Apple today added new models of the iPhone and iPod touch which have double the memory. The new 16GB iPhone is available for $499, while the 8GB model remains at $399. The 32GB iPod touch comes in at $499 while 16GB and 8GB models are priced at $399 and $299, respectively.
"For some users, there's never enough memory," said Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of Worldwide iPod and iPhone Product Marketing. "Now people can enjoy even more of their music, photos and videos on the most revolutionary mobile phone and best Wi-Fi mobile device in the world."
The new iPhone and iPod touch models are available immediately.

no 3g?
Just as I thought. This was just the minor upgrade that was supposed to be announced at macworld to hold us over until iphone 2.0 is introduced. That phone is not coming out until later in the year. A lot of stuff in fact didn't get debuted at macworld like they were supposed to.
So you have a choice now. Buy the upgraded capacity version of the iphone 1.0 or touch now or wait til later in year for version 2 of the iphone.

I got a 16G Touch for Christmas a couple of months ago. I'm happy with it. I probably would not have gotten a 32 Gig one even if they had been out simply because of the price being a little higher than I like to spend on something like that.

Good stuff. I won't be buying in until May (unless Rogers in Canada announces first), so the added memory is a bonus for me. Yes, no 3G, but that's not going to happen with just a Store update. Major revisions will be tied to an event- that should be obvious to anyone. And double the memory for only $100 more. That's pretty good.

of course... the rumors were true.... and immediately... looks like apple shaping up again after the air incident... but why not 32gb phones?
Cause of the same reason as before.....price man. It would be too much for the 32GB plus the cell phone hardware. I suppose they could give consumers the choice but I don't think a $800.00 or $850.00 iphone would sell very well. And that would still be before the AT&T contract.
On a side note...lol I'm typing this from work right now and I've got a window right on broadway near battery park. The Giants parade is going to start at 11am and its already getting noisy. :D

That's more capacity than the 5G iPod (30GB, black) I picked up, what, a year and a half ago? But now, it's in flash...
I'm not at the point where I'm ready to get an iPod Touch or an iPhone just yet, but limited capacity has been my greatest concern about them, and it looks like it won't be an issue any more. :)

it's super tuesday. only quiet, non-world shattering releases today. new MBP, SDK, all that jazz starting next week. apple wants press, and there is no way a single camera (other than their own security cameras) are going to cupertino today with a neck and neck race for obama and hillary in CA.
Valid point! Probably it's just me & myself that have forgotten about Super Tuesday due to the mysterious Apple Store closing... The rest of the western world is discussing politics today.

Also, I think they should have annouced the 16GB iphone and 32GB ipod touch at macworld along with the annoucements about the wiggly icons N such. It would have added some meat to the other announcements. They could have always said availability wouldn't be immediate.

now that the touch has reached the capacity of the smaller ipod 5.5G, the question is, how much longer does the ipod classic last? IMO it will not see another update. They'll keep it around until the big ipod event in the fall at which time we'll see the touch go to 64 GB and the classic disappear. People will complain for a while because the high-end capacity is gone, but 64 GB will be enough for most people, and 128 will follow by '09. I've yet to see a single ipod classic in the wild - I think it's only a matter of time until the touch becomes the only full-sized ipod.

2nd week of February: 16GB iPhone, 32GB iPod touch
4th week of January: Pink iPod nano
3rd week of January: iPhone and iPod touch update, iTunes Movie Rentals, Apple TV (Take 2), MacBook Air
2nd week of January: 8-core Mac Pro

no 3g?
You will know about a 3G iPhone a long time before its release because it can't get through the FCC without it being made public.
FCC approvals generally take 6 months so it is at least 6 months away, and I'd personally say a bit more than that.

Dear complainers -
This thread is for iPhone. If you're here to insert your comment about the lack of MBP's, believe us, we've heard it. The only source you have that one is even in the pipe is MacRumors, which is hardly Apple's official outlet, so it's difficult to justify getting upset about something that Apple hasn't announced.
Twice the memory costs (about) twice as much. There has to be a price increase, as the price of this type of memory hasn't really gone down much in the last year. Hense, the price increase.
The reason for no 32GB iPhone yet is, if I recall, the radio for the cellphone takes up physical space, so there's not room for a second set of chips.
These are only my opinions.

