the macbook air. Reminds me of the earlier macbook pros (ti book I think). Ugly with the black keyboard imo.
However if they do a new keyboard and do the update to the casing, a la the macbook, it would be an even tradeoff. As long as it included easier HD swapping and a magnetic latch.

I have a second generation MacBook Pro and it's been great. I'll wait for WWDC for a new case MBP with a Magnetic latch and probably other features matching the MacBook Air.
I find it funny how people buy a computer, hold on to it for a few months then sell it on eBay losing money only to get a very similar computer with minor changes.

Actually I like the Powerbooks black keys, that are left over from the pismo (which I owned) brownish/black keys) In fact I like how the keys are just squares. They taper off...there is a 'design' element to it and not just a square cookie cutter feel. (Pismo was cool as could be with the curves...make it thin and your on to something.)
Either way, somewone else said why get one in Feb if the new ones Monteniva is coming out in April. As you see Apple is no releasing chips with Intel, they could wait for August for back to school sells. Sure I would like to wait, but my computers monitor is hanging by a thread. (Literally.)

I just bought a 15" 2.4Ghz MBP a few days ago. Yeah, I knew the new ones might be just around the corner, but the way I saw it, I needed a notebook to replace my G4, and the current iteration of MBPs are more than powerful enough to meet my needs. 45nm Penryns with SSE4 would be nice, but as far as i'm concerned, they would be more like bragging rights. (for me at least) Now if the Montevina platform were just around the corner, that would be a different story. On that note, the unfortunate fact remains that by mid-2008, the MBP will likely see another more substantial update to incorporate Montevina features like 1066Mhz FSB and DDR3 800 memory.....then Calpella in 2009. Maybe we should ask Intel to slow down their roadmap by just a bit.... :-)
I do still have the option of returning the 2.4 for the 10% restocking fee, but it'll take more than a simple CPU upgrade and a fancy touchpad to get me to cough up another $240. And if they change the keyboard to the chiclet style ones on the MB and MBA, there's no way I'm exchanging this MBP. One of the major reasons I went with a G4 Powerbook back in 2003 was because the keyboard was so much nicer than the iBook. I stlll think the PB/MPB keyboards are much more comfortable to type on than the MB (which I've also used extensively)

Pismo's have been popping up in conversation a lot lately... And this where we should be getting hot and bothered! The keyboard! The apple external keyboard, the MacBook and the MacBook Air keyboards all suck in my opinion.
The pismo had a beautiful keyboard, and I like the feel of the Macbook Pro keyboard, it's only that the grey is so dull. I can live with that, if there is no change to the style of keys. But if apple were pandering to my desires it would be backlit bronze keys of the pismo/lombard days gone by...

As to getting a new penryn MBP or waiting for Montevina? Montevina will bring a redesign, but not a significant performance boost. I can live with that on the basis that I actually 'need' a laptop, like yesterday. Also I am unconvinced that apple will launch it's MBP redesign with Montevina at WWDC.
I think factors, including that there have to be be Penryn Macbook's around that time (maybe month before, is likely) that there is already going to be a MBP in the market since February, hopefully, and Apple is better to capitalise on the back to school and impending christmas season.
Apple won't have more than 2 updates in a calendar year. They would be better to release in September to capitalise on all those corporations buying big before the end of the tax year. (correct me if my timing on the US fiscal year is wrong, i'm not from there)
All this is meaningless for me, as I won't be able to sell a Penryn MBP until at least March 2009, damnit, being in Bangladesh!

A quick call to any Best Buy location can confirm or blast this rumor. Just call any Best Buy store, ask them if they can tell you if they have a product in stock, be sure to tell them you have SKU number (which according to the screen shots is "8703441", which is later than the Air's SKU which according to Best Buy.com is "8698894"). They will be able to tell you pretty much anything you see on those so called screen shots. Ask a few questions like the price and see what they say.
If the information matches these screen shots, its real, if it doesn't then it's not and this is just another DEAD rumor. This test is pretty conclusive.

At first I read that as you were getting two more **********. Which would be amusing.
I work on a MB every day, though thankfully not as my main computer. The advantage of the MBP style keyboard, regardless of colour, is that you can allow your fingers to 'drift' and 'fall' on the right key, so typing is a subtler exercise without so much 'key punching' as if it were a typewriter. With the MB style keyboard, as my fingers tips reach the gaps between the keys, i have to lift them up a little to reach the right key, if you're typing a lot and typing fast this gets old quickly.
Keyboards preferences are very personal and some people really obsess over them. The IBM Model M keyboard is a great example of cult icon status for a keyboard. Maybe apple should make it a BTO for pros, like matte screen?
Maybe a processor update soon with full redesign in April.
What kind of redesign are people thinking of here? A larger track pad, sure, and maybe a bit of case sculpting/keyboard a la MacBook Air, but since the Air is alu isn't the chance of a radical redesign for the MBP somewhat slight? Obviously Apple could pull something completely new out of the bag, and it won't be the first time, but if they were thinking of using a new case material wouldn't they have incorporated into the MBA? Won't a radical new MBP casing will have the effect of making the MBA seem 'old'?

The logic board of the Montevina chipset is significantly smaller than the current Santa Rosa chipset. Reports vary from 25% - 40%.
Apple won't move away from Alu, but they will introduce a more tapered design over the current batch. Guaranteed. I'd be willing to place a healthy wager on it.

Here's hoping that one of the next couple of Tuesdays will yield something then. There is definitely mounting evidence of an update, not to mention the 8 month gap since the last update.
I would be perfectly happy with the current design, although the I'd love to have the multi-touch. Can't say I'm a massive fan of the new keyboard but then I'd rather have it in some ways because it would make my new purchase feel 'new' for longer, but I love the MacBook Pro keyboard because it's the same as the one I'm using to type on now - on my 12" PB.
There may well be a major redesign in around 6 months, but what has happened to all the people whining on about rev As? I'd rather have one once they have ironed out all the little things, but while having all that time to enjoy my new MacBook Pro. :)
To all those having waited months for the update and then having just bought a MBP a week or two before imminent updates - and that are smiling with glee for the update 'only' probably having a faster processor and multi-touch... not to piss on your parade, but you do know that waiting one or two more weeks would have got you not only more for your money but potentially a saving of $200-500 on the old models (that you have) over buying last week? Unless you really need it, and for having it for an extra week, I don't really understand what is to gain, however 'crap' the update ends up being??? Surely, the update is still better?

