Nah I quite enjoy when someone recommends that I read a book. It just so happens that I'm quite fond of reading. ;) Don't you hate when young people aren't affected by what old guys say? ;)

No, but I'm shocked that (a) there might be hope for the world after all, and (b) anybody listens to me anymore. :p

Thanks you two. :) Yeah it's nothing terrible but sometimes I wish it wasn't there or that I'd picked something which was more personal or something. The whole kanji thing is so overdone now. Ah well, it's like any other scar, just a mark of an event in our lives.

Only have 2 at the moment. On my right bicep is the arch angel michael and on my right ankle is a skull and crossbones(the gf has a matching one thats pink instead with a bow). The ankle picture is an old one from when i got it, but figured it would be better to show what it looks like since im a hairy bastard and its much fuzzier now.

It is an arm band based on the insignia for the Spacing Guild mental and physical training school from Dune. This particular school emphasized pure mathematics.
Considering that I had it done 11 years ago, I'm amazed that it is still as dark as it is (it is darker than the original pencil artwork that I drew up to have it done). Of course I don't spend a ton of time in the sun anymore.

Quick question...
What's an appropriate tip for a tattoo artist? I've not had one before and am scheduled on the 7th of June for a piece, but I'm unsure how much to tip her when its done. Standard ~10-15%?

I think that's about right. I wouldn't do less than 10% unless you were unhappy with it. Maybe even 20% if you think it's especially good but any more than that seems excessive.

i always tip at least $20. last time i tipped $100, only because he gave me a super good deal and i had the extra cash.

i've never tipped for a tattoo, never even thought about it
i don't think these guys pay much attention to etiquette!
and they set their own prices
however, the artist of my most recent one, that was very well done, will be tipped with repeat business

about tip: it all depends on the size, scale and price of the tattoo. i would've tipped more on my last one, but i'm short enough on funds, and the artist knew that, but he did give me a deal, which i appreciate to say the least.
first attachment:my first tattoo from seven years ago, i drew it and just got it done. wasn't bad
second attachment:actually my third tattoo, its my birthday
last three attachemts:my newest tattoo along with my second and fourth tattoo. the ying yang on my wrist that you can see barely was my second. the tibetian writing (Om Mani Padme Hum) was my fourth, but touched up when the branch, lotus, and cherry blossoms were added sunday.

the only problem with tattoos, they certainly don't get better with age
this was my first tattoo on my back 14 years ago
needs a lot of work, but has already been colored in, and it hurts SO much worse the second time!
http://eastwardweb.net/pvtp/tattoo1.jpg
this is the one i had done second
it's an ankle cuff, and is about 3 years old
http://eastwardweb.net/pvtp/tattoo2.jpg
third one on my right ankle
i wanted something to accentuate the lines of my calf
but the tattooist misunderstood what i wanted with the color
so it's nothing like what i asked for
if you look closely you'll see that this guy was a beginner
i want to fix this one as well
http://eastwardweb.net/pvtp/tattoo3.jpg
the fourth is only about 1 year old
it is on my front right shoulder
it's my favorite
the artist drew it on the spot for me from a picture i brought in
he recommended black and grey
i was undecided at the time, but i don't think i'll ever add color to this one

I was the same way, I thought, why? its just going to look all nasty when you get older, it'll be saggy and wrinkally. But its a personal thing, I created my design and I think that made it a whole lot better for me. Plus thats why I got it on my foot, I figure, I can cover it up if I need to

my sister has one on her ankle and one on her foot. the pain wasnt a problem, but her foot and ankle both swelled up afterwords for each. and i would imagine that it would be a bit uncomfortable at least due to the bone, which usually is the worst part.

Heres mine, its straight across the top of my foot. The turtle is my clan (I'm Haudenosaunee, Mohawk to be specific) we're a matrilineal society so I got my clan from my mom, and her mom and so on and so forth. The squares are to represent the original 5 nations of the haudenosaunee confederacy, but I've replaced the tree in the center with my clan. And the swirl in the middle of the turtle means life and it goes counter clock wise which represents life in the Longhouse.
The squares are purple because originally we used to make the beads that make up the wampum out of quahog shells and they are white and purple, so purple was known to be kinda more rare I suppose but thats how we made designs.
So thats my first and only tattoo, so far. My next one I want to get a boat and a net because my Grandfather was a fisherman. But it'll take me forever to get the pic right. :)

this is my newest one, it was done by DJ Minor in Houston, Texas.
DJ uses a new(er) type of tattoo machines called the Neuma.
http://neumamachines.com
The Neuma is a Pneumatic (air powered) tattoo machine and sounds much like a dentists drill rather than a tattoo machine.
With my experience with it (6 hour session), it was less painful, and it ran a lot smoother than a normal machine, because it is run by gears instead of magnets like a normal machine, for that reason it causes a lot less irritation, swelling and redness than a normal machine.
here is my picture directly after my 6 hour session, as you can see no irritation or redness.
Also the two days the tattoo has been completely unsore, i cant even tell its there.

