I have seen a cool, new car mount for the iPhone 3G somewhere, but I can't recall where at the moment. It was like a belt clip holder, but instead of a belt clip on the back, there is a piece that fits into your air conditioning vent. It is also adjustable from upright to landscape orientation. It looked pretty decent from what I saw briefly.
I'll post if I find it again.

I am also looking, but more so for a good cradle, I don't really care if it has a charger built in, as I have a griffin charging chord.
Looking for something like this
http://www.dsldevelopments.com/brodit/holder/Apple+iPhone-Brodit-Holder.asp
or this
http://store.everythingicafe.com/igrip-custom-fit-iphone-holder-without-mount/3A96A2890.htm
But I will make my own custom bracket to mount it too...
I absolutely hate the clamp/squeeze type mounts, they are hideous.
And I also hate those stupid gooseneck abortions that stick out of cigarette lighter hole...

Any iPhone/iPod with the standard dock connector will work with any car charger with the standard dock connector.
You could get a generic iPod car charger off ebay for CHEAP and it'll work with your iPhone.

Just tested and my iPhone no longer works with my Sony head unit. It was being used for music only (not for the phone features) but it seems something Apple has done has seriously messed up the functionality which I used to have before.
I am not happy because I bought the Sony unit specifically for this purpose.

I just bought the belkin iphone charger/FM transmitter yesterday. When I first plugged it in, I thought it didn't work because I got the screen stating that the product was not made for iPhone. When I looked at the batery icon it was charging. I charged it in the car yesterday without any problems. I have bluetooth in the car as well. It connects to the car perfectly. When I get a call the iPhone pauses the music and then restarts again after the call is finished. So running 3G, BT, the ipod and talking at the same time is not an issue anymore.

Nope. Your mileage may vary. A lot of AC adaptors still charge via the firewire spec. Apple disabled that with the 3G model. I have a cheap iPod / iPhone charger that I plug into my wall. Charges my old iPhone - does not charge my new iPhone 3G. I also have a Belkin car charger - charges the old, not the new.
So it's best to make sure that your adaptor supports the 3G before you buy it!

I just ordered this one today hoping it would work on my 3G. Are you able to transmit to an FM station okay? Do you get much static?

+1 on the Griffin PowerJolt. A pretty decent car charger - I'm using it for my 3G and would recommend it.
As for mounting options, I picked the following unit up at BB and it works well to hold the iPhone in place. Depending on whether you have a cup holder handy, it is a decent non-permanent solution:

I just got the Belkin Tunebase FM (part #F8Z183). It was $100 but it was worth it. It says it works with iPhone. It also happens to work with iPhone 3G perfectly. It charges it and transmits the music to my stereo. FM transmission is tough since I live in the city. I'll get a very clear signal for a while and then there will be static. This unit also has a line out where you can attach a cassette tape adapter. I may do that. But this is a very nice unit. It holds your iPhone in place really well. If you are shopping around for an FM Transmitter and are interested in this one, make sure you are looking at part #F8Z183. There are earlier versions that look identical with different part numbers. I do not know if these older versions work with iPhone 3G or not. I should also note that when I hooked up my iPhone 3G to it, I didn't even get the warning notice that other people are getting on other chargers/docks.

EDIT: So it looks like they've discontinued the iSqueez. That sucks. I thought it was a great idea lol.

I just purchased this from Amazon. (Kensington Car Charger Deluxe)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0011ULQ1K
Apple store costs $49.99
But amazon has it for $36.89.
It works pretty well with a flexible goose-neck. It also comes with a auxiliary cable to plug into the car.

I saw this at Fry's Electronics and thought that this was perfect, but it doesn't fit the 3G. There's a version for the iPod Touch and the original iPhone, so they're specifically designed for a single device.
Has anyone used these before? When I was looking at them, the corners seem kind of rough and looked like they could constantly keep scraping your phone.

After having my Alpine head unit rendered useless in the iPod realm with 2.0, I was on the lookout for something that would let me control my ipod easily, charge the iPod, and require little wiring. I ended up purchasing the Kensington LiquidAUX Deluxe from Amazon.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0011UK2HO
I got it today and after brief use, I am absolutely THRILLED with it. The holder plugs directly into your cig lighter, and has a definite wiggle to it. Luckily, the wiggle doesn't seem to show up while driving on normal roads. Plugging in was a breeze. Your iPod/iPhone passes audio through the dock connector, so all you need to do is connect the Kensington's audio plug to your AUX plug in the car stereo.
When you dock your iPhone/iPod, you don't see any messages that say it wasn't designed for an iPhone, it just starts working. Did I mention it also includes a wireless remote that hooks onto your steering wheel?
Overall, I can't find much wrong with this thing, except I would have liked it to be a little stiffer, because over rocky roads I can possibly see this thing moving around.
If you are looking for an all-in-one solution to charging and playing your iPhone, I seriously suggest you look into the Kensington LiquidAUX Deluxe. I was at the Apple Store today and saw a spot on their wall for it, but it was out of stock.