1. I do not like waiting for a new product Jobs, come on with the MBP.
2. I wonder if Apple will have new ads for the Super Bowl.
3. The backing of the Ipod Touch gets scratched up so easily.
4. I have read that some people think that there will be 2 updates to the MBP line this year. The upgrade in processor and then a case redesign later in the year. I would put my money on a new processor and case redesign for the next update.

Waddabout the graphics card? Mightly the new ATi Mobility Radeon 3xxx will arrive into the new MBPs. They are not as good as the nVidia 8800 GTS/GTX but better than the nVidia 8700 GTS. Would be a fair compromise, especially cause the new 3xxx needs much less energy and got the newest interfaces.

Although the drifting between keys is nice, getting caught by the sharp underside of any of the keys is a painful reminder that the keyboard could be better. I had a Macbook Pro and a Macbook Black and the macbook's keyboard was much better for typing. The new apple keyboard lowers the keys creating the perfect design in my mind. It would not be hard for apple to make the newer keys in silver, and with the sleek design they have on the keyboard they might be able to ditch the keypit altogether, making for an even better flowing design. We will most likely see the magnetic latch addressed in this upcoming model, but they will not be doing another mbp redesign until 2009. Although Montevina will be out mid 2008, Apple won't be putting it into anything until Macworld, and at that point there will be a 13" MBP released.

To be delivered for the 10th, it has to be an announcement on the 5th. I can't imagine how or why they would announce new products AFTER they've been dispatched to shops other than Apples own. There's no way they'd trust people like BB with unannounced stock.
So- the next 3 days, we either get new MBP's (thus following the 'this tuesday or next' rumour from MR) - or both that MR rumour AND this BB rumour are false.

The Australian store shows BTO delivery estimates now to be 4-6 business days... (up until yesterday, it was 2-4 business days).
This in combination with reports of various stores in the US now being out of stock might also suggest the next revision is more imminent?

But for me, the most important feature is BluRay support. Most other companies now have laptops at a similar pricepoint to the MacBook Pro with a BluRay drive and Apple needs to at least have it as an option, or fall behind. But this will of course mean including a HDCP chip with the graphics card.

Everytime people say this wont be a major upgrade I don't know what to do...
Should I buy it when it only got some hardware upgrades?
Or should I wait for a full redesign?
But then I remember alot of people that said that Macbook Air couldn't be the name of the MBA because Apple would never put a part of their new product in their banners.
So some people think they know it all....(no offence;)) But Apple supprises us sometimes...

I wish they'd hurry up and get here - just so we can get started with the NEXT round of "don't buy these because there's an update coming some day".
You buy a computer when you need one or when the feature set is compelling enough to replace your old one. This constant "I must have the latest 10% performance gains so I can do my email and web browsing faster" is inane.
To be delivered for the 10th, it has to be an announcement on the 5th. I can't imagine how or why they would announce new products AFTER they've been dispatched to shops other than Apples own. There's no way they'd trust people like BB with unannounced stock.
They used to do it with CompUSA. Why not BB?

True. And as such I am not buying anything. But it's fun watching – I'd like them to come soon, just so my curiosity can be satsfied. The only thing that could get me to buy something else than my current would be a true ultraportable. But that one I have already kissed goodbye. Hell, I'll wait a little while and buy a thinkpad as an "extra", when I really want to spring for another one.
Until then, I will have to "make-do" with my 2.33 GHz/120GB/2GB Ram. And when that gets a little long in the tooth, I'll upgrade the RAM, and perhaps even go SSD (you can get a nifty SSD in an expresscard form factor).

Most likely with a ATI 3650M card.
160, 200, 250 and 320GB Hard Drive options. 2GB RAM standard.
2.4 Ghz, 2.6Ghz and 2.8Ghz. Price points stay the same.
Looking to upgrade my 2Ghz MBP shortly thereafter.

Did you do it?

Virgil-TB2
Feb 3, 2008, 09:56 AM
yes, but I looked up the SHIPPING weight on amazon and its 9.6lbs for one. either they cut the weight in half, or the thing comes with some extra goodies. hmm...Interesting indeed.
It's worth noting that the old PowerBook boxes were almost as thick as this one appears to be as well and that Apple is changing it's packaging to be more environment friendly right now so all assumptions based on old packaging might be irrelevant.
In the end though it's a place-holder in the sales database of a store for a product the people in the store have never seen. It's also Best Buy after all, so the more likely scenario is that the details we are looking at are inaccurate in one or more places.

do you guys think that along with an update they would raise the standard ram in the top of the line 15 inch macbook pro.
I remember when the cheapest only came with 1 gig ram standard, but now it comes with two, so shouldn't apple sell the middle and top of the line 17 inch with 3 gigs of ram standard for the same price.

they released the intel macbook without a media event, so it is possible that they release a mbp case redesign without a media event. this would also make reasonable sense because then they could release a new macbook case in june/july, getting ready for for the back to school season.

3GB standard might be a bit odd; the reason you are seeing 3GB of RAM standard on some PC laptops now is more because they are still shipping with 32-bit Windows Vista, and can't take advantage of the full 4GB.
If Apple were to up the standard RAM (which I don't think they'd do), they might as well just go to 4GB standard, since it isn't an issue with Leopard.

I really think a major MBP case redesign would come with Montevina in the spring or summer; it seems like you would want to tie a major external change alongside a significant internal change as well, and a simple CPU update from Merom to Penryn wouldn't really fit the bill.

Well my reasoning was that if they bumped the entry level computer's ram but the price is the same, then the only thing differentiating that and the high end 15 inch, is faster processor and bigger vid card, seems like if they bump up the low end's ram, it should ripple troughout the lineup to eventhings out.