Maybe? Remember that the big iPod Touch costs 2x more than the Classic, so the Classic still fills a niche at its price-point (IMO). :)

From the iPhone page on the Apple Store:
"Charges for international messages sent from the U.S. are 20¢ for Text Messages and 50¢ for Picture/Video Messages. Additional charges for premium messages and content apply. Messages over 300KB billed at additional 50¢ per message."
Since when does the iPhone send picture or video messages?? Could this be something new that's planning to be released with the SDK???

no 3g?
We all knew storage bumps were coming before an actual revision to the device. They have always done that & always will. It's just a typical, mid-cycle storage bump that ensures a bit more revenue before they break out a full fledged v2 - which will = even more revenue.
It's business.
Trickle.
iPhone v2 end of summer = 3G, 32 GB (if they haven't already bumped storage again, by then), slight tweak on the physical device (I am predicting bye bye chrome ring, hello touch-like bevel) with additional tweaks to the OS (in the form of more out-of-the-box apps).
Side note: it is interesting the iPhone went 16 GB whilst the touch went 32 GB. Then again, see my "trickle" comment.

Consider someone (lets call him Dan) who is locked into a Vodafone UK contract but wants and iPhone. Or maybe someone who doesn't want o2 (or AtandT) sucky tarriffs.
I unlocked and the only thing I regret is the divide it has caused and the rift in the international brotherhood of apple love. Oh, wait- who cares. Let people play with their own toys how they please. You're only jealous because I can play with my Balls on the train!

I was hoping they'd have dropped the 8 GB from the Touch. I may have to replace my 5.5G 30 GB, and I'm leery about getting an 8GB Touch, because it wouldn't hold all my stuff for long. I can't afford the higher-capacity models...

I just picked up a 16GB touch about a month ago. Boourns. I would have dropped the extra $100 on the 32.
This was the first thing I read when I woke up this morning. I'm glad to see they haven't just put the 16 in the 8GB's spot and price, and added the 32 at the 16's spot and price. In this way, I am content.
16GB iPhone though... that's pretty sweet. But, being in Canada, I'd have to jailbreak it, which apparently has proven to be a royal pain with the new 1.1.3 firmware that ships with the new phones.

Yes I know all that, but if you try to make it explicit to consumers that you're selling them a "WiFi mobile device" their eyes will glaze over and they'll walk away. Far better to keep referring to it as an iPod and quietly add more and more features (which is what they have been doing until now).

No doubt the future will be a true cross-over device as a recent analyst noted (see AppleInsider) a bit bigger than Touch with more connectivity running on the spanking new intel chips.
I read somewhere this week that the use of the iPhone has cut into the occasions when people take their laptop with them. I personally know this to be true in my experience.

it's super tuesday. only quiet, non-world shattering releases today. new MBP, SDK, all that jazz starting next week. apple wants press, and there is no way a single camera (other than their own security cameras) are going to cupertino today with a neck and neck race for obama and hillary in CA.
That's actually a great observation, making the quiet storage bumps seem even more well-timed/executed (aka: slide something in before the day is engulfed in more important news).

Awwww little baby go waaaaa, isn't that cute. ;)
Honestly how old old are some people here? An extra 16 GB for 100 bucks sounds pretty fair to me. Apple's prices are a little high but still pretty fair. Where else can you get 32GB flash in such a great piece of electronics?
Here's a smattering of 32GB devices, and you'll see that this much memory is still quite expensive, even in usb drive format.

You could always go for the Sansa. It's cheaper, and I'm sure it would make a nice pacifier...

There are many stores/restaurants that have unprotected wifi networks for their customers. Also I know of MANY residential areas that have wifi signal from the home owners network that I could leach off of in a pinch.
But there are also some cities that has made the whole city a wifi hot spot.

