Apple announced (http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2008/02/12aperture2.html) Aperture 2, the next major release of its photo editing and management software. The new version features over 100 new features with a streamlined user interface and entirely new image processing engine. Aperture 2 also introduces new imaging tools for highlight recovery, color vibrancy, local contrast definition, soft-edged retouching, vignetting and RAW fine-tuning, and lets users directly post their portfolios on the .Mac Web Gallery for viewing on the web, iPhone, iPod touch and Apple TV.
“Many of the most respected photographers on assignment all over the world trust Aperture to organize, edit and deliver their images,” said Rob Schoeben, Apple’s vice president of Applications Product Marketing. “With its simpler interface and lower price, anyone can take full advantage of Aperture’s power.”
Aperture is now priced at $199 and available immediate through the online Apple Store (http://store.apple.com).

Hrmm...anybody know how this will work...
I just purchased the academic version of Aperture 1.5. I haven't opened it yet as I am going to be receiving my new Mac Pro today. Will I be eligible for the upgrade ($10)? Or will I need to return it and buy the full-version (an additional $50)?
It appears that there is no longer an academic version, only the full $200 version.

True, but I am not sure if that applies to the academic version of Aperture 1.5.
I called Apple, and they told me that I should return the unopened software and repurchase the new version. I assumed that would be the case. That is one of the shortcomings of academic licenses.
I guess I should be happy that I can get my money back. This time I am going to order the full version now that it is only $200.

2 1/2 hours the store is down. When it comes up, the Aperture page is still 1.5.6. Then, when the aperture page is updated a while after, [added: the videos don't work, and] the download is still 1.5.6, not 2.0. And when the 2.0 dl is ready, they send you an old serial?

Even though Time Machine issues have been fixed, is it better to use Aperture + Time Machine, or disable Time Machine for the Aperture Library, and use the Vault feature instead? There seems to be some unnecessary overlap here.

As far as I'm concerned Aperture does not work with Time Machine: you cannot enter Time Machine in Aperture and step back through your library looking for images you deleted or previous versions. You might be able to recover the files at a Finder level, but that's not really a good solution...

Feb 12, 2008, 09:47 AM
Has the issue with Time Machine been addressed yet? (i.e. that Aperture creates a single large database file, a separate copy of which gets copied to the TM drive each time you make a change in Aperture).

Well, apparently (http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html) the cameras that were added most recently will only work with 10.4.11 or 10.5.2 AND Aperture 2:
* Cameras and camera backs followed by an asterisk require Aperture 2 with Mac OS X Tiger v10.4.11 or Mac OS X Leopard v10.5.2 or later.
Pssh, I got the 1.5.6 serial number too. In fact, I've applied for the serial number three times now (twice with one email address, once with another address) and have got the same serial number in each instance! Perhaps there’s only one trial serial number? (I'm not going to post the full serial number here though for obvious reasons, but mine ends in …NVJ-170-RED-WDH.)
I'm pretty excited about the new Raw decoding. It definitely looks like they've heavily drawn inspiration from ACR/Lightroom. I played with Lightroom last week for fun and like the Raw decoding very much, but still dislike the workflow as much as I did when I tried the original beta.
Also, they've finally brought in lens metadata! And the ability to see whether you're in Onscreen Proofing mode on the main window! And basic DNG support so if you've got some spiffy new camera whose Raw format isn't yet natively supported, you can convert the Raw files to DNG and work on those in Aperture! The application seems like it’s become competitive again: I'm glad I've stuck with it.
I really should be writing about Euripides and Seneca, but I seem to have been distracted…

Not true. All of the cameras for which "OS-level" support was added in 10.5.2 still don't work in Aperture 1.5.x (despite Preview and iPhoto being able to decode the images). So unless they decide to push out a final 1.5.7 point release, owners of the D3/D300 and the other newly added cameras will have to either upgrade to 2.0 or move to Lightroom or another converter.

Aperture RAW support has always been tied to the OS. This release does not change that. You will not get d300 support from Aperture 2.0 on 10.4.11.

