If you haven't received this yet, you should soon, hopefully.

Kudos to Apple. They could have easily stopped at 30 days. This was unexpected, at least for me.

90 days free....I'll take it.

It has worked well since the 2nd week or so for me, so I am not too troubled :)

I also like how one of the hardest emails to read on an iphone came from apple.

About time… Except I still haven't gotten it yet nor have they fixed my domain issue. Now it tells me that I didn't add a TLD instead of saying it doesn't exist.

EDIT: I only got 30 days. w/e

Apple has sent out emails to MobileMe subscribers tonight revealing that they are extending all MobileMe subscriber accounts by 60 additional days:We have already made many improvements to MobileMe, but we still have many more to make. To recognize our users' patience, we are giving every MobileMe subscriber as of today a free 60 day extension. This is in addition to the one month extension most subscribers have already received. We are working very hard to make MobileMe a great service we can all be proud of. We know that MobileMe's launch has not been our finest hour, and we truly appreciate your patience as we turn this around. Read this article (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2826) for more details.

The MobileMe Team
Eligible individuals are those with an active MobileMe account as of August 19, 2008 at 0:00 Pacific Daylight Time. As well, customers with an active free trial as of August 19, 2008 at 0:00 Pacific Daylight Time will also see a 60 day extension to their free trial.

This 60-day extension is in addition to all previously offered extensions. All MobileMe customers were given a free 30 day extension (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/07/16/apple-sends-apology-letter-30-day-extension-to-mobileme-customers/) that was announced on July 16th. Some free trial customers affected by billing mistakes were later offered (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/07/19/apple-sends-another-mobileme-apology-e-mail-and-extension/) another free 30 day extension.

I am one of the those on the fence. We are through the first 30 day extension, and I still can't get my work PC to even log in. I was able to log in for the first three weeks (but no calendar sync - contacts OK), then blamo. No log-in. Keep getting the spinning wheel for about 10 seconds, then a dialog box saying "Unable to log in to MobileMe, please try again later." I have decided to leave it alone for a few days (or weeks if needed) until there is some solid information on a solution - checking these forums and Apple discussion groups regularly. The extra 60 days will help with the frustration.... if it gets fixed. I am holding out hope.

I am very glad they did this and WAYYY more glad that they freely admit to much more work needing to be done and have committed to doing it. MoblieMe is really lacking right now and the fact that they realize and admit this is a good thing. Perhaps this platform will not end up stagnant and defeated like .mac after all. YAY!

The potential is there and I am glad they realize it.

I just got this email as well. When I went to check my expiration date, they had credited me with the previous 30 day extension. I'm sure it will take awhile to register the new extension.

I think this is a good move on Apple's part. 90 days of free service should help compensate for all of the problems that MobileMe has experienced.

That is part of the deal Apple had to make with AT&T. If people didn't have to wait, than they would be getting new phones for dirt cheap all the time. AT&T would lose money.

As a late adopter for this particular CPU I am neither a victim nor a beneficiary of this event. The other CPU's I have have not logged on to this since the first anomoly was noted on this website.

I suspect they will be beneficiaries when/if I feel logging on is safe.

Here is a case where early adopters are punished by Apple. History repeats itself.

Steve, where is MacDraw with roundrecs for MacTel CPUs?

Gentlemen, I suggest treading lightly and backing up not only the primary sets but the backups themselves until further notice.

Remember Mac OS 7.0? Be scared. :)

Very happy about this extension and was thankfully spared most of the MoblieMe headaches. Actually MM helped me two weeks ago when someone accidently drenched my PB with Cote de Rhone. With the PB dead I was able to easily sync all my mail settings, Safari bookmarks (many years of them), calendar, and contacts all into a temporary iBook while I await the next line of MBP's to come out.

It's nice to now have a total of 90 days for free. I haven't had HUGE problems with mobileme, but then again:

-Push doesn't work for me at all (I only ever get email on my phone when I open the app)
-I have to delete most emails twice on the iPhone for them to actually delete.
-Email doesn't sync to the 'cloud' (such a dubious word/concept! but if fits so well with the ethereal non-working nature of the current service!) but strangely it does between my phone, iMac and MBP.
-I can only get calendar and contact updates to my phone if I turn off push, shut down reboot, then turn push back on.

