Apple released the new iPod Touch today at their media event. The new iPod Touch matches up with the rumors, now sporting a curved back but retaining the same storage capacities. Features include:
- 2.1 Firmware
- Built-in speaker, volume controls
- Genius playlist
- Nike+iPod support
- Battery: 36 hours for music, 6 hours for video.
- $229 for 8GB, $299 for 16GB, $399 for 32GB
Apple also appears to be positioning the iPod Touch as a gaming device with a new ad that shows off a number of games and calls it the "funnest iPod ever". Phil Schiller also demonstrated a number of games on stage, including Spore Origins, Real Soccer 2009 and Need for Speed: Undercover.
Spore Origins was released (http://www.macrumors.com/iphone/2008/09/08/spore-origins-now-available-for-iphone-and-ipod-touch/) for the iPhone and iPod Touch just yesterday, and a first look gameplay video (http://toucharcade.com/2008/09/09/first-look-video-of-real-soccer-2009/) of Real Soccer 2009 has been posted to TouchArcade.com (http://toucharcade.com).
The 2.1 upgrade will be available for free for current iPod Touch owners with Firmware 2.0.
The new iPod Touches should appear at http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/ later today.

The Nano was just as promised beforehand and the Touch is sexy but no GPS. I'm drooling over the built-in speaker though. Not to mention the Touch's insane battery life...
iPhone and Touch are making up Apple's portable game machine market. (LOL Pippen) I wonder what Nintendo is thinking.

Just ordered a 16GB.
I hoped for more, but expected this price and size as a minimal. Speaker is nice!

I never saw how the Touch could ever have dropped anywhere CLOSE to the iPhone's subsidized price, since AT&T pays $300 or more for your iPhone, on top of what you pay.
The speaker is nice--not for music so much (though my iPhone's speaker is acceptable for that in a pinch) but for other uses such as alarm clock, timer, headphone-free gaming and video (YouTube with friends), and email notification (which I assume can be auto-checked while you're in WiFi range).

Has anyone heard if the current generation Touches will receive the Genius Playlist?
I'm assuming so, because they certainly wouldn't leave the iPhone users out of this, so it's got to be nothing more than a software update.

I'm slightly disappointed. I had been hoping for at least another colour / plastic backing, and (although I knew this was unlikely) GPS. Nice to see it got a built in speaker.
I was going to get it, but now I'm not sure - Nanos are very tempting... or maybe both!

From an industry-leadership perspective, last year's model with memory bump consistent with today's memory prices would have been so much better.
Apple's primary goal is not to lead in innovation but rather milk profits. Spiritually, the obituary may have been timely.

With the iPod touch having a speaker, the device has accelerated into an ultimate gaming/ipod device. Expect many games to come out to revolutionize the way games are played on portable devices.

I think this was a reach to expect 64GB in this update as many people have said in the forums that flash memory hasn't dropped that much yet and also they would have to make the Touch bigger to accommodate two 32GB chips. Someone else can correct me if I'm wrong.
But maybe January/Spring is a more appropriate time to hope for this capacity update?

Of course - right after people have spent millions for the 32Gig for Xmas they'll release the 64Gig in January. Typical - yet smart tactic - of Apple gouging the consumer.

I agree. I mean all the improvements are fine, just not super-noteworthy.
I do like the Genius feature, I think it has a lot of potential especially as SkyNet gets smarter and smarter.
I think they could've introduced even more software innovations for the Touch. Skype would've been great (with the new headphones), Wifi podcast updating, maybe a NFL app similar to the MLB app...They could've demo'd all of those and skipped 1 or 2 of the games, and made the new Touch seem like a bigger deal.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of the Touch, but Apple needs to be held to a higher standard if they want all the limelight. Deliver to the consumer what they want. What Apple have done with the iPod Touch is to stand up and say we are now ready to compete as a gaming platform, and what's more we are changing the whole sales/delivery model by making the entry level slightly dearer than Nintendo DS and PSP but making the games a fraction of the price - so once you've bought the thing the games cost peanuts - there'll be no hesitation forking out £5.99 to download a title and £24.99 will now seem so over priced so as to be ridiculous. As a gaming device the Touch has all it needs and more, and is set to redefine the market. Maybe many will stand by Nintendo and rightly so, but Sony is going to lose a lot (more) of its gamers.