It's good to see this. I'm mostly happy with 1.5 at the moment, but will probably upgrade when I have some extra cash.
There was a feeling among Aperture users that Apple had mostly abandoned Aperture, and was only going to issue minor updates for the rest of its lifetime. But I guess this release thankfully proves us wrong.

Sheesh, compuguy, you don't get the joke, do you? He just emphasized he meant it the first time as sarcasm, since some other guy said this thread would be littered with comments such as "but where is my MPB?".

Aperture RAW support has always been tied to the OS. This release does not change that. You will not get d300 support from Aperture 2.0 on 10.4.11.
I didn't say that I would. I simply said if they build it into 10.5.x then they can piss off because not everyone moved to Leopard and some who have moved back to Tiger. ;)

10.5.2 added support to Aperture 1.5 and iPhoto for a lot of new cameras. Which one in particular is supported by Aperture 2.0, but not Aperture 1.5 running on 10.5.2?
I wish that were true, but it isn't.
Even after installing the 10.5.2 update the new cameras were only supported for iPhoto, finder, preview, etc. Not Aperture.
So if people like myself who have one of the newer cameras want to continue using Aperture with it, we have no choice but to upgrade.

Well, apparently (http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html) the cameras that were added most recently will only work with 10.4.11 or 10.5.2 AND Aperture 2:
Pssh, I got the 1.5.6 serial number too. In fact, I've applied for the serial number three times now (twice with one email address, once with another address) and have got the same serial number in each instance! Perhaps there’s only one trial serial number? (I'm not going to post the full serial number here though for obvious reasons, but mine ends in …NVJ-170-RED-WDH.)
I got the exact same one. Four times.

That's very strange: it's certainly not been the way with any prior update to RAW support. As soon as the OS support was added for my 400D Aperture supported it without any update to Aperture...

Apple announced (http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2008/02/12aperture2.html) Aperture 2, the next major release of its photo editing and management software. The new version features over 100 new features with a streamlined user interface and entirely new image processing engine.
I hope the "over 100 new features" isn't just a padded number like what Apple did w/ Tiger where every single widget was counted as a new feature. But then again, I don't use Aperture so I don't really care.

So now does Apple have the upper hand with the release of this compared to Adobe's Lightroom. Aperture 2.0 looks like it has taken some cues from Lightroom and a little bit from iPhoto '08. Thoughts?

Get this, my local CompUSA that is going out of business has a couple of copies of Aperture 1.5 for 30% off retail ($299)...$209.30. That's like $10 MORE than the current 2.0 and that doesn't count the $9.95 upgrade price you'd have to pay just to get to v2.0. Something tells me that until that percentage drops to 40% off it wouldn't make much sense for anyone to buy them.

You paid a price you considered fair for a product. You still have that product and it still works. Therefore you have no right to complain at all. You should think yourself very lucky they offer you the $9.95 deal at all.
If I buy a car and a few weeks later they release an updated model can I pay 1/20th of the cost of the new model to upgrade? I don't think so.

Couple of questions for professionals (photographers) utilizing Aperture:
First - I'm a pro completely using Adobe LR & CS3. Can any of you point to a website with direct comparisons of the two products LR & Aperture?
Second - I'm looking for a solution for digital asset management. The Apple website really doesn't focus too much on it's capabilities as a "library management tool" other than saying it's powerful enough to handle it. Are any of you using Aperture for this purpose?
Aperture 2.0 looks promising and I'm looking for a tool that has Lightroom's capabilities but also a strong management tool to catalog the 10's of thousands of images I'm creating yearly. Something LR lacks right now.

Compare any of CompUSA's so called "20-50%" off sale prices. They've jacked them all up and put them on sale so that you are still paying close to retail. eg. 30" ACD for $1499. You can get that from Apple refurb store including a guarantee (and it's not been running as a store display 24/7). No, CompUSA's Apple software/hardware including Aperture is still only 10% off. It would be better to find an EDU %.

