Bleh!

What would be better would be to use Splenda (sugar substitute) and go for the low carb coke. It would taste so much better than diet coke now.....

Lime....what were they thinking

Lime Coke would be perfect if you could remove the Coke and add a little Triplesec and Tequila...

Why does it have to be 'diet'? Diet drinks suck.

Mr. Anderson
Jan 15, 2004, 02:03 PM
That's why the industry should move to Splenda - its so much better than equal or the pink stuff. Shasta is actually using it in their diet sodas, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere locally.

I like lime soda but I can't imagine liking lime in cola as much as lemon or cherry.

I wouldn't be surprised if their food technologists come up with another 2 combinations this year. I know that coffee is the rage, but is Coca-Cola (or Pepsi-Cola) falling that far in the overall beverage market?

I happen to drink a lot of diet coke. I agree, it is an aquired taste, but now I prefer it. Regular coke now seems too heavy and sugary. I didn't much like lemon diet coke but I am excited for this one..

I drink a ton of diet soda (probably literally a ton, over a year). I much prefer diet Pepsi to diet Coke; All varieties of Diet Coke have a strong, super-sweet aftertaste, much like their original "Tab" diet soda had.

Have you or anyone you know experienced memory loss that's been connected to aspartame used in diet products?

I think it's because there are a lot of us who despise diet drinks because we get a metallic taste in our mouths from the aspartame. Adding a little bit of flavoring lessens it and makes the drink tolerable. I didn't drink diet anything until Diet Coke with Lemon. I don't know about lime, though. Maybe I'll have to add some rum...... ;-)

I tried the Vanilia Pepsi and didn't care for the taste. The lime or lemon doesn't sound interesting at all. I do like Cherry Coke though. It is a great alternative drink. I will admit that it is not as good as the original. Growing up I remember having fountain Coke with the cherry flavor added at the resturant.

Have you seen any Diet Rite or Diet RC products where you live? Those are my diet colas of choice as they also make use of Splenda brand sucralose.

We use Splenda all the time at my house... boxes and boxes of the stuff for diet stuff...

No massive bitter aftertaste...

Good stuff.

We're really not getting the full range over here in the UK.

Vanilla coke, love the stuff. Always liked Cream Soda when I was a kid but can't find it anywhere and it was too sweet last time I drank it, this is WAY better!

Cherry Coke rules when I can't buy vanilla.

Diet coke doesn't taste too nice to me, I don't like it. Even pepsi tastes better than diet coke to me, it's got this horrible synthetic sort of taste, absolutely minging.

How do I know I won't like diet coke with lemon or lime? could be great.

Going on a tangent here but does anyone find people who buy diet drinks absolutely hillarious sometimes?

Someone orders a 12" Deep Pan Pizza in some take-away, spends loads extra getting it all piled up with extra toppings and stuff, totally holding up the que 'cos you're starving and just want something simple off the menu and then you can get a taxi home. Then, while you're still there waiting, they get the sudden realisation that people might think they're greedy so they order a diet coke with it instead of a normal one as if it some how redeams them of their obvious greed on the pizza order.

Cracks me up when that sort of thing happens. :D

Perhaps the person enjoys the taste of diet drinks? A good 75% of the people I know drink diet drinks, whether they are dieting or not, and whether they need to be dieting or not. I enjoy pizza, and I usually order it with pretty much every topping on the menu.. but nothing would ruin dinner faster or more completely than drinking a sugar-filled soda. I find the taste cloying and nearly enough to invoke a gag reflex. But I don't deride people for ordering, and paying for, and enjoying their food... Guess I missed the recruitment poster for the Food Police.

Wait.... I can't remember....

I started to drink diet coke for a while. I probably drank 3 a day, then I got horrible headaches. (And I am not usually prone to headaches.) I stopped drinking them, tried to reduce stress.. they went away, but I think it was the caffeine or something in the diet cokes that were messing with my head...

I haven't seen any mention of Diet Vanilla Coke in this thread (or did I miss it?).

It's probably my favourite flavour here (ins Australia). The vanilla does an excellent job of hiding the disgusting Diet Coke/sweetener taste. Regular Vanilla is waaaaay to sweet and sugary.

I used to like Diet Dr Pepper too (but not as much as the real deal), but Dr Pepper didn't do too well here. I think it's almost extinct :(

Love the plain old Coke and could drink it all day long if it wasn't for such a heavy dose of sugar. I think they should sell Cokes at a colder temperature though, for me it only works when it's chilled down.

I like peeling off the label on the bottles and just staring at this strange not so healthy looking black liquid in a bottle sitting on my desk. Weird that the product is black but I associate it as red.

Pepsi-Max is my usual drink.....except when I start to get jumpy then I drink water.

My most uhealthy food combination is a large packet of chips washed down with copious amounts of coke, but you don't really eat the chips you just drink the coke while you have a mouthful of chips and it turns into a sugary salty fatty wonderful party. aghhhhhhhhhh *drool

ps Cherry Coke tastes like cough medicine.

