OK, this question comes up all the time, "How do I share files between my Mac and PC". So, here is the answer. I'm hoping we can make this "Sticky" and save everyone time :)
I think I have remembered everything, if you think there is somthing I've missed then please post and let me know.
Networking Windows (2000/XP/2003*) with Mac OS X (10.3/10.4)
Information you will need to know
• The IP Address of your PC (Start > Run > CMD {return} > “ipconfig” {return})
• The IP Address of your Mac (Applications > Utilities > Terminal {Run app} > for ethernet connection “ipconfig getifaddr en0” {return} or for wireless "ipconfig getifaddr en1" {return})
• The workgroup the PC is in (Right click on My Computer, select Properties, and select the Computer Name tab)
System Configuration
It is important that the account you log in with on your XP system has a password set, if it does not you will not be able to login to your Windows share from OS X.
You need to put your Mac in the same workgroup as your Windows PC. To do this open “Directory Access” (Applications > Utilities > Directory Access). Click on the padlock in the bottom left corner to make changes; you will be prompted for your password. If “SMB” is not ticked off, then tick it off. Select “SMB” and hit the “Configure…” button. Now enter the name of your Windows workgroup. In my case the name is “AD”.
http://upc.edesignuk.com/uploads/forums/mac_directory_access.png
Setting up the PC to share files
You need to create and share a folder on your PC that you will then access from your Mac.
To do this create a folder (or select and existing one) right click on it from Windows Explorer and select “Properties”. Select the “Sharing” tab and share out the folder. I’d recommend you use a one word name for the share. For example “mac”, not “Apple Mac Share”, it just narrows the risk of complications.
http://upc.edesignuk.com/uploads/forums/Windows_shared_folder.jpg
Setting up the Mac to share files
Open “System Preferences” (Applications > System Preferences). Go to “Sharing” under “Internet & Network”, and tick off “Windows Sharing”, and if it doesn’t start by itself, click “Start”. This will share out your entire home folder.
http://upc.edesignuk.com/uploads/forums/mac_sharing.png
If You're running Tiger (10.4), you will also need to click the "Accounts" button and tick off the box next to your account name so that OS X knows to share out your particular home folder.
http://upc.edesignuk.com/uploads/forums/mac_enable_acc_share.jpg
Accessing your Mac from your PC
Click “Start > Run” and enter “\\192.168.1.2\edesignuk”, replacing the IP address with the IP address of your Mac, and “edesignuk” with the short user name of your account in OS X. When asked to authenticate enter your Mac accounts short user name and password. All being well you should now be able to see you entire home folder on your OS X system. You can also map this share like you would any other Windows network share so that it is accessible from a drive letter.
Accessing your PC from your Mac
To mount a Windows share on your Mac, click on your desktop so that Finder is the active application, from the Finder menu go to “Go > Connect to Server”. In the “Server Address” field enter “smb://192.168.1.3/mac”, replacing the IP address with the IP address of your PC, and “mac” with the name of the Windows share you created earlier.
http://upc.edesignuk.com/uploads/forums/mac_connect_to_server.png
When asked to authenticate enter the name of your PC in “Workgroup/Domain” (Unless your PC is part of a domain and your PC account is held on a domain controller, in which case enter the domain that you normally log on to Windows with). For “Username” and “Password” enter the username and password which you use to log on to your Windows machine with. Click ok and your shared folder should be mounted as a network drive on your desktop.
Get error "The alias "<shared folder>" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found."?

*Windows Server 2003 Authentication
By deafult Windows Server 2003 will try to encrypt everything sent to and from it. With this enabled you will not be able to log in to the share from your Mac.
To fix this there are a couple of options.
Case 1, your server is nothing more than a regular file server. In this case open up regedit (Start > Run > "regedit" {return}), and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ System \ CurrentControlSet \ Services \ LanManServer \ Parameter \ RequireSecuritySignature, and set it's value to "0".
Case 2, your server is also a Domain Controller. In which case you need to open the DC's Security Policy (Administrative Tools > Domain Controller Security Policy). Navigate to Local Policies > Secuiry Options, and disable "Microsoft network server: Digitally sign communications (always)" & "Microsoft network server: Digitally sign communications (if client agrees)". Reboot your sever, and you should be good to go.

Just wondering, is there a way to network Win98 with Panther? And what about networking Windows with Jaguar?
I'm sure there are still some people out there with older systems with that question. I can't try it out because I don't have a single PC in the house :).

@mms
With regards to Win98, there probably is, but I have nothing running Win98 to try it on. Win98 was never great at networking with other windows systems anyway. Windows NT was for networking.
As for Jaguar, I think most of it should be the same, except where you enable Windows Sharing in System Preferences (I'm sure it's in a different place in Jag), but again, I don't have Jag to be able to check things.

YAY!... perhaps we could start a simple site that gives step by step instructions for a lot of these frequently asked questions. I know it would help out a lot of people, especially those who don't like joining forums for whatever reason they have.
I know I'd be in to help with some write-ups.
PS: edesignuk: nice job, very thorough and easy to follow.

For what it's worth, you can avoid using Terminal for your IP address by going Apple>About this Mac>More Info>Network.

a very nice collection of recent threads and other networking solutions which brought a lot of things together very nice.. thanks edesignuk..
I want to say that most of the things can be implemented on Jaguar too.. but you should enable "windows file sharing" on Sharing menu in System Preferences..
by the way, what is Windows 2003?? I have used Win2000, I'm using XP but never saw the Win2003? is it longhorn? ???

2003 is the latest server OS from Microsoft, but some use it as a desktop OS.

It is also worth mentioning that there is a nice APP called DAVE which is designed to allow mac-pc networking.
This will link a mac with any microsoft OS from WIN 95+

And not free I would imagine? + another thing installed on both systems that can go wrong, no, this is the way to do it, using what is built in to both systems.

You are right it is not free... but you only need to install it on one system not both.
The reason I mentioned DAVE is that the method you described only covers WIN 98 and above, DAVE also covers WIN 95 which someone mentioned in this thread.. I just forgot to quote them!

Does this apply to more enterpeise level netwroking or only for small (home) networks.
Also how different is this to using 10.2.8 and win2k server.
I'm tryingto help some PC network people become more mac friendly in a corporate world
Thanks for the help

@pdgnyc85
This should apply to any network, it's all the same.
I think the only difference in 10.2.8 is where you enable Windows File Sharing on the Mac, it's still in System Prefs, but in a different place (can't remember where, and I don't run Jag anymore to check).

Ok, for the life of me I can't get networking between my Powerbook and Win2K IBM box. I've tried all the online guides I could find (about 10 thorough ones or so). They are connected by a Netgear router and both have no problem getting on the Internet.
I'm running 10.2.7 and 10.3.2 on the Mac both will not connect. I've made a new user account on the IBM just to see if that'd help, no luck.
In Panther's Finder (Network) the workgroup of the IBM shows up as NET (what I named it from Control Panel) but no shares can be seen. In Jag when I Connect to Server I get -36 error.
Please can someone tell me what else to do, check or try.

I've had this working before on my brothers xp box but i have to log on using my username/password. is there anyway so that the win computer can access certain folders i wish to share without having a user account sert up on the mac or using my un/pass, possibly using the Public folder? I dont want to give my brother my password just so he can access some files i want to share from my mac. I can access shared folders on my win98 box from my mac...when they want to show...its very hit or miss whether panthers network icon in the finder shows the windos boxes or not.

Yes, but that will envolve manually editing your smb.conf, something that I don't know much about, sorry.