If I wasn't soooooo deep into Lightroom. Once you learn the keyboard shortcuts, it feels really natural to do anything and everything in Lightroom.
I didn't like Aperture before, and one of those reasons is because I didn't see why Aperture required a dedicated video card when an app like Lightroom runs quicker on the same hardware, and is released at around the same time. (.....and no, I'm not buying a MBP just to use Aperture, since my 13" MacBook is otherwise perfect)

Perhaps, but not in this case. The price on aperture was 299 before, and they were giving a 30 percent discount. That amounts to a tad over 200 dollars.

So glad they updated Aperture. iPhoto was starting to look more sophisticated than Aperture 1.5. I know professional photographers love this app, but I'm sure I do...perhaps 2.0 will change that. Having worked at the Apple store, I can tell you that most customers who asked about it become disinterested when they learn it won't replace or even partially fill the shoes of Photoshop. I got to where I would describe it as iPhoto's big brother. Problem is, they (apple) just made iPhoto too good...and not too many people that use iPhoto yern for much more than it offers, except for better image editing capabilities. Aperture doesn't provide that, so no one upgrades.
Alas, in the end it was used simply as a workflow tool for the professional, as Apple intended. I personally wish I could replace Photoshop, no more actual editing that I do.

I do not think that we will see any real world comparisons here within the first few hours of the release of 2.0. Especially for us who us programs like this to their fullest potential.
I think the only way we can see the real differences b/w the two current versions of each product is to do the same identical project workflow on each. See if there are any differences maybe it is just a matter of preference and what you do with your photos after you take them.
How will 2.0 work with PsCS3 is another big question.
Only time will tell.

True. But also consider the hundreds of companies with a total employee count in the millions who have access to Employee Purchase Programs along with the hundreds of thousand of government employees who can access the government purchase program. Now multiply all those people who buy on behalf of a spouse or child and I bet you're in the tens of millions who have access to a discount that isn't an education discount.

Just installed. You can't use your previous library in the trial. It tells you to either create a Trial Library or Quit.
Of course there is a workaround but it's a bit dangerous so you best be backing it up.
I'm simply going to "Show the Contents" of the original Aperture library and then drag all the files into the new Trial Aperture Library.
Once I receive the retail box and my serial, it should all transfer over well. Should.

Who knows. It might be worth a try.
Still, certain employee discounts and what have we, really doesn't count in this sense. Does it. The retail price was 299 as you full well know, and they took thirty percent off of the price. At least in this instance there's know cheating. If you – yesterday _ could find it cheaper than that, you had to really look around. It was thirty percent. I don't know of any employer discounts that would give you that much of a percentage on software, unless needed for work. And if it's needed for work, the employer better pay the full amount. Anyway, it doesn't matter that much. I'm merely saying that there wasn't any cheating involved in that discount. Now, however, they have to really put them on sale. Down to below 190 dollar to get them out the door.

When are the MBP's gonna be released? This is insane.
I'm not quite sure why many are so upset that there is not an updated MacBook Pro. From what I have read, most of the people who are complaining about wanting a new MBP already have one. I'd hate to see your credit card bill if you treat everything that way. When your car reaches 10,000 miles do you complain that the 2009 model is not out yet? Any MBP is still a very good machine, its not like you are trying to use a PowerBook G3.
So, having said that, please enlighten me as to the compelling reasons why everyone is demanding new MBP's. What new features can you not live without? Thanks.

I created the trial library and I'm going to have to move all the package contents into the new Library. It's the long way to do it, but I'd rather not have to wait for the new disk.
I ordered it over the phone to see if they could provide me with a retail serial upon my purchase but I have to wait for the actual disk to arrive.
The associate warned me before hand that:

I like the sound of the new feature set. I use Aperture quite a bit and will be very tempted to upgrade - but how much is an upgrade going to cost me?
Edit:
Hmmm. $99 for the upgrade. Ouch.
$99 seems pretty good to me. Who else offers pro product updates for $99 - certainly not Adobe.