I can live with all of these for now (after all, my phone company doesn't even provide Edge, much less 3G!), but I'd like to see them fixed for now.

Another 60 days, great! Funny how MobileMe is getting all the goodwill PR efforts whereas iPhone problems are being minimized as a quirky 2% of phones. Then again, iPhone's are flying off the shelves even if there are problems, so why admit there's a problem, I suppose.

So if you got the email your getting the extension? I ask because i got an email that my service expired (which is correct), but i still had 15 days to access the information etc...so by still being in the 15 days did that qualify me for the 60 day extension?

Heh sweet and unexpected. It's been fine for me since about day three aswell. I was a .Mac member until June 27th but I let it expire due to the upcoming MobileMe transition. Signed up for MobileMe on Day 1 and got garry@ which was a bit of an unexpected bonus.

So that's now:

60 day original free trial.
30 day original extension
30 day extension due to billing me £121 ;)
60 day with today's e-mail.

That means having signed up on July 11th, I'll be getting MobileMe for free until the middle of January. Fab.

i kno they dont want to support MS products but it is kind of annoying when I'm on a public computer and can't check my email (i can on my iphone but if its a long email i dont like reading it on there) because MM doesnt support IE. How much is Apple losing on all this free MobileMe stuff?

$8.33 USD per month in revenue for each single user plan.
$12.42 USD per month in revenue for each family plan.

If you figure they've given out 3 free months now in the US that's:

$24.99-37.26 per account.

Did you enable Push service on your iPhone?

To do this, select the Settings tool on your iPhone.
Touch the "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" menu selection.
Select your dotmac or mobileme Account.
Turn on options for Mail, Contacts, Calendars and Bookmarks.

Also, Select the Fetch New Data menu item,
Select an appropriate Fetch frequency for your other eMail accounts (I am assuming these are not set to Manual? which might explain your problem.)

It also sounds, from your comment that you might not be usine AT&T?

How much is Apple losing on all this free MobileMe stuff?

Probably not as much money they would lose by people not renewing their subscription had Apple not extended people's subscriptions for free, given all the recent hassles.

This is good from Apple. They extended 1 month for all, but a further 60 days is great.

MobileMe will go down in history at Apple as an example of what happens when things go wrong. Lessons will be learnt.

Am I eligible for the 60-day extension?
You are eligible if you are a MobileMe member whose account was active as of August 19, 2008 at 0:00 Pacific Daylight Time.

Another 60 days... At this rate I'll never actually get round to paying for a subscription.

Signed up when it was first available: 60 days free
Billing problems: 30 days free
Previous extension: 30 days free
New extension: 60 days.

180 days free, think that extends it into sometime next year! :D

but not in ICAL...WTF?!

Where is the push? I need to manually sync... NOT GOOD!
Iphone and me.com sync instantly but not with computers....
What the hell....

This has been discussed to death. Manually sync or sync every 15 minutes on computers. Surely you don't need it instantly. They're working on it apparently.

Didn't get that email and didn't get an extension. My service is set to expire on October 9th.

The web site is still wicked flaky -- more bugs than a piece of Windows software.

Since apple is now going green I guess they didn't want to use any pesticide... (yeah, its bad)

I guess if they figured either 1) to run windows on mac, their software and services should be buggy as ever or 2) most people lived with it so ling, especially the windows converts, that they would be use to the bugs and patches and now the constant reboots when patch and updating, so take some shortcuts, use sub-par parts- 'but they build the hardware and software to work together and give the best support'...

Is a Mac reliable?

When you buy a PC, you’re buying hardware from one company and an operating system and software from other companies. Not so with a Mac. Because Apple builds both the computer and the software that comes with it, they’re literally made for each other. This means that a Mac rarely freezes or crashes. Occasionally an application might quit, but it won’t affect the rest of your system. And Mac OS X resists most viruses, so you can do anything — without worrying about losing everything.