You know what I just realized? We are all REALLY big Mac nerds. I mean, instead of doing productive work or spending time with loved ones we're putting posts on a hypothetical new MBP. lol.
To thow my 2 cents into this debate. Isn't a larger track pad+new keyboard+magnetic latch technically a case re-design? What do you guys want for a case redesign? lol I mean, if it gets any thinner, factory standard drives/parts WON'T fit in it? And if that happens, good luck getting top of the line drives/cards/memory for the MBP. As it is, the 15" model has to have a special optical drive made for it. Only the 17" will hold a standardized drive.
Thinness isn't really a big deal to me. I mean, for god sakes. i've been working on a POS Toshiba from like 2002! The damn thing is like 15lbs and almost 3 inches thick! The current MBP is like Star Trek tech compared to that thing.
I don't think there should be a rush to force the MBP to be any thinner than necessary. After all, look at the MBA. It's "supper thin" and it has a crappy, slow processor. If they made the MBP any thinner, it would compromise speed and its ability to do the job its designed for= PRO'S.
Also, I hope for a new graphics card. Why? Because, the NVIDIA 8600 really is a bit of a dated card. Also, if they don't offer a Blu Ray option, they should at least have the decency to add a card that has a HDCP chip in it so we can swap out the optical drive for Blu Ray whenever apple gets it ducks in a row. I mean, not to be a fan boy, buy Blu Ray is pretty much dominating the market. The format war will be won in short order. It's pretty safe to side with Blu Ray right now. Over the last couple of weeks i've heard OLD PEOPLE talk about getting Blu Ray. OLD PEOPLE! Most old people can barely operate a DVD player, yet they're getting on the Blu Ray bandwagon?
Cool! Cool, yet bizzare.

I don't think this is necessarily true based off of apple's recent history. When they went intel they specifically KEPT the old design so as not to confuse customers. When they released the Santa Rosa Macbook they KEPT the old design. The times the have changed the design recently were not coordinated with internal changes very much. iMac was a notable exception however...
Personally with the new MBP I see:
1. Penryn support - longer battery life, slightly increased performance
2. Multi-touch trackpad
3. Macbook Air keyboard
4. 17" LED
5. Magnetic latch
5. Possible SSD as option
6. Possible slight case redesign to match macbook air somewhat
7. Possible upgrade in graphics card IF there is a case redesign
8. Possible change in battery
9. Possibly something totally new and crazy none of us have ever heard of before but now that we know about it we can't live without one...

my questions on these new models are:
1- does it include option for 3g AT&T GSM broadband chip integrated with no need for expresscard
2- Blu-Ray drive option? will it play back Blu-Ray discs?
3- better / higher end graphics chip option.
Where is Apple on Blu-Ray? they can store amazing amounts of data, playback movies for those of us switching over from DVD to HD.
it's time to allow lead the market again in technology.

I don't think the jump to Penryn is "*yawn*" at all. The jump in performance might not be much (at the moment at least), but it's the longer battery life and the smaller CPU size that make it interesting for me.
In that regards, a switch to an ATI 3xxx GPU would make perfect sense as well. Less heat, smaller size, less power hungry than the NVidia GPUs.
Less heat and less size also mean that you don't need as many heat sinks, thus you could make the whole MBP a bit thinner as well, since portability seems to be all the rage lately. Although, on second thought, that wouldn't make a whole lot of sense, seeing as they'd be cutting into MBA sales there...
Anyway, I'm still pretty excited about what we will be seeing.

What ever Apples does the one thing they need to do is create significant separation between the MacBook and the MacBook Pro, right now they are too close in features and power, yet there is a significant price difference. A Pro wants power and not all of them want to be tied to a desk.

CPU update, same price:
I'm OK, and glad I waited - but not particularly happy that Apple took so long.
1680 option on 15" screen:
Happy, very glad I waited - just about makes the MBP's price point swallowable.
Easier HDD replacement (properly user replaceable like the MB)
Very very glad I've waited, well done Apple.

No no no they are not a ripoff: they are just typical apple overpriced hardware. These new bumped ones will be too. If you need one, buy one. The current MBP's are great boxes.
How is it not a ripoff if I can pay the same price for better specs in a few weeks (most likely)?
PC Makers at least scale their prices down as the specs become less current.

We are talking about Apple here, they rarely lower prices. They prefer to give you more for your money or split the difference (500 more features for a 200 dollar increase).

- Higher resolution on 15'' model
- Magnetic Latch
- Updated Graphics Card
- Keyboard in uniform color with rest of case
- Thinner

- 13.3'' model (MBA dashed the chances of that ever happening though)
- Black or Gunmetal case

I would like another laptop.
I now have now is the MBP 2.16. I do audio work and this is just enough power for what do. However, I would like one to be my 'mobile' and one to be my stay at home desktop. I do not need a big tower anymore.
I would like the new MBP-Air but It is underpowered and lacks Optical-Ports. I guess I'll have to wait for a new MBP in the Fall and use that as my desktop...

I'm probably one of the few hoping that they use this opportunity to update the iMac as well. Once that gets updated, I'm planning on buying one. I wonder what's taking Apple so long with all of these updates / redesigns? Do you think iPods, MBA, or the iPhone is causing delays?

there's a biiig difference between the MBA and even the current MBP in features (ports, optical drive) and power (MBA processor way slower than MBP).
lol.
You can get a 2.2GHz in a MB, and the base MBP is a 2.2. Those are EQUIVALENT processors. Even the 2.6GHz MBP is 'only' 400MHz quicker in processor clock (not bus speed).

From what I saw of updates to the Powerbook/MBP, price cuts have only come to the 17" model. So no surprise that the 15" is still $1999. Doesn't mean Apple won't lower the price on the 17" model though. Which is a good thing for me as I plan to get the 17" MBP! :)

What does an aluminum case have to do with this? It's not as important as the other features the MacBook Pro has. Why do a lot of people think that the aluminum is an upgrade over the plastic? What's so special about the aluminum other than it's more recycle-friendly?