Is it safe to infer that few Mac users have tattoos?
Why? Do we lack character?
I've got a few. But, no you can't see. Custom work. Not going to share on the Internet so that everyone can copy them.
I was quite surprised the other day when browsing through a Tattoo magazine (waiting to get my latest one touched-up / tweaked a bit), that I saw several Tattoos in one magazine that were already on people in another magazine.
I find it interesting to see what other people have done, and get inspiration and such for ideas. But, to actually use the same tattoos? I don't think so.
Why would I want the same thing that is on thousands of other people?
So, when my wife and I go in, we present them with ideas (verbally), and let them draw up a custom interpretation of that idea. Basically, we describe what we are looking for, and let them create fresh artwork for it. Then, once we see their draft sketch, we'll discuss little tweaks or alterations if we want additional details or some details altered.
Usually, our local artist gets it exactly like we want (actually better) on his first attempt. Often, we'll go in there and be surprised by how his drawing captures our idea even better than the mental picture we had.
None of mine have come out of a catalog, or website, or "Flash" thing. They were all created by the local artist and drawn up by his interpretation of our description. You get some surprising and interesting work by just letting them loose to work creatively and come up with their own ideas to create what you are after.
I would hate to have something that was on millions of other people. I like being unique, and having something unique.
I was actually quite surprised that the magazines would feature people who just had tattoos from "flash" catalogs. Especially exact artwork that matched many other people and the original drawing exactly.
While everyone is obviously free to express themselves as they choose. I would think that you'd likely appreciate the artwork longer (and have fewer regrets) if you knew it was custom made for you.
That said, I've seen a lot of great tattoos here in this thread. Great ideas everyone.
Lots of creativity here.
Oh, the one with the home job stuff, I checked out that link. Man, that's just too freaky for me. Maybe I'd let my wife do that, but definitely not my friends and definitely not while we were all drunk. Might wake up with a smurf or something the next morning.
Great, now I've done it. Everyone's going to be giving their drunk buddies smurfs while they're passed out. Well, now we'll know who drinks too much :)
Anyway, great pictures. Great Tattoos. I'd share. But, I'm afraid I'd see them in next month's Tattoo Magazine on someone else then (not you guys, but probably some other web searcher). So, I'll keep mine to myself. Sorry...

I would never be able to make my mind up on a design for a tattoo.
I will have to wait till they can implant flexible LCD screens under your skin and I would change it every day.
I have seen very few 'good' tattoos, it gets very tiresome seeing loads of kids with Tribal, Chinese Character or 'Tramp Stamps'.
Seriously, the only people that can pull off a tattoo and look convincingly awesome are primarily Japanese Yakuza.
Thinking of having a tattoo, take this simple test;
1) Are you Yakuza?
If No: You are only worthy of a stick on tattoo from a bubblegum packet.
If Yes: Get a cracking great dragon all over your back, don't forget some shades and a white Italian suit for when it gets too Chilly.

April 13, 2008 - i just got another tattoo last night, under the pirate ship covering my achilles tendon and stuff, i should have a picture of it up later tonight.
I couldn't have copied you. I got mine done September 17, 2007. :D
There are some similarities, but it is solely the tatooists artwork, with my input and a few suggestions, including two T-shirts that I brought in. The cover up piece was very limited for me. I could pretty much only get wildlife (um, that is what I am trying to cover up), dragons, no, snakes, no, or a skull. Well, skull it is. I had wanted that all along, but my wife talked me out of it. Well, he talked me right back into it, and I am glad that I listened to him.
ETA: This is one of the shirts that I have, just in white, not black.

They are pretty similar, the coloring, and the eyes. I was going for more of a static look, with interference on the skulls face, but it didn't quite turn out how I wanted, or how he wanted, so he stopped messing with it. He originally did a more green color for the eyes, then decided that it looked like crap, and went with a toned down red, almost like blood.

Well this one has been given a great deal of thought and about a year to decide just where I wanted it to be without loosing any detail in the years to come. This was about 16 hours sitting time (I have to update as more color has been added, not much though) since I can't sit in one spot very long and I'm going to add a bit more in the next few months. The ink is injected under the skin, so anything that increases circulation will cause the tat to "fade" or "smear." It's very important to stay out of the sun while it is healing. After that, sunbathing, drinking alcohol, even frequent massages can all cause the tat to age more quickly because all of these activities increase blood flow to the skin surface. This should also give you an idea of what areas of your body would be more likely to fade faster. :)

While this be on the inner or outer wrist? The wrist is a good place however it is worth considering the times you might need to cover it up.

