I really hope the new nano design is a fake. It looks like the small Zune. Apple can do WAY better than that. Apple, I love you, but seriously...

Why would a major manufacturer put an old iPod touch paper display (the icons) inside a case for the new iPod touch?

Well I would say that from the consistent form factors we are seeing for the new nano we might have a pretty good idea of what it looks like.
Before everyone starts screaming "FAKE" just remember that this same thing happened with the fatty nano last year. We saw all kinds of leaked pictures, case designs and everyone said "no way!", but then it was announced.
I'm not sure if I'll like it or not but I'm interested in seeing it in real life. The fatty nano wasn't so bad once you were able to hold it. These leaked items always make the products look kind of crappy.

Why would a major manufacturer put an old iPod touch paper display (the icons) inside a case for the new iPod touch?
Because they are a joke. I looked at one of their cases this weekend and couldn't believe how loose the case was on my iPhone. The girl was trying hard to sell me and I was like "uh uh, forget about it". I could have easily turned my iPhone around on itself inside the "case".

I don't get why there is an opening in the front for the iPod touch. Even if the wi-fi antenna is moved to the front of the unit, silicon/rubber isn't likely to block signals.

A lot of 'cheap' manufacturers do this.
A lot of 3G iPhone accessories have the 2G screenshots - minus the App store etc.

I actually really like the supposed new iPod Nano. I'd probably buy it, in fact.
But, it does seem like a step back.
I love the fatty Nano. I only wish it came in a 16GB size.
This is what interests me most. I want a 16GB Nano. The shape doesn't really bother me - although a 16GB Fatty and I'd be happy.

Hm, isn't this overkill for people who just want to use their iPod to play music, but don't want a teeny, screen-less shuffle? Or has a (non-existent) Apple focus group decided that 3rd generation Nanos are too small for average adult Western hands?
And this isn't just a Zune case, right? Or a keen manufacturer doing a "me first" based on speculation?
Oh, it's the iPhone nano ;).

I'm thinking camera is the only thing that would cause the need for a hole in the front of the Touch case. Otherwise I have no idea what else it is for. And just so you guys know - I'm not so fond of the "new" Nano design quite yet, but it will likely grow on me.

Gotta be a speaker, good call. If it were a camera, it'd be on the back so you can see the preview on the screen. Apple wouldn't put a front facing (ie: video chat) cam on the touch without putting it on the iPhone too, and they aren't putting out an iPhone update next month.
Not an accelerometer: that's all internal. Only the proximity sensor uses an external sensor and the touch has no need for one

I hate this Nano mock-up. Real or Fake. I loved the nano fatty as soon as I saw it, it just worked for me. Either way, I am not in the market for a nano so it does not impact me. On the other hand, I am buying a touch sometime in Sept so a new model is welcomed.
The case is probably for the iPhone 3G and some idiot cutout a piece of the case to make it look different. My understanding was the proximity senor works through rubber/silicone, but the ambient light sensor cannot be covered. This is my guess why there is only one hole on the left side of the speaker.
EDIT: Also, some are thinking that the light can get through the semi clear case, but this case probably comes in black, etc. Also, the Home button is way to high on the touch so it is an iPhone 3G case. Why do people waste time with things like this, atleast be creative.

I mentioned nothing about them getting unreleased iPods measurements.

... this is just a thought, but could it be that the so called $th Gen iPod Nano is not the new nano but the new "classic"? Since the introduction of the iPod, Apple has always either gone smaller or bigger capacity. So I actually think we are seeing pics/mock-ups of the new iPod Classic in it's slimmer form.
Just a thought.

There's no HDD that would fit in that form factor at the current time unless it was a SSD and there's NO way that the iPod classic line is going solid state yet. It's too expensive for the sizes they would want.

From a design perspective, the fatty always bugged me -- so much wasted empty space on either side of the click wheel. As soon as I saw it, I said, "Why didn't they turn the screen 90º and keep the narrow look that everyone loved with past nanos?" (You know, the best-selling iPods ever?) Also, I think psychologically the skinny nano is more appealing if you're going to wear the ipod jogging (ie. on an armband) -- even though in practice the fatty was light and thin enough to work, it just didn't look right aesthetically. I assume the goal here was a slightly bigger video-capable screen with a return to the old form factor.
As for the touch case, I'm baffled. I have a 16GB touch with a Griffin iClear case, and it doesn't need a cutout for the wifi or the ambient light sensor. If that case is real, it's terrible and needlessly makes the ipod vulnerable. I concur on the "no way it's a front-facing camera" sentiment.