99.99% chance:
Penryn processors (2.5 and 2.6 GHz, 6 MB L2 models)
17" goes LED backlit
Fingers crossed for:
Bump to 8700M GT or equivalent
Slightly thinner (perhaps 0.9")
17" to drop below 3 kg
SSD option for those with deep enough pockets
Improved battery life
Pricing structure reworked, so price difference between the two 15" models isn't so huge for a tiny leap in specs.
Would be nice if:
15" got a 1680x1050 option
Blu-ray optional

Well - this will be my first foray into the "Pro" world :)
Everyone keeps saying the Penryn processors only offer a small speed boost - but I've read on some übergeek sites that if an application is coded for the Penryn, the speed boost is rather significant. Apple coded specifically for the G4, so why not the same boosts for the Penryn?
I don't keep up-to-date on this Leopard release stuff, as I run Tiger, but maybe Apple is recoding for the Penryn? I also read the update will be rather large, so that also might make sense?
Anyway, one of Apple's many benefits over Windows is that they control both the OS and the machines, so they can take advantage of things like this?
At any rate, once I buy the MBP, it will be 3-4 years before I get another machine - so what's this about some HUGE update in the fall? Are new processors coming out or something?
I'm perfectly happy with dropping a grand on a MacBook and seeing a major revision within a year - but I'd be highly PO'd if I spend so much on a MBP and see that happen.
My current setup suits me fine - my fiancee just wants my current machine, as hers is really old - but I'll just sit on my hands and wait (again) if there's a major new processor on the horizon.
If any of the gurus can tip me off on any of this, I'd appreciate it.

I have a first-gen MBP which is perfectly fine for everything I throw at it, running Leopard.
I am going to wait until Apple incorporates Intel's Nehalem architecture into the MBP sometime in early-mid 2009 - integrated memory controller, new microarchitecture. By that time I also imagine we'll be into the 2nd or 3rd generation of 65nm or 55nm graphics processors, so it will make sense to upgrade. I would also imagine sizeable SSD drives will be available, along with Blu-Ray.
That will be the time to buy.

You know, in the long run all this rumormongering does is hurt Apple's bottom line, since there's a neverending cascade of rumors that something's about to be updated, meaning people are constantly waiting a little longer to upgrade or buy, since they're always going to be afraid to buy anytime other than the 48 hours follwing a visit from the Steve.

Also, if Apple isn't planning on recoding for the Penryn, then it seems rather stupid to buy a "new" MBP - and I might as well just get the older model.
I could care less about the stupid trackpad gadgetry or the extended battery life.
I'd just like to know if I'm actually buying something "new" or throwing my money away on a negligible speedbump.
Speed isn't the issue for me. It's forward compatibility and a larger screen - as my iBook is getting hard on the eyes these days.

I don't think it's rumor-mongering at this point. Steve Jobs is so busy playing Inspector Gadget that he can't seem to get around to updating Apple's computers.

A PRO machine (IMHO) needs to have at least three things over a non-pro system:
1) More horse power
2) Substantialy more video performance (edit photos, video, sound/music) and or resolution.
3) More BTO options like larger option for disks, more memory options, expandability thru a slot or some other option.
I am not sure that the number of ports are so important as they would be at home or work. You can connect to a firewire or USB hub when on a desktop setting for all the expansion you could ever need (minus multiple external monitors). Most people don't want 4 to 10 cables running out of their laptop while in a plane or sitting on the couch. Expansion ports are mainly for desktop settings. A base MB or MBP is fine for the road for most people and have plenty of ports for when on your lap. Even the Air will do fine with one or two USB hubs when used at a desk.
Like I said, just my opinion, horse power of the cpu and video is what really differentiate a pro machine, obviously there will be people that disagree. If you ask 10 people you will get at least 11 different answers.

Not sure about new processors in late 2008 (Core3/Nehalem), but an updated platform for sure. The current line of MBPs use Intel's Santa Rosa chipset/platform. While the Penryn's are compatible with SR, Intel is slated to release an update to SR later this year, which is supposedly going to offer higher FSB (up to 1066MT/s) and support for 800Mhz DDR2 and DDR3(maybe) RAM.
If you look back at the update history of the MBP, you'll see that the original Core Duo models received a simple CPU upgrade to the Merom based Core 2 Duos in October 2006. It then got updated to Santa Rosa in June 2007, a few months after Intel released that platform. It looks like the same thing is going to happen this year - MBPs will get the updated Penryn CPU in the next few weeks, but once the new Montevina platform comes out later this year, we might see a much more substantial upgrade in the next 6-8 months.
So unless you NEED a new notebook in the coming weeks, I'd personally hold off until later this year. At least then you'll be future proofed for at least another year... Me however, I ended up in the "need" category, so I'm happily typing this away on my 2.4 SR MBP.

The recoding you keep referring to is SSE4, which is a set of instructions for handling video encoding. The only place you would see the large 40% speed boost claims are when running video editing programs, and only if those PROGRAMS are rewritten for SSE4. There is no generic coding for Penryn that would improve the entire OS. Other than that, most users would likely see a 10-15% performance boost, which is about the same as any processor upgrade.
6 months from now we will probably see new Montevina chipsets, still running the same Penryn processors. Another 6 months from them you'll see the next generation of Intel processor. Feel free to pick and choose how many 6 month periods you want to wait :)

I got this from a website:
The Montevina platform places its lineage on the Intel Santa Rosa platform. The Santa Rosa is the original Centrino. But Montevina will be based on Intel's upcoming 45-nm quad-core Penryn processor. The system is based on the new the Intel Robeson 2.0 architecture. Robeson was designed and built for mobility. The Robeson architecture will enable mobile laptops to use less battery power, and crunch data better and faster with less latency - an important feature in the 802.16 environments.
It makes zero sense to me - the gist of the article seemed to relate that it has something to do with WiFi, along with some moderate speedbump?
I don't get any of it. I was basing my purchasing decision on a processor - and please correct me if that's an idiotic reason.
But it sounds like this Montevina thing will be a faster Penryn - so if Apple recodes to take advantage of Penryn, I should be fine with the next MBP?
My concern is Apple releasing a new OS that "takes advantage" of whatever bloatfest the new processors provide - thereby "taking disadvantage" of what turns out to be my antiquated computer that can't handle the new OS.
Would any of the gurus sort this out for the tech-impaired?
lowbuzz
Feb 3, 2008, 02:41 PM
So for "future-proofing", is it worth it to lay down the $$$ for Penryn or wait for the update and snag the current gen on refurb, or on sale?
My particular requirements for a new Apple are:
1) Larger screen - thus Pro. I work at home from the couch :)
2) Future-proofed for minimum of 4 years for new OS - even if it doesn't run "as fast" or do stupid gadgetry crap. For instance, when the Altivecs could handle the "spinning screen" on user agent switching, whereas the G3s couldn't - I shed no tears. I view that crap as bogus.
3) Value - what model delivers the best bang for the buck?
4) Windows "future proofing". I don't think this is such a big worry cuz Microsoft takes so long between updates, but I need to be able to test in a PC environment.
Thanks much for the help.