What kind of support can I expect?

Every Mac comes with service and support that’s consistently voted the best in the business. If you have a problem in the first year of owning your new Mac, you can take it to an Apple Retail Store to get it fixed or figured out. And if you purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan, you extend your service and support to up to three years. The Apple Retail Store also offers services like ProCare, which gives you priority support, and One to One, which provides weekly personal training on your Mac. Each service costs $99 a year.

30 days plus 60 days should bring me to an expiration in January 2009, not December 2008. I'll give Apple a few days to fix this. If it's not fixed shortly, I'm gonna call

I like the fact that they have given the extension to people who are still in the free trial. This will allow Apple to get MobileMe up to their promised standards, and will give me time to evaluate weather or not it is worth paying for once they do have everything fixed.

So, after letting my account languish a while, I login to check my account profile to see if I've been given moar, but the password re-confirmation page takes me to the password re-confirmation page.

I logout, I log back in, and now, "Your MobileMe Mail is currently unavailable.
We apologize for this service interruption and are working hard to resolve the problem."

In addition, a friend with a shiny new iPhone was telling me that a combination of MM and Exchange sync was eating up usage=>battery on an otherwise idle box. Why are pushes not batched to less regular intervals when the phone is obviously not in use or, if the server doesn't support that, the phone reverts to polling?

Awesome.

I've had a few problems here and there, but my email has been pretty consistent, my iDisk has always worked and I've not had any problems syncing iCal or Address Book.

Yep. I got the email too. It was sitting in my gmail this morning (ok I have forwarding turned on - as I have 3 email accounts right now). Checked my account though. I am a little confused....

As someone else pointed out:

60 day original free trial + 30 days free for first mobileme outage + 60 more days for this email = 150 days of free mobileme..

But my account shows expiring on October 9th. I signed up on July 13th. Maybe they have not updated the accounts yet? My account should say expiring in December. I hope this does not mean 90 days total - which would only give me the 30 day extension?

This is kind of interesting because one thread has said that apple was going to take to the end of the year to get it straightened out. so this means that anyone who signed up in July, should be getting the bumpy period free...

Let's hope my account is updated today to show December as the expiration.

Even if we do spend money for a storage client and 20GB of cloud space.... Its money well spent because I, for one, love the push mail services! They have been working fabulously and it doesnt even take a second for my mail to be pushed! As for the storage.... I hate FTP..... and all services offering a web GUI (obviously none as slick as Apple's) are considerably expensive!

But most importantly.... This Thread is not the place to discuss this! You're breaking forum rules when you intentionally post something completely off thread topic! There are many more discussions in MMe forum! Post your thoughts there and they'll be better responded to!

While I will accept the additional free time, I feel rather guilty about it. I am another one that has worked correctly since about day #2.

Are the problems experienced by others both on OS X and Windows?

these are just some of the problems I had.

Before my last windows machine died, 90% of my sync'ing problems were using MM on Windows in Outlook. It screwed my outlook bad.

1. Sync with my mac - upload to cloud. Windows sync kicks off - overwrote and deleted cloud rather than importing my calendar and contacts.

2. When deleting appointments, they showed up in Outlook's Deleted Items as calendars rather than appts. When I tried to permately delete them, it said I did not have permission to delete this folder. I was kinda confused as my google sync did it correctly.

3. Logging on to the Web Interface. This one always confuses me. I have Firefox on my work computer (Dell). I also had it on my personal Dell laptop that died. Both firefox's were the same version and build. Now the first day or 2 I had problems with the perpetual loading on both machines. What confuses me now, is just before that laptop died, the web interface on my laptop and also on my macbook work fine. However, on my work desktop - I still get the perpetual loading some times. I even did a test with each laptop and my work computer and hit keys at the exact some time. Macbook, Dell Laptop went fine. My work Dell tower - perpetual loading. there is something the web interface does not like about my Dell tower. The only difference is the Dell tower is logged into a VPN (I work from home, so the router and everything is the same across all machines).