Is there a way to let other windows-users access my shared files only?
I do not want to give away the password of my account, and I do not want them to be able to see all my files. So is there an easier way to do it than to make a profile called "windows" or something, with the password "windows", and let people log on to that one? (Then they can navigate to my shared folders, but it is kind of a clumsy way...)
Great guide btw. :)

Hey there. I have a Win98 machine setup as well as my iBook and have successfully networked the too. 10.3.2 I have had some buggy issues, but hopefully its been fixed in 10.3.3. Basically you want to setup Windows sharing on your mac. Then in the finder go to Network. At this point whatever your win network groups name is will show up as a folder under network. Clicking on that folder will bring up the machines names that is uses. Click on the machine you want to connect to and click connect. SMB Mount (10.3.3) will appear and select the drive that you want to mount. Click ok. (10.3.3 & 10.3.2) When SMB/CIFS Filesystem Authentication comes up just his ok. This should mount the drive. Thus you can connect to the Win98 machine. I have done this a # of times. Should work as far as I know. Sorry if it doesn't.

Great guide edsignuk, thanks for that.
I have a problem I'm hoping someone might be able to help me with.
I'm using OS X 10.3.3 and Quark 6.1. All my Quark pages are saved on a shared volume on a server running Windows Server 2003.
I can get network access to all the pages with no problems but when I make a change to a page and 'apple + s' to save, the page renames itself (eg. qxp123456789012.qxp) on the server and throws up a 'file not found (-43)' error.
Very annoying. Can anyone help? I'm positive it's a network issue because if we share pages from a mac (instead of sharing from the 2003 server) everything is fine.
Thanks.

It don't work!
I'm trying to connect to our Win2000 machine at work, and it just won't go, it can't find me and I can't find it!
The PC comes up in the "Connect to Server > Browse" thing, but I cannot connect through their, nor the SMB...IP address thing.
The Win2000 machines are currently running an older version of ExtremeZ-IP to allow connecting to the OS9 machines, could this be interferring with my OSX machine?

AHHH i'm still having a lot of trouble connecting to my windows pc on my mac using smb...i'm constantly getting -36 errors. I've read all over about this error but no one has ever seemed to solve it. I know they see each other fine because i used the ping tool and that worked good. My pc can access my mac fine because rendezvous was working good on the pc side only. Does anyone have any good suggestions of what i may be doing wrong when connecting to the server. Does it matter where the shared folder is on the windows pc...i've tried tons of different ones but i always get the same error. ahhh please help  thanks

Does your Windows PC have an account setup with a password. AFAIK it is VERY important that the account has a password. This was always a problem with Win9* connecting to NT server file shares, could be the same here.

So... what happens when the standard Mac-PC instructions do not work...
I am having no luck setting up windows file sharing on my G5 running 10.3.3 so that a Windows XP machine in my lab can access it. I've turned Windows file sharing on, set the appropriate privileges, and set the proper windows workgroup in Directory Access. SMB is also turned on in Directory Access. Despite all of this, every time I try to connect to the G5 from the XP machine using the standard procedures (i.e., "\\computer\shortname", I get something like "Network Drive Cannot be Found...."
I have tried going into the the smb.conf file directly and also using SharePoints to create a new share, all to no avail. Interestingly, I also cannot ftp into my G5, despite having that also tuned on in the sharing panel. AFP works fine though between the g5 and other macs in the lab.
I have also tried repairing privileges and repairing the drive. Did not fix the problem.
Firewall is turned off.
Interestingly, I can connect from the xp to another iMac in the lab (running jaguar), but not my G5. This makes me wonder whether I have a hidden configuration problem on my G5?
Any ideas about what might be going awry here or things I could try? I'm really pulling my hair out.
Thanks.

If your running a Windows server with NetBIOS turned off you will need to open port 445 on your OS X firewall also.
Handy to know Rendezvous Ports that need to be open for app sharing on your firewall:
iChat: 5297, 5298
iTunes: 3689
iPhoto: 8770
SubEthaEdit v1.x: 30729
SubEthaEdit v2.0: 6942-6951 ("Six times nine is fourtytwo")

Thanks for the instructions, but it seems that when my Windows XP machine connects to my OS X machine, there's no password prompt! It can grab files and everything. I have a password on my OS X user account, so what's the deal? I don't want this stuff available for everyone, since I'm using Wi-Fi here.

Great info, this will come in handy. I am having a problem with a G4 machine. It is connected to a network and is using a Windows machine as a proxy to the internet. I'm using AnalogX as the proxy.
The problem is that the G4 cannot access any ftp sites even though i have on the ftp configuration on the G4 and in AnalogX. The windows machine access the ftp sites without any problems.
Any ideas as to what i can try..?

Great posting - I was able to get my Mac onto a Win Server 2003 network no problem as a result.
One question though - what is the impact on network security of disabling the "Microsoft network server:...."?
Also, when I used this method I am only able to mount shared volumes on the PC's - is there a way that you know of where it would be possible to log on to the server's file system more direclty so that can navigate through the as much of its file system as your specific user name is allowed to?
Thanks.
Hi everyone, I come to this forum looking for help, and I've hope that you can do it :D
I've a Macintosh G4 350Mhz, etc with Panther and a Pecee with Xp professional, both computers works fine but in the networking is the prob... both computers are attached to a swich and shared internet connection in the swich with a ADSL Modem (Arescom NetDSL 1000) how provide like a router and make the adress to both computers.
So the problem is when in try to share the computers the Windows doen't have a problem to see and connect to the mac, but when I try to make the same with the mac it asking for a login and password and dont work... I try all the things in this topic but no one can make a difference.
I try installing the Dave and the same prob... try to put the same login and pass for windows and mac, but dont work.
The only difference when I try to login with or without dave is when I dont use dave my mac says wrong pass or login, and dave says can't resolve the network.
Both computers are in the same workgroup and when I make a ping from one to other, there are no problem... what can I do?
Thankz a lot

Great guide, thank you. Got me up and running in no time flat. Three things for Windows XP users.
1. Most users don't set a default local password on their main account. If you do so (as per this guide) you'll have to login every time you start your machine. For home users, a bit annoying.
2. If you use the XP Networking Wizard to setup local file sharing (you can, it works great) be aware that XP turns on its firewall *by default*. This can cause problems.
3. After setting your system up, reboot. It sounds silly but this was the last step I had to do to get this to work.

After printing this thread out twice and waiting for over a month to really get at it, I finally got it! :D :D :D I have a small LAN at work with 2 G3's running OS 9.2.2, a UMAX S900 clone running 8.6, 2 PCs running Win2K, and our PLatesetter RIP on a PC running WinNT4.0 Since there was no real "server" in the group and all were just connected via ethernet I was having a really hard time getting one of my G3s (now running Panther 10.3.4) to connect to anything  Today I took a print out of this thread and walked around the shop getting all the info I needed (ip's, workgroups, user names, etc.) and after a few hours was able to "see" the PCs and Macs without the use of smoke and mirrors  One of the G3's on 9.2.2 sits as a "Customer File Server" and the Clone is only used when we have way too much work and the receptionist has to come up front and help get out Letterheads and Business cards. ;)
Now I have this last question; How can I make the "images" of my RIP and "server" automatically mount each time I start up? Would it require a script in the start up prefs or is there an easier way?
PS. after much searching and researching I found this thread to be the most helpful to my networking solutions, but could you include WinNT also? It doesn't have the same "interface" as does 2K or XP Thank You, Thank You, Thank You :D :D :D

I registered just for this thread! Of course I'm going to stick around, I've been meaning to register here anyway.
So my question... I've set up an ad-hoc wireless network in my dorm room. between my Windows XP Pro Desktop and G4 Powerbook running OS 10.3.5.
I've got some shares setup as described in this thread, however I am never prompted for a password. My logins for both machines were indeed the same, so I changed my login password on my Powerbook, but I am still able to browse my Powerbook from the desktop without ever having to put in a user name or password. I don't like this at all. I carry my Powerbook around campus connecting to wireless, and I'd rather not have other people freely browsing my computer. I'd also like to have a password setup on my Windows machine, because it is exposed to the whole network in my dorm building.
So basically, I need to know how to require authentication to get into my Windows Shares, and how to enable authentication for my Powerbook share. Hopefully I'm missing something obvious. Any help is greatly appreciated.
[Edit]
Ok, I did what usually helps with windows... I rebooted. After the reboot, it wouldn't let me access my Powerbook without the new password I setup for my user. GREAT. However, I can still access my shares located on my Windows machine from my Powerbook without having to type in any user names or passwords. So now my question is, how can I require a user name and password login for the share I have on my Windows machine?
[Edit 2]
Well I did some more digging and figured it out. Windows XP Home doesn't allow password protection of shares apparently. XP Pro does after you tinker with it some. This page was very helpful to me, for anyone else who's looking to do the same thing.