It's a shame we have to pay to get support for the new cameras :(
Not like this in the alternative solutions out there.
I would have probably bought the update just to get the feature, but to have to buy it because of some marketing ploy is just shameless!
The RAW upgrade is built into MacOS X 10.5.2 - will that not work with Aperture 1.5?

I applaud Apple for making digital photo software, but I'm curious to know what the engineers are thinking when they did. It requires a 2 ghz processor? 2 gb of ram?
I know there's two camps here--the Lightroom camp and the Aperture camp. No need to start another debate about this. But why does Lightroom require so much less horsepower to run? I can run Lightroom on my old G4 iBook when I'm out traveling light. Sure, it's slow, but at least it works. Why does Aperture require so much firepower?

Get this, my local CompUSA that is going out of business has a couple of copies of Aperture 1.5 for 30% off retail ($299)...$209.30. That's like $10 MORE than the current 2.0 and that doesn't count the $9.95 upgrade price you'd have to pay just to get to v2.0. Something tells me that until that percentage drops to 40% off it wouldn't make much sense for anyone to buy them.
Wow that is stupid! The manager of your CompUSA should have gotten into his time machine and travelled to today to see the price drop and priced the product appropriately. Sheesh!

Nope.
http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html
"* Cameras and camera backs followed by an asterisk require Aperture 2 with Mac OS X Tiger v10.4.11 or Mac OS X Leopard v10.5.2 or later."
The asterisked cameras are the ones that had RAW capability built into OS 10.5 yesterday. On the bright side, this seems to imply that Tiger users owning the new cameras need only buy Aperture 2.0 and not Leopard too, i.e. RAW support has been essentially decoupled from the OS.

Thanks
I'd also be very interested in seeing an answer to this post including raw support comparison.
There was a pretty good side by side comparison in a dual article. One guy was an Aperture user the other a Lightroom user and they tried the other camp's application and gave very honest reviews. Each app had it's own strengths and weaknesses and seem to come out about equal:

This is a big deal for Apple. They really needed to get this out. When it comes right down to it there is only one reason to buy a Mac. and that is so you can run software. For many people Aperture was the reason they bought a Mac. Before today there is a lot of grumbling about "why bother with buying a Mac, Aperture is a dead or dieing product."
We will still have to see if Apple is able to keep up with new cameras. People hate to become dependent on Aperture it will always lag months behind the others in support for new cameras
The price drop should help too.

If it's true that in order to use Nikon D3/D300 RAW files in Aperture, we are forced to buy Aperture 2,then Apple is playing a kind of extortion game. It's unconscionable that they would allow the Finder, iPhoto '08, and Preview to recognize and work with D3/D300 RAW and purposely not permit the existing version of Aperture to read those same files.
So instead of allowing the existing version of Aperture to read it, which it should be able to because the less sophisticated iPhoto can, Apple is forcing Aperture users to pay the $99 upgrade price. This is just insult upon injury. Not only did we have to wait three months for OS X to recognize D3/D300 files, but now that OS X can read those files natively, for some reason the current Aperture was not modified to do so and thus we are being coerced into upgrading to Aperture 2.
This is dirty pool and it is something that I truly did not expect from Apple. I have been an advocate of theirs since the first Macintosh came out in 1984. Never would I have thought that they would do something like this. This is a low and petty move unbecoming of a company like Apple.

That is because the link on the homepage isn't updated to take you to the new Aperture 2 page for the Academic Store.

Also, I wish it was still an option to have the main tool set on the title bar area. It might seem pedantic but I only have 1440 x 900px to play with - some users will have even less.

Yeh and why doesn't OS9 support RAW - thats what really pisses me off.
Software gets 'old' in the eyes of developers (or maybe the management) - the latest iPhoto can use these RAW files and so can the latest Aperture, thats the way these things go.
But whats $90 - if you're photography-mad enough to HAVE to use RAW then the price is worth it surely?