My 4th one.
Had it done on November 4th by Capt. Bret in Newport RI. Picture was taken about an hour after he'd finished it.
Quite a funny google based story to go with it.
When I decided I wanted a Haida Orca, I googled it and the first place that came out was Bret's tattoo shop in Newport, RI. Nothing special there apart from that very day we'd booked our flights to America to visit our friends in Newport RI.

Aye it'd be on the inside of my wrist, oh god i bet that felt weird haha.
I got "Mother" on my left wrist and "Father" on my right wrist. They were the first and only tattoos I got. Hurt a bit, took a lil break after I got Mother done.
My advice would be to make sure you have something to eat or drink before you get your tattoo. I got mine done at 11am, woke up at 9:30am, had a shower etc etc went straight to the tattoo parlour without having breakfast. Once I got Mother done the tattoo artist said that i was looking a bit light headed, he asked me if I had eaten anything or had anything to drink, i said no so he gave me a can of coke. Once he started the Father tat I couldn't really feel anything and it hurt a lot less then the Mother one.
So yh to sum up it doesn't really hurt that much that you want to start screaming and crying, its the kinda pain that you just gotta accept...no one wants to leave a tattoo parlour with half a tattoo done ;)

I don't have a tat, and i'm not sure if I want one. If I get one it'd be personal. I was thinking of having someone design a phoenix, and having "rise from the ashes" written in latin under it.
I think it'd be personal and really meaningful. A reminded that whenever we fall we can rise again and be a new/better person for the experience.
One problem with me getting a tattoo is that I'm a nursing student. Until it's healed it isn't considered sanitary, and if it's visible I'd have a really hard time getting a job after I graduate.
My boyfriend has 5 tats. Gemini symbol (looks kinda roman in design - hard to explain) the Welsh dragon on his upper arm, a dragon on his other upper arm, a tribal dragon on his lower leg, and a Maple leaf on his shoulder blade (red, outlined in black (the black part looks kinda like cracked rock). Looks good.

Okay you guys, so you know how they say that tattoos are addictive?
Its sorta true!
Maybe its not that they're "addictive", so much as it is that you come to realize that you don't LIKE they way that they look, but you LOVE the way that they turn out and you also realize that it doesn't hurt like some say they do and thus the inhibition to get them is lost after that realization?
Insight! Message!!! LOL
Anyhow, I have 3 (and they all mean something and are very personal and my big tattoo is an original; I would never "pick from the wall")
Me and 6 friends all got this same paw print (but in diff locs and colors) because we all became friends thru and religiously volunteer our time to the same Animal Shelter.
It looks pretty dry but despite how it looks there, it healed totally solid and great.
(it was still "icky" in that pic)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v725/BXRchic/Tattoos/WOASHPaw.jpg
Stars are a personal thing between my mother and myself. Its sort of like a bond-thingie... i dunno... its tough to put into words, but stars hold importance for us ;)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v725/BXRchic/Tattoos/MyStar.jpg
This is my big tattoo (tho the pic is teensy); it was taken with a phone right after I got it. I now realize that I need to get on taking a new pic of it! LOL
It means "The dynamics of Love". The arrows are symbolic of many things and are an important piece to the design.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v725/BXRchic/Tattoos/MyTat9607.jpg
My Fiance, Brian is working on a full sleeve on one arm and he's got a Star with a "C" in the middle (for me! :D) and a Sun on the same arm (but I've gotta grab some pics of those guys).
Here's his partial sleeve; its a work in progress, as you can see.
He's very into the bio-mechanical theme and if you're having a hard time grasping what's goin on there, locate the skulls and the rest of it is design work.

I really regret getting it but it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Hey! A brother from another mother! :) Sorry, I couldn't resist. I've always wanted to get works in Mohawk but I was afraid that I would spell it wrong, because if you spell it a different way in Mohawk it could mean something totally different.
On the other hand, a lot of other first nations fought with the Mohawks, its kinda bad. Even in our creation we were known as the most hostile. I suppose I can blame my road rage on that :p

No, it didn't hurt too much maybe because of where it is.
It took just 2 hours and after 10 or 15 minutes, I found the area kind of just goes numb.
I want to get another, but just can decide on what, it's frustrating, lol!

This is really cool. I can see you in a promo picture reclining shirtless, modelling expensive selvege denim (as long as your head isn't too rough).
I'm considering getting my sleeve done. Maybe 3/4 sleeve (wrist up to half way up my upper arm).
I'm thinking of getting all my favorite song lyrics (I've started collecting already. FYI: only one or two lines, not the entire songs) and making a pattern out of them. Possibly making each lyric a different colour so they can be read without searching too hard.
I've got a few already. No pics, though.