I want to be able to connect my MAC and PC using a crossover cable. I am on a wireless network which works fine, but for transfering data, it is slow due to the fact of the distance of my PC. I have followed the steps of this thread, but I don't know if now the two are in fact transfering through the cable or through the wirelss network. Is there any way for me to be able to check this? It still seems to transfer slow, but before I start to transfer big files, I want to make sure it is infact going through the cable.

Y'know I was about to post almost the exact same question. I have an old Compaq Presario (700Mhz Duron, 192MB, WinME) which the rest of my family uses as their computer. Anyway, it's been (as one might expect) screwing up majorly of late, so I'm just gonna do a fresh install. I want to back up the HD onto my Powerbook first of all. I already had a wireless network set up, but for transferring 15GB I didn't think that was the best option. So, I went out, bought a NIC, installed it and have been struggling for the past two days to get my PB to talk to it. I have a crossover cable between the two, but it just ain't happening. I can't even ping the PC (through the NIC, but I can over WiFi). It would probably have been quicker to just do the slow transfer, but I'm determined to get it to work now. The NIC has an IP address, etc. but it just doesn't seem to be communicating to my PB.... any ideas?
Cheers guys!

What I tried last night was I created another network and just disabled the wireless one while I tried this. I can open up the status and it's shows stuff being sent and received, but I still can't find them and when I ping it says "host is down". whenever I just enter the IP's, it never finds them, so now I don't know. I'll probably continue to play with it today. I wondered if to transfer data of this size, would a firewire IEEE cable be better, since it does transfer data at faster speeds. anyone know if that would work?

in my opinion this way is easier. it was on the oreilly site. it works with win 2k and xp but i don't now if it'll work for 2k3.
first share the folder or drive you want to get files from or whatever. there are instructions in this guide on how to share a folder.
next find out the workgroup/domain and name of the pc. by right-clicking on "my computer" and click on "properties" then go to the tab "network identity(or something like that)" the name and domain/workgroup should be shown there.
now go to the mac with os x and go to the menubar and go to go>connect to server or just press cmd + k, then for the server address type in smb://"name of domain/workgroup";"name of computer"/"name of shared folder/drive" (without the quotes). a login windows thing should show up and you just put in the right login info for the pc and press connect or login or whatever.
for example say the workgroup/domain of the pc is "workgroup" the name of the computer is also "win2k" and the shared folder/drive is "shared". you would type in the server address box "smb://workgroup;win2k/shared" save it as a favorite server so you won't have to type it again if you forget.
sorry its so long. but this way you don't have to find out the ip address if it changes. but then it might not work with win2k3....

I finally got it working to, though I do have a little more explanation as to how I rectified the problem. My inability to Samba to the Windows PC over the ethernet connection (as opposed to over WiFi, which worked fine), was due to the fact that my network preferences in Mac OS X were such that it would always try to establish a connection over Airport before anything else. It would appear that the way it does it is that when I gave it the IP address of the NIC in the Windows computer it would try and ping that IP over Airport, and when it couldn't find it, it would just report that such a connection could be established, as opposed to then trying other methods...
Thus, what I had to do was to put Ethernet above Airport in the order of priorities (in network preferences)... this made it work absolutely fine... though it did mean that I was disconnected from my wireless network (and thus also the internet) for the duration of the time I was transferring files (approx. 1 hour).
Hope this might help someone else who has similar problems in the future!
Cheers! :D

Edesignuk - I've been using this process to move files between my Mac and other PCs in the office for a couple of months - no problems.
Today - working on the PC and clicking my little "Jim's Mac" screen icon, I enter my user name and the dialog box says the Mac won't recognize it.
I recently had to run a re-install of the OS X files, could that have changed my user name or otherwise altered the connection between the Mac and PC?
I know the machines can "see" each other, and I have no problem connecting to the PC from the Mac, but can't get the Mac to "open it's door" to the PC when going in that direction.
Ideas?

Few things to check.
-Is Windows File Sharing still enabled on the Mac since the reinstall?
-Is the firewall turned off, or still allowing Windows File Sharing connections on the Mac since the reinstall?
-How is you shortcut on windows setup? \\mac.i.p.address\username or \\maccomputername\share, has either of these things changed on the Mac since the reinstall that would cause the shortcut not to work?
-Double check your OS X short username & password from the accounts section in system prefs.
Short of that, I'd re run though ALL the steps again and see what happens.
Good luck!

Nice thread thanks for the info.
Just to add to another interesting problem, I have two PCs connecting to a B/W G3 running OS X 10.3.5 the PCs are running XP Sp2
When the PCs have a file open on the server from word or other applications it will crash the app on the PC when you try to save and say it cant find the server.
There are two problems, 1 is that power save is turned on in the advanced features for the networking card, the pc turns its card off! thats cool on a desctop:-) select properties for the connection then advanced for the device and uncheck the power save feature.
second is an network autodisconnect that is default at 15 minutes! the bitch is its in the registry, so you have to find it and hack it, I donloaded instructions on an NT hack for this and it worked fine, I will try and find them and post them here, or just do a google for it.
If you have a problem like this the information manager will give you an error number, looking it up on MS just tels you they know about it! no fix

Congratulations!!! And welcome to the club.
Regarding router - may I suggest AirPort Extreme? I use it and so far everything is OK. I connected PC with the Ethernet cable to the AirPort Extreme (AE), and my PowerBook is connected wirelessly. AE has also NAT, so you are immediately behind the firewall. Now after long long long awaited firmware update AE works like a charm with DSL modem. Highly recommended. You will have freedom to move with your iBook, and solid connection at the same time.

I have followed your guide (and many help files & docs) about accessing a share on my PC running Win2Kpro from my eMac running OS 10.2. Your guide is the best, but I have one remaining problem. My eMac connects (via Finder/Go/ConnectServer) to my PC share once in the morning, but if that connection is broken in any way (orderly or accidental), I get Error -36 on all subsequent tries until the next morning. Restarting one or both systems makes no change. The PC audit/logs the successful login, file access, & logoff, but logs nothing about the later connection failures, so I suspect the problem cause is other than PC security/permissions. How do you suggest I proceed to find my problem cause and cure?

I downloaded a trial version of DAVE, and now the Mac can *SEE* two workgroups (or domains) on the network, and it can see several computers on one of those workgroups. Unfortunately, it's the wrong workgroup. The computers in workgroup to which I want to connect are invisible to me for now. Very weird.

After following this I still have no luck. Been trying for 6 months to get this to work and it just won't.
When connecting via SMB it just keeps asking for my password for the PC and keeps telling me it's wrong though i KNOW i'm typing it correctly. I've even tried both uppercase and lowercase. No go. On the PC end, when I try to type in the //123.456.7.8/username it just says "The network path was not found."