I do prefer just plain Classic Coke to diet, lime, or lemon.

You should try fountain Cherry Coke, that is a very special taste. Maybe I like Cherry Coke, because I don't really mind cough syrup. It's better than coughing.

I Love Pepsi Max, but alas you can't buy it in the US, so when I go to Canada I usually bring back several 12-packs.

My Drinks of Choice:

1) Pepsi Max
2) Wild Cherry Pepsi (only in Cans or 20oz, the 1 liter mix is too much like plain Coke)
3) Pepsi
4) RC Cola
5) Pepsi Vanilla
6) Pepsi One
7) Root Beer
8) 7-up
9) Diet Pepsi
10) Dr. Pepper

With out Diet Pepsi, and its extra Caffene, I couldn't get throught Finals.
Most other drinks suck.... Sierra Mist, I'm lookin in your direction. I HATE COKE, but will drink it if that is all that is available.

You should try fountain Cherry Coke...

We only just got Cherry Coke here in Australia. I don't think it's on tap (is that what you mean by fountain?) here yet.

Anyway, it does taste bad - I don't think it's the same as the US version. Maybe because I've only tried the US one in cans and the Aussie in plastic bottles.

All this talk of Coke is making me thirsty... I'm off to 7-11 :D

One thing I noticed is that Pepsi goes flat LONG before Coke does. That goes for diet and regular.

I first noticed that with Big Gulps, then noticed the same thing with the bottles and cans.

That's why I don't bother with Pepsi anymore.

I don't think they use Corn Syrup in any product made in Australia. I have seen it in bottled form at the supermarket though (imported, of course :) )

Plain old Coke is the go. I agree about the sugar thing though. As I have become older I'm looking for drinks that taste not as sickly. Coke is the only cola that doesn't taste like cola. In fact it doesn't really have a taste ;) Probably all the chemicals in it to keep you addicted.

Pepsi-Max is crazy! There was a time I drank 2 litres a day for 2 weeks straight. By the end of those 2 weeks I was trippin', hearing sounds (doorknocks and other freaky stuff). I'm now reformed but still drink it every now and then. Phenylanaline yay!

Cherry Coke doesn't taste very similar to the American version at all, tastes too similar to plain Coke. Dr Pepper tasted more like cough medicine which coincidentally I really liked.

Lime Coke is a least worth a try...

i used to drink "regular" coke - still do occasionally - but switched mostly to diet.

in college, when i was swimming 20+ hours a week, i could afford the calories. but these days, little things count. a can of soda has 120+ calories - that's a 10 minute jog.

i try to cut back on soda drinking in general though. it's bad for the bones...

given a chance, i'll give lime diet coke a try. i didn't like lemon diet coke/pepsi at all.

OT: one of the reasons i love occasional trip back to japan is the variety in drinks over there. the current trend is amino acid infused water. good stuff - low calorie and quite tasty. :D

Right, here goes:

Coke - I can manage about 1 litre of this at a time.
Vanilla Coke - Good for a change, but I don't have it much.
Diet Coke - Can't stand it.
Diet Vanilla Coke - Worse than regular Vanilla Coke.
Diet Lemon Coke - Only had it once, can't really remember it that well.
Cherry Coke - It was disgusting. Nobody liked it. Discontinued in NZ years ago.
Dr Pepper - Never seen it in NZ.
Pepsi - It's OK.
Pepsi Max - As good as Coke in my opinion.
Lemon Pepsi - It's OK.
Diet Pepsi - Not sure that I've tried it.
L&P (available in NZ only) - My favourite :) (not a cola, but it's fizzy!).

I wrote Coca-Cola company via their webform:
Are there any plans for a "diet" drink that does not have aspartame in it? (possibly purely acesulfame potassium or a mixture of that and sucralose?)

I have a sensitivity to aspartame, which makes it difficult to find "diet" foods & drinks. We currently drink regular Coke products, and I have found a few sodas that do fit the description (Diet Rite) but would prefer something more easily found and purchasable in your convenient "fridgepacks" in cans.

They responded:

Thank you for contacting The Coca-Cola Company, Ms. Johnston.

Currently, all of our brands formulated with acesulfame potassium use it in combination with aspartame. In addition, the only products we produce that are sweetened with sucralose are our Flavor Rage syrups and SWERVE flavored milk beverages. Though we have no plans to change the world's favorite diet beverage, we always keep our options open and applaud the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's approval of new sweeteners for potential use in soft drinks. It's important that consumers have a variety of options.

We hope this information is helpful. Feel free to visit our Web site again.

The patents on aspartame ran out about a decade ago, but there are still active ones covering the manufacture of sucralose. The bigger syrup makers are probably saving a fair amount by sticking with the public domain sweetener until customers start screaming for the new stuff more.

We're constantly seeing free samples of the stuff at work (same parent company), but it's not much use to me, being one of those hated creatures who has to be careful to eat a bit extra so as not to lose weight.