I wanted to wait until this event before finally replacing it but when I saw the rumors abuot its new "features" I said screw it and bought an iPhone. Glad I did. The Touch could be really great but now it's just a gimp iPhone and still costs more.

Volume control is nice but there's no pause control? That would be more important to me. I'm even more glad now that I got my free Touch in the summer promotion; I don't see anything here to get excited about.

iPod Touch 2g is 5 grams lighter than the 1g Touch, but is .5mm thicker.
Why do they keep saying they new iPhone and new Touch is thinner than last years? Tapered edges does not equal thinner in my book.
.5mm is nothing to get upset over though, i'm just arguing on technicalities.
Being lighter is more important to me than being thinner. People who carry items in their pockets such as myself always appreciate our everyday items getting lighter and more less noticeable in ones pocket.

So, is my DS better? Probably. I'm not such a fan of Renaissance device only because they can't focus on one aspect. Can't make a good portable media center and also have it be a good gaming device. Or maybe you can.

Well to begin with, I think a lot of people rightly didn't expect much from the update. The Nano update was definitely more interesting.
What we got was a small incremental update which they have to do to keep the line fresh. Maybe they just weren't ready with the bigger updates. Who knows. All it means is that some people will sit on their money for a bit longer if this doesn't fit their needs.
I have to say though that the Genius stuff is pretty cool, not as much the one that recommends what else to buy from iTunes, but the pandora aspect of it. I would be using that a lot to create playlists but also to find new music.

Can you run multiple aps at a time. For example, can i be listening to music, have my AIM client open while playing a game? Thanks
No, not unless the push notification system is implemented in firmware 2.1., and even then you will have to see whether the apps you use support that feature.

That's marketing-think for you. According to those folks, if it's thinner at its thinnest point they get to make that claim. I think they did something similar with the Macbook Air, comparing it to other notebooks.

I agree it's all about marketing and how they twist the reality of it.
Regarding the MacBook Air.. it truly is one thin laptop even disregarding the thin tapered edges.. it's still the, if not one of the thinnest laptops in existance with a near-desktop full speed CPU. But that's for another discussion ;)

I'm debating.
Me too. If it had been 64GB I would have definitely ordered one today. I don't care about the 'genius' or the built in speaker at all. And the price cut isn't that great. And it costs more in the UK than in the US. *sigh*
I'm replacing an almost always nearly-full 60GB 5G iPod, so 32GB just doesn't cut it for me, especially when I'll need room for apps on top of music and video.
So I'm going to wait too. Very disappointed.

I would expect 64 GB to come in H1 2009 and to augment the current iPod touch lineup. So it seems like the iPod touch is more front and center in the iPod lineup, further augmented by the iPod classic going down from two models to one.

I would have bought a new one if the touch was offered in 64gb. I already own the 32gb touch, and while the new features are great and most welcome, the feature which will inspire me to upgrade is more storage.

If this was an "iPod event" then what was the iPhone doing there? I know the iPhone can play music, but so can my Mac. If you can justify the iPhone announcements, then a Mac-related one could have been expected reasonably too.
There are still rumors that there will be Mac updates in the next few weeks. Should iPod users complain about "sitting in the back of the bus" when that happens?
No because the Mac updates will be released quietly in the middle of the night with little to no fanfare whatsoever and, if recent history is any guide, they're largely going to suck.
Screw it. Apple should just slap a "Made for iPod" sticker on the Mac and be honest about it. No updates for the Mini in almost a year. The updates to the iMac lately have been lackluster and the displays...? And how about that Mac-free keynote at WWDC? I'm not sure what Apple's thinking, but this nonstop focus on iPods and iPhone is starting to get on my nerves.
As I've said before, if Apple can't update the Macs in a timely manner, they should introduce regular price drops so it at least doesn't feel like their computer customers are getting the short end of the deal. I don't think that's unreasonable at all.

nice to see that the back is still steel: that secures the headphone jack from being mauled by the headphone plug.
as well: new phones look to be high-tec and with a mic for a very good price. will they be good? no idea but for 79$ and dual microarmatures, not a bad price at all. 23 ohm will cause some problems (probably) for bass roll off but much better than some others.
probably people will discover hiss finally from an ipod (a person who has never had nice phones that is) if they upgrade from the usual whites to these. hope that the hiss level has gone down though it was never really that bad.