Nice, I didn't expect the 32GB ipod Touch
It's entirely logical. The touch has two memory chips to the iphones one. The touch has more room for the extra chip as it doesn't have the phone elements inside.
If they swopped the 128 Gbit chip on the iPhone for a 256 one (and that's all today was - a simple chip swop) - then they can do the same, twice, on the Touch.

Feb 5, 2008, 09:18 AM
now that the touch has reached the capacity of the smaller ipod 5.5G, the question is, how much longer does the ipod classic last? IMO it will not see another update. They'll keep it around until the big ipod event in the fall at which time we'll see the touch go to 64 GB and the classic disappear. People will complain for a while because the high-end capacity is gone, but 64 GB will be enough for most people, and 128 will follow by '09. I've yet to see a single ipod classic in the wild - I think it's only a matter of time until the touch becomes the only full-sized ipod.
I hope you're wrong, although I don't think your prediction is implausible. I not only hope the Classic stays, I'm hoping the Touch will get a hard drive. The main reason I don't have a Touch is that going from the 60GB of my 5G iPod to 16GB would feel like a big downgrade (the other reasons being: I have an iPhone and I'm short of cash). I for one love having ****loads of podcasts, films, photos, audio books and tv shows in my iPod--16 or 32GB just won't cut it.
I am surpised you haven't seen any Classics in the wild--I see them everywhere, although they seem to be less common than nanos and shuffles.

I'm hoping that by Christmas we'll have a 32GB 3G iPhone and that there'll be an official Apple iChat client that lets you use the data connection (either wifi or 3G) to connect to AIM instead of having to use text messages. Those are my requirements for getting an iPhone and I can't wait for it to happen.

Well, we all thought the 3G version was coming in June. That would have been the perfect time to increase the capacity to 16G.
Looks like Apple is trying to keep the sales momentum going. If they spin a new rev now, I think it is doubtful that we'll see a new iPhone in June.
Looks like the 3G will be coming much later than we think. If it does come in June, that wil piss off a lot of people that run out and buy a 16Gigger now.

Looks like someone may have done a cut and paste from a recent blurb by AT&T covering messaging in general.

I just bought my iPhone on January 19. Anyone know the policy Apple has for returning and upgrading?
I have found however that I am only using about half of my 8 gigs. I keep 2 movies on it at a time for plane flights. A couple hundred songs. Half a dozen podcasts and then my calendar and contacts.
16 gigs is what I was waiting for and then finally said the heck with it. I will be happy either way. The iPhone is the best gadget I have ever owned.

I have postponed iPod Touch purchase for a long time because where I live there are not too many public WI-FI hotspots that I could use. Today I coincidentally discovered this great piece of software today: http://www.joikuspot.com/. It turns my Nokia S60 phone to a WI-FI hotspot that iPod Touch could then use to connect to Internet!
Great, now I have to go and run to the nearest iPod store! :)

On what basis can you say that Apple were "supposed to" debut things at macworld. There is absolutely no reason that apple could not introduce new products at macworld...
Always good. US only though, strange.
I also spotted that. How odd.
No MacBook Pro. What gives! This is insane. I have been waiting for months. This is insane!!
If you've been waiting for months, you should have got one months ago. Or now, if you need it so badly your going insane.
According to Apple, its not happening in the UK yet. This seems strange, but they said the Touch and the iPhone had not yet been confirmed for the UK.
On engadget i read that they had a source in O2 who knew the 16GB iPhone was coming out today, and the price. Seems odd that it just hasnt. Maybe it wont be until 6.02pm...
i think now i start to hate 2 years contract with t-mobile. What if I already wanna upgrade my 8gb iPhone, so I in fact miss this opportunity.