I would be very careful with using any car chargers and FM transmitters pre-3G release.
I only trust my local genius bar people (Ardmore PA, Apple Store), and they have confirmed that just about every single car charger/FM transmitter uses a "firewire bus" which is NOT compatible with the iPhone 3G. Even if it states on the box that it is "iPhone compatible" it still most likely uses a firewire bus. Apparently, there is only one car charger that is currently confirmed not to screw up your new iPhone, and I think it was one of the Belkins. Even if it says when you plug in the phone that it is working fine, it will apparently screw something up internally. I don't remember exactly what the created problem was.
Even going to another Apple store (King of Prussia PA, Apple Store), the concierge people and even genius bar people had no idea about the difference. And they were just telling people that everything that says "iPhone compatible" would work.
Give the genius bar at the Ardmore PA store a call if you can't take my word for it. They've already confirmed exchanging many phones (including one of the employees of the store) because of this problem.

I would be real curious to know how this works.
Right now I have a monster AUX cable plugged into the universal dock. The problem is when I want to make a call I must lean down and mess with the phone as it sits in the center/floor of my truck.
I wish there was a dock option where I don't have to plug the giant monster cable in on the top of the phone. :(

Unfortunately this model doesn't have AUX out from the docking station on the bottom. You do have to plug an AUX line out cable into the top of your iphone.
I'm actually returning this to get the the other model a previous poster got.
That one has AUX line out from the docking station at the bottom.

Here is a question I can't see to find answered.....
I use the parrot aftermarket bluetooth with the 3g. works great. I want to use a charger/fm transmitter..... should I expect any interferance?
If Im listening to a podcast or music on the fm transmitter will it go to the bluetooth call over the parrot?
What do you think?

I think you're freaking out over nothing. It's not going to damage the phone. The problem is that a lot of the later iPod chargers would allow charging for both USB and Firewire devices. Now the iPhone 3G only supports USB. If you have a device that supports both it will no longer work since the phone seems to pick up on the firewire support. It reads it as a device that won't work... or won't charge, rather. However I'm fairly certain any USB car charger would work fine. I bought a cheap no name brand one of eBay and it works great. The USB cable is separate from the part you actually put into the cig lighter. You plug the USB into that and connect the iPhone and the phone basically just sees it as you're powering from a USB source. Just my two cents.

For anyone interested in the Keningston LiquidAUX Deluxe, ANTOnline has it for 68.74 plus 8 shipping. I got mine a few days ago and it works great. At first, it kept disconnecting fromm the iphone. There is a little plastic part that you can remove from the bottom where the connector is. I assume this is for when you are using a case. I took that plastic out and now it doesn't disconnect anymore. The remote is pretty good too.

Flexible neck and the holder is cushioned on the sides and comes off. It also swivels as needed.
For charging, the Griffin iJolt I had for my first-gen iPhone still works. And my car stereo has an iPod adapter so I just plug my old mini in the glove box as needed.

My thread for the Belkin Tunebase FM (Model F8Z183):
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=533581
Works completely with the iPhone 3G.
@Sossner: My Tunebase transfers to my Plantronics Bluetooth earpiece just fine. It (the iPhone) fades the music out and everything goes through the the bluetooth earpiece except for the ringtone.
@Randman: Careful...some places in the US have ordinances against stuff stuck to the windshield and/or blocking the view below the rear view mirror. I got pulled over in South Dakota for hanging a pair of dog tags from my rear view mirror.

My problem is that my aux jack is in the center console. So if I got one of these dash or windshield mounts, I would have to have a cord stretching from there all the way to the center console. Fortunately, there is a charging receptacle next to the aux jack in the center console, but still I'm not sure what to do.
Currently I'm running the cord out of the center console and keeping the iPhone in the cupholder just outside the console next to me. This isn't ideal, as it's difficult to look down or pick up the phone and change anything.

Can you get like a 6' long headphone cord and run it discreetly from your dash to the center console?
I'm looking for an iPhone 3G specific car mounting solution, there are many generic solutions out there right now. I would really like a Pro-Clip solution but they don't have any iPhone 3G holders made yet.

I am after a mount for my wifes 3G. I bought her the Kensington windscreen which I thought was rather good but she said it looked ugly!
Anyway I am now trying to find a decent ven t mount the problem being that the vents in her car are angled like this (this isnt the same model as she has but it gives the general idea:

can anyone advise ( I have asked in some shops but I just get blank expressions back) I have looked online but am not sure how they fit to a vent so Cant tell if they will work with an angled vent

Okay, sorry for not posting back last night, completely forgot. I did however go back to pepboys btw. I ended up getting another one for my girlfriends iPhone as well, so I even snapped a pic of the holder in it's original case.