Unfortunately, this new date is likely an estimate, but does reflect expectations (http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#MacBook_Pro) of an imminent MacBook Pro release.
While the new MacBook Pros will likely incorporate only modest updates (Penryn and Multi-Touch), with their imminent release, its hard to justify the purchase of the current 8 month old models.

MBA is a joke, missing FW, no optical built in, no USB drive as a solution for installation of software, and big insult of being charged $1000 for an overly expensive, slower than 2.5in HDD performance SSD, get real.
Flash price tumbles, to spur SSDs, phones
http://www.electronista.com/articles/08/02/01/flash.price.tumble.jan.08/
Even relatively expensive, recently introduced 32 gigabit memory (4GB) chips cost as little as $12.30, the company notes. The drops are linked primarily to continued oversupply despite an increasingly heavy demand for flash-based devices, such as portable media players.
the costs have dropped enough that storage makers can consider 128GB drives that cost less than 64GB drives did before. (want to be Apple keeps the option price @/or about $1k)
It is had to justify purchasing either or and/all Apple lappy' currently, when the Monteviña chipset will be released in May, meaning Apple will likely have a series of updates in just 4 months.
128GB SSD from Samsung should come out by June (1st H08) @ or below the price , that has 2.5x the speed/performance that Apple is gouging for it's meager performing, older then current gen 64GB SSD.
http://www.electronista.com/articles/08/01/07/samsung.128gb.ssd.and.more/
The new model is faster than before and writes new data at 70 megabytes per second while reading back at a quicker 100 megabytes per second, all the while eliminating the lag that plagues spinning disks. It also operates far more efficiently and consumes just 0.5 watts while active, according to Samsung.
While Penryn/Santa Rosa update will provide very modest increase in bang for the buck, Monteviña and new models of Penryn's should make both the MBA & MBP...& perhaps around the same time, MB upgrades seem like the current models are a very poor value....even if they finally do offer a BR drive option (Lenovo has had this for months). Will any of Apple's laptops finally get the 2nd gen LED bl screens Samsung was said to be soon in production on...probably not (waiting for Monteviña)
http://www.electronista.com/articles/08/01/15/intel.montevina.leak/
A 10w drop in power consumption, would mean a 2.53GHz Monteviña P9500 powered MBP could have either noticeable increase in battery life, yey; or higher performance GPU, something that's been a performance option missing from Apple's lappy offerings, that you could get in PC land.
A new entry, the P series, will reduce the power consumption to just 25W but will still clock at speeds of 2.26GHz (P8400, 3MB of L2 cache), 2.4GHz (P8600), and 2.53GHz (P9500, 6MB cache) with the faster system bus.
Apple stock will continue to flounder, meaning a good buy possibility now; but come May/June '08, is clearly the time to be considering an Apple lappy purchase- not now.

Though multi-touch and Penryn will be nice additions, I don't think any new MacBook's or MacBook Pro's will have that many new features to make older models obsolete (so to speak). I think its gonna be another year before there are 1) major changes or 2) new Apple laptops. Though the MacBook Air is a niche product, I don't think Apple will cannibalize its sales by introducing a product that could sway on-the-fence buyers away from the flAir (as someone put it). But I've been wrong once or twice in my lifetime

i have a feeling that if they upgrade to Penryn now...we won't see Montevina till late august or september/october (ie fall 2008). If they do do a update 4 months after penryn, all it will be then is the chipset and not anything else (or thus they'd but it in the penyrn). my .02$
I will be purchasing the penryn when it comes out, plan on keeping it anywhere from 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 years

On these flash drives - I was jonesing hard for new MacBook Pros with flash drives. I thought that would be kick ass - given they might be too expensive now, but upgrading in the future would be possible.
I'm sure I'll win technomoron of the year for this one - but what's the DEAL with these flash drive things?
For instance, why would it not be possible to remove an old hard drive and replace it with a flash drive in the future?
I was really hoping that the rich people would jump all over the new flash drives, force the price down, and I'd be able to get one in the next few months.
Even if you say bought a MacBook Flair, with the flash drive option - would you be able to upgrade when the drives have a higher capacity? Or would the I/O be outdated by then?
I was thinking he'd dispense with the gadgets, then open up a new MacBook Pro, push the "on" button - and Leopard would instantly load - ooohh ahhhh...
I'm very worried that the MBP will be short-changed so that it doesn't compete with the Flair -
And I was really counting on you rich bastages to order tons and tons of flash drives and knock the price down for me.

Well, as far as I understand, they're fast, really fast – except maybe for sustained transfer. One caveat, though: You can get ass-slow ones too – just like the one in the MB Flair. There are differences in speed there, just as there are differences in speed with SDHC-cards (and CF-cards for that matter).
With that said and done, SSD will give you a much "faster" computer because the user interface will be faster (since it has almost no seek time).
Also, there is zero mechanical parts in it, making it much more rugged. Everything else might shake loose, but your data will be safe.
– And if it's anything like a CF-card (it is), you could put a nail through it and will still work (well, the rest of it – not the part with the nail through it, of course).
Also, it works from very low temperatures to rather high ones.
This I haven't seen mentioned anywhere around here, but one of the best things, imo, about solid state vs. harddrives is that it wont condense if you bring it in from the cold. Condensation is something I worry about – living in Denmark and all.
Oh, and yes, it does weigh less, but that really isn't something to worry about.
For instance, why would it not be possible to remove an old hard drive and replace it with a flash drive in the future?
It is possible. You just have to find someone who supports the "plug".

Yup, and with that shape you could actually use a normal DVI, have firewire, a normal non-mechanical USB-slot, a normal Magsafe, and an expresscard-slot.
It's not because the MB Air is thin those things have to be "special" (or non-existant), no, it's because they have tapered the edges.

You don't have to worry about the tech being placed in other Mac models. That's coming either way. A SSD in a MacBook or MacBook Pro right now would be quite expensive not to mention rather limited in capacity (I believe the largest SSD for a laptop is currently 128GB). The Air will actually help to drive the prices down...eventually (it will need help from other laptop manufacturers though). In 15 months we will probably see SSD's as an option in new laptop models.