You guys crack me up.
First off, Alibaba is not a retailer, it's a business-to-business marketplace. If you or I wanted to get into the iPod accessory business, and didn't want to do our own design, or commission one, such a site would be where we could find the goods from any number of small and medium-sized Chinese manufacturers to whose goods we could then either apply our own branding, or resell more cheaply as no-name items.
Secondly, one can't draw conclusions from illustrated sales photos with a cardboard insert, or minute details from a unlicensed design. There is a possibility that these cases do reflect the designs of a major accessory maker like Griffin who is probably privy to the new iPod designs, or they could just be no-name versions, or ripoffs of the same.
As with spy photos of new car models, one can take in the big picture to be indicative of what the future model may look like, but don't expect the details to survive.
It may spoil the fun, but don't take everything you see or read literally.

I hope either the nano or ipod touch will beable to link with itunes wirelessly to my computer.
to have your ipod in your car that is in the driveway ... and to have it sync to the computer at your house over your wifi network would be the greatest.
i know in the zune forums they are raggin on ipods for not being able to do that. have a buddy who has a jeep and a zune and all day long always updating. hops in the car and bam no need to plug the zune in to listen all the music is already there.

If those are the new nanos and they are ditching the dock for mini usb I am suspecting it cruising far down the product line. And why not? The nano used to be quite nice; an iPod with less capacity. Now it is a fairly limited device that seems simplistic next to the high end iPod Touch.
The price of the Shuffle is just insane. The Shuffle is something they would give away with Happy Meals™ in a logical world. The Nano at $99 for the smallest would be good to induct the kids into Apple products.

The hole is for the light sensor. Apple disguised it really well, but in the right light, you can see a little spot on the top left, right where these cases have a hole. I see nothing that indicates a new iPod Touch design, except the wifi cutout, but that looks like it is just a dumb design.

All I keep thinking is that this new Nano is ugly and awkward. IF the two different cases (and the mock-up photo) are real, it'll take a bit for me to understand Apple's thinking on this.
I would accept a small multi-touch based iPod.. that's moving forward. But this possible wide-screen, click-wheel Nano just doesn't sit right with me yet.

No! Its definitely not for a speaker. The iPod Touch is ULTIMATELY AN iPod and seeing that no iPod till date features a speaker.... neither will the touch! Besides... it'll just go on to add more size to the iPod and the 'impossibly thin' logo will be lost!

No! Its definitely not for a speaker. The iPod Touch is ULTIMATELY AN iPod and seeing that no iPod till date features a speaker.... neither will the touch! Besides... it'll just go on to add more size to the iPod and the 'impossibly thin' logo will be lost!
Yeah, sure. "The iPod is ULTIMATELY AN iPod and seeing that no iPod till date features a multi-touch screen... neither will the new iPods. Besides, it'll just make the iPod s much bigger!" (Last year, this day)
And then the touch came out. What happened to new features? What's wrong with speakers? Adding 1 or 2 mm isn't going to hurt. It's still going to be thin. The iPhone has a speaker but just a little thicker. Again, why can't it have a speaker? New features right?

There obviously is a reason apple went back to the old form-factor. The 'fatty' nano was a nice design but there's got to be some underlying technology to this new design; then again, the nano always gets radically re-designed with each generation. I'm still not sold on the curved front, but I'm sure in person it will look great - hopefully they don't drop the dock connector, though.