Dear all...
What is it I am doing wrong? reading through the guide above makes it all look terribly easy, and therefor I feel extra stupid not being able to ge this working.... this is the setup:
1 Powerbook G4, OSX 10.3.8
connects through airport network..
airport connects (ethernet) to Thomson Speedtouch adsl router...-->internet
1 WinXP prof sp2
connects through LAN to the same adsl router for internet...
My logic tells met these computers are physicly networked...Both being connected to the same router should give me networking, or not?
How do I get these babies talk?!
I followed the procedure above, but there is no communication whatsoever
If I try to connect MAC->WIN...:The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "smb//10.2.2.0/workgroup" could not be written (errorcode -36)
I am confused....help would be very much appreciated

Can you ping one machine from another?
For Mac open the Terminal (Applications > Utilities) and type ping 192.168.1.2 (but with the IP address of your PC)
For PC open Command Prompt (Start > Run> "cmd {return}") and type the same, but with your Macs IP address.

If I try to connect MAC->WIN...:The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "smb//10.2.2.0/workgroup" could not be written (errorcode -36)
Hold on, you shouldn't be trying to connect to smb://ipaddress/workgroup. You should be connecting to smb://ipaddress/shareName.

Thanx for this quick reply..
well I tried to ping, but pinging gives negative results...all data is being lost
Also the smb://ipaddress/pcshare... does not reply...(sorry about that)
pinging to default gateway address (don't really understand) works fine
Could the firewall that is built in the modem/router have something to do with it?

I'd like a little advice. My Windows box sees my Mac just fine, and connects to it without issue. However, I am unable to connect to Windows from my Mac. My Windows machine doesn't show up in Network, but if I choose "Connect to Server" and type "smb://" (without the "quotes") followed by the short name of my Windows PC, I get a login prompt. When I try to log in, I can't because "the user name or password was incorrect". My Windows account has no password, and the short name isn't at all similar to the long name. Am I using the wrong name (I tried the short name, which didn't work)?

As I said in the guide (;)), your windows account MUST have a password, or how is it supposed to authenticate - it can't.

Hey, i found this forum just by luck, so i signed up
but anyways, i have a PC running windows 2000 and an eMac running Panther 10.3.8, all connected to my wireless linksys router (by cables, wireless for random laptops). This router is then in turn connected to my modem, obvsiously then to the internet. The first problem i seem to be having, is that the two computers can "see" each other, but my windows computer tells me that "\\OSX was not found, the network path was not found" and then when i attempt to open the PC from the Go > Network box, Finder stops and i'm stuck behind what my dad calls the "coloured pinwheel of doom", and i have to restart finder because it just becomes non-responsive. This is really bugging me, because i need to do several backups to DVD and the eMac is the only one with a SuperDrive! . Hope someone can help me out!
Another small prob i seem to be having, is playing games over the network/on the internet. The eMac connects with the game (Battlefield 1942) fine, and we play online all the time. Recently i acquired battlefield for PC, and it refuses to connect over the Internet, nor will it access the Local network (this was back when the network was accessible, why it stopped working i have no idea). I've tried to forward the ports on the Router (Linksys WRT54G), even on the Modem (Netcomm NB1300 +4), but it does nothing. Trend Micro firewall is off, as is any trace of windows port blocking, but it does nothing! this is become quite annoying, so i'm hoping that someone can give me a pointer in the correct direction!

On your Windows machine, go into the Printers folder, then share the printer(s) like you normally would (the method varies, depending on which version of Windows you have).
One way that's generally common to all Windows versions:
Right-click the printer, choose Properties, click the Sharing tab, set the sharing settings. Repeat for other printers you want shared.

I have not had any success using a wireless router as a hub to connect computers. As you have discovered, the router might not let non-Web traffic through (to be technical, non-TCP/IP traffic), including SMB (Windows-to-Windows sharing, Windows-to-Mac/Mac-to-Windows sharing) and whatever protocol Battlefield 1942 uses. I connect all the computers to a hub, which is connected to a router, which is connected to the modem and the Internet. Computers connecting wirelessly connect to a wireless access point connected to the previously mentioned hub. I have had no problems with internal network traffic using this approach; I have not tested internet gaming (such as Battlefield 1942).
I just thought I'd share my setup - I'm not sure if I can help with your specific problems.

Apr 17, 2005, 08:10 AM
Did you try making a direct connection between the two computers (i.e. with an ethernet cable directly between the two?). It might be, as the poster above notes, that your router won't act as a hub. For an immediate solution and to be able to burn those DVDs try a direct connection. Long term, a hub might be your answer.

...are the aliases to computers that show up in the Finder's Network folder refreshable? I can connect to my various PCs at home and at work without trouble using the Connect To Server method, but I'd always had problems browsing the network using the Finder under Jaguar and Panther. When I installed Tiger last week I was presently pleased to that network browsing was much better and that I could navigate to my desire PC, view a list of the available shares, and logon to the selected share. Great. The problem is now is that the aliases now seem to be out-of-date and I get the message that "The alias <alias name> could not be opened because the original item could not be found" followed be a really "useful" opportunity to search for the original item on my local disk. I can only assume that the Network aliases are now out-of-date (I guess the Mac should be resolving computer names via DNS so that the IP address should be irrelevant) and that they need to be refreshed somehow so that they point to the correct IP addresses.
As noted earlier in the post, I can connect so this isn't really a problem (hell, the Connect to Server method is faster) but it has been bugging me. Any ideas?

Allow me to share my own stupidity in the hope it might help others when all else fails :)
I followed all instructions here -- and it was all set up right. Computers could ping. XP box happily looked at the Mini and could access the data. But no matter what I did... I couldn't get a login prompt. I just kept getting an error -36, could not read or write.
Finally, I figured it out: File and Print sharing was disabled on my network connection on the XP box. (Right-click on the network connection in the task bar, view the status. Select properties to see what services are installed.)
It's always the little things.... Everything else was set up properly, and I'd even done the home network setup wizard on it. I just got too hung up on the differences between OS X and XP, and my being a complete OS X newbie.

Ok, I can understand most of what you have put in, but my query slightly changes direction.
I have a Linux Suse Pro 9 box, as a filesharing server and we have an Aramiska Arc as our Internet Router, with an IP address as 192.168.1.1
I have managed to get the MAC to see the router and get on the internet, but I cannot seem to MAP it simply to a drive on the Linux box.
I have WIN XP SP2 mapped to as an R drive (on the Linux box) to \\192.168.1.50\PUBLIC we then enter a username and password.
How do I map my MAC OS X box to this.

Hi, in the excellent guide it states:
"Information you will need to know
• The IP Address of your PC (Start > Run > CMD {return} > “ipconfig” {return})
• The IP Address of your Mac (Applications > Utilities > Terminal {Run app} > for ethernet connection “ipconfig getifaddr en0” {return} or for wireless "ipconfig getifaddr en1" {return})".
Does this mean that I can't network my Mac with my 2PCs (one is linked to the Mac by ethernet, one yet to be linked by wireless), at the same time?
Thanks

This is the question I was going to ask. The "Connect to server" method has worked flawlessly for me. But what about taking advantage of the SMB network browsing that was supposed to work in Panther and didn't. It's also supposed to work even better with Tiger but it doesn't. Shouldn't we be able to browse the network and see everything? If you go to network there are no icons for shared folders or computers. The only thing I see is a server folder sort of and then inside of that is a .local of my Mac. I can see no windows pcs anywhere.