As you pointed out, beyond speed, the best part is that (from what I understand) it's almost infinitely more reliable.
I just received (and sent back) 2 Lacie Quadra 500GB drives. They both made awful scraping noises - not cool.
On this plug thing, though - laptops are for the most part disposable items. Other than memory and drives, you can't really upgrade them.
So quite seriously, on a laptop - when replacing a drive, are you also replacing it's I/O (like on an external drive, for instance).
Given the right price point, I don't think there's anyone who wouldn't toss their disk for a flash drive in a heartbeat.
Is there any realistic potential for current drives to be replaced with flash drives, or would it rely on a completely new "platform".
It is possible. You just have to find someone who supports the "plug".

Anyway, there IS a market for the MBA, there ARE more people buying it than all the nay-sayers think, and it's not going to go away this year like some people have said.
To answer the legitimate question you asked previously, your best bang for the buck in a 15" screen size Apple laptop is the base model 15" 2.2ghz. Upgrade to 4gb ram (and bigger HDD if you choose) with 3rd party RAM. Feel free to buy refurb if you want, the warranty is the same on those. Oh, and some would say the quality-assurance process on those is even better because they need proper testing to guarantee functionality before resale, while they assume the new in box items work.

You know, if you have the money to throw around, you can just buy a 2.5" sata ssd from any online retailer.
And then find that you pretty much have to disassemble the machine to install it.
I hope this is a Quad, I saw an ad for a Quad laptop, also we need to separate the MacBook from the MacBook Pro and a quad processor would certainly do that.
Pro's on the go can use the extra cores.
The Macbook Pros are thin and lights. Quads aren't going to fit. 8800 isn't going to fit either, unless you want a machine that is much thicker. Alienware's new m15x is by far the smallest machine yet released for such a setup and that's still 0.3 inches thicker and a pound a half heavier than the 15" Macbook pro.
No way Blu Ray arrives in the MBP before the Mac Pros.
Panasonic also has to intro its 9.5mm slot loading drive (they already have a tray drive). Apple uses ultra slim drives designed for ultraportables to make their machines a hair thinner.

On this plug thing, though - laptops are for the most part disposable items. Other than memory and drives, you can't really upgrade them.
Hmm. As it now – not in general, but right now - the SSD-prices are rather high and the space on them aren't really up to scratch. When that time comes, all that will matter is whether the "plug" (the I/O) will fit. Yes, it will be as hard to change as changing it for another HDD, but the only thing that will matter if wether, say, Samsung is using the same plug (be it PATA, SATA, IDE or whatever). Other than that it will work and function just like a HDD-replacement.
So quite seriously, on a laptop - when replacing a drive, are you also replacing it's I/O (like on an external drive, for instance).
I don't know if you're asking or not? But to me, the "plug" _is_ the I/O, although simplified.
Is there any realistic potential for current drives to be replaced with flash drives, or would it rely on a completely new "platform".
An SSD will function just like a mechanical HDD for all intents and purposes. An SSD, unlike NAND, is a disk drive, albeit a solid state-one. You can get all sorts of SSD's, including an ExpressCard-one to fit in your slot in the MBP.

Best Buy *does* get skus into their system months in advance of when they actually get the product. The dates listed are very very general and in no way represent actual shelf dates for Best Buy stores. I used to work there, and the inventory screen shot looks legit, I'm just curious how they would take a screen shot on a system and further send it in to MacRumors... the in-store computers have fairly limited abilities. I guess you could take a screen shot on the manager station and load it onto a pen drive.. maybe...

Actually, I couldn't give a toss about the graphics card – I don't do graphics, but audio. More power? Yes, that is always nice.
But what I really would like is an MBA with a tad more power, smaller footprint, squared (in order to make space fr FW800, expresscard slot etc) and a matte, higher resolution screen. In short, a wee bit smaller and a bit lighter MBP, but with the same resolution. Oh, and no optical drive.
Graphics? Pfft. Those things are for amateurs and gamers! :D

I don't think that this really means anything:(. Currently, about 60% of Atlanta area stores have Apple kiosks w/ the full line of Macs (except MBA). Recently, while at a Best Buy that did not carry Macs, an employee told me that all Best Buys stores would soon have the kiosks. So..... I believe the "new skus" in the system are simply preparations for the launch. Also, this could be a good way for Apple to relieve the rest of it's current MBP inventory before the release of the new Penryn update. Either way, hurry up and release the damn thing!

Do you think Apple will really update the MBP now and again in June? It would make sense if this was simply a speed bump, but I question whether or not they will add multitouch now and then do a case redesign later.
The MBP hasn't really changed physically since it was released right? It seems like multitouch would come with a redesign...
My prediction (maybe wishful thinking in part): Macbook Pro Update in next few weeks will be the whole deal. add Penryn, multitouch trackpad, new keybord, and slightly different/thinner case. If there's going to be any new ports ie. HDMI, add those now too.
When Montevina comes, that will be the "speed bump" because I think WWDC will be focused on the 3G iphone and a tablet Mac. An updated MBP doesn't seem like big enough news for a keynote, and since the Penryn is physically smaller than the current processor, the case redesign should come with that.
Ok... what do you think?

The reason that there are different classes of notebook is that even within professionals there are different classes. There is a segment that would be better served with a thicker notebook with better features. That being said, Apple really doesn't care what we think. Right or wrong they've decided that they've wanted to become the Armani of computers so to speak. Something more utilitarian might be very useful, but doesn't have the wow factor that they want.

Going back to something that was discussed earlier in the thread, last Sunday night I ordered a MBP from the Apple store online, and was told that it would ship in 24 hours. I ended up canceling that order after deciding to wait for the update. I just went to the store and put together the same machine, and the ship time is 3-5 days.
This will be my first Mac, so I don't have any experience with orders from Apple. Are these sorts of fluctuations in shipping times par for the course, or is this actual tangible evidence that the update is coming and they're letting the stock run down?