Should be able to find it at your local pepboys or autozone for $10 :)
My sister uses this. Works great and easy to mount

Can someone point me a link to buy online for this mount? I've already looked in autozone (we don't have pepboys in our area) but can't find one. I also tried Best Buy, Radioshack & Sears but still none.

First of all, great pics! I thought they were promo pics at first! Are the arms adjustable, spring-loaded or fixed? Also, is there an adhesive on the back or is it a vent-type mount?

Anyone actually using the iSqueez? If so, would it work with a skinned 3G? I've got a Power Support Air Jacket...

My problem in finding a vent holder is my vents are (as I have heard then referred to as) "bug eyes" type. The middle vent part sticks out the longest, with the ones immediately below & above the middle one shorter, and the ones at the top & bottom even shorter. SO does anyone have this Gomadic holder & if so, are the vent clip parts pretty long? Also wondering if the shorter vent parts will be a problem with the "support" thing in the back center.

I use this from ProClip USA. It's nice because it has an adjustable cradle depending upon your skin/case size. Works really well and I highly recommend it.

I've heard great things about Proclip. I'm trying to find a solution that will let me use proclip materials but not have to purchase their $100 iphone dock (includes charging and audio/video passthrough). I'm thinking about getting the Proclip mount for my car ($35) + the proclip iphone 3g mount ($30) + the Kensington Liquidaux ($55, not the deluxe which is $80) to charge the phone and move the audio port to the bottom of the dock. But that total is around $135 when you include shipping. Does anybody know of a cheaper alternative to the Kensington Liquidaux? I just need a charging and audio out cable so I don't have to have a big cable coming out of the top of my phone up by my dashboard.
I appreciate any assistance! :)

So you want an aux cable out + to charge your iPhone? Cause there's some mounts that can do that BUT they're F.M. transmitters

I guess I'm just looking for a cable that has an aux cable out (so I don't have to plug a cable into the top of the phone to get audio out) that also charges the phone. It would be fine if it has an FM transmitter too, I would just never use/need that functionality. I'm hoping there is like a $20-$30 generic solution instead of paying the extreme prices of Belkin or Kensington.

Oh I see. I haven't seen one that won't require to plug a cable into the top of the phone, just to get the audio out THAT also charges the phone. All I see so far are you either get the bottom part that charges that's also a transmitter (to get audio out but with static of course) or just get an audio out through the phone on top but the mount includes a charger that you have to also plug at the bottom.

I'm going to get a Brodit Proclip to hold the phone. Whenever I change phones I always get a new Brodit clip, you really can't beat them.
I want to be able to play the music through my factory-fitted stereo and charge at the same time. This would seem to do the job. I really don't like FM transmitter solutions at all, and I don't want any messy wires dangling around in my car. One wire into the stereo is all I want.
I just need to find a kit that will charge the iPhone from the Molex connector rather than the cigarette lighter.

Thanks, and sorry for not replying sooner. I haven't been back on the forums in awhile. To answer your questions though, yes, the arms are adjustable to fit other devices, and it also does come with an optional adhesive back bracket in case you choose to not mount it on the vent

Carcomm iPhone 3G mount (http://www.carcomm.nl/carcomm/webshop/index.cfm?page=productDetail&ModShopCatId=CE968E94-3048-737E-4E11C2F3ACF97928&ModShopProductId=ED94C57B-5056-8659-08446CB421724353)
- Charges
- Has audio output
- Windshield mount for GPS functionality
Has only one cable making it easy to tuck it away behind the dash for a neat install.
Thanks for mentioning this product. I am most certainly going to be following it's development! Would work perfect in both the personal and company car.

Hey, is that cassette thingie any better than fm-transmitters? I've been scratching my head with fm-transmitters, even gave up after hearing too many bad things about them. Luckily my volvo has a cassette deck too, so it might be worth a try. I guess I should try if it even works, never once have I tried if it works
I was so fed up with it that I even thought about this IMIV (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c89oMemaC04) setup, but it costs about 250e and I would need to rip open my dash and everything to install it. Although this has a lot of ups, song names, buttons on the steering wheel work with it etc.
Ah, now I remember why I didn't get it ultimately, it doesn't charge the 3G iphone...

Hey, is that cassette thingie any better than fm-transmitters?
i love my cassette deck adapter.
the sound is perfect, no need to look for a station, i can charge my iphone, the signal doesn't get interfered with.
honestly, i have one of those $20-30 itrip transmitters and it's total s*it.
actually i have 2. one from griffin and one from ... someone else. it doens't matter. i'm sticking with my deck adapter till i get a new deck with iPod integration or usb input.

I don't recommend these crappy ebay chargers
if you use them for extended periods of time ( like a road trip ) when using 3g and gps it willl actually overheat the charger and cause it to stop working

I bought a FM transmitter/dock/charger that recently stopped working. But I never use the FM transmitter because I can't find an empty radio frequency in southern California. :(