I don't get the nike thing. They went out of their way to not install something like bluetooth, but instead installed something they will make 100% of buyers spend money on, but maybe a few % will use? Doesn't make sense. I wonder if the nike thing IS bluetooth, but highly disabled? We will see. And the reason the older ipods can't work with the new mic headphones is because the plug is physically different. This isn't just some software update, but a physical change to the ipod that allows it to pick up the extra mic section on the headphone plug and hardware to allow it to record.

That 32GB now seems feasible. I don't know about that shiny silver backing, but I guess it would be in a sick wicked silicone case either way.
May grab that 32 for traveling and as my Apple PDA since the iPhone is still too much of a rip off.
P.S. Get over that d@mn Macbook, get the current one which isn't bad (save for the price of old tech) or grab a refurbished one. Seriously, having an Aluminum one may be a lot worse since it dents easier from users who don't take care of their stuff.

So who's waiting for 64GB?
I'm debating.
I am - they'll likely be here by February, so there's not long to wait. Pure speculation on my part, but it fits with the update cycle. That, and it will probably take me until February anyhow to set aside the $400 a 64GB iPod touch will cost.
Not sure I care about turn by turn GPS, I mean, when I'm out biking I carry a map - it's lighter and less prone to shatter into tiny bits if it gets dropped or I get nailed by an SUV. Plus, listening to music while you're biking is hella dangerous, especially in urban areas.
I'm pleased with the update, though. I'm sure the third generation ones released next year at this time will be even more unbelievably awesome somehow, but as an "everything but the cell phone" device, I'm impressed.

The new iPod touch looks nice. The speaker is cool and so is the $100 price drops on the 16gb and 32gb models.
My wife has a 16gb touch that I use a lot. I'd like my own and it looks like that may happen here before too long, but I want the 32gb.
Surprised they didn't come out with a 64gb model for $499.

Smart Fox! Don't bike with audio in city streets please!
As for the 64GB, stop being surprised. It takes TWO chips to get 32GBs and Apple hasn't found a cost effective way, or enough supply to put two 32GB chips together to make 64.
And Foxy, I do agree about the Touch being an awesome iPhone, without the contract and anal raping part. I think this new one will feel better in the hands as well.

I want to replace my 60 GB iPod with the iPod touch but want the following:
- GPS (real GPS like in a Garmin)
- 64 GB (32 GB is not cutting it for large libraries)
- Bluetooth with file transfer ability (similar to the Razr phones that can easily transfer files with Mac).
- camera
- ability to view MS word documents.
Ok - come on Apple - listen to what your faithful customers want. I will be buying in January when you implement this. Thanks.
Was the one product I was looking forward to upgrades on.
I really wanted gps as an excuse to replace my pda. I've got a bluetooth receiver spare, but I can't see apple letting me use this with it for the foreseeable future.