Has any one been able to connect to a PC running XP Professional from a Mac running 10.4.1? ‘cause I’m about ready to throw my powerbook out the window.
Depending on what I fiddle with I either get an error -36 before the password prompt. Or I get the password prompt and then I enter my windows username and password and get an error that they are not correct. Which I know they are, because I try it several times to make sure I’m not making any typo’s and I can log into my PC just fine.
Or an even more bizarre error, the login prompt will not popup but it will tell me that the user name and password are incorrect without even entering them. In other words I enter smb://ipaddress/sharefolder and I get an error that the username and password are incorrect. I found this:

gotta scroll half way down. And this:

I tried this fix from apple, but the terminal would come back and say that the file did not exist and could not be saved. (at step 8)

Hi all, first post.
An excellent thread idea, thank you OP. Worked perfectly at getting my Win XP Pro box to see my mac mini, but getting the mini to see the XP computer was a bit more difficult.
At first I kept getting that annoying -36 error like bpdp and some others. I tried a ton of things to fix it, and here's what finally worked:
1. Go to "Network Connections" (start, control panel, etc to get there).
2. Find your network connection (the one that's lit up with blue screens)
3. Right click it, select properties
4. Make sure the "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" box is checked!
A lot of security sites instruct users to turn this off, in my case I wasn't networking this current PC so I'd turned it off a long time ago.
Well that got me to connect and get to the login screen, but I still couldn't log in! I got a -43 error, or sometimes a bad password error (user/password were always correct, and I do have passwords on my account names).
Well one important thing to note here that wasn't clear in the OP is that on your "Computer Name" screen the one to use is the "Full computer name" (without the period at the end) and NOT the "Computer description".
Even so I simply couldn't get it to work for me, but I instead went to network on the mac, and to my surprise found the domain and PC listed on it, and was able to login and connect from there!
Hope this helps!

I followed this guide and got it to work, then I put my computer to sleep because I had to go somewhere. When I came back and woke up my computer, something must have happened to my computer, because I started up Adium and it acted like I started it for the first time, asking for a screen name and all. iChat did the same. Just about every other application did the same too. In Safari ALL my bookmarks were erased!  In iTunes, I thought all my library was gone, but I found it still in the Music > iTunes Library - Thank the Lord. All my Address Book contacts were erased. :( But all my files are still there like folders and stuff on my desktop. Dashboard is the same as before, nothing changed. What could possibly have done this? Certainly not a virus, right? Is there any way I can get this information back like I did with the iTunes Library, maybe hidden somewhere?
The only positive thing is that my computer seems to be going a lot faster - system and internet wise. :(

i am being driven mad by xp sp2 trying to get my pc and g4 powermac (with 10.3.5) talking to each other again.
i somehow managed to have them communicating happily (connected directly by a cross-over cable) for many many months until the pc recently started misbehaving, became inaccessible and finally needed total reinstallation. Bottom line is that what ever configuration i had that got the network running is now lost and i am back at square one.
I have norton personal firewall on and i think it is the firewall that is preventing the stuff that the guide told me to from working. I cant ping between the two machines. on the "home networking" tab of Personal Firewall i put the ip address i got from my mac and its subnet mask into the "trusted zone". File and printer sharing are enabled in xp. The windows firewall is disabled, and i'd prefer to keep the norton one active.
ive looked at this guide and also http://bellsouthpwp2.net/j/o/joelshoemaker/computer/mac/wxpfs.html and neither instructions seem to work this time.
someone please help me before i bring a hammer to the pc!

Have you tried to repair permissions? It seems like most apps are not able to access their preferences. Repairing the permissions would fix the "Preferences" folder in your Library.
Edit: In case you dont know, its easy to do: Open Applications/Utilities and then choose Disk Utility. Select your system harddisk and click repair permissions.
If there are quite some things being listed, the chance is good that it has been fixed :-)

I can't seem to get my PC to be able to access files on my Mac (but I can get my Mac to access files on my PC). On my Pc, i will run:
\\ip address\shortname in osx
and when it prompts me for my username and password, it always fails. then, it also changes from:
username:
password:
to
username: DAD\
password:
anyone help me please? i'd love to get this to work.

I suggest you check out the free software "Share Points" for Mac OS X. Its a preferences pane which you can set up to share folders to Windows computers too. And, make sure you are in the right "Workgroup", I think this has been discussed before here.
Share Points works flawlessly for me, and all Windows users in my network were able to access my shared files! :)

i am pretty sure the problem is with xp sp2. To recap, i had a cross-over cable connected from the back of this pc to my g4 powermac - no routers, enabled sharing on both and it worked fine. Then SP2 was installed on this now the 2 machines cant talk to each other, neither can the mac use the internet like it could before.
i found a bunch of threads that describe the problem with a few solutions, none of which have worked for me.

Does anyone know how to network a PC and Mac over firewire. The Apple Devlopler connection says that it is possible, that IP over firewire is enabled. Any help would be appreciated as it would be a much faster transfer.

first and fore most remember you have to be in the same work group, yes apple has a program that allows you to switch work groups. search google for how to change the mac workgroup to match your windows workgroup. turn off all firewalls. I have tried lots of them and I couldn't connect with not a one to my mac. don't create a share on your pc in "my documents" create on the c: drive itself. then share that folder completely and let users able to change it.
go to networks under my computer on apple give it a few minutes to update or restart both machines. both should work if u have switch. now if it a password window pops up with a password put your windows one in. and it will mount to your desktop

I have followed the guide (which is excellent) My PC can access my Mac's folders but when i click finder, connect to server and log in (i have tried my windows log in and my macos login) it says:
The operation cannot be completed because of one or more required items cannot be found (error code -43)
Does anyone know what this means?

No problem :)
Better yet just map a newtwork drive (just like you would a normal windows share) and set it to reconnect on login ;)
Is there a way to map a drive FROM Mac (Tiger OS X) to a windows PC?

IN the windows folder that you are sharing, right click it and select Sharing and Securty. Most people just open i via properties but don't.
On the bottom of the tab, there may be a button called "NEW SHARE" if there is, then give the Mac user rights to the folder.
Re-connect via the SMB:// thingy
It worked for me. Now I want to be able to map it so that I don't have to do it everytime I start the Mac.

I had spent today hours on the end looking for something like you explained....

I wanted to ask if you know how to specifically add a Mac to a Domain Controller that uses Active Directory. Do you think you can post a HowTo or a Tutorial on how to add a MAc to a Domain in Windows 2003 Server or Windows 2003 SBS?
I'll really appreciate whatever help you can post;
Thanks!!

I experimented quite a bit with different variables after getting it to work. As long as you know the path name to your mac, as stated at the bottom of the sharing preferences window when 'windows sharing' is highlighted, you can connect to your mac from your pc from the "Run..." function on your pc. Even if you do not specify the same workgroup on your mac, as long as you connect to the mac at least once using the "Run..." function on your pc, your mac will then always appear in your network neighborhood. It won't appear in the same workgroup unless you match the workgroup name on your mac, but it will appear if you select "Show Entire Network" on the pc, and then click the icon for "Microsoft Windows Network". Sometimes it takes a while to appear.

This seems like a good thread to post my question...
I've previously managed to get my Mac on various networks for internet use at different places I've worked at, but recently run into problems at my latest posting.
The network is a Windows network with Novell.
I've copied over the IP config data to the Mac and The network status part of System Preferences shows a green dot and that I am connected to the internet. However, when loading a page in Safari it cannot get through to any pages.
I should also mention that when using the internet from the work PCs, a little pop-up appears with "Internet Gateway Authentication" and an address like "chhfd.hfjkd.co.uk" asking for a username and password (which I obviously have!)
Has anybody got any ideas on how I can get my mac to wokr on this network - I only want internet, but it would make my life so much better as my mac has no way of connecting to anything (I am in the middle of nowhere!!!)
I am here for 3 months, so I would be very happy!!! :)

You don't have 'Block pop-ups' enabled do you? Might be a simple problem like that....

