View Full Version : What's the oldest version of Mac OS X you've still seen in use?

Our university iMac computers (the G4 "lamp shade") are still running Jaguar. Wow... Coming over to the Mac during the Tiger days, it's almost comical using Jaguar, with no Spotlight, Expose, anything. And they had the old Pro Mouse, so I actually had to do control-clicking, too.
Has anyone found a Mac out there that still runs any Mac OS X version that was released before Jaguar?

My folks still use Panther (10.3).
Drexel still uses one button mice on their Power Mac's and Mac Pro's.

Are you using a mighty mouse? You know that you can right click by lifting the left finger off the mouse?

I want to say yes, but I know the answer is going to be no. Someone here will still be using text based entry on an Apple I. I've got 2 one button mice in my drawer, but since I've got macbook, macbook pro, macbook air, I havent used them. Two finger tap trackpad is the best.

Relatively new to the Mac ownership game, so for me I see Leopard on a regular basis (upgraded old Tiger machine). I have a LCIII that I could set up with 7.6 on it, but the earliest OS X I have seen recently has been Jaguar.
Looking to buy a few older Macs still though, hope to have dual boot OS 9 and OS X soon.

why not emulate?? i find it pretty darn decent for the old games, just a BIT slower depending on what your playing.
if your willing to pay then having a good classic gaming machine is a good idea though, my g3 imac and 5000 is perfect for that

Not a gamer, more a tinkerer, hence why I took my friends LCIII off his hands. Want to play around more with networking and learning more about the old systems.
Let an old PowerBook G3 slip on ebay yesterday. I knew it ended at 1600 BST, but forgot and was ever so slightly outbid. Went for £31 plus £15 shipping, I'd have happily paid that especially since I think it was upgraded heavily on HDD and RAM.

I know a college professor who still uses System 6 on one of those old beige boxes. And when he wants to send an email, he writes it using "WriteNow", prints it out, gives it to his secretary, who retypes it on a modern computer and then emails it. He says it works for him.

Panther on the emacs at school. It sucks :(
Its pretty messed up, theres Panther on the emacs, then theres an iMac with Tiger, and there all running different versions of iLife. In fact the iMac is running iMovie 08 and iMovie 06, so its all screwed.
Panther was great in the day sure, but it totally sucks now.

I use an Apple Wireless Mouse (one button) on my iMac also. Will I get a new mouse with my next Mac? Most likely, yes. Do I use taps and slides on my Eee's trackpad, and did I on my iBook's trackpad? Yes. Do I use gestures on my iPhone? Yes. But does any of that mean I am overly dissatisfied with the one button mouse on my iMac? No, not particularly. Meh. It works just fine. And Tiger on that iMac works just fine also. I miss Spotlight and Expose when they're not available (i.e. on this Win2003 computer right here). I don't really miss a right mouse button when it's not available. My next Mac will have Leopard or Snow Leopard on it, but I don't see any tremendous reason to upgrade the iMac just so I can be 1337....
As for the original question, I have seen Jaguar running; I don't think I've seen 10.0-10.1. I haven't seen Jag running often, and the last time I saw it, think it was on a computer running an EEG system, and to be honest, when you have scientific data recording equipment working properly, why on earth would you mess with it? I wouldn't be happy using Jaguar at home, though.

Gosh, if I found a Mac in a reasonably high profile place like a college library that was still using 10.2 jaguar or earlier, then if I had time I might try to do something about it. I bet that it wouldn't be super secured if it's been so totally neglected, so you might even be able to go in there with an OS X install disk and update it yourself!

When I took my job the PMG5 I use had 10.3.5 installed on it (dual 1.8GHz, I don't know if it shipped with a late 10.2 or early 10.3 installed). As much better Panther was than 10.0 through 10.2, Tiger and Leopard are still shockingly better than it. I have 10.4.11 on it now but still find myself reaching for the space bar to Quick Look a file. ;)
Even my old B&W G3 has 10.3.9 on it...

My parents have an iLamp on 10.3, and I've recently worked on some acquaintances' iBooks running 10.3 as well. Oldest I've seen recently is a friend's backup computer, a very beat-up TiBook, running 10.2. I also know an artist still running 8.1 on a 7500, but I haven't worked on it in a while so it's possible she upgraded.
This has nothing to do with a Mac, but I did seriously install NT4.0 on a battered laptop not two weeks ago. It was the only license we had that could be given away at work, and it was better than the mostly-broken copy of 98 on the thing. It didn't even run that badly, which I wouldn't have been able to say for 2000 or XP.

Technically, the Mac OS X Server 1.2 running on the iMac is older.
But one can argue that Server 1.2 isn't really a Mac OS X 10.x... no Carbon yet... etc.

Did I say it was? OS 9 is nine years old. I think it is more shocking that they are still using that, than updating to OS X.
Now, not to sound harsh, but do you have anything worth-while to post that is related at all to the question, aside from being a smart ass?

One of our work Power Macs is running Jaguar and is still in daily use – it's just used as the machine for our scanner these days, it works perfectly well with it and the drivers so we see no need to go updating the OS. If it isn't broke and all of that.

Original public release of Mac OS X on a Power Mac G3 Beige at work. It was the first G3 Mac i think and the last beige mac they ever made with the same design apple had used for years with the curved disk drive and Zip Drive internally installed. Last computer with ADB too wasn't it? Though i think the first Blue&White G3s still had ADB.
We still use it because it came with a great interface on a card which connects to our digital audio desks at work and integrates perfectly with Cubase. I tried actually putting the latest OS X on it (luckily i backed up the original), which i think was Jaguar at the time, it wouldn't take it and even after i hacked the install to actually let it be installed, all the shiny hardware in the computer now wouldn't work so i just reverted back to the original backup. Though it now happily runs with a USB2 and Firewire card in it.
It's amazing looking back just how much like Mac OS 9 the original Mac OS X release looked. It's also shockingly slow and unreliable! Even more so than Mac OS 9 was! The dock was massive, the actual UI was pretty featureless and bland compared to today. Everything was very clunky. It's amazing how much it has aged in just a few years. Windows 95 actually looks younger than the original Mac OS X in my view.

Yeah, before I was able to burn the disks necessary for installing 10.4 (iBook had only a CD drive), I ran 10.3.9 on my G3 for a few days last fall. The guy I bought the laptop from had been running it for a while, and seemed fine with it.
A few years ago, I worked at a store where we used G3 iMacs. I think they ran OS 9 or something. They were old, but ran the accounting software and gave internet access, which suggests you can use computers for years and years if your requirements are low.

I'm still doing heavyweight (relatively speaking) design work on a G4 MD 1.25 (2Gb RAM) using Quark 4.1, Photoshop 5 and Illustrator 9 among others. Well, the thing is that my wife currently uses the iBook and needs it mostly for music through iTunes, word processing and internet access. 10.3 however has a lot of issues, issues that were fixed with Tiger, so I guess that I will also burn the disks for 10.4 in the near future. :D

Did they enjoy waiting 15 dock bounces before the big blue E started up?
Did they enjoy having an OS that couldn't even burn a CD?
That's hillarious.