I am simply blown away by the negativity here for today's Music offerings by Apple. Why are you people not satisfied? They updated EVERY iPod. They cut prices. They updated iTunes with some great new features. You NEGATIVE NANCYS knew it was a music event! Those who expected other annoucements obviously haven't been paying attention.
Apple is #1 music seller. And their music player business is 75% in the world!! And yet they STILL are continuing to upgrade their wares on every level to keep us happy -- and yet here's all the b!tching, pissing and moaning. It boggles the mind. Half of you are babies living in dreamland and the other complainers are Windows Zune Trolls.
Those wanting a 64GB model seem to forget that up until recently, 64GB solid state upped your Mac Book Air price by $999. It went down not that long ago, but it's still pricey. Grow up and try to get your fantasies inline at least with reality.
What cares about nike+ in a iTouch? Strap that brick around your arm and run? Where is the GPS? Mic? Camera?
I am SO SO DISAPPOINTED! Sigh... Saving my money...Ridiculous! The iPod Touch is a mere 4 oz. and being solid state memory, it's quite Exercise-friendly. HARDLY a "BRICK'! It's almost half the weight of the original 5GB iPod. Battery life is unreal at up to 36 audio hours (up from around 8 hours from 2001's 1G 'pod. Just because Apple didn't give you GPS, Mic and Camera doesn't mean that they did something wrong. Those were YOUR fantasies. Sounds like you really want an iPhone. AT&T subsidizes the iPhone.... THAT'S why they're able to offer the iPhone for $199. You're really wanting Apple to simply give away the farm, eh? You're living in dreamland.
Lastly, XIAOBAO68 -- As this is your FIRST POST EVER on Macrumors, I'm not sure if you're trolling or what. Considering your only other post was today and negative in another thread, I'm inclined to think so. If not, then try and be a little more constructive with your posts and reasonings.

Hey now, no reason to get snarky. A friend of mine was tossed over her handlebars last week: her $40 helmet was shattered, she cracked her collerbone, had some cuts and scrapes, but was otherwise OK (bike is still pending a check out by the shop before she takes it on the road again). She did lose a $300 digital camera, however, and unlike her medical expenses, it wasn't covered by insurance.
All I'm saying is that expensive toys and street biking don't generally mix. Getting hit by a vehicle is almost an inevitability if you've been biking long enough, and I'd rather not add insult to injury by losing even more money in the process.

I am simply blown away by the negativity here for today's Music offerings by Apple. Why are you people not satisfied?
Those of us who are being negative are simply getting a little fed up with the Mac getting second billing on everything.
* Apple hasn't held a special event for Macs in god-knows-how-long.
* The iMac updates in the last year have left many customers disappointed and many customers unhappy with their lack of display options.
* Updates and spec bumps across the line have slowed considerably from the old days. Apple used to do spec bumps and/or price drops every 4-6 months. It's like they don't really care enough to bother now.
* Displays haven't seen a significant update in ages.
* Mac Mini is long past being a joke. It should have been updated months ago.
* Recent Mac-related events have seen the Mac marginalized in the keynotes. I can handle that from time-to-time, but at WWDC? That's ridiculous.
* And as for the comment that "It was a music event, what did you expect"... you'll need to explain why the iPhone made the billing, but the Mac didn't. They both interact with iTunes and both play music. And how about explaining why the iPhone and iPod/iTunes merit special events, but the Mac never does anymore.
* Significant updates to the Mac line-up, software and OS have been delayed due reportedly to Apple focusing its time and energies on iPhone and iPod.
It's not that some of us are being overly negative. We're just getting a little sick of Apple treating their computer customers like second class citizens. Bravo, we all love the iPhone and the iPod. How about putting the spotlight on the Mac from time-to-time? And no, showing off the expensive, high-end Macbook Air that appeals to a very small segment of Mac users doesn't cut it.

Maybe, it all depends on the 32GB flash chips being available. Touch uses TWO 16GB chips to get to 32GBs placed where the phone parts would go in the iPhone. So no 32GB iPhone or 64GB touch until those chips become available, and cheap.

I'd like to see this. Maybe Dataviz can make a version of Documents To Go for the iPod touch/iPhone.
That still leaves a £20 disparity.
Maybe that's just down to delivery and other levied taxes for foreign products.
Until today 16GB iPod touches were £269 so Nike+, 2.x as standard and a redesign @ £219 isn't really bothering me one bit...

I would think that with the new earbuds w/mic now available for the new Touch, that :apple: could release a Touch version of iChat for texting and AUDIO via wifi. I don't think it would really be a competitive issue with the iPhone, since the audio communications would be limited to having a wifi signal, and audio chatting through the iChat client. I for one would love it. Especially when traveling overseas and wanting to talk to friends/family back in the States.

Also i got to say I think its abit of gimmick, its not really any different then the old touch. button on the side for volume; how difficult is it guys to double hit the main button and slide your vol quickly? Maybe im not a guy who walks along with it my pocket so dont see this major advantage.
But my final point being: is the touch about moving away from buttons?

