Okay, I ran Xbench 1.1.3 on the new 12" iBook G4 800 Mhz, 256 Mb of RAM. And yes, it has the G4 7455.

on what do you base that?

and do you say it to imply that ibooks are unfairly portrayed as slower than they really are, or to say that ibooks are slow?

I remember running xBench on my little 12 inch 600MHz iBook, and it did really bad.

My powermac G4 867 on the other hand got 105 and i have had it for 2 years.

I think iBooks are great for writing, I use mine for writing screenplays all the time. But if you want something for the long run i recommend a powerbook.

we appreciate your ethusiasm, but this post really had nothing to do with anything related to this thread.

But, on the ibook note, I personally think xBench gives lower marks to G3 processors. That G4 ibook, however, is pretty concurrent with other G4 scores at that range, however not G4's with even that good of graphics nor DDR RAM. Also, since xBench is dual proc aware, it will give duals higher scores. Also, for that test, were you running your ibook with the energy saver prefs to highest (from reduced)? That may help your score.

One run with one iBook does not mean that all iBooks are doomed to be slow. In fact, the latest G3 iBooks are pretty quick.

I was wondering about your signature--what's a macantosh?

The Xbench tests were run with the energy saving preferences set at maximum performance. People on these forums need to stop assuming that the new iBooks are suddenly such a huge leap forward, and that they will cut into PowerBook sales. The last generation of G3 iBooks scored just slightly lower on the Xbench tests. The 900 Mhz iBook ranged between 50-55 while the new 800 Mhz scored just a 60. Obviously, the 14" iBooks with 933 Mhz and 1 Ghz will score higher, but they probably won't come too close to the new, or even old 12" PowerBooks. The 867 Mhz 12" PowerBook scored maybe 70-75 on Xbench and the new 1 Ghz 12" PowerBooks scored in the low 90s. The new PowerBooks are much faster, and the iBook is no replacement for it.

There have been some xbench results posted for the new G4 ibook at macnn that are far better than that. That being said, after some hands on, the 1ghz 12" still feels faster.

that wasn't my experience. i had a 900 mhz with maxed RAM and it scored a 43. Now, that was on the low end of the scores, but there's no way 50-55 was typical.

I had an ibook 600 as well (went from that to the 900 now to a 12" PB), and I'm not surprised it did badly. It only had an 8 MB video card; it must have done horribly on the graphics tests.

The PM 867 may be a little old, but it still destroys an ibook 600 (and even the new 12" ibook G4) in so many ways... clockspeed, G4 vs. G3, graphics card, HD speed, cache... everything basically.

BTW, I did feel that xbench was unfair to my ibook 900. It was very fast and snappy with just about everything I did, and although my new PB is a lot faster, I don't think the difference is as great as xbench suggests (43 for ibook, 87 for PB, both on jaguar).

edit #2: i opened the same Xbench file using version 1.1.3, and it changed the overall score from 63.10 to 51.21. hm.