On the PC...
- Open IE
- Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings
- Take a note of the proxy details which I *think* you will find
On the Mac (assuming using Safari)...
- System Preferences > Network
- Select your live NIC and "Configure"
- Select Proxies
- Select "Web Proxy (HTTP)", and enter the proxy server name and port, chances are it will be the same proxy for FTP, HTTPS etc as well.
- Apply, and hopefully you're online!

Thanks very much for your post (and you Gee) - proxies sound like the key - only problem is when I go into "Internet Options" There is no Connections tab. Perhaps this was removed by the network admin to prevent this sort of thing?
I went to http://library.usask.ca/connectfromhome.html which came up with a suggestion for the proxy I was accessing from (e.g. 1.0 abcdsquid.abcd.co.nz:8080 (squid/2.5.STABLE3)) I took away the 1.0 and the bracketed bit at the end and put the rest into Network Porxies settings on the Mac, but this just got Safari to ask me if I would allow it to access the keychain and then cam up with the message that Safari couldn't connect to the website because it couldn't find the server etc.
I don't suppose anyonbe knows any other way that I could get the PC to cough up its Proxy details. As usual the PC help files are predictably useless.
Once again, I would be soooo happy to get this sorted! :)

Go to Start > Run > "regedit" {enter}.
Navigate to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" and see if there is a key called "ProxyServer". That should tell you what your proxy is.

You are a God. I am now writing this on my Mac and I couldn't be happier. Turns out the proxy address I got from that site I linked was correct, but I had made a tiny typo. Now it's all good.
However mail seems to be having issues using the proxy... if you know how that could be fixed!

Hi
I've been on the computer for hours trying to sort out our Mac & PC network. Just realised that we've got a software firewall on our PC (in addition to the WinXP one). Turned it off, and away we go!
I'm now okay to view the PC from the Mac and the Mac from the PC.
However, we're limited to sharing the home folder on the Mac. We have 2 hard drives on the Mac and would like to be able to view the second one from the PC too - any ideas how to do this?
Thanks for the brilliant guide.

When I go to Connect to Server and put in smb://ip/pc(name of shared folder) i get an invalid password/user right off the bat, I'm never prompted to put them in... I have 3 users on the PC and only one has a password, but I wouldn't think that would be a problem.. I tried ping-ing the PC and I got info back..

At my office, my Windows PC will appear in the Network icon in the Finder, in the workgroup I specified with Directory Access. My Mac likewise appears under the Microsoft Windows Network, under the same workgroup.
At home, on my Airport network, I have to manually connect them to each other, via the methods stated above. They are on the same subnet, off the same Airport router...so why can't they "see" each other automatically?
Also...how to I share an external FireWire volume with a PC user? I can't find anything under Sharing.

This guide you have here looks good.. but I'm wondering if you could help me out - we have a finiky network system. Our wireless adsl/router acts as a DHCP server and allocates all the other network devices an ip address every so often. Because of this, our file server has a dynamic ip address. With the above instructions, how would I be able to get around this?
At the moment, my apple will authenticate on the network, and i can access the internet, I can see the network in finder, and i can open the server, at which point it asks for my username and password, then it says that i cannot open the alias because the item could not be found. Our server is win 2003. Any ideas on what we could do? or.. should i forget about it all together... ?

First off, a server should never have a dynamic address, give it a static IP address (just take the details of it's current dynamic address, and input them as a static one).

I'm trying to set this thing up so that my main computer (the mini w/ Tiger) is connected to my old computer (windows XP SP2) via ethernet so that I can share files (and possibly internet, though it's not entirely necessary). I have internet running into my mini through the airport, and I'm thinking the Mac and PC are having problems communicating because of an issue with IP addresses, but I've hit a wall and read everything I can online.
I can't even ping between the two computers. Every article I've seen online begins with something akin to, "Make sure the two computers can see each other. Good? Great, let's move on..." And I'm sitting back here going, "Nooo! That's the hardest part!"
It appears like my PC is at least being assigned an IP address by the DHCP because the wireless router's IP address is 192.168.2.1, the Mini's airport IP is 192.168.2.3, the Mini's ethernet IP is 169.254.84.17 (completely different from the others, strange...), and the Windows' IP is 192.168.2.5
Can anyone figure out why this won't work. Is this not possible under my setup? Let me know if I need to post any more info. Thanks!

Just writing to mention that there is a *potential* bug that causes some headaches in OSX 10.4.2.
In System Preferences -> Sharing -> Windows Sharing, you now have to "Click Accounts to choose which accounts can use Windows Sharing." When you click on this, a list of accounts on your Mac will appear, and you select the ones you want to enable, then type in the password to authenticate the account.
The bug occurs when you type in your Account password and authentication fails ("Incorrect password") -- which isn't correct because your Account password *should* work in this instance. To fix this, go into your account settings (System Preferences -> Accounts -> My Account), and force a change of password for your account. This will enable you to authenticate yourself for Windows Sharing.
Just mentioning for everyone's benefits. Caused a lot of frustration here trying to figure out why I couldn't authenticate myself!

Hi. I'm a 15-year PC user, 1-month Mac user, and already don't want to go back. Unfortunately, my whole life and business is on the PC, so I need to sort this out. edesignuk, thanks for the excellent tutorial, but my results are all over the place. (And shoemkr's tutorials are great, too, I tried his method, and couldn't resolve this. I tried to use his forums, but they're too busy.)
First up, what I've got:
- one Mac G5 running OSX 10.4
- one PC running XP
- one ADSL modem/ethernet router
I followed the instructions, and here's what I can do:
- ping both directions
- Mac can see XP share folder and pull files
Here's what I can't do:
- Mac can't drop files INTO the XP folder
- Mac can't use printer attached to XP
- XP can't log into Mac, and therefore can't share
Now here's the thing. When I log from XP into \\computername\shortname, I get the login prompt. I type in the username/password. I hit enter. It asks for the username/password again. Am I using the wrong username/password to access the Mac? (I've tried approximately 176,781 times.) It's the same one I'd log on with, right? The one I keep getting asked to enter when I load new software, right? I don't have any other user accounts on the Mac, so I have no idea what other username/password I could possibly try. Any ideas?
So, what I need to know is:
- What could I be doing wrong with this username/password thing?
- Why can't I move files from the Mac INTO the shared XP folder?
- Any idea why the Mac won't see the printer (or, if that's better asked elsewhere, can you point me to the correct forum)?
Thanks heaps for any help you can offer this, um, newbie. (Gawd, I haven't been a newbie in 15 years!)
Oh, and for the record, I used to be one of those PC users that snickered at the fanatical passion of Mac owners. Now I just snicker at myself. But I understand the knowing smile.

With regard to writing files to the XP share, make sure you have this box ticked off:

The name and password you use to authenticate to your Mac from your PC should be your short OS X username and accompanying password.
While you're trying to get this working, turn all firewalls off on both systems.

Thanks. So obvious in retrospect! But...

I've got ZoneAlarm on the PC, but have turned it off as suggested. And in the Sharing section on the Mac, under Firewall, it says Firewall Off. Still no luck.

Maybe I'm not clear on the "short OSX username and accompanying password" thing. (That's the only thing I can think of.) Where exactly do I look to confirm what those are?
Got the Mac reading and writing to the PC, though. That's a good start.

OZXNot sure actually. What you can do is this. Connect to your PC from your Mac to get the share mounted. Then go to the Login Items section of your account settings in System Prefs, and drag the mounted drive from your desktop in to the list of items, this should make the share get mounted when you login to the computer.
Okay, I figured out what it was.
On the Sharing folder, you have to make sure that the account is shared. Simple, but not always so obvious to MacNewbies:
Click on "Accounts..." and tick the box of whichever account you want to allow in to the Mac:
http://www.writingfast.com/favor_for_ozx/mac_sharing.jpg
Thanks for the help!
But did you have any ideas on creating a desktop shortcut on the Mac to the PC? Can't figure that one out.