4. When decomissioning the now dead windows machine, I uninstalled out look - but forgot to turn off the sync. the sync kicked off and rather than erroring since it could not find outlook, or giving me a warning (like it does when your machine is update - x% is about to change, and then shows the number of additions, merges, and deletions) - it deleted my cloud. luckily my mac gave me the warning that data was about to change on my mac, so that I could cancel and repush manually to the cloud. this is kinda a problem should your computers get out of sync (like if you do not use one for a while - or you do an uninstall and reinstall [like you always have to with windows products])

Now that I do not have anymore personal Windows machines, the only problems I have is with my mac address book. on my mac, I have 27 contacts. No matter what I do, only 23 go to the cloud. 1 of them I can see not uploading properly as it is a duplicate (first and last name fields - email address and phone numbers are different). Which kinda stinks if I actually did use this for work, because we have to John Doe's (real name omitted), and they are actually 2 different people in 2 different depts). the other 3 entries - I have no idea why they will not go to the cloud. I even did a manual reset and push to the cloud. Still only 23 contacts.

Hey imagine that, the e-mail announcing this went to my mobile Me account and didn't push to my phone. It downloaded it as I opened the mail client on the phone after reading this thread. The fetch didn't even get it. :)

EXACTLY the same for me!! Way too funny!

One of the things I really dislike about MobileMe is the name. EVERY-TIME I see it I think of Windows Me. From Wikipedia--

"Shortly after Windows Me was released (2000), Microsoft launched a campaign-initiative to promote Windows Me in the United States, which they dubbed the Meet Me Tour. A national partnered promotional program featured Windows Me, OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) and other partners in an interactive multi-media attraction in 25 cities across the United States.....Windows Me had a short shelf-life of just over a year; it was soon replaced by the NT-based Windows XP, which was launched on October 25, 2001."

What other choice do they have? The service doesn't work properly and if they didn't extend this olive branch people would have cancelled anyhow. They're not losing that much from giving free service anyhow, the servers still would have been up and running regardless.

What will happen if MM still isn't sorted in another 2 months? Hand out additional extensions on a subpar service?

This is just getting ridiculous, if anything - hard to justify... I am seriously considering leaving this service... as I only really use it for my 3 iweb sites, which I could just as well upload to another cheaper host.

Sure I have .me mail....hardly use it. Don't do any idisk, back to my mac or syncing (apparently I'm the only person who doesn't like laptops) and I work from home.

My anniversery was Aug 16 and I've been hoping that some of the new MM stuff and my iphone would help me appreciate it more.

I'm beggining to question my logic here...

Can anyone recommend a reliable and affordable web hosting service?

I just wish I could get an iphone. I can't get one at the 'member price' until February! AT&T won't let me 'upgrade equipment' until them...:(

Still wondering what purpose it serves to deny your customers the ability to upgrade their phones...

This really confuses me. What's the 'member price'? I just broke down and bought an iPhone this past Sunday, and it seems like I didn't get any special deals, although I am eligible for an upgrade...

Not complaining, I'm actually really excited for it to come in (too bad I have to wait over a week... blah), and also really excited about the great, new price. I've heard a couple of people mention the 'member benefits'; however, this was not mentioned to me in store.

I have not tried them yet - but people have told me about them and they claim to have been using them for years.

Me.... I am still iffy myself. With all the free extensions, I have not cancelled yet. if google every came out with a contact sync (other than their API which requires programming), or busymac/bucysync started including contacts I would be gone in a heartbeat.

But with the free extensions, I'll keep holding out. when the extensions end - and then I have problems then I will cancel.

Well, works out great for all us trial people. If we signed up early enough our free 60 days turned into 150 days. So which means we can keep using the service for free, ride the rollar coaster and then have longer to decide if the features are really worth keeping or not.

But truthfully, if there was a good contact sync for Google, I may be outta here. I only got MM for the syncing and webhosting. google now solves 90% of MM features and I can get hosting else where. For now I am riding the rollar coaster for free to see what the final outcome will be.