I don't want speakers. iPods are personal listening devices, they fill up your world with music, leaving others unannoyed.
Imagine all of the kids blaring music in the park, on the train or on the street like they already do with they're cell phones.
And if i want to share with someone, I do want to give them an earphone, it gives you a bond, a conversation starter.
It's like jobs once said about the Zune, you don't want to squirt a girl your music, you want to share your music experience by giving her an earphone, think about that, by sharing an earphone with someone, you've started a positive relationship.
Oh and by the way those "nano's" are on ebay under "generic mp3's" with the little strap thingy's
(Braces self for tl;dr's)

I saw a couple walking down an aisle in a store the other day doing just this on a cheap cell phone. Actually blaring the damn thing as loud as it could go with the woman holding it on her shoulder like a 1982 Boombox. I walked right past them within two feet and still could not make out the song, just tinny, shrilly garbage. The saddest thing is that they looked like they were enjoying it. The whole situation bothered me.
I really doubt there can be a acceptable sounding speaker come from such a small device anytime soon. It is a joke and I think that Apple can see this and would not subject any of their products to that treatment as of yet.
By the way, what happened to the iPod Hi-Fi? :D

Not according to Apple: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/01/22/apple_ipod_touch_is_now_a_mainstream_wi_fi_mobile_platform.html
With Apple now determined to attract developers to this new "general purpose" platform, I'd be surprised if there wasn't a speaker present.
Headphones-only audio prohibits many classes of application. Imagine if your PC or PDA or handheld game or radio or GPS device had no speaker.

Things look to be heading in the right direction for this uber fugly Nano to be real and on Apple shelves soon after to the back to school promo.
Clearly shows that Apple engineers are either on vacation, or are smoking crack and shooting up.

Definitely the ugliest thing ever. Uglier than the Zune in fact. I'd rather have a brown $h!t smelling Zune.

Not me. I am still looking for a working not too bad looking 1st gen Nano. The best looking of the bunch.

I think that this nano and the Zune both look fine. Definitely nicer than the hideous square nano. (also less usable, because of the awkwardly placed hold switch). It does, however, seem strange that Apple would go to a design that many other PMP makers have already done. Not to mention the fact that they are returning to the stick-styled nano.

In my opinion, the second gen nano was the best looking of the nanos. It was a sexy, silm version of the Mini.

front slit: physical play/pause button? or mute?
if it is a camera and or speaker, i will be sad. B/c i am sticking with my 32gb touch, and those were the two features i wanted when i bought it.

Ditto with the 2nd gen nano. Slimmer and less scratchable then the first gen. the first gen was nice, but the mini-design has to be one of the nicest.
and the zune flash and long-nano-rumor aren't ugly. they seem practical, unlike the fat nano right now. if they incorporate some type of accelerometer to go along with the click wheel (a la newer motorola phones switching from media to phone modes) it'd be fine, and preferably only for viewing videos. Digital skunk sounds like a cranky old man who can't accept that change can be good.

While a speaker in an iPod sounds like a good idea, as others have said, such a small speaker would sound terrible and make the iPod seem tacky. iPods are all about looking and feeling like quality products, and that is why I think Apple won't put a speaker in an iPod.
Speakers in mobile phones are absolutly awful. If iPods ever did get a speaker, I imagine it would be a very quiet one, and only for use with apps.

Nothing really new or surprising then. I have never really understood some things the mini/nano crew at Apple came up with:
Mini to 1st gen nano:
- They went from an all-around anodized aluminum case to plastic front and polished chrome back, prone to fingerprints and scratches
- They went from friendly vernal colors to black/white, no colors
- They moved the headphone jack from the top to the bottom (granted... this is because of the form factor)
2nd gen nano to 3rd gen nano:
- They went from small and slim to fat, ugly and ridiculed
- They went from anodized aluminum to the scratch-prone polished chrome AGAIN (cause it's cheaper, right?)
- They went from offering a pink one to not offering a pink one AGAIN. Common Apple! Anybody could have told you that this one's popular with the girls...

Obviously the touch is like that for the sensors, the big one on the right top corner is the other side for the wi-fi signal and the small is an ambient light sensor:apple:

I'm sorry but I don't get that. Is that opening on the front of that supposed ipod touch 2 case for wi-fi? If so then what is on the back? Do you think they would incorporate a 3G antenna for use with a data only plan? :)

It's possible that they're just going to make the entire back plastic or chrome (w/o the ugly black thing on the black corner).

does that hole in the top left mean a camera on the front side?
dum dum dum.
It's the ambient light sensor, it's on every iPod touch. If there wasn't a hole in the case then the auto-brightness feature wouldn't work. If you have an iPod touch nearby, hold it so there is light reflecting off the screen. You will clearly see a small circle in that exact spot; ambient light sensor, my friend.
Of course it has already been explained, I just felt like clearing it up more :p