I've done that, but there was no shortcut on the desktop, and when I went back into Login Items, it read as "Unknown".
I'm happy to have to log in each time, but just wondering if there's a way to put something on the desktop that I can double-click to get to the PC. I really prefer double-clicking a desktop icon to Finder > Go > Connect to Server > [click on Favorite Server] > Connect.
Let me know if you can think of anything. Cheers.

OZXWell spotted that man! I remember doing that now when I upgraded to Tiger, but it completely slipped my mind that it might be an idea to update this guide....I'll get right on it :o ;)

Hi there... sorry to sound like a broken record. I see so many others being able to do what I can't... :(
How do you get to the PC from the MAC? I cannot, and I can't figure out it out.
Is there anybody out there that has had the same problem?
I CAN:
- ping both ways
- access the MAC (10.4) from PC (XP)
I CAN'T:
- connect to server (MAC to PC)
Am I missing something? I followed the instructions form the thread... a couple times. Thanks to everyone and all the great info, it really is well done, only I have "one of those cases".
I even disabled my internet security when trying to connect to PC and I still get the "cannot connect to server because the password is incorrect", but I use the correct WORKGROUP name, my XP user account name, and pswd (i'm sure).
Is there something I need to set on the XP?
Do I use computername\useraccount when trying to connect?
Do I use SMB//10.0.0.1/Temp or just SMB//10.0.0.1 ?
-i'm at the point of clicking the same buttons again and again in case it works this time.
=) cheers and hope to hear from someone soon.

This is my first post to this forum so please forgive me for any ramblings or errors with my typing. I have been a MAC user for since 1984 and been a believer since the beginning. I just upgraded to OS 10.4.2 within the last 2 weeks and have not have too many issues. I do have one particular that I can't to get resolved. Since the upgrade, I have some folders on a Win2003 server that are not accessible. There are some folders in the same shared volume that accessible and some are not. The volumes that are not accessible were available prior to me upgrading to OS 10.4.2. These same folders are also accessible in Windows based computers. I have checked the properties of those folders that I can not access with those that I can access, and there appear to be no differences. Again, these folders were accessible prior to me performing the upgrade. Any thoughts and assistance would be appreciated.

Geez, this thread is excellent... However, before I even attempt any of the above, I need some advice.....
Here's the situation:
We have a LAN with six OS 9.2 macs, 2 brand new G5s (tiger 10.4.2), an XP workstation, an XP machine running specific printer software, a UNIX running specific software, and a couple of really old OS 8 Macs..
I am the dedicated Mac person, and my co-worker is the dedicated PC person, and between us, we have been able to set up, and have our network running well... until last night when I set up the G5's with Tiger.....
What we really need to have happen is Both G5's need to talk to G4's with OS 9.2, and these same G4's need to talk to the XP set-up with this special printing software. The other XP is a workstation and needs to talk to all computers also. Basically, we need full networking between, Tiger, OS9, and Windows XP.
We have been doing this effectively with 'PC-MacLan' running on the XP boxes, but as I found out last night, when I 'have' to check the "Enable file sharing clients to connect over TCP/IP" on the OS9-G4's so Tiger will see them, all of a sudden, the connectivity between OS9 and the XP's is really really sloooow. So slow in fact it hangs the OS9 machine after a while. If I uncheck the TCP/IP on OS9, the transfer time to the XP's is back to normal...
We cannot (unfortunately) change any other hardware or software, ie. upgrade to OSX on all machines.. We need to intergrate these 2 new G5's into the current network without it throwing a wobbly on us.
I was hoping it would work really well, but I've been stopped in my tracks. Mind you, both my co-worker nor myself are wizards by any stretch of the imagination. We are mere operators who are self taught, and (somehow) manage to stumble to a solution for our employer... We have no IT dept., and it is assumed that 'we' are out IT dept...
I am hoping someone reading this will know exactly what we need to do.
Do we eliminate PC-MacLan from the XP's?,
Do we.... umm, I don't know....
Please help a man near the ennd of his teather....
Cheers and thanks in advance.

So is there anyone out there who can help. What does it take to connect to the PC (XP). Does xp have some silly thing that prevent 10.4 from connecting to the shared files...
Can you do this?
Connect to servere GO>connect...
enter IP address of PC on network (airport)
- smb://10.0.1.3/
type on
WORKGROUP = workgroup (PC computer workgroup title)
NAME = user name on pc (Ryan)
Pswd = *******
but then I get the error dialog
"Cannot connect to serve because name or password is incorrect"
but it is correct!
what am I missing... I have set up the PC and mac as directed. I can ping wach computer seperatly. I can connect to mac from PC and push files.
I need to connect to pc from mac... but can not.
Any advice?
much appreciated!!

Connect to servere GO>connect...
enter IP address of PC on network (airport)
- smb://10.0.1.3/You don't seem to be specifying a share to connect to, which *could* cause a problem. The address should be smb://ipaddress/sharename. Also in the WORKGROUP field you should be putting the name of the PC, not its workgroup.

Thanks for finally explaining how the whole filesharing works with a windows computer.
Could you also explain how I can share files with someone how isn't on the same router but across the city? I would love to share files with her but I understand that the ip adress on the internet differs from the ipadress on your "netwerk" at home. Where can I find this different ipadress. And how do I connect to her apple and viseversa? She has a mac mini running 10.4.2 and I have an Ibook running 10.3.9.

I've wondered the same thing myself - I have two drives, and I have the main original drive, and then a 2nd 80gb drive the previous owner had installed where I keep the bulk of my mp3s, etc...but transferring them requires moving them to the other drive and then moving them over to the POS MSDOS machine.
Is there a way to share drives and or folders that are NOT in my Home folder. i.e. I have multiple hard drives on my machine from which I would like to share files with PCs on my network.
Many thanks!!!

I was wondering if there is a way to network a powerbook G4 on a wireless network with a machine running XP on a wired network? I've been able to connect them when they're both on the same wired network, but I don't know how (if it's possible) to access the pc on the wired network from the mac on a wireless network. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. I also heard about publishing my pc to the internet, and that if I did that then I could access it from the G4, but that it would be really risky (with regards to viruses or hackers). I don't know the validity of this argument, or how to go about implimenting the plan.

Great thread! I still have a problem, however. I have the XP (sp2) computer and OS X computer able to connect to each other. My problem is, when using the XP machine and trying to copy over files FROM the Mac TO the PC there are certain files that stop the copying process (Some of which were "ICON" which I deleted, and removed custom icons on folders in OS X as well). I can copy folders that do not have these files, but I need to backup GIGS of data and cannot copy any folders that contain certain files. The error is:
Cannot copy (filename)
filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.
I need to get these onto my XP to burn DVDs, how do I get windows to ignore files it doesnt understand to prevent stopping the copy process? I appreciate ANY insight you can give me, I've done searches and havent found a solution yet.

This is how I fixed my error -36 when trying to see my Windows XP machine from Mac OS X.
Turn on "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" on the Windows CURRENT NETWORK CONNECTION:
- Open your current network connection status window (from tray or control panel)
- Click Properties
- Check the File and Printer Sharing for the Windows box
See this page for screen shots (it's the third down):

Hi,
I want to mount via smb a windows 2003 server share. My sys admin does not want to turn off the digital signing for security reasons. Is there any other way, e.g. is there a patched mount_smbfs which does digitally signing.
For e.g. I found sourcecode at:http://galileo.gamepoint.com.au/pub/freebsd/cvs/src/sys/netsmb/smb_iod.c,v
which include the statement:
1.15
log
@Add support for SMB request signing, which prevents "man in the middle"
attacks and is required to connect to Windows 2003 servers in their
default configuration. This adds an extra field to the SMB header
containing the truncated 64-bit MD5 digest of a key (a function of the
user's password and the server's authentication challenge), an implicit
sequence number, and the message data itself. As signing each message
imposes a significant performance penalty, we only enable it if the
server will not let us connect without it; this should eventually become
an option to mount_smbfs.
I don't know whether compiling just this piece would work (I am not really a programmer).