Apple probably thought that since this is a PRO Application that people wanted Aperture 2 with the new features, just as much (if not more) as they wanted RAW support.
In my opinion, and not being a "professional" photography but more of a "hobbyist," I am not bugged to have to pay for Aperture 2 just to get RAW support.
If you look at in the way that you are paying $200 for RAW support then you will be excited to see all the "FREE" new features and everything else that is included in Aperture 2

I been waiting a long time to get Aperture but specifically version 2.
Looks like it adds a lot of the photo editing features that made lightroom a favorate of some of the photograpphers.
Based on my understanding Aperture was prefered by those that wanted the organizational power of Aperture. Lightroom was prefered by those that needed the photo editing capabilites of Lightroom. This moves Apperture closer and may bring some lightroom users to Aperture.
Great news in my book.

Everything else just seems like they just moved it around, Also, why they hell did they make tabs for the adjustments, metadata, and library? That was one of the big things I hate about LightRoom. Feels a snappier on my PB G4 (1.67 GHz, Jan 05). Less system lag, makes me want to switch back to Aperture (I currently use Lightroom because of performance). Hear hear. I honestly don't believe if this is the case it will remain the case. I can easily see Apple purposely dragging their butts as far as getting an update to Aperture 1.5 that reads the new formats- compounded by their usual policy of stone silence - with the sole intention of herding people into paying the $99. Most people would upgrade regardless, but you're absolutely 100% correct that this would be completely sleazy for a company like Apple.
I'll wait and read up. I was an Aperture fan.. tried Lightroom and there was no contest- LR had better retouching tools and ran better. I did prefer Aperture's file management but not enough to stay. In Aperture both the photo's and the database can be stored in one container which acts as a file, as opposed to LR where the DB file is separate from imported image files. The result is files end up all over the place with LR if you don't manage them. No biggie in the grand scheme.
So it should be fun to see what Aperture 2.0 has to offer. Switching back would be a royal pain in the butt- so it's pretty unlikely I'll upgrade unless there's something I can't live without in A2.0, but never the less it's great that Apple is moving forward, albeit somewhat obnoxiously.
I will say this much... on the Mac Pro (early 2008 2.8) Aperture 1.5 is very responsive compared to my G5 2.0, even with just the 2600 card. I daresay it's even more snappy than LR on the new machine. LR seems to be taking more time to render previews, i.e. click an image and see pixelly looking preview for about 3 sec with the "hold on, I'm working on it" message. I haven't had a chance to really play with either yet on the new machine other than just getting them up and registered etc.
I'll post my long winded thoughts on 2.0 when I get my hands on the demo.

I did the Aperture Checker on my computer before installing the Trial version (bored while waiting) and it said that I was able to get Aperture 2. I am not 100% sure but I am PRETTY sure I have the Academic of Aperture 1.5
All the little checker does is to confirm that your machine has the hardware requirements to run Aperture. It does not check the number.

Ha, the code they send you for the trial is for 1.5!
Ah well, I suppose I will have to request another one later.
Has anyone had any luck with the trial serial number?
The one I got was for 2.0. But you have to be running 10.5.2 in order to install it.
Interesting!

Try this:
That was the first thing I tried after SharkySharky replied.
The good news is that it seems to have fixed itself! Not sure when - I've just been doing some work in 1.5.2 ...but it's fixed. :D
I have to admit, using 1.5.2 after having played with 2.0, there didn't seem like much difference.
To be honest, the new usable straighten tool may be enough to warrant the upgrade!

Since the product is now selling for 199, tell the manager to give you the 30% or 40% based on the new 199 price and not the old price.

I would like to know this as well. Sometime, (as with Final Cut Studio) Apple looks the other way on acedemic upgrades simply to broaden their upgradeable user base.
If anyone gets confirmation that an academic serial number is eligible please post!
There is a program you can download from Apple's Aperture web site. It says "Run this to see if you can upgrade, before you place your order". It would seen that running this program would once and for all answer this question. Try it and see if your academic version is upgradeable. No need to guess.

this didn't work for me. Keeps saying "Imported 0 Items." Anyone else have that problem?
To answer my own question--It appears that in the trial version, you will not be able to import your 1.x libraries en masse into Aperture 2. You will have to pull individual projects out of your old library and import them into the trial library. You need the full version to actually update your library to version 2.0. Kind of stupid, IMHO, as I have a full backup of my 1.x library. But whatever, my full version will be in the mail soon...