Well to begin with, I think a lot of people rightly didn't expect much from the update. The Nano update was definitely more interesting.
What we got was a small incremental update which they have to do to keep the line fresh. Maybe they just weren't ready with the bigger updates. Who knows. All it means is that some people will sit on their money for a bit longer if this doesn't fit their needs.
I will go this way... the update is tempting, at some point I expect to update my 4th Gen U2 ipod, but given how Apple likes to charge for many of the Touch updates, I can easily hold out a while and see what comes along by way of extra features added through software updates.

Yeah, honestly. The Maps are stored in practically every OTHER dedicated GPS device. It would take about 1 to 2 Gb of space tho, assuming like Garmin quality maps, so it might not be entirely plausible.
It's a major pain when your boss walks into your office and you miss his first two sentences.
Which is also why a pause button would be more useful than volume controls.
Definitely. I've always thought the touch should have the option of setting the home button as a "quick pause" kinda thing if you double tap it or hold it down for a second.
I'm actually satisfied with the updates given today. Essentially, we're getting a better product for $100 less. I fail to see how the price cut alone isn't worth the enthusiasm, but extended battery life, even sexier form factor, and the new minor, but welcome additions all make this a considerable better product.
Maybe it's because I didn't expect an iPod sized MacBook/GPS/microwave that I'm not disappointed by what really is a decent upgrade. Sure the lack of increased capacity and camera and GPS is disappointing, but that's only Apple not living up to almost divine-like expectations we have of it. They did a bang up job, and it's kinda sad to see how many of us fail to appreciate that they could have released the same product with like 1 new feature, and still sold probably just as well.

32GB only FTL. Seriously. Nothing fanboi about this. I want a touch. I really do. However I treat my iPod as a jukebox for my music. And when I have friends in the car with varying tastes having my entire collection with me comes in handy. Then there is cross country trips...if I decide I want to listen to a specific artists along the way no need to break out my laptop to get to it. Its all on one device. this was the original intention of the iPod and the literal reason why Jobs didn't want to go into the 512MB PMP area. And yet now we have the touch that is sacrificing this ability for having it a bit thinner. Screw battery life. Add 1Gb of cache (Doesn't even need to be high speed either.) on that thing and you will almost never spin up a drive and only spin it up when loading movies. Then when the system goes to sleep for say more then an hour flush half the cache and shut 512MB down to conserve power.
but nooooo. we have Mr Jobs who seems to have a thin fetish. gah! :(

As it always is. Those with the 80GB classic aren't missing much, maybe the Nano buyers are since they got a pretty big up update, but nothing to really run to the stores for.
Same thing with the iPhone 3G and anytime there's a new Mac laptop or desktop.

So disappointed the iPods Touch 1st gen can't have Nike+ :( that was one of the major app i was waiting for.. :(

The iPhone made an appearance because it one point Steve himself said it was the best iPod ever. Why don't people seem to grasp the phone is an Ipod?

The new touch is actually thicker than previous model. Look it up. The battery in new model is rated at 36hr music and 6hr video. Previous version was 22hr music and 5hr video.
The battery life is substantially better.

They bumped the battery >60% for music (from 22h to 36h). (And it's not really thinner, so I don't know if it could be a longer-life battery.)

Why is everyone complaining that there's no camera, or no GPS, or no whatever? Apple will not add a camera or GPS to the iPod Touch; they don't want it to get too close to the iPhone in features. The iPod Touch isn't meant to do all the things the iPhone does like camera and GPS, it's supposed to be an iPod and a apps and games device. Why would you need GPS anyway? You would have to be connected to WiFi to get directions, and if you're using GPS to go somewhere, you aren't likely to find WiFi hotspots everywhere.

£169 for the 8GB sounds pretty decent...
Or maybe that's when I compare it to the 32GB at £279. Over £50 more than America is paying, unless I am mistaken.