WTF???
First off, it makes no difference in you're under contract, the iPhone is not subsidized so it costs the same regardless.
Secondly, Apple has zero obligation to make this process easy for you, who is hacking their phones to work in a way they did not intend. They amazingly enough are making them reasonably easy to do that to, but they certainly don't need to rethink their selling model, it's working out more than perfectly now.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there hasn't been a 500 dollar iPod ever, or at least in a long while.
Original 10GB iPod ws $499. iPod photo was $599. And if you adjust the price for inflation, it makes those model significantly more expensive than 32GB touch is. And the touch is the top-of-the-line iPod at the moment.
It's a bit much to pay for an mp3 player and a browser that works at Starbucs and while your sitting on the toilet in your own house.
Is it? The touch is a videoplayer. A musicplayer. Web-terminal. Email-client. Application-platform. Mapping-tool.... And there's free WiFi in lots of places. The price they are asking is more than reasonable.
But hey, if you feel it's overpriced, then don't buy it.

First, the thing that noticed me is that Apple now markets it as the "Wi-Fi Mobile Device", cleary from the earnings call.
Second, on www.apple.com the word "Touch" is in a light font now, don't know if that has been before, but it may hint to the "Air" (Wireless) stuff. Light font is now the font for wireless I think!
Third, don't think it will go any further then 32GB for a while, and that in the iPhone there is no 32GB because of space (radio hardware).
OR maybe Apple doesn't want so much in their inventory, too many products they must keep track of and have to sell, when it doesn't sell they keep the stock which means loss!
Fourth, I think the 3G iPhone will come later this year when Europe's full area has iPhones, or maybe earlier when the 3G chips come down in price, or earlier with the announcement of Italy, Spain and Switzerland.
Think it will also come with 3.2MP camera because of the new Broadcom chip.
Will definatly get a 3G version this year as the AT&T excecutive said.

32gb? we're getting closer to a reasonable amount of storage. lil pricey though.
I'm find I can carry a pretty good amount of Music, TV shows and Movies in 16gb, more than I could ever watch in a stiing or on a flight. I don't need to carry my whole library so its all good. Now if I found out the new 32gb touch's had more vivid, less washed out screens, then I'd be pissed

OK, technology never stands still and whatever you buy this week will be improved next.... Fair enough.
However, I think it's a bit mean of Apple to announce this so soon after Macworld. Like many, I see Macworld as an indicator of what's happening in the Apple product lineup, and purchasing decisions are often made around that time. In my case, I waited for Macworld before ordering my Touch to see if they'd bump the memory to 32GB. They didn't, I purchased, now they have.
I'll bet there are many others like me. Of course I'm still delighted with my Touch which still does the same today as yesterday, but this just serves as a reminder that Apple is a business first and foremost, and not one that rewards loyalty.

Okay.. several things...
1. I got my iPhone 8GB in September after the price drop, and I'm loving it. I'm sorta mad now that the 16 GB came out, but it's awesome at the same time. For a video of my iPhone unboxing go to YouTube and search up ShiggityShigg and you should see my iPhone unboxing video. I can't post a link because I'm on a Staples computer and they've retardedly blocked youtube.com
2. The iPod Touch 32 GB is a welcome addition to the iPod/iPhone family. I too agree that $100 extra for twice the storage is sorta steep, but fair at the same time. Also, why would you want a physical, moving parts HDD in the iTouch? I mean, I know HDD based devices have more storage, but they're much more breakable with constant use.
3. To those of you whining about no new displays or no new MacBook Pros, give it a break. There's a time for everything. They'll be released when they're ready. I'm not in the market for an MBP since I got an MB White a few months ago, but even if I was I'd wait it out, especially since I only make $8/hr.
With all that said, I should get across the shopping center to work to see if the assistant manager has arrived yet to open shop.

Now I'm beginning to see what Steve meant in his keynote when he mentioned that they were 2 weeks in and 50 to go.
Not a Tuesday has gone by without an announcement this year so far. Good times indeed.
What was released and/or announced on January 22 and 29?