Great guide but doesn't work for me.
Network is 2 Macs, 1 XP SP2
Can ping both ways
XP connects to Macs but Macs don't connect to XP
Macs connect to each other (duh)
XP shows in Finder
Connect attempt results in "...name or password not correct" OR "alias could not be opened..." depending upon method
Problem began with a recent XP update (not sure which one)
I have tried EVERY suggestion here, no joy
Any suggestions?

Hi, first post here in fact I registered just for that, I do hope this thread is still active:
As other people have said, I'm trying to connect my mac to my xp machine and I get the "Could not connect to the server because the name or password is incorect"
I've been trying to do this for 2 hours now, tried every way I could find to map my drive. Here are the error message I get in the terminal:
mount_smbfs //OFANITE@192.168.2.10/DATA /Volumes/Test
Password:
mount_smbfs: session setup phase failed: syserr = Permission denied
smbclient //192.168.2.10/DATA -Uofanite
Password:
session setup failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_TYPE_NOT_GRANTED
I tried different ways to connect, including workgroups, including passwords but I always get those errors.
I have both computers on same workgroup, I tried having an account with the same name and with different names, having similar and different passwords. Both firewalls are disabled, I ping fine, I can even ftp between the 2 machines both ways.
I tried that a couple of months ago when I first gor my mac and I had the same issues, the xp machine and the mac have been formated a couple of times since.
oh and I did check the RequireSecuritySignature reg key to make sure it was at 0.
I'm using OSX 10.3.9 on a mac mini
and Windows XP sp 1 on an athlon 2800
Thanks ... any help will be much appreciated.

Sorry I cant help with the previously posted issue, but I have ANOTHER one:
Whenever I am connected with my second PCI-Ethernet card to the internet, the "Network" drive in the Finder window loses its ability to display ANY connected computers, neither Windows nor Mac OS... if the connection to the internet is off (a DSL connection over PPPoE) the network browsing feature is working again.
ITS ANNOYING. What could that be??

Howdy,
I am in the same boat as "digitalskillz".
I can ping both ways between 10.4.3 (powerbook, wireless) to my XPSP2 (wired (I had it wireless too, but then removed the card and went Cat5 after trying everything once or twice)). I have tried the Mac wired as well... no luck.
I have given both machines a static IP.
I can log into the Mac from the PC without issue. I just can't connect from the Mac to the PC. I have made sure they are in the same workgroup. I have passwords on the accounts...
I have tried it with and without firewalls.
I followed all the information on the guide... all the changes to windows and the Mac mentioned in the guide...
I even tried the changes for 2003... without luck.
I am stumped.
Ideas?
Thanks.

Can someone tell me the way to set up the computer-to-compuer (peer-to-peer) network between two portable computers (one PC and the other Mac)? This is not about setting up a network via wireless hub.
I have a company PC which is connected to work network at office and which also has Marlin Card/Spint PSC for internet connection while on the road. I would like to know if there is a way to connect my iBook or PBs to my company notebook PC by setting up computer-to-computer network. I looked around the forums but I could not find this particular networking question.

No luck yet Allrod... I have tried a couple different things with help from the thread leader but still haven't been able to hit my XP from the mac. I have given up for the time being since I can "push" to the mac from windows explorer using the mac IP address from Start>Run. But it would be nice to not have to do that all the time.

Dear Group,
I have been working on this problem for hours and am dizzy from reading and trying instructions found on several sites before I found this group. I feel I am inches away from success, but not there, and that doesn't count!
I have an iMac G4 flat Panel running OS10.2.8 and a Linksys wireless router, a Canon iP6000D printer and my husband has a Dell inspiron, running Windows xp.
It seems I need the simplest instructions possible. I had trouble locating some of the information requested, like computer names, network names etc. I would be ever so grateful for help to allow my husband to wirelessly connect to use my printer. It seems like that should be possible, I am just missing something. I got close enough to see my computer on his desktop, but all the file folders were empty and there was nothing about the printer.
Please help! I hate starting the new year with a failure! ;)

so, via this thread I can now connect to a WINXP machine and folders that were created to be shared, even $ folders.
But, I have some NAS connected, and the drives are listed as to be shared. they show up in the list of things the imac will connect to, but when I try to connect I get a LOGIN (there shouldn't be a login) and then a cannot connect dialogue and request for the alias, or delete or repair the alias.
what is this alias and is there a differant protocol for connecting to remote DRIVES?

Ok, I've read every post in this thread and AFAIK followed all instructions with care and precision.
I cannot, however, get my mac and pc to share files and I'm beginning to suspect some kind of cosmic joke is being played that no matter what I do the result is always the same; error -43.
I'm not laughing much though.
Both computers are aware of the other and I can follow the login procedure without issue but the once I have, for example, the pc shared folder on the mac desktop and I try and do anything, I'm told that the server has disconnected.
When I try it the other way I eventually get a not responding message.
OS X 10.3.9
Windows XP Pro SP2
I've read Apple's guide to resolving the -43 issue but it's of no help whatsoever as none of the suggested causes seem to have much relevance.
Anybody else experienced this kind of madness?
I'm starting to think that it just isn't meant to be.
Thanks,
Yan

I have an external FW drive connected to my Mac Mini which is shared on the network.
On my XP laptop, i can browse the network, see the Mini, navigate to the External FW drive, and navigate elsewhere just fine.
However, the file transfers are incredibly slow. A 200k picture transfers in a jiffy, but anything over 1-2mb can take minutes. A 6mb mp3 just took nearly 10 minutes to transfer from the PC -> Apple.
Any ideas?

It is important that the account you log in with on your XP system has a password set, if it does not you will not be able to login to your Windows share from OS X.
I don't have any password set for my XP user account and I can connect and share pc>mac and mac>pc just fine. How come I can do this? 10.4.5
You need to put your Mac in the same workgroup as your Windows PC.
I also found that I could connect to my windows share from my mac without being in the same workgroup as the PC. I couldn't connect pc>mac though.

1. Most users don't set a default local password on their main account. If you do so (as per this guide) you'll have to login every time you start your machine. For home users, a bit annoying.
.
Using Tiger and XP Pro, I can mount a Windows share just fine and I don't have any password set for my XP user account.
When Tiger asks for my authentication for the share, leaving the password field blank and clicking OK gets me in just fine.
Did this work differently in Panther?

Hey, thanks for all the above...I have been trying to get an OS X 10.2.8 iBook to hook up with a WinTel Dell running XP directly via crossover Ethernet for a week! Ahhhhhhh!
I am an ametuer who knows enough to get into trouble.
The laptop would file share with a different WinTel XP via their wireless network no problem. Arrrr!
After trying everything and following all of the above tips, I still couldn't even get the IBook and WinTel to PING each other over the cross-over Ethernet cable...
I finally realized that the Dell was set up so that it's IP address was assigend dynamically by the DSL ISP. I had thought that just unplugging it from the DSL modem would fix this.
I just figured out that in XP it is a setting either Automatic or Manual IP addressing, and when I unplugged the DSL modem the computer had no IP address at all. I went into Network Connections in XP, clicked on the LAN Local Area Connection, clicked Change This Connections Setting, went to the TCP/IP section, and manually assigned an IP address similar but different at the end of the IBook. Wallah! The share opened right up.
The computer that I could share with over wireless had a static IP address and cable internet, not DSL. Duh.
Maybe this is obvious to everyone else, but it made my day to find it, after trying EVERYTHING else. But thanks for al the tips.