For me this is not mission critical, I am not trying to run a business off it. I also run google and busysync (which my trial is about to expire, I need to buy it) so I have a backup. and what is cool is that with MM and busysync my MM and google calendars are on both web interfaces and in my ical. so I can see all side-by-each (as they say in Woonsocket, RI). I also have forwarding turned on, so that every email goes to my gmail for the time being.

Right now though with its features - gmail is winning except I need to sync contacts. I never use back-to-my-mac because my laptop is not on all the time.

You think MM is difficult - anyone every tried to use AOL over the last 2 years with all their changes; especially to the web interface. Yeesh.... Makes MM look like 100% uptime. Now that my job pays for my DSL and I don't use dial up, i swiched to free AOL and am about to drop AOL together (except that I am afraid if I drop it, since my wife is a screen name under me - I am afraid she will lose it also). she uses the chat rooms heavily for her ministry.

Everyone raise their hands that didn't get the message because MobileMaybe was down again.

I'm not clear what the problem is that they are reacting to. Is it that the mail service goes down from time to time? Mine seems to have hiccups every now and then, but only recently do I get free extensions, and I don't think these hiccups will go away until they have better servers and all that.

Or is it specifically iPhone? The email they sent is unclear. I'm subscribed over two years, so it's not really a false advertisement problem for me, but is that why?

But a working app is better. Why would I pay for a broken app?

I still can not send a message from my aliased MobileMe account on my iPhone. Nor does Apple offer any means to convert a useless alias into an actual account. Nor does Apple tell you that an aliased account is useless and should not be used. Nor does Apple EVER free up a once used Alias account -- so if you foolishly think you can use your name in an aliased account, the only way to get it working is to move to another provider.

The only thing the extension has done is postpone my eventual abandonment of MobileMe.

Huh?

Yeah, you should be eligible, and, no, it's not surprising that you haven't yet gotten your extra 60 days. Jeez, read this forum. For some people, it supposedly took Apple nearly a month to credit them the first free 30 days. I was lucky, and got mine within a week or so, but you should be prepared to wait a while.

I understand how you feel however don't speak too soon about MM not being worth paying for. At this point Apple has acknowledged that they messed up badly and most likely they will make up for it by adding a lot of exciting features to it and make it run better than any free or paid online app. You'll be back.;)

Yup, sure they will :). Its comments/speculation like this that made me keep .mac so long. Guess what? Apple didn't deliver anything new or exciting, and less reliability. And, it was about a year later than expected(new exciting features). IF they ever do, sure I may be back, but for now. Bu-bye.

This is great for me because, although I haven't had any problems until now other than the odd delayed push, my email now seems to be "over quota" whenever I CC myself in on a message using my work address, suggesting I'm not receiving all my email. I may have to set my googlemail address back to being my main account...

Bleah, my account summary page now says that my expiration is in December, but my Account Options page says that my subscription would now begin in September (this is a trial account). The subscription start date used to be in October (this was after the first 30 days was added). Has anyone else seen Apple take away the start date?

Sigh, Apple has more work to get things right.

So if I have a .Mac 5.0 box ready and waiting until after the trial is over, should I wait until this next 60 day extension is over before adding it?

Got the email about the extension, checked my account this morning and bingo!! I'm good to go, no renewal worries now until January. That's pretty cool!!! My original subscription would have renewed in October. I haven't had any issues with MobileMac, it's worked fine for me. I am not turning down this little gift, though! :)

Those boxes are only good for about 9 months before the key code expires.

If you don't want to lose your trial and extension you'll need to register it right before your account would auto charge you, otherwise you lose any additional time.

IE.Signed up for trial, had 59 days left.. entered key code. You'd have 365 days left, not 365+59.

By the way I just got my 60 days additional today.

I signed up on the 3 hrs before the deadline and I got my 60 days! Been using it now for a few days but aside from setting up the gmail forwarding to me.com to get "push" I don't know what else I would use it for...

I need to find out what else I can do with mobileme