Original 10GB iPod ws $499. iPod photo was $599. And if you adjust the price for inflation, it makes those model significantly more expensive than 32GB touch is. And the touch is the top-of-the-line iPod at the moment.
Is it? The touch is a videoplayer. A musicplayer. Web-terminal. Email-client. Application-platform. Mapping-tool.... And there's free WiFi in lots of places. The price they are asking is more than reasonable.
But hey, if you feel it's overpriced, then don't buy it.
Um, I've been able to do all these things on my PDA for years. And don't get me started about "mapping tools"! I don't mean to be rude, but get lost! Get lost in a place that doesn't have three Starbucks within a quarter mile radius of where you just got lost, that is :D

This covers off one of the two things I was going to buy in february. the other is a MacBook Pro. Don't hurt me.
Always good. US only though, strange.
Canada too, $519 for the iPod Touch. The $20 "not-american" tax is not high enough to justify a drive to Buffalo or Detroit for me. An iPhone, however, still involves smuggling and unlocking, or paying big bucks to shady guys on eBay.
I have definitely browsed on my iPhone while on the toilet. 'Not sure what that says, but it's the truth! :p
It says that Apple is missing the boat on marketing to the lucrative Craptop market. But then of course, they'd have to deal with complaints like "The new Craptop Pro is too heavy, and now my legs are asleep and I can't get down the stairs!"

I'm at Liberty Plaza and I'm going to head down about 10:30ish! Go Giants!
I'm also going to wait for newer features before buying another iPhone. 16GB is cool, but I can live with 8GB for now. :)

I doubt that they will make it to 128 or 64 by the time the iPhone 2 comes out, unless you expect it to come by some time in mid 2009. I hope that the iPhone gets unleashed from the AT&T network by the time they make a 32GB version, or a new phone all together that isn't tied down to such a bad network.
Right now my HTC Touch has been far more capable than the iPhones I have used, but of course, as is typical for Windows software, it's plagued by random freezes.
And for those whining about MBP users whining... stop it! We have cash for it, and the need for it, so if you don't have the cash, or the need, why are you commenting on our complaining? Just be happy with whatever book you're using and let us keep whining.

499? Ugh. Why not keep the same price with better features?
Because the morons will flock to Mac Rumors to moan about JUST buying a 8GB model for that price.
Cue the sound of a nail being hit squarely on the head. :D Let's be honest, is this upping of the capacity absolutely necessary? It's heavily desired by some for sure, however not a necessity. (Nor is my iPhone, but that's a whole other thread.) Criticism is going to come, no matter what decision Apple makes; this path is as safe as any.
The extra capacity for the iPhone is great to see as an option, but "only" having the availability of 8GB prior to today shouldn't have been a deal breaker for prospective iPhone owners. Sure, it would be great to have more of my iTunes library on my iPhone (8GB), but this limitation hasn't detracted from my experience. Perhaps the SDK will bring us some USEFUL apps to fill the capacity; only time will tell

now that the touch has reached the capacity of the smaller ipod 5.5G, the question is, how much longer does the ipod classic last? IMO it will not see another update. They'll keep it around until the big ipod event in the fall at which time we'll see the touch go to 64 GB and the classic disappear. People will complain for a while because the high-end capacity is gone, but 64 GB will be enough for most people, and 128 will follow by '09. I've yet to see a single ipod classic in the wild - I think it's only a matter of time until the touch becomes the only full-sized ipod.
I just got a classic 160 and I'll need all the room for lossless music. I hope to get 5000-6000 tracks on there.

I'll hear that. I could really go for the 32GB, but $499 is a bit much. I'll wait till it goes down to $399 (like 2 months) heh heh, or wait for the 64GB.

Yes, I thought 8gb was way more than I would ever need, but then they announced the SDK and I realized I didn't want an iPod touch to use as an iPod. I have a working iPod. I wanted mobile computing but not a laptop, so now I'm nervous about limiting myself with an 8gb. I'm buying in the next couple weeks by the way. $499 for the 32GB touch is not too bad IMO. I got a 40GB 3G iPod almost 4 years ago for that price and it's still working. And the touch _should_ last as long or longer since no moving parts. I'm not going to buy one, but if my 3G dies, it might be tempting

Jan 22nd - Pink iPod nano
Jan 29th - I'm not sure now, might have been a software update but looking at their PR site, it seems nothing was mentioned. Perhaps I was wrong.