ARRRRRRRRGGGHHHH!! One does not need to be connected to anything for GPS (other than the satellite signal). How the Hell do you people think stand-alone GPS units (like the after-market Tomtom and Garmin) work
OK, feelin' better now.

He's talking about GPS software that works over Wifi, not hardware.
Also, I can't understand some of the expectations people had.

The only thing that I would change is the ****ing scratchy back. Damn them.

There is no way to store maps on any of these devices yet, so what are you going to do with a set of GPS co-ords?
The only thing I'm pissed about is the built-in speaker, yet another device that kids/teens can use to annoy me when they think everyone around them wants to hear their poor taste in music.

well that's what the iphone deserves for :apple: not giving the touch camera or gps :D
It still makes no sense of why they did that. It is the same headphone jack with 3 channels: two for audio and one for mic/control (as seen in the apple store).

That he may be, but it's not mentioned anywhere in his post. It seems to me that he's assuming (as many people here do) that GPS requires a cell signal.

Amen to that! I was hoping for GPS, but not expecting it. I *really* wanted a speaker so I could share videos without people with playing "pass the 'phones". Add the upgraded battery and I'm ready to buy as soon as stock hits the store :D

Why not? I can currently store anything on my iPod Touch (which I'm returning to the store now that the new ones are out). Of course, it's jailbroken--but it makes the point that not being able to store maps is simply an Apple-induced limitation which is easily remedied with a firmware update. All Apple would have to do is:
1) put the GPS receiver in the iPod Touch
2) add a "Maps" directory to the "Media" directory (just like I added a "ROMs" directory to make my NES emulator work)
3) sell maps on iTS
4) write the code--a simple modification--to take advantage of it all

It's supposed to be an ipod (?), apps (mostly gimmicks, mostly 3rd party, mostly costly) and a games device (whatever the keynote said, urrrrr)?
It's a good thing for us that it's purposely limited so it doesn't effect the sales of their other products?
It's a shame most people don't know that there's 4 year old pdas, wrapped in nice black magnesium cases with discrete graphics that can do play mp3s with artwork, run all sorts of 3rd party apps and 3d games and also do divx/xvid/dvds/h264, 'full' web browsing, gps, voip, bluetooth, ad2p, sd/cf expansion, removable batteries, office apps, 4.7" sony(eww) screens with twice the res of the itouch etcetcetcetc. Maybe they'd question the prices/features/limitations of some of these 'revolutionary' products a little more and we'd all end up happier. There is competition, even if it's a relatively(massively) small, dying and unadvertised market.
It's a shame there isn't even more complaining and whining about countless issues, much more fun and more productive(?!) than blindly assuming everything they're doing with this line is good. The responses can be a great giggle too.
It's a shame there's no potential in the current touch for apples take on road navigation software. With all the storage and their distribution, it would be pretty easy for them to add all sorts of road maps, air/sea charts, OS(uk), compasses, speedo/g/velocity meters etcetc - I'd love to see what they could do, apps like tomtom/igo etc are brilliant and shoddy at the same time.
It's a shame that half the itouch posts seem to be crying out for a gps receiver (I'd even buy into it, trusting the software would come later) while the other half can't tell the difference between gps and a dot on google maps (a mobile app that was about way before the iphone existed). Funnily enough I know that wifi doesn't work in the middle of nowhere - the only interest I have in random hotspots while driving is the potential for 100000s of itouch/phone/whatever users to be telling the internet average speeds/traffic jams etc.
It's a shame the one feature I wanted for an excuse to buy an ipod wasn't included. I didn't get what I wanted, which means that the product (line) sucks, obviously.

Huh. Didn't know that. I thought that the standalone GPS devices used cell signals. No need to get all angry.

I am kinda dissapointed. I had hoped for more in terms of memory at least. iPod touch with 64g for $399 would have gotten me of the bench.
I am going to save my $400 and see what happens with an ultra portable this fall.

The need is in the, uh, mind of the, uh, angered party ;)
For the past many weeks we ("we" being people who either want GPS in the iPod Touch and/or who understand how it works) have been seeing this exact same comment every other post. I understand that people don't always read an entire thread, but the repetition is monotonous

And would have been a huge loss for Apple.