Apple choose a feature set different from Adobe's. For example in Aperture I can display 16 raw images at once on two large 30" monitors and then move a slider and adjust something about how all 16 images are converted and see then all change in real time. That is hundreds of megabytes of data being updated at what? 30 to 15 times per second. They did this by leveraging the processing power inside the GPU.
Apple made the call to allow features like this knowing full well that they'd cut out users with low end equipment. Apple does want to sell you new computers.
Adobe does not sell computers and wanted the larges possible target customers base and had nothing to gain be cutting out potential customers.

Aperture runs fine on a Macbook, and nowhere does it say it requires a dedicated video card
runs "fine" is very subjective. I have a 2.16ghz iMac touted with 3GB of ram. I find it "ok" to use. Lightroom is faster for me. I could not imagine aperture on the laptop w/o a dedicated video card. that's why I was wondering if Aperture 2 got any faster. I like the management of Aperture, but w/ Apple not getting into the normal headless mac market, I may be switching back to a Windows platform with my next computer, and hence jumping to Lightroom.
But if they proved they actually make it run faster on the same hardware, I'd be more willing to stick my neck out on it. Altho, I'm not too fond of this forcing to upgrade just to support newer raw files.. I hope this was just an oversight.

Why are so many people under the impression you need a graphics card to run aperture. It is simply not true. Apple recommends a graphics card, but the minimum system requirements clearly state you can run it on a Macbook, which as you know, has no dedicated graphics card. Now, how 'well' it will run on a non-graphics card system is up for debate, but it will run. I run it on my Macbook and it runs fine.

Anyone confirm yet if you can upgrade a V1 Academic version for $99? Apple's website doesn't say anything about not being able to.

To upgrade to Aperture 2, you'll need a Mac with Aperture 1.5 installed and a valid serial number. You should download and run the Aperture 2 Compatibility Checker before ordering the upgrade to make sure your Mac meets the minimum system requirements for Aperture 2.

That is because the link on the homepage isn't updated to take you to the new Aperture 2 page for the Academic Store.
Just do a search for Aperture 2 and it will take you to the correct page. It's $179 BTW. Not that great of a discount IMO
What I am curious about is if I currently have an academic version if I can pay the $99 upgrade price to get Aperture 2 instead of having to buy a whole new version Academic or Standard ( or Pro I guess :p )
Apple very clearly states that Academic versions are NOT upgradeable. Since the current discount is only $21 compared to $150 discount for the previous version buying the Academic version is rather stupid unless you never plan to upgrade in the future. In other words saving $21 now will cost you $100 in the future because you will have to buy the full version for $200 instead of upgrading for $99

Hmm, I just realised the Airbook is then out of the game as a light editing machine to bring along with all your lenses and whatever else pro photographers bring along. At least if the tool of choice is Aperture.

I'm working on software right now. I may finish today or maybe tomorrow. I won't know untill later. The art that is broke will either be triveal to fix or will take about a day to re-write. I bet the MBA SSD will run Aperture better than the MacBook. Just a guess, but most of the lag for Aperture on my computer is from loading my 8MP RAWs from the hard drive.
Not that it matters too much, though, since you can only hold a handful of RAW images on a 64 GB SSD... my own library is trim at 10 GB, and I would hate to devote that much space to photos on the MBA.
Although, If you can afford a nice big external USB drive, I would expect that the MBA with SSD will be awesome for aperture, really. I mean, you can keep the masters you are currently working on as well as all the previews for your Library on the SSD, and then as it gets bigger, you can relocate old masters to a spare library on an external drive. Apple makes that fairly easy.

I did some work experience with a pro photographer who had a Mac Pro (don't know which model) with 8GB of RAM and he was frequently waiting for his system to catch up when adjusting images.
To add some sense of perspective, he often ended up with multi-gigabyte PSDs. How? Well when you're combining a few exposures from your 48MP hasselblad you'll begin to understand.
An area where I can really see the Mac Pro's horsepower being used is when batch processing your finished photos to hand them off to clients as JPEGs / TIFFs.

