Expose with f9?

So I have 10.3 now and am trying to use Expose, but I don't get it. The directions say to use the function keys such as f9 and f10 to get expose to work, but on my keyboard when I press those keys it makes the backlit keyboard get brighter or dimmer. I don't get it. What dumb mistake am I making?

Go to your System Preferences and select different hot keys (like command-f9). That should fix it.

Have you tried pressing function key with f9?

Ah OK, I see now. I just assumed that since apple says to use f9 and f10 that they would work without having to hit the fn key. Very cool. So I understand what "all windows" does and what "desktop" does, but what is it that "application windows" does?

Application windows are the windows in the active application (the application name next to the blue apple in the menu bar at the time you click F10).