Let's diferenciate our expectations from what possibly will come out in this next Macbook Pro update.
Forget about blu-ray , 8gb Ram support and black keyboard. Even though I would like the new Mbp to have the Mba keyboard.
The penryn, the trackpad multitouch, the LED for 17" and the magnetic latch are most likely comming out in this update.
New graphics card and SSD as an option are unsure but possible.
But don't even think about a redesigned Mbp. So just keep your mockups and your dreams where they belong.

are you guys sure that the MacBook pro update will be really small? I mean we haven't seen any hardware updates to these things in almost a year let alone a case update. I really loved the MacBook pro design but right now I'm starting to get pissed off at it. I know you guys say to get a MacBook pro when I need one but I also want to get the latest hardware and it doesnt make sense for me to buy old hardware. I'm tired of waiting! So my question again is: "is the MacBook pro really going to only have minor update? And how can you be sure?"

Agreed. I have a MB that I bought a week ago (my first Mac :)), and while it would be nice to upgrade to a MBP, I agree, it doesn't make sense to upgrade to a new laptop that will probably have incremental boosts, at best. In the meantime, I'll pick up an iMac to use at home and to completely rid my family of M$ (with the exception of my 360, but even that may be changing, seeing as I haven't been able to sign on to XBL since before Christmas). That and an iPod Touch to replace my Palm T|X.
2009 sounds right.

Id give the MBA a couple more weeks of prominent marketing (both in stores and on the website) and then we'll see the MB Pros. Unless its a speed bump and no redesign, in which case theyd just do a quiet rollout.
So, if its a redesign, theyll want to show it off and will wait a few weeks. If its not a redesign, it could be any day...
Just my thoughts.

This website is called MacRumors. Noone is sure of anything but are merely saying what they think will most likely happen.
By reading, it appears the consensus is that this will be a 'minor' update. However, noone really knows for sure. Just be patient and you'll soon know what's really going to be released.
Expect lots of whinging and people saying they'll wait for the next update.

i sold my 10 months old MBP 15.4 2.16 3gb 120gb 128mb, because I wanted the new hardware and get the 2.4 4gb (retail) 160 256, but then i heard the rumor back mid december... I m still waiting... and suffering. almost 2 months now.... 2 MONTHS WITHOUT MAC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hope it comes out soon. i just wanted to let everyone know that i m suffering tooooooo, YOU ARE NOT ALONE!. I NEED IT FOR WORK!!!!!
i would really be happy with:
standard 15 inch 2.4 2gb (hopefully 8gb ram upgrade 2x4gb obviously)
256 standard card 512 higher model
and please at least 1680 screen on 15 inch. 1920 would be too much i know...
buuuuuut then i would get the higher 2.5/6 15.4 512 video 200gb or any 7200rpm hd and if an option, the Hi res screen.
i guess that this wish could become truth. except for the screen res....
ps. i m on xp now... suffering a lot.. a lot than you could think...
MBP 4.1, Italy is waiting for you! speriamo bene

So just keep your mockups and your dreams where they belong.
sheesh ... Debbie Downer. Isn't wild speculation half the fun of a rumors site?

So I checked that Sku in the system at bestbuy and it is legit. I found two other skus for the upgraded 15" and the 17" as well. Now that does not mean anything really Best Buy just knows that Apple is going to eventually refresh the MBP and they put placeholder skus in the system.
now as far as someone else saying that Best Buy does not get Stock until a month after apple, that is not true. We had the SR Macbooks right when they were announced and we also had the new iMacs right when they came out. the Air will be in stores within the next few days for demo and will be in stock for sale in the next few weeks.

Im glad I didnt wait!
I love this machine and when the new ones come out, by the time the kinks are all out of the new ones say around september I will be happy to sell this one and get a new one and have had nearly a year with this great machine:cool:
I got you beat, you should have gotten the Core 2 Duo MBP so that by the time I wait for the one in September you'd have a really awesome machine. But then again, you could just buy the one that may come in Feb. so that you aren't waiting another 7 months for another machine like the other suckers.
p.s. No 8GB for a laptop just yet, the chips aren't here from what I understand and the price of those guys would be outrageous.

I just saw an ad for the Flair leading up to the Superbowl?
So in opposition to my earlier post, would all of the metrosexuals please don their mock turtlenecks and throw all of their support behind the Flair IMMEDIATELY. Buy them up by the zillions. Steve's ego is on the line, people!
Go Gadget Go!
Will do, lowbuzz. I'm going to organize my extensive network of rich, hipster, metrosexual friends to buy one MBA per week (because money is NO object for my set), just so that we can create artificially inflated demand, and convince Apple to drop the MBP and MB lines. The fact that Apple continues to work on the MB and MBP lines really pisses me off, because it just competes with what I and my rich, hipster friends really want.
Seriously, man. I truly like it - warts and all. It's clear that you don't, and I respect that, but it's really not a threat. Steve still loves you.

I have tried one of those at the Apple store in NJ today.
Two issues:
1. the Apple key is 4 keys away from the left, instead of 3, as on my desktop keyboard . What is the "fn" function key for? Very confusing.
2. The screen is horrible!!! I just cannot stand these glossy screens. For me that is the one show-stopper. I need a matte screen.
Otherwise the laptop was very snappy. Performance was great except that it easily choked on 1080p quicktime videos. The weight is very light, the thin body makes you forget that it is longer than the 12" Powerbook by a good inch (depth is about the same).
We are still waiting for a better small, light Powerbook to replace our 12" Powerbook. Unfortunately, because of the glossy screen, it is our conclusion that the Powerbook 12" remains the best travel laptop. We still use it professionally for that purpose. If it was just as fast or as thin as the Powerbook Air, though....
Not having a CD drive, Firewire, or a removable battery do not matter to us at all.

Do you think apple will want to compete with the primary's on tuesday? It's probably gonna be a crazy news day. I think if they do release a new MBP, they are better off waiting till the next tuesday, so they get more attention.
I think introducing it this Tues. would be a GOOD thing. Since Macworld, people have been saying "Apple won't introduce the new MBP for a few months because it will take media attention away from the MBA." THIS IS APPLE'S CHANCE! The one tuesday where all of the media is focused on the primaries, not many people will be paying attention to an upgrade in an existing laptop. Releasing the mbp on feb. 5 would not draw any media attention because of super tuesday= GOOD THING! come on apple!