That sucks, but it is worth pointing out that Apple is not alone in that behavior. Newer versions of Camera Raw do not work with Photoshop CS2, for example. The problem is that camera technology is moving at a much faster pace than image processing technology. By the time a processing software company such as Apple, Adobe, or CaptureOne releases an update, they're already behind the curve again because Canon, Nikon, Sony, etc have all released new products.

What's sad is having to pay to gain support for cameras that have been out for months.
I probably would have updated, but this tactical delay by marketing to gain some extras sales has has a different effect. I am not going to look into lightroom! How is that Steve?
I'm assuming you paid for Aperture 1.5 then? Just give Steve the one finger salute and say hello to Juarez.

Aperture 2.0 looks like it will be a great update, although it wasn't easy to find the trial version (the link from Aperture 2 on the UK site started downloading the 1.5 trial!), and it isn't even possible to buy it yet outside the US and Canada.
It all seems a bit disjointed and not what I've come to expect from Apple. Not only does a link labeled as version 2.0 download 1.5, buying it is all over the place too: When you finally manage to download the trial and start it up you get a dialog box with one of the options being "buy now". If you click on that, it takes you to the US Aperture 2 purchase page. However, when you change country to other than USA or Canada, the purchase page changes to 1.5.6! Come on, Apple - I want to give you some more money; please let me buy this upgrade in the UK :)

Right now she has a Canon Rebel. I'll probably be getting her a Canon 40D sometime soon and either keep the Rebel for myself or eBay it.
If that's the case, I would say that Aperture is worth looking at. I would just have watch the Aperture and iPhoto tutorials and see if there's anything in Aperture she felt she might use. I find Aperture to be a bit of a luxury for myself (I have a Rebel XT, and I don't take this all that seriously), but it is a much more pleasant experience overall, I would say.

Umm...I ran Aperture 1.5 on my Macbook, which doesn't have a graphics card.
Just checked, and Aperture 2 doesn't require one either.
Perhaps you're thinking of Motion, which does indeed require a dedicated graphics card.
No, you don't NEED one, but Aperture never ran great on a MacBook. They lowered the minimum specs and eventually made it run on a MacBook, but it was never really designed to do so.
But hey, the loupe was slow even for some users with a Quad Core, so....

I am trying Aperture 2 in my MacBook (2GHz, 2 GB RAM, Core Duo) and it is MUCH MORE faster than Aperture 1.5. Though I am yet to import my hole library. I have only imported about a hundred photos.
Also, the retouch tool is great. At least for me, a hobby photographer, this means no more Photoshop in 99% of my photos.
Now I'll just wait a couple of weeks and see the possible minor bugs to get fixed.:)

It seems to work in Mexico's store. $239 USD (Not that bad:))

Earlier this a.m. ordered upgrade to version 2.0. Tried the upgrade via the website route and stopped as there was no download option. Downloaded the trial version and after starting the trial, an option appears allowing you to buy the software. You select that option and it takes you to Apple site.
After clicking on upgrade you are presented with upgrade checkbox with software Key only. When you select that you buy the upgrade key (no download necessary) and receive a purchase Order Confirmation. You should receive, with the confirmation email (according to Apple's own site) an upgrade key to enter into the trial. There was no key. After contacting support they said I should wait up to 24 hours for key to be generated and emailed to me. The Order Status page at Apple tells me that the order has been 'shipped' via electronic delivery.
Anybody else experience this?

I wish I could get a Mac Pro but I've got a rev. A MBP @ 2.16 and aperture 1.5.x is sloooow
while Leopard is faster in some respects, I don't expect Aperture 2.0 to ease my woes with laggy Aperture and long export times. I kindof need a new computer but I just can't justify it after only a year and a half
The changes also seem nice but I'm not sure that it's worth the hundred bucks. I guess I'll trial it but a tower with 4+gb of ram and internal storage or FW 800 is probably where I should start putting my money