Whine, whine, whine...
If only Apple:
(1) announced MacBook Pros today and not two weeks from now;
(2) added 3G and cut the price of a iPhone by $150;
(3) added a "real" graphics card to the MacBook;
(4) added "X" feature to the MacBook Air;
(5) timed its updates to coincide with my schedule because I am the most important person in the entire universe; and
(6) provided "Y" hardware/software/gadget for "Z" dollars.
How the news of the option of additional hard drive space is considered a negative is beyond me. The gripes are becoming annoying enough (like that Mac guy in the telly ads) that I may have to unswitch to gain back my sanity. Just kidding...I love my MacBook despite not having a "real" graphics card and not costing $300 less.

Eh, I'm glad the 32 is out there. I personally was holding off for a 32 version, but with no update at Macworld, I decided to jump on the 16 (with some Best Buy gift cards that I had gotten for x-mas). I think without a price drop, I still would have gotten the 16 (500 is a bit much for an ipod) but with luck Apple will move enough of these 32 GB models to increase demand and drive down flash prices even more.
Glad the iPhone went to 16 GB as well. Not bad for a random Tuesday update.

This is huge. 32GB is really the sweet spot as far as going with a flash-based iPod. Of course, you can always want more storage. But at 32GB there is much less compromise than 16mb - you can get a huge variety in music, carry your vacation photos, and load a movie or two all the while being able to browse the internet over wi-fi. Valentine's gift, anyone? (Hopefully they'll be available by then.)

However, I think it's a bit mean of Apple to announce this so soon after Macworld.
In the old days, the MW events were when Apple would introduce new products.
We had MW San Francisco, Boston, and Tokyo. Plus there were other events during the year that would usher in new products.
However, MW events have been limited to one. And now when a new product is available, Apple will introduce them rather than wait until the new MW event -- which now is one.
Technology changes. You cannot expect Apple to wait to introduce new products -- nor would I think that you would really want them to.
Anyhow, nice memory upgrades for the Touch and iPhone.

I'm not one of them, and I'm pretty sure that there are many many 16gb Touch owners that would agree with me. Very happy with the capacity I have, I don't run into storage problems - I take what I need and will realistically use. I have 10 movies, 1,200 songs (all 192kbit+) and 240 photo's, with Jailbroken apps over 3 pages and I still have just under 5gb spare. :)
However, I am suprised and pleased a 32GB version is out. Will quell the silly arguments I get about the storage being too 'small'. However the price... lol

What, you think just because you'll buy one it will be a instant hit? Dream on.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but there hasn't been a 500 dollar iPod ever, or at least in a long while. It's a bit much to pay for an mp3 player and a browser that works at Starbucs and while your sitting on the toilet in your own house.
Actually there was a $599 60 GB iPod Photo.

2008 is gonna be a year of frequent updates... :)
2nd week of February: 16GB iPhone, 32GB iPod touch
4th week of January: Pink iPod nano
3rd week of January: iPhone and iPod touch update, iTunes Movie Rentals, Apple TV (Take 2), MacBook Air
2nd week of January: 8-core Mac Pro
Hello,
Frequent updates is exactly what I thought when I heard Steve Jobs say at the Macworld 2008 Keynote, "All of this in the first two weeks, and we've got 50 more weeks to go."
Look at your list a little differently, instead of noting when things were announced, take a look at when they were released.
1 week in: Mac Pros.
2 weeks in: iPhone and iPod update.
3 weeks in: Pink iPod nano.
4 weeks in: MacBook Air shipping.
5 weeks in: Bigger iPhones and iPod Touch.
6 weeks in: ?????
...
I would not be discouraged if, today, you didn't see the update you wanted. We are only 5 weeks in, we've got 47 more to go. :D
Thanks,
James

I don't really care about the 16GB iPhone. I find that the 8GB has plenty of room. This does suck for those who got iphone's or an iPod touch for Christmas that wanted more storage. It seems like Apple purposely waited to avoid a large number of returns too.
This makes the touch more attractive to me, but I would still prefer at least 8GB more storage to make it a clean 40.
I would rather have had the MBP updated today. I've been waiting for that.

