MacNN republishes (http://www.macnn.com/articles/08/05/28/griffin.exposes.3g.iphone/) photos from iDealsChina which claim to be case moldings from Griffin Technology (http://www.griffintechnology.com/) for the upcoming 3G-capable iPhone. Alongside the case images is a rendering (http://images.macrumors.com/article/2008/05/28/111934-griffinmold-lg3.jpg) of the 3G iPhone shape.

The moldings reveal the same tapered shape that has been circulating in rumors and photos over the past few weeks. Another case manufacturer (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/05/19/3g-iphone-case-revealed/) had previously posted photos of the 3G iPhone case with a very similar design - with a curved back and a larger opening for the earpiece. The larger opening is presumably there to allow for (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/04/30/iphone-accessory-makers-detail-3g-iphone-design/) the additional sensor that has been rumored.

Seriously, other than two really badly made blurry fake snaps, every single rumour, leak, spy-shot, description etc. has pointed to the same device now for quite a while.

This is what rumour mongering is all about, trying to figure out which is true and which is not. These mold pictures are pretty much a solid confirmation of a new iphone, what shape it is, when it's coming out and even some of the internal details. If this doesn't make the front page, what should?

Most cases now have a small line for the speaker, and a separate hole for ambient light. This one has a large line across the top. Therefore, I conclude, that the 3G iPhone will have a front camera.

On a different note, with all of the anticipated hardware features a slightly modified form factor is inevitable (as everyone knows). I'm sure, however, that what is inside the thing will far surpass any quibble anyone could have with the exterior.

Well, if so, then the back of the Gen 2 iPhone will be ergonomically correct. The hand has a natural curve when utilizing object of that size. Better fit an feel, less chance of users going into narcissist behavior after dropping phone.

But back to topic - I hope that the 'extra large' opening at the top of the case it for the front-facing camera - because that would mean that you would be able to video conferencing via iChat if you're on wireless or video calling if you're on 3G... Or if you're vain... a VERY expensive mirror.

QUIT COMPLAINING!!! We have seen numerous fuzzy photos that everyone has been analyzing. This is a clear photo, not of the iPhone but of the case mold which adds credibility, and it's from Griffin. These photos are the most Proof that we've had so far, and in my opinion Confirms that the pictures we've been seeing are accurate.

Looks like the element of surprise is quickly being replaced by the sneaky 'check the back of the coat closet' antics frequently deployed during the winter or birthday months. Yes, this is a mac rumors website.. but I would call this a surprise buster. Of course it's going to have a camera in the front for video conference, look, it's right there in the injection mold! This news may have already been reassured with proof.. but it sure is taking the fun out of that initial keynote speech.

Maybe I need to subscribe to the 'wild and completely implausible mac rumors' forum.. there we could discuss :apple: branded+designed cars, food, and toothbrushes. Only to be damn impressed by our speculation when the items were announced.

It is very common for Apple to release the specs of a new product so companies like griffin can get new products in the pipe. I am looking at this and noticed the absence of a hole punch for the home button. also the sides do not allow for any of the other switches. So i am a little nervous to call this a final mold ready for production. Also wanted to bring up the idea that the larger ear space might allow for a speaker phone. I am also guessing that apple may of excluded the bottom speaker to allow for more size of 3g and a second frontal camera.

Regardless of what we may think though apple will have to make some design changes in regards to size. I dont care what color it is to be honest I just hope it does all the super cool stuff that is rumored out here.

It is common knowledge amongst smart people that Apple is trying to head off the impact of the release of the Radio Shack Transister telephone. I heard this phone will bring back the expanding metal antennae we have all so missed and will use teflon coated dials on the side to help tune into fm radio while you are voice conferencing from your white single ear bud. This phone will be the iphone killer. Apple is scared. I did also see a picture of the battery belt in leopard stripe Griffin is designing for its launch.

I have a feeling it's like the iSkin for iPod's where the wheel itself has a rubber coating over it to protect it. I think this mold will protect the Home button and probably have some sort of circular outline for the button itself on the material the mold is made out of, instead if a cutout.

I agree. There's no reason a light sensor should be that big. If you think about it logically, the light sensor should be placed closest to the earpiece and in the center for lefties or righties.

For the opening to be that wide, it has to accomodate something with a formidable height. Based on the size of the hole of the rear camera, it can likely be a front camera.

One thing that others might have forgotten to mention (but complained about in the current generation iPhone) is a possibility of an LED indicator for missed calls, awaiting messages, etc.

So, the camera can be on one side, and the light indicators are on the other side, and the case will be symmetrical for asthetic purposes.


WAIT. Now that I'm thinking about it....

What if the top area is for full-blown stereo speakers? People were complaining about the lack of volume on the original iPhones, and the single speaker on the bottom? What if Apple changed it around and placed the speaker on the front and the microphone at the bottom alone? That could answer some of the other "leaked" images that lacked a bottom opening...

I'd rather have the two cameras.

Current iPhone cases generally have extra space around the ear-slot too, right? There's an ambient light sensor and a proximity sensor IIRC.

It's just that the new arrangement has sensors arranged all in one line. That doesn't necessarily mean MORE sensors--much as that would be cool. That slot in the case doesn't indicate anything about a camera to me.