You've been waiting since August when the last update was in June. Why didn't you buy in August since they were less than 2 months old?
I didn't buy in June because I purchased a new Mac Pro in May. The speedbumps were hardly a legitimate reason to justify a purchase given the probability of a refresh within a few months. However, we are into February now and we haven't seen anything.
I heard that Apple had to redirect manpower to focus on the MBA resulting in the MBP's being delayed from appearing at MacWorld this last January....
I would just like to see some love for the professional community is all... The Mac Pro's hardly got touched, only affecting those who have don't have quad systems....(aside from the grfx cards updates, which have problem within themselves).
Once again, the Macbook Pro's just need some love...

Nothing personal - I was just thinking that if Steve is still focused on his "accessory" computer, he may hold off on the laptop I need until he can claim the Flair a phenomenal success.
Everyone has their own needs - and props to the folks who can afford to accessorize.
I use Macs because I can flip open my laptop and get my work done. Keep that formula going and I'm chill.
I'd just appreciate it if he'd return his focus to those boring old computers that most of us need to get our work done.

Yeah, and what Macs did BB carry before that? That's right -- none. So let's see what happens when they actually carry an inventory of older models. I bet they milk it as long as they can, just as CompUSA used to do.

My son and I went to our local Best Buy in Elk Grove to see the inventory record for ourselves. I was interested in seeing the entire contents of the description field since it was truncated in the screen shots. We asked an employee to look up 8703441. Although there's likely no significance to it, the complete description in the field was, "Macbook Pro 1".

You will see a major increase in performance. But frankly, the performance increase you see will be pretty major whether you got a current C2D-based system or one of the newer Penryn based systems.
You have to realize of course that if you are constantly waiting because you always want to be on the cutting edge, you will be stuck using an old system for 9 years because you never get anything current.

Not sure what you are trying to say but if you are saying BB is going to start carrying the old stuff I dont see how that would be. The Oldest model we carry right now is the 2.16 Blackbook and thats only because the Blackbook does not have as much value as the white macbook and is the old version of it. oh and its discounted 150 off in order to sell through them.
One last thing is that BB has always carried mac, its just that not all of the stores carry them and the ones that do have small shops setup by apple and staffed with an apple employee.

Yeah the other two skus for macbook pro say "macbook Pro 2", and "Macbook Pro 3". they do that because apple has not announced specs yet so when they are announced the actual specs will replace what it currently says.

I take it you aren't accustomed to laptops?
The "fn" if for "function" – that top row has F1, F2, F3 etc on them besides the other icons. When you hold down "fn" you can use that top row as function keys. That is normal on a laptop – even PC's. You didn't expect a laptop to have dedicated funciton keys, did you?

Mine does. Since I use function keys far more than the brightness, sound, etc.. keys I set the setting in OS X to use them as real function keys.
But to the original poster, I believe the PowerBook 12 had the same FN key as well. At least to my memory. And the glossy screen is awesome. In real life, its never bad.

Sorry, I may not have made my sarcasm quite clear enough. I haven't really been waiting 9 years...I have had several pc desktops and an iBook G4 since i got my G3 powerbook. I gave the ibook to my sister and my P4 desktop to my dad in December with the intention of buying a MBP immediately. Then, with word of impending updates, I decided to start playing the waiting game. Now I am left with my G3 PB. I was poking fun at the people who are concerned about a couple of mhz here or there. All of these new machines are so fast it blows my mind. I can't wait to load photoshop with less than 10 bounces on the dock. :D
Now I'm just waiting for updates so I can get the most for my hard earned money...

PS: I'm no expert, I'm fairly new at all this so this is pure speculation
That is EXACTLY what I'm hoping for. I am tired of waiting (7 months) and as long as update comes with 17" LED I'm happy. Waiting for Montevina to future proof your laptop is stupid - Montevina warrants a speed bump, not an entire case redesign or as many like to call it: a "major update".
No, MBPs are due for the 'major update' NOW.

I work at Best Buy and I have been desperately waiting to get a macbook or MBP for a long time now. I decided to wait for Macworld to see what ole' Jobsy had to say. About a week before Macworld, these three SKU's titled "Macbook Pro 1" "Macbook Pro 2" and "Macbook Pro 3" showed up underneath the Apple section in mobile computing as well as another SKU titled "New Macbook". Well low and behold, Macworld comes around and the MBA is announced and when I look at the new SKU's, the "New Macbook" changed to the model number for the Macbook Air, and the price went from 1099 to 1799. But the other Macbook Pro 1, 2 and 3 SKUs are still there, and they have the same prices as the current MBPs and the same cost to Best Buy listed as the current MBPs. So I don't think BB has any advanced knowledge of any Apple models coming, but simply made a guess (which by the way I hope they are very correct on). An update, even if small, while keeping the same price point would be awesome. Also, I know this is my first post on here so it may seem unreliable, but I assure you, I wouldn't have wasted my time registering, and typing all this to feed you guys crap. I've been wasting a lot of time at work researching these new SKU's and I hope that we get some definitive news soon.
One last thing: the in-stock date, which as others has said is very unreliable, has been Feb 10th on all 4 SKU's since they showed up. Even the MBA was 2/10 before it was even announced.

Are there any "New iMac" or "iMac 1" or "New Mini" etc of some sort? If that isn't the case, then the rumors are true that Apple intended to release the MBPs at MWSF but delayed them. Else, why would BB stop at adding new SKUs for the MBA and MBPs and not the rest of the Mac line?
Also has the in-stock date for the MBA changed? Is the MBA available now at BB? If not what is the current in-stock date? Could it be possible that MBA and MBPs are arriving at BB on the same date?
Thanks,

I'm on a PowerBook G4 (Ti) and it's been through some tough times. The optical drive is dead, there are several cracks in the case, the battery is dead, the power connection is touchy, and the latch is busted and makes the poor thing think it's closed when it's not and vice versa (screen issues). Sadly, it's still a MUCH better computer than my work provides -- a Dell "laptop" circa 2001 that weighs about 10 pounds, takes literally 15 minutes to boot, and can barely open a Word document.
I was expecting an update in January and therefore put off the purchase until then... but now, I just am hoping that this poor thing doesn't die before I get the shiny new lappy on my porch. :D

Lol I'd be happy working on that PowerBook rather than my Windoze PC while I wait for a MBP update :p