Why did he call it "WiFi Mobile Device" instead of iPod?
Silly little monkey! People want iPods not "WiFi Mobile Devices," if you try to rebrand it like that you'll kill it.
Incorrect. Market research shows iPod sales maturing and flattening. The repositioning is absolutely necessary to stay competitive with the emergence of so-called "convergence" devices. There's a great Wired magazine article about exactly this conundrum which Steve Jobs saw coming in 2003, which inexorably led to the development of the iPhone.
They still make iPods, but to cover all bases, the Touch has to be positioned differently so as to get people thinking about these devices in different ways... namely that the Touch has wi-fi which enables a degree of interactivity and convergence that all other iPod models are presently lacking. What's silly is to ignore the additional benefits and features the Touch has over the current lineup of iPods.
It's the same reason Apple dropped "Computer" from its name... not because they aren't going to make computers any more but because the nature of what computers do is changing considerably. To call convergence devices "computers" is understating their elegance.

I think announcement of the 3G next-gen iPhone will happen at the launch for the SDK. It won't come out till the summer though.
If that's true, the timing of this announcement makes perfect sense. It will be more than two weeks till the SDK, which means iPhones bought this week will not be eligible for return.

January '10 - 128GB, 192GB (death of 160GB iPod classic)
Don't think the classic is going anywhere fast, by the time January 2010 swings round 500GB+ drives will easily fit in an iPod and be cheap enough.

I agree.
I don't think HDs are going to cease to be used anytime in the near future. The cost to storage ratio is not there yet. It will be someday, but not for 5-10 years at the earliest.

i'm tempted by the 32gb - i'm in the states in april - seems like a great opportunity to take advantage of the awesome pound/dollar exchange rate!!

Is it? The touch is a videoplayer. A musicplayer. Web-terminal. Email-client. Application-platform. Mapping-tool.... And there's free WiFi in lots of places. The price they are asking is more than reasonable.
But hey, if you feel it's overpriced, then don't buy it.
Well, the N800 is about $250 these days, add $100 for 16Gb and you get $350, and the N800 has the added advantage of Bluetooth - meaning you can browse the web via your phone if you're not within Wifi range, and you can hook up a BT keyboard. (There's also an N810 model which has a built-in GPS system, but costs around $500)
And the N800 is all of those things you say, and is open, expandable, has a replaceable battery, in fact pretty much the only downside is the crappier UI.
If Nokia fixed the UI and really started marketing the hell out of it, I think the iPod Touch wouldn't attract the supporters it's getting at the moment.

If you truly did just buy it last night just return it and buy the larger size.

Hello,
Frequent updates is exactly what I thought when I heard Steve Jobs say at the Macworld 2008 Keynote, "All of this in the first two weeks, and we've got 50 more weeks to go."
Thanks,
James
This is precisely what I was thinking, so here are the possible options:
6 weeks in: Mac OS X 10.5.2
7 weeks in: MacBook Pro updates
or maybe the other way around. Just a thought, either way - it's all looking good.

What's a PDA?
Oh, that's right, another dying piece of technology that never really took off.
But in all seriousness, thanks for helping set the market for things that consumers really like, such as the iPhone. :D
Um, so why are you (and I don't necessarily mean "you" personally) clamoring for the SDK to be released? Oh, that's right -- because you want the iXXXXX to finally get some PDA capabilities. Sheesh.

Apple has a return policy that allows returns if there's an upgrade within a certain window.
One day qualifies.
Don't open it if you ordered from Apple.
If you got it from a store, check the store's policies.

For all of you yelling at Apple and saying you're pissed, because you just bought one, what the heck do you want Apple to do? NEVER update anything? YAY! Now what I bought will ALWAYS be the best thing available from Apple! Should Apple call EVERYONE who bought an iPhone or iPod Touch and ask when it's OK to upgrade the line?