Means back to the drawing board for Griffin. Thats why apple send the specs early! DUH.

Just found this out from a buddy of mine that works for the immigration office. Apparently Radio Shack has taken delivery of a mysterious container presumably filled with 10 millions sherpas that will carry the vacuum tubes.

The manifest was disguised as 9volt batteries but further research has revealed that although we might think Radio Shack is planning a fathers day Battery sale it is highly unlikely. Also we have calculated the average weight of a single use 9 volt battery and have found that the total weight of the container far excedes the 4oz weight of a Radio Shack Battery. Taking into consideration that an average sherpas weighs 50lb, we have reason to believe that the container does infact contain sherpas. Radio Shack is planning to be ready for a launch before June 9th.

My insider has just told me Radio Shack plans to make a formal announcement in Cuba sometime in the next couple weeks to celebrate "cell phones for everyone day" in Cuba. I have attached a photo to prove they are already standing in line for this very exciting day.

I'm amazed at how well Apple is able to control information leaks. Most other companies would have already had knock-offs for sale on street corners by now.Well they aren't doing so well actually.

In the past, you would know basically nothing about an Apple product until the Steve pulled it out of his pocket. With the 3G iPhone we already know all the major hardware features, half of the new software features, we know what the dimensions are, what the case will look like, what colours it will come in and even details like what kind of phono jack it has. This is unprecedented "leakage" in fact.

Kind of sad, as excited as I am about it, it would have been better to be surprised. :(

agreed. i want to take my new iphone geocaching and i'd like to take pictures of my geocaches to text to my friends that i'm [video] ichatting with about a document that i currently have saved in disc mode that i can pull up to edit and save with all my free time (that i've calculated on the scientific calculator) i now have from being able to sync with my microsoft exchange account from work and delete/mark-read new messages all at once.

Current iPhone cases generally have extra space around the ear-slot too, right? There's an ambient light sensor and a proximity sensor IIRC.

It's just that the new arrangement has sensors arranged all in one line. That doesn't necessarily mean MORE sensors--much as that would be cool. That slot in the case doesn't indicate anything about a camera to me.

If the new iPhone does NOT have video chat/conferencing it will be only the second 3G phone EVER to NOT have video chatting/conferencing, the first being the new BlackBerry Bold lol (POS). So if it does not, Apple would be IMMENSELY dropping the ball!

Ask anyone on this site that lives outside the US if they have ever seen a 3G phone without video chatting/conferencing in the last 3 years even, they will tell you NO.

Well, I found the unedited pictures, opened them in PS, resized and unsharp masked them. I turned on the grid to measure the relative size of the rear camera (bezel size and lens glass size) and the opening in the front of the skin. It appears to me after looking at the relative sizes next to each other in the grid, if they used the same camera as they did in the back of the phone, it would not fit.

Could be no camera; could me a smaller (VGA?) camera for conferencing only (with the higher megapixel camera in the rear); could be the perspective of the photos distorting the true size; or I could be completely wrong.

The same can be said about the iPhone being the ONLY camera phone that doesn't support MMS. We have no clue what Apple will do... If Steve doesn't find it worthwhile, we will never get it...

I have seen two versions of the new 3G iPhone. It looks like it will be available in white and black, but I am pretty sure they are just nice covers. We'll see...

I've seen all the pictures and see all the hoopla, but white?!!? Seriously... It looks nice and streamline in ur house, on your desk, where ever ever we put our young iMac's... I don't know about most PDA users out there, but I for one beat the hell out of my blackjack ii. Partially because it has windows mobile and it is garbage - so it deserves a beating. On the other hand, I so heavily use my phone, carry it while I work, that the out side and back of the case gets scratched. If I had a white phone it would look destroyed in a matter of a week. I really hope the white is just there for the "pristine" effect while the black remains a choice.

Though, truth be told, if white was the only color. I would HAVE to buy it I suppose. This blackjack ii is trash. ;)

I called the ATT here in charleston and the person said they have plenty and they keep them in stock. Makes me wonder if ATT will offer a contract incentive on the 1stG iphones after the new release.

Which makes no sense. I doubt AT&T will subsidize the iPhone. The iPhone is a huge draw to get people into Apple stores. If it's cheaper at AT&T then why even bother selling it at the Apple store?

AT&T will not subsidize the iPhone. I'd be pissed if they did as I used my last subsidy to buy a phone to tide me over until the 3G iPhone. A lot of original iPhone customers would be pissed as well.

Has anyone noticed that the hole for the main camera appears to be exactly the same size as the 1st Gen iPhone main camera? In my experience, every phone I've seen with a camera >3.2MP has had a substantially bigger camera footprint on the back of the phone.

I'd been hoping for a better camera than 3.2 but I guess it will do... :o they better improve it though :cool:

Nope, but the chip that handles the camera is limited to 2Mp - which is what the iPhone delivers. If the rumors as to the new chips being used are correct, then 2Mp is still the camera rez upper limit.

So I'm not expecting a change to the camera on this update.

My daughter has a 5MP cell phone camera, and the pictures pale compared to a regular 3.2MP digital camera, let alone a higher resolution one.