I'm sorry if this has been asked before but I am so ticked at my stupidity. I should know better than to buy an Apple product on a Monday.
I purchased the 16GB Touch yesterday and now would like to return it for store credit towards the purchase of a 32GB.
The package has been opened, but the protective film is not off yet. I have synced it and put some music on for my morning commute but nothing more.
Can anyone tell me my options? I assume there is a restocking fee and everything else in the packaging is still in near perfect condition. I've owned this Touch for just over twelve hours!
(as I see shortly after posting, the question has been asked already...my bad)

It always amazes whent the rumor sites are so confident in something and it doesn't show up. And then something huge like this happens without so much as a whisper. Where was the Apple intel this time?
I lose faith in the mac rumor community's ability to keep us one step ahead of Apple's home page.

yeah, but now i'm trying to figure out if i want to spend $530 after tax at the apple store, instead of the $360 I bought the 16gb touch for... argh. i mean, i can get away with 16gb, but i could load the 32gb up with movies... it would be amazing. with the 16gb i guess i could just load a couple movies on while i'm home and switch them on an off as i need them... but damn that 32gb is so tempting.... argh.... so much money...

I hope the next iPhone is 32GB. Size is the only reason I've held off this long. I'd say 32GB is the minimum to be considered a true iPod today. I don't like the idea of having to add/delete my music all the time. I don't think I'd want to store all my movies/TV shows on an iPhone so adding and deleting them is fine...I just want to be able to store all my music and still have room for a movie or two and have room for the e-mails/voice mails. I keep all my music in 256kbps format and currently am over 22GB. I still have a ways to go before I complete my collection. I anticipate having 3,500 songs and be pushing 32MB in the next few months. Sucks though that the touch will always be ahead of the iPhone in size. Seems the iPhone needs the bigger drive or at least make them the same size and price accordingly for the phone feature

If I'm right that's £250 in the UK? Well, tbh, our 16GB's are £270, which is around $540, and our new, 32GB's are £329, which is around $660. You're lucky :/
No 32GB iPt in the UK store yet. Wonder how much it'll be? Don't need that much memory myself but quite a few people here have been hoping for it so great!!

There have been multiple $499 iPods...but you're right, not for a while.
I have definitely browsed on my iPhone while on the toilet. 'Not sure what that says, but it's the truth! :p
The iPhone eliminates the need to keep magazines next to the toilet...what a great invention.

32GB Touch, a tad pricey? It is cheaper than we pay for the 16GB here in the UK. I know, enough moaning, our economy is look pretty good compared to the US.

Exxxsssellent.......this is what I was hoping for. Twas the only thing holding me off an iPhone. Its now quite beyond what I was hoping to spend (after discounts & gift cards - $220) but hey ideally iPhones would all be given out free and there would be peace on earth. I'll have to come up with some extra dough.
And to those people who are telling others what they do and don't need in terms of capacity, please just don't bother. How do you know what my needs are. Its great that you're okay switching out music etc. to accomodate your 8gb iPhone. But for me, thats an huge inconvenience, I'm not about to plan ahead to what I want to listen to that day or the next. It might be easier with videos but with about 10 gigs of music, I'd rather not spend the time in sifting through it every week or day or whatever. If I was okay with that I would have gotten the 1 gig shuffle ages ago and still be using it.

OK,
I have called the local Apple store here (Bethesda Row) and they said I can take back my 16GB that I bought yesterday for store credit and get the 32GB.
They did mention the re-stocking fee...hopefully I can get it waived when I get there.

The problem with apple updates is this.
Its not a pleasant surprise when they come out with something because usually people have been pissed off for months that its not been released yet so when it finally does come out everyone is like FINALLY but then the price goes UP and they are pissed off anyways, and rightfully so in my opinion. Apple is VERY slow with updates and when they come they are usually months too late.

Is the current iPhone hardware capable of video (meaning it's just a software limitation at present)?
I was expecting photo messaging to be an imminent upgrade, but video would be fantastic!
